n Thursday, Feb. 11, Elmhurst Hospital came to Willowbrook High School for a Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L) Cardiac Screening Program.

“Our No. 1 priority at District 88 is the safety and wellbeing of our students, and this event allowed us to provide students with free electrocardiograms (EKGs) to identify those at risk for heart conditions,” said Principal Dan Krause. “It was amazing to see the field house filled with hundreds of students, and we’re incredibly thankful to Young Hearts for Life for offering us this opportunity to help ensure our students’ health.”

The purpose of the event is to get early screenings of young people’s hearts that will serve as a baseline for the rest of their lives. It is also a chance to catch any irregularities or potential problems that could lead to something more serious. We’ve all heard the tales of teens in their junior or senior year of high school who suddenly drop dead from a heart attack, sometimes after a sports event, and no one really knows why until it’s too late.

At the YH4L event held at York High School in Elmhurst about a year ago, the Independent spoke to John Regalado, who lost his son Robert in

KC Council #8365 names winners of free-throw contest Among eight players, three advance to regionals

VILLA PARK — Five boys and three girls from Villa Park and Lombard were named council champions for the 2016 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and earned the right to compete at the district level. Fr. John Barrett Council # 8365 of Villa Park sponsored the local competition in the gym of St. Alexander’s School. All youngsters ages 9 to 14 were eligible to participate.

Winners by division were: 9-year-old girls - Elizabeth Trentina 9-year-old boys - Jack Barrett 10-year-old girls - Abbey Martin 10-year-old boys - Isaac

Sobiesczyk 11-year-old boys - Noah Lftner 12-year-old girls - Meghan Martin 12-year-old boys - John Swastek 13-year-old boys - Caden Mielke Each contest was allowed 15 free throws in the contest after taking three warm-up shots.

The winners were presented with an engraved plaque with a gold-finished basketball net with their name on it.

Winners earned the right to participate in the district competition that was held on February 7, 2016 at St. Isadores Parish Center, Bloomingdale. Jack Barrett, Abbey Martin, and Meghan Martin won their divisions at the District level competition and will be advancing to the regional contest to be held at Benedictine University Monday, March 21.

“Robert had played sports for nine years and never showed any signs of a heart problem. Unfortunately, his first symptom was his death.”

Regalado and his wife Laura have managed to channel their grief in part by volunteering at YH4L events. They also started “Bobbo’s Fund for Young Hearts,” where Laura serves as

president, to raise funds and awareness for the cause.

“We just don’t want anyone to ever have to go through what we did with Robert,” Regalado said.

“It just takes a couple of minutes to help and it could save a life,” said Mary Woods, who lost her son in 2007. Woods’ son had a condition called HCM and passed away at 29

years old.

“The doctor said that those who are diagnosed with the condition usually die before they are 30 years old,” she said.

“My son died at 29.”

Like the Regalados, Woods only wants to help any other families who might have to go through what she did.

“If we could have had someone help our child, if only we

had testing like this back then,” she said.

More than 850 students were screened that Thursday, helped by the staff and volunteers at Young Hearts for Life as well as more than 70 community volunteers, who attended a training session and assisted for part of the day.

sey Mike’s Subs, who donated lunch for the workers, paid and volunteer. Also, thanks to The Odeum Expo Center, who provided the privacy stations. And the biggest thanks to Edward-Elmhurst Health, who sponsored and conducted the program.

• Illinois blind seek ADA in cyberspace The Americans with Disabilities Act has been the law of the land since President George H.W. Bush signed it on July 26, 1990. More than 25 years later, local activists with the National Federation of the Blind are traveling to Washington, D.C., this week with a quest to make the ADA the law of cyberspace.

While brick-and-mortar stores are now adapted for accessibility for the disabled, things online are not as wellestablished, according to the National Federation for the Blind. Voice software that reads the words on a page does help a blind person, until he or she comes across one of those Captcha boxes that requires a “real human” to type in a code to prove it so, or a PDF without an audio file.

“For many blind people, getting a college degree is very important,” said Glenn Moore, secretary of the Illinois Chapter of the National Federation

for the Blind. “We’re working to make sure blind people can have full participation, inclusion and equality in society.”

• Red light cameras not making intersections safer According to a report issued last week, red light cameras are not decreasing accidents at the 55 intersections across 29 suburbs where they are located. In fact, crashes involving injuries reportedly went up or stayed the same at almost 50% of those intersections. Accidents classified as hazardous by transportation pros stayed the same or increased at 25% of the reporting intersections.

Consumer advocates are now saying municipalities should think it over before installing cameras.

Local leaders should “be judicious and know why crashes are happening,” said Beth Mosher, Chicago AAA Director of Public Affairs.

“No one has faith in these cameras,” Illinois Campaign for Political Reform Chair-

woman Susan Garrett said, citing an ongoing corruption case in Chicago.

Red-light cameras came on the scene in the late 2000s and became a cash cow for many municipalities, but they were issuing $100 tickets to drivers who made a “rolling” right turn, or some other low-risk infraction. The cameras rarely catch someone running a red light or other incidents that could actually save lives or catch “bad guys.”

Still for some municipalities, the cameras have been a “cash cow.” For instance, Rosemont reportedly made $1.2 million in 2014, another community made $2.2 million started popping up at suburban locations in the late 2000s. Overall, the cameras contributed more than $12 million to suburban coffers in 2014, according to the report.

The report was formed from one- and three-year reports, which were provided to IDOT by cities and towns with red light cameras.

Olivia Petrides’s drawings based on the Aurora Borealis opens March 7 ELMHURST — Olivia Petrides’s drawings are immersive, large-scale abstractions based on her direct observation of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. With a background in scientific illustration, Petrides uses simple tools such as ink, gouache and paper; and the basic element of drawing, the line, to reenact the forcefulness and sub-

J.C. Licht Store has new owners ELMHURST — The J.C. Licht retail paint store located at 223 N. York Rd. is one of 31 locations in the Chicago area to be purchased by new owners. A long-time professional in retail paint, the new owner is investing in upgrades to operations and to offerings at the store.

“Our mission is to offer the finest paint and paint-related products, along with advice at the highest levels, to create an unmatched resource within the paint and decorating industry,” said Elliot Greenberg, who now heads the company as owner, president and chief executive officer. The new company headquarters is based in Addison.

Management of the Elmhurst store will remain the same.

Elliott said he expects to add about 45 full-time jobs to the

company’s Chicago operations over the next year.

The Elmhurst J.C. Licht store was previously owned by Benjamin Moore, which is a Berkshire Hathaway Company.

The retain chain was founded

in 1907 by Jacob Christian Licht, who opened his first store at 3150 W. 12th Street, changed to Roosevelt Rd. in 1919. Benjamin Moore paint will continue to be the major brand sold at J.C. Licht.

• Criminal damage to property was reported in the 400 block of W. Division at around 9:44 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect damaged a mirror on a vehicle that was parked unoccupied.

Feb. 12 • Christine M. Finnigan, 48, of Villa Park, was arrested near St. Charles and Villa at around 6:18 a.m. and charged with two counts of DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance.

Man sentenced in fatal DUI Lost control of car on Spring Road near 31st St.

WHEATON — DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Friday, Feb. 19 that a Downers Grove man charged in a fatal crash had been sentenced to one year of periodic imprisonment in the DuPage County Jail. The accident claimed the life of 48-year-old Thomas Fitzsimons of Hinsdale, who was a passenger in the vehicle.

William Decero, 51, of 5425 Washington Street in Downers Grove, appeared in court Friday in front of Judge Daniel Guerin who handed down the sentence.

On Sept. 22, 2013, at approximately 12:04 a.m., Decero and Fitzsimons were traveling on Spring Road just south of 31st Street in Oak Brook. Decero, who was driving Fitzsimons’

Feb. 7 Jeffrey R. Hughes, 30, of Lombard, was arrested near Maple and Westmore at around 1:34 a.m. and charged with DUI, improper turn, failure to signal when required, improper lane usage and no insurance.

Feb. 4 A male juvenile from Villa Park was arrested at a local high school at around 2:40 p.m. and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following a 911 call from a neighbor, authorities from the Oak Brook Police Department arrived at the scene and found both men still in the vehicle.

Both men had been wearing their seatbelts. Fitzsimons was pronounced dead at the scene and Decero was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. An investigation into the crash revealed that Decero had a blood alcohol content of 0.139. On August 14, 2015, Decero entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated DUI, a Class 2 Felony.

Decero, who will begin serving his sentence immediately, will be allowed to leave the DuPage County Jail during his sentence for work and counseling sessions. He will also be required to serve four years of probation following his release.

Where’s the peanut butter?

t was a normal unassuming typical Tuesday, the day the peanut butter went missing. I couldn’t believe it myself. Although looking back, it shouldn’t have been too big a surprise.

But I’m jumping ahead of the story.

I enjoy a piece of peanut butter toast on occasion. Last Tuesday was going to be one of those occasions. I took out the bread and the toaster and opened the cupboard to fetch the peanut butter. It was gone.

I was puzzled at first, thinking perhaps someone put the peanut butter in an alternate location. I looked behind other items on the shelf but the tea bags and hot cocoa were not hiding the peanut butter. I checked the likely places in the kitchen: the fridge, pantry and cupboards and came up

empty. I went to my boys’ bedrooms and looked on the dressers, bookshelves and under the beds. There wasn’t a ground peanut to be had.

I even rummaged through the garbage. Maybe someone tossed the peanut butter in there. Stranger things have happened. I’ve found cutlery, plates and cups in the garbage on prior occasions (but that’s another article). After all my searching, I remained – in a word – peanutbutterless. (And hungry.)

I was perplexed. We don’t purchase the little snack-size peanut butter. Our jar is economy-grade and hefty. There weren’t many places one could stuff a large jar of peanut butter. Nor did I think someone had eaten the entire jar. That would take some doing.

The people living with me are capable of enormous consumption. They are mostly teenage boys and teenage boys are notorious for their eating aptitudes. I don’t want to brag, but my boys can down an entire box of Triscuits while waiting for the oven to preheat so they can cook and eat a whole pizza (or two). And that’s just an after-school snack.

But a nearly full economysize jar of peanut butter would be a little much – even for boys with gargantuan snacking talents. Still, I knew I hadn’t

touched the peanut butter. It had to be one of them.

It was a mystery, and my middle name is practically Scooby Do, so I did what any ordinary, 2016 CSI-inclined mom would do. I sent a group text: “Who took the peanut butter?” I typed in the frustrated-face emoji to further communicate my angst.

My husband, who is well versed in our weird and wacky life because he has also retrieved forks and spoons from the garbage, replied with the smiley face emoji. That guy gets me. I had to smile.

Over the years we’ve learned sometimes you have to laugh at the oddity of any given situation. It’s either that or go crazy. And if we went loco, who’d be around to search for the peanut butter?

Within three minutes of

sending the first text, I’d heard from all the innocents, who were adamant about their peanut butter deficiencies. Then I got the message I’d been waiting for. The confession.

Indeed, one child did take the entire jar of peanut butter – for a school project.

What can a mom say to that?

School projects trump breakfast any time of the day. I beamed with pride; my son went to the effort of remembering he had a school project.

Then I reached for the strawberry jam. My stomach was rumbling and the toast was just about ready.

some parts of the country, it’s too hot to be outdoors some times of the year. And in some parts of the country, it snows.

It’s not complicated.

Today I have taken it upon myself to be the spokesman for snow. Snow is magical. Many people have cherished memories of snow days. Outside you partake in building of snow creatures, eating snow, letting a snow flake land on your tongue, building a snow fort, knowing the satisfaction of hitting someone with a snowball, and feeling the sting when one hits you. And who among us has not made a snow angel?

You can ski downhill, crosscountry, snow shoe, snow board, go sledding, or simply go for a walk. There’s a kind of hush all over the world. I’ll say it again, magical.

Inside you can watch from your window as the vista becomes a winter wonderland.

Build a fire. Make soup. Watch a movie. Or two. Read a book.

Or two. Binge watch a series.

Make love. Call a friend. The coziness of being inside watch-

ing it snow is a joy.

If you don’t feel like going out (or if the roads are too bad), this is an opportunity to do some activities you put off. Now you finally have time to write that novel, paint that masterpiece, get crafty. Knitting and crossword puzzling and playing board games are the perfect thing to do. Snow can be a reminder to slow down, and that is usually a good thing.

Snow is often in movies and books as part of the scene and the plot. Snow can be a major character.

Watch the snow and cuddle under a comfy blankie and even if (especially if) you don’t enjoy snow, make a list of all the things you are grateful for this fine day. (1. I am not being attacked by a bear. 2. I have a roof and heat. 3. I love soft sweaters….)

And one more thing we all know, snow lover or snow hater, this too shall pass. Don’t fret. Snow does not last forever. Nothing does. Be glad for today and know that spring is on its way.

t’s snowing again. White circles streaming down that look almost fake. The puffs (they are not flakes) are coming straight down and fast.

It seems as if someone above the stage is dumping out bags and bags of artificial winter faster than they should and the director needs to tell them to slow the pace. “We’ve only budgeted for so much snow!

Slower! We don’t want to run out AND it’s more romantic when the stuff floats down slowly!”

But this snow is real and there’s an unlimited supply with no chance of running out.

It’s pretty.

I know the haters are gonna hate hate hate, but really, shake it off. If you live in a part of the country where it snows, why shake your fist at the sky? It does this every winter, no surprise, so no point in bemoaning it.

No one posts on Facebook: “It’s night again! It’s dark! I hate it! Boo! I can’t believe it’s dark -again. Yuck! Dark, dark, go away!” We know the sun sets every night. We know in these parts it’s going to snow.

You might not like it, but complaining doesn’t change it.

If you live in Arizona, you have blazing heat in the summer. “Oh not, not the sun again! That hot ball of heat!”

For me, Arizona summers are too hot and I don’t choose to live there. It’s all relative. In

VILLA PARK — Willowbrook senior Sally Nijim has been named as a finalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. Nijim is a member of Willowbrook’s Math Team, Science Olympiad, Scholastic Bowl, Model United Nations, the Principal’s Leadership Team and a variety of academic honor societies. She also is a chairperson for Relay For Life.

IC Catholic Prep’s Bianchini finishes second at state wrestling

IC Catholic Prep sophomore wrestling standout Joe Bianchini recently took second in the 106-pound weight division at the Class 1A state finals held in Champaign.

Bianchini, the No. 1 seed at 106, opened the tournament with a pinfall win in 1:51 over Pittsfield’s Noah Booth (2120), who was the No. 16 seed.

Bianchini then scored a 3-0 win over Rockford Lutheran’s Josh Schrank (36-4), who was the No. 9 seed.

In the semifinals, Bianchini recorded a 6-0 win over East Alton-Wood River’s Drew Sobol (39-5), who was seeded fourth in the tournament.

In the finals, Bianchini dropped a 7-6 decision to No. 2 seed Tyler Fleetwood (40-1) of Fulton.

Bianchini finished his sophomore season with a 42-2 record.

Bianchini is IC Catholic Prep’s first state wrestling medalist.

Addison Trail’s O’Neill competes at state gymnastics meet Blazers’ girls basketball team wins opening playoff game

Addison Trail girls gymnast Kennedy O’Neill recently competed in the all-around competition at the state meet held at Palatine High School.

O’Neill, a junior, scored an 8.725 on vault, an 8.475 on bars, an 8.325 on balance beam

and a 9.15 on floor exercise.

O’Neill finished 32nd in the all-around standings at state.

Willowbrook girls basketball The Willowbrook girls basketball team concluded its season after a 50-23 loss to Glenbard West in Class 4A Glenbard West regional action.

Glenbard West led 14-6 after the first quarter and 27-10 at halftime. Glenbard West outscored Willowbrook 14-8 in the third quarter and 9-5 in the fourth quarter.

Addison Trail girls indoor track team performs well at York invite

The Addison Trail girls track team had a promising showing at the recent York indoor invite.

The Blazers 800 relay team ran 1:54.3 to win the race. It was the squad’s best 800 time to start off the season. That time was good enough to earn a Top 12 ranking in the state as of earlier last week, Addison Trail coach Dave Pytko pointed out.

“We can only improve with good handoffs and competition,” said Pytko. “With competition at our level and good handoffs we probably are capable of 1:51 or lower.

We will not run another 4-by-200 until we get outside, even then we won’t run our best team in that event until the second week of outdoor, so I hope for a lot of growth in two months. Our goal is to get down to a 1:44 or lower by sectionals.”

The 800 team includes junior Lauren Kroll, junior Klea Gjonaj, junior Suhei Valbuena and senior Lynette Banuelos.

Pytko pointed out only Valbuena is new to the relay team.

Banuelos, Kroll and Gjonaj have experience running at state in the 400 relay.

In other action at York, Kroll won the 55 hurdles and 200 dash, “handily,” Pytko said.

Valbuena placed second in the 300, while Gjonaj was second in the 55 dash and fourth in the 200. Alyssa Vierra was second in the shot put.

Addison Trail boys track The Addison Trail boys track team has competed in a pair of indoor meets thus far, but no scores were kept.

“We have a large freshman group and several older athletes who are running track for the first time. Our total numbers are in the low 60s,” said Addison Trail coach Bruce Kelsay.

Mikey Strycharz was 14th in the 200 with a time of 1:57.45.

Zimmerman was 10th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.86.

Ethan Wallace placed 10th in the 50 with a time of 22.27.

AT-Willowbrook took ninth in the 200 relay with a time of

Zimmerman was 11th in the backstroke with a time of 59.72. AT-Willowbrook took seventh in the 400 relay with a time of 3:28.70 with Grygo, Burns, Strycharz and Wallace.

Willowbrook’s Rowland wins Class 3A state wrestling championship Finishes career with three state medals; Jessen takes third at 182 pounds

Matt Rowland accomplished exactly what he set out to do.

The Willowbrook senior wrestling standout recently won the Class 3A 170-pound state championship in Champaign.

In doing so, Rowland became the fourth Willowbrook wrestler in school history to win a state championship, joining Mike Behnke (titles in 2001 and 2002), Steve Congenie (titles in 2010 and 2011) and Matt Roth (title in 2001).

Rowland, the No. 1 seed at 170 pounds, finished the year with a 52-1 record and leaves Willowbrook as the all-time winningest wrestler with 184 career wins.

That 184 mark ties him for ninthhighest in state history.

Rowland started the state finals tournament with a pinfall win in 1:21 over Fox Lake Grant’s Jacob Melton (18-12), who was the 16th seed.

Rowland then scored an 8-4 win over No. 8 seed Logan Gruszka (41-4) of Schaumburg.

In the state semifinals, Rowland was a technical fall winner in 3:38 (score of 20-5) over No. 4 seed DJ Penick (26-11) of Highland Park.

In the championship match, Rowland recorded a pinfall win in only 23 seconds over Deerfield’s Sage Heller (44-5), the No. 7 seed in the tournament.

The 23-second pin is the quickest ever recorded in a 170pound match at the state tournament and is the third-quickest fall ever in an IHSA wrestling state-championship match.

Rowland also finished fifth in the state in 2014 at 152 pounds and second in the state in 2015 at 152 pounds.

Rowland’s teammate sophomore Jack Jessen took third in the state at 182 pounds.

Jessen opened the tournament with a pinfall win in 1:02 over Harlem’s Dalton Hambrock (31-

13), the No. 11 seed in the tournament. Jessen was the No. 6 seed.

Jessen then scored a 5-1 win over Yorkville’s Bryce Shewan (45-8), who was the No. 3 seed.

In the semifinals, Jessen lost 3-1 to Sanburg’s Patrick Brucki, the No. 10 seed. Brucki (47-3) ended up taking second in the state.

In the back draw, Jessen scored a 10-1 major decision over Lincoln-Way East’s Brian Burns (40-9), who was the No. 8 seed.

In the third-place match, Jessen was a 9-2 winner over Schaumburg’s Tony Vezzetti (34-8, No. 5 seed).

Jessen finished the season with a 51-3 record. He took second in the state last year at 170 pounds.

Jessen already has surpassed the 100-career win mark at Willowbrook. In just two seasons, Jessen is 103-7.

Fenton boys basketball team preparing for stretch run

The Fenton boys basketball team was right in the thick of things in a pair of recent contests against Metro Suburban Conference opponents.

In a 63-52 MSC crossover loss to Elmwood Park, Fenton trailed by only five points at halftime.

“We were not able to get stops on the defensive end that we needed,” said Fenton coach Josh Payton. “They pulled

away and kept gaining separation. We struggled a little bit defensively. They had a guard that stretched the floor and hurt us from the exterior and hit some 3s. It was more than we could overcome.”

Tyler Santagata led the Bison with 13 points. Eric Trujillo, who Payton noted was averaging about 12 points a game during a recent 3-4-game stretch, added 11 points.

Fenton also dropped a 55-40 decision to Wheaton Academy in MSC West Division play.

Fenton led by seven points at one juncture of the first half.

“Wheaton Academy made some adjustments at halftime

and packed it in on us in the second half,” said Payton.

“The space we used to run our offense in the interior disintegrated. We didn’t stop as much as we could defensively and that hurt us down the stretch.”

KJ Jones led Fenton with 16 points, while Javier Sanchez finished with 15 points.

Fenton finished up MSC West Division play earlier this week against Aurora Central Catholic and will open postseason play in a Class 4A regional at Chicago Whitney Young on Monday against Chicago Schurz. Schurz (16-11) is the No. 12 sectional seed while Fenton is the No. 20 seed. The win-

ner advances to play Whitney Young on Tuesday.

“This is the best team we’ve had at Fenton in my tenure,” said Payton. “We have the opportunity here to establish ourselves in the Class 4A playoffs.”

Payton noted Fenton has never won a playoff game since moving up to Class 4A. Payton said leading scorer Bryan Larsen, who has been sidelined due to injury, is scheduled to return for the playoffs.

Fenton girls basketball team wraps up season Coach Anderson lauds squad for positive attitude and hard work

The Fenton girls basketball team recently concluded its season after a 57-26 loss to St. Charles East in Class 4A quarterfinal action of the Bartlett regional.

Fenton graduates Susmarski and Jessica Bango (who was injured) from this year’s team.

“Courtney really stepped up and was our go-to person,” said Anderson.

Anderson also lauded the play of freshman Ashley Lira and junior Danielle Shawaluk.

“The last third of the season Ashley Lira took a giant step forward,” said Anderson.

“Danielle is another kid who

improved. She was our defensive stopper. We’re looking forward to more good things from her next year. She’s a tough competitor and that’s part of what we need to get back into this thing.”

Anderson also praised the overall makeup of the team. “It was a very challenging season and I was really impressed with how the girls stuck together,” he said. “It’s an absolutely wonderful group of kids and it was wonderful working with them.”

Fenton senior wrestler Sebastian Kaspar saved his best of last.

Kaspar, a senior 120-pounder, qualified for state for the first time in his varsity career.

“To me it means I accomplished something,” he said late last week. “I haven’t done anything like this with sports.

When I was younger, I wasn’t a good wrestler. When I was younger I would wrestle on and off and never had good matches. Doing this feels like I’ve accomplished something. I accomplished one of my goals.”

At the state meet Kaspar wrestled one match and lost in 4:39. His record stood at 27-15 after the state match.

“I’ve done a better job with staying motivated this season,” he said. “I worked hard this year and did the best I could to improve.”

Kaspar said one major improvement this season for him has been wrestling from the bottom position.

“For me I could never usually stand up or get up from my opponent,” he said. “I learned more moves and accomplished what I needed to do to score more points.”

Kaspar stopped wrestling for a stretch midway through his sophomore year. “I was sick of it, but then I realized that I do like the sport,” he said. “Junior year I didn’t accomplish anything so senior year I started doing off-season training and

improve.”

I’ve improved a great amount compared to the last two years.”

Kaspar said he appreciates the individual aspect of the sport. “I like it because it’s a sport where you concentrate on yourself,” he said. “Yes, it’s about the team, but you have to concentrate on yourself. If you do something wrong out there it’s on you and not on anyone else.”

Kaspar is considering pursuing a business field of study at College of DuPage. When he’s not in the classroom or on the mat, Kaspar enjoys playing paint ball. “I like paint ball a lot,” he said. “I like the impact and how it’s fast-paced and you always keep moving.”

Kaspar’s high-school career isn’t quite finished though. Earlier in the week Fenton competed in the dual-team sectionals for a chance to compete in the dual-team state finals.

“I like being part of the Fenton wrestling program,” he said. “The coaches are great and the wrestlers help you through things. Everybody has been so supportive of me making state.”

Kaspar’s teammate, Manny Morales, lost two matches in the 113-pound state finals tournament. Morales had an 18-9 record heading into the dualteam sectional.

Three area girls basketball players have a shot this week to advance to the state 3-point shooting finals.

Willowbrook’s Alyssa Spada and Bridget Garner and Fenton’s Krysta Wilson all

advanced out of the regional portion of the Class 4A state 3-point shooting competition.

Spada and Garner advanced out of the Class 4A Glenbard West regional, while Wilson made nine 3-pointers and advanced out of the Class 4A Bartlett regional.

Spada, Garner and Wilson will be part of this week’s Class 4A Schaumburg sectional field.

Qualifiers out of the Schaumburg sectional head to next weekend’s Class 4A state finals in Normal at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University.
