Train station coffee shop to change hands

The story is true, but the name has been changed to protect the caffeinated.

Commuters using the Metra Station on Ardmore Ave. in Villa Park will still be able to get their morning coffee before boarding the train, but the Morning Blend Coffee shop in the station will now be known as “The Crack of Dawn.”

The Village Board approved a lease agreement with T&D Coffee, Ltd. to allow the new owners to continue offering coffee and snacks on weekday mornings at the venue. Former store manager Toula Freberg is moving out of state and has turned the business over to Dawn Larson, who has managed the shop for the last three years.

“For some time The Morning Blend has been in the Metra Station and has done a nice job, treating the customers nicely, paying the rent, etc.” said Village Manager Richard Keehner.

The new lease is for five years at $130 per month.

“This is not an easy establishment to keep rented,” said Keehner.

“There have been some changes to train traffic in recent years. Trains going to Chicago now board on the south side of the tracks, not on the north side next to the station.”

This change has ‘really affected’ the coffee shop’s business, according to Keehner.

“We as a community receive over 200 trains a day, commuter and freight,” he said. “I have been notified Metra is expanding stops at Elmhurst and Lombard (soon), and possibly Villa Park in the future.”

Trustee Nick Cuzzone asked if a pedestrian overpass could be built to ease movement across the tracks for commuters as well as enhance safety.

“Staff has discussed that,” said Keehner. “Glen Ellyn is pursuing [a pedestrian overpass] and the cost of that is between $3- and $5-million.”

Village President Debora Bullwinkel said she had met with U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi and put this on his radar in an effort to secure Federal funding for an overpass.

“This is a long-term thing, however,” she said.

In the meantime, commuters can still count on getting their morning coffee at the Metra Station.

“It’s nice to see an existing business continuing on,” Bullwinkel said.

Legislator proposes state-wide elimination of red light cameras

A Republican state representative from the Barrington Hills area is proposing a ban on red-light cameras state-wide.

Red-light cameras always pose the question, do they save lives or just generate revenue for whatever local government is lucky enough to catch someone there violating the law?

State Rep. David McSweeney (Barrington Hills-52nd Dist.) insists the devices merely serve to make money and offer almost no guarantee of safety to motorists.

“Red-light cameras do not enhance public safety,” he said. “Raising revenue is not a valid reason to continue the red-light camera program in Illinois.” he said.

McSweeney now has two pieces of legislation to eliminate the cameras across the state for which he is seeking support. One bill (HB 472) would eliminate the camera, the other (HB 473) would do so for nonhome rule communities.

Many constituents have voice opposition to the red-light cameras, McSweeney said. Over the past ten years, their use has grown exponentially, despite their controversial nature.

Some communities have discontinued use of red-light cameras because of complaints received and because there is no proof they promote traffic safety.

“Studies have shown how the presence of red-light cameras can actually create more rear-end collisions,” McSweeney said. “The perception of many Illinois residents is that these cameras are nothing more than an additional way to tax Illinois residents and raise revenue for Illinois municipalities. It is time to eliminate redlight cameras.”

On the other side of the coin, smaller towns will lose revenue from the program, which could affect their finances, if they have grown to depend on that revenue. According to McSweeney, a red-light camera in Fox River Grove located where

Rtes. 14 and 22 intersect reportedly generates more than $440,000 per year. The was installed after residents complained about near misses between vehicles and pedestrians. A Village official said red-light camera revenues do not fund the operating budget of almost $4 million, but it has been funding street improvements.

“We would essentially have to come up with about $500,000 a year to resurface streets, which currently does not exist in the village’s budget,” said Village Administrator Derek Soderholm. “We would have to potentially ask the voters for an increase.”

He did indicate that accidents had reduced since the cameras’ installation, which took place in 2009.

Fox River Grove Village President Robert Nunamaker said a decision would be made when their contract expires, which is not for another two years.

“Would we feel it? Absolutely,” he said. “But it was not put in to solve financial problems.”

Nunamaker said village residents constitute roughly 2 percent of those ticketed for red-light camera violations.

“The issue is it was put in there to try and facilitate pedestrian traffic across a very busy intersection,” he said. “If the red-light camera wasn’t there, we would have many more people not stopping before making a right turn on red.

“It has definitely affected the way people drive. If we had to get rid of it, I would press very hard to get a ‘no turn on red’ sign there.”

Community Capsules What’s happening at Villa Park Village Hall

The Villa Park Board of Trustees meeting held on Monday, Feb. 13 began with a presentation by the Community Pride Commission (CPC).

Carol Davis of the CPC handed out Holiday Decorating Awards. Clara and Gregory Billing of N. Princeton Ave. and their grandson Logan Thompson accepted the plaque of recognition for this year’s award. The next meeting of the CPC will take place on Feb. 28, 2016 in Village Hall. All are welcome.

• Village President Deborah Bullwinkel announced that, starting on Thursday, March 2, residents who have garbage pick-up on Friday will be switched to a Thursday schedule for garbage and recycling pick up.

This is due to Roy Strom, Inc. getting another residential customer. Residents with any questions can call Roy Strom directly at 708-344-5000.

• Bullwinkel also reminded residents that holiday lights need to be removed by March 27. Bullwinkel also said residents can drop off electronics for recycling at the Village garage located at 20 W. Home Ave. The drop off is open from 9 a.m. to noon on the third Saturday of every month.

An ID showing Villa Park residency is required and only one tube-TV is allowed. March 18 is the next date for drop off.

• During the Formal Agenda portion, the Board approved nine items listed under the consent agenda including: a) The Village Bill Listing dated Feb. 13, 2017 in the amount of $991,769. b) Minutes from the Village Committee of the Whole meeting for Jan. 23, 2017. c) Minutes from the Village Formal board meeting for Jan. 23, 2017. d) Minutes from the Public Hearing for Jan. 23, 2017. e) A Resolution approving the purchase of a 2017 Ford F-450 crew-cab two-wheel drive truck with utility body for the Public Works Dept. The vehicle being replaced is nie years old and in poor condition. The cost of the new truck is $46,100 and will be purchased from Landmark Ford, Inc. under the State of Illinois Purchase Program. f) A Resolution authorizing a lease agreement with T&D Coffee, LTD. The lease is for five years at $130 per month. (See story on pg. 1 of this issue). g) A Resolution disclaiming interest in property along Roosevelt Rd. This was needed so the Illinois Dept. of Transportation can move forward with legal action to secure property for the Roosevelt Rd. construction project near South Villa Ave. h) A Resolution accepting a proposal from Russ’s Plumbing and Sewer of Addison for installation of a storm sewer on North Iowa Ave. in the amount of $28,329. The installation is needed due to flooding and icy conditions over the past several years between Plymouth Street and Sunset Drive.

i) An Ordinance authorizing and providing for issuance of general obligation (G.O.) refunding bonds, series 2017. The aggregate principal amount of $3,010,000 is for refunding other outstanding debt. This is part of the TIF 3 debt certificate refunding, a need that has arisen because the TIF district has not generated enough revenue to pay the existing bond interest.

The Board voted unanimously on a First and Final reading of an Ordinance to amend the Village’s liquor licenses regulations to be consistent with the State of Illinois Liquor Control Act. The Ordinance adopts the ‘100-foot rule’ that requires establishments selling liquor to be located greater than 100 feet from schools. The new Ordinance also eliminates liquor license application references to mortuary and game rooms because those restrictions are already in the Village’s game room licensing regulations.

• The Board tabled a vote on an Ordinance regulating small cell wireless telecommunication facilities. According to Village staff, the Ordinance is needed to update the existing 2007 Ordinance and bring it up to date with the Illinois Municipal League model ordinance.

• During Public Comments on non-agenda items resident Dorothy Tam addressed the Board. She is opening a retail store at 108. E. St. Charles Rd. to sell metaphysical items such as crystals, candles, tarot cards and astrology charts. Tam also wishes to offer psychic readings, palm and tarot card readings but these items are not addressed by Village Code.

According to Community Development Director Patrick Grill, any business use not listed in the Code is prohibited. Grill suggested that Tam seek guidance from the Board of Trustees.

The process would then go to Planning & Zoning Commission for consideration, a public hearing would also be scheduled and ultimately, a Board of Trustees vote would be required.

Trustee Chris Aiello cited the catchall retail use language in the Code and asked if Tam’s business would be covered under that language. According to Village Attorney James Binninger, the Board can move forward with a text amendment or ask the applicant to go through the Planning & Zoning process. Binninger added that some communities do not permit psychic/ card readings and some communities allow them as a special use.

The Board took a vote to see if this type of business use should be permitted in Villa Park. The Board rejected such uses by a vote of 6 to 1.

Tom Cullerton helps reunite residents with unclaimed possessions Illinois residents may now be reunited with unclaimed property sooner than in the past.

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) advanced Senate Bill 886 which would allow the Illinois’ Treasurer’s Office to facilitate a faster return of unclaimed property.

“This small step will reunite Illinois residents with their money sooner,” he said. “Data sharing between the Treasurer’s Office and Illinois Revenue Department will help cut government bureaucracy and get money and property in your hands faster.”

In Illinois, the State Treasurer’s Office is tasked with safeguarding unclaimed property, such as forgotten bank accounts, life insurance benefits and unused rebate cards. The office recovers hundreds of thousands of properties each year from government agencies, banks, insurers, utilities and other companies across the country that have been unable to return the properties to their rightful owners.

Then the office’s I-CASH program works to notify owners and reunite them with their money and other property. In the last year, the pro-

gram returned a record-setting $155 million to Illinois residents.

The Treasurer’s office currently holds more than 14 million properties valued at more than $2 billion.

“We need to cut government red tape wherever we can,” Cullerton said. “This will help get property in your hands sooner rather than later.”

Senate Bill 886 advanced out of the Senate’s State Government Committee with bipartisan support and now moves to the full Senate for consideration.

Cullerton’s DuPage County fix signed into law DuPage County will now be able to honor a series of voter referendums from the November 2016 election.

State law currently requires notice to be published no more than 30 days and not less than 10 days before an election. However, the notice was published in the local papers 33 days in advance due to a clerical error made by the election commission.

“This is a one-time deal to avoid costly litigation,” Cullerton said.

“Voters voiced their opinions in good faith, now it is time to abide by their wishes.”

This law is a one-time correction that only applies to DuPage County for the November 2016 elections.

Senate Bill 3319 passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support.

Slices of life

Parenting is hard from beginning to end

It is hard waiting for them to get here because waiting is never easy.

And this bout of waiting is the longest 10 months of your life, even though everyone claims it’s only nine. Once you’ve been there and done the math, you know the truth and the truth is often hard.

It is hard when they don’t sleep through the night because that means you don’t sleep through the night and day comes anyway and you are tired.

It is hard when they are learning to walk and you can’t always catch them so they tumble and fall and hit their chin on the edge of the coffee table and then they are hurt and they cry. You run to hold them and rock them and realize you are crying too.

It is hard when they walk up the steps of the kindergarten bus for the first time – with a backpack nearly as big as they are, and you stand on the sidewalk watching, wishing you could grab them and bring them home, but knowing you can’t and

It is hard when they miss the bus or catch a cold. It is hard when they are the first dropped from the roster or the last picked for kick ball. It is hard watching them struggle, even though you understand struggles are a necessary part of life.

It is hard helping them with homework after about third grade – especially in the subjects of math, English, social studies, science, geography, history and any foreign language.

It is hard when they make mistakes and the best thing for you to

do is not rescue them, because that would be the easy way out and would hurt them in the long run.

It is hard when their friends become smarter than you – or so they think.

It is hard on their first day of high school, because when you go to high school you are almost a grown up and you never thought they’d ever be that old.

It is hard the first time they back down the driveway in the family vehicle with a brand-new driver’s license in their pocket. On second thought, that’s not hard; it’s terrifying.

It is hard when they are out late past your normally wimpy parental bedtime and you try to wait up but your eyelids droop and you fall asleep despite your best efforts because you are tired.

It is hard on the last first day of high school because last first days are mostly always hard.

It is hard on the final last day of

high school because this means they are no longer almost a grown up, but a full-fledged one and that is even more terrifying then having them drive a car.

It is hard when they move into a place of their own and you help them, which requires hoisting a heavy futon up three flights of stairs because the building doesn’t have an elevator.

It is hard to drive away after you have finished helping move all their things into the new space. It is a quiet ride home without them. It’s a quiet that has never felt so heavy.

It is hard, walking by their empty bedroom on the way to your own, knowing you can crawl under the covers whenever you want with the guaranteed privilege of being able to sleep through the night if you desire.

It is hard when you wake up in the middle of the night and remember

Willowbrook’s Jessen finishes Addison Trail girls basketball team second at state wrestling Tiberi competes in girls’ wins playoff game state bowling finals

Willowbrook junior wrestler Jack Jessen placed second in the state at the recent Class 3A state finals held in Champaign.

Jessen lost 13-3 to Chicago Heights Marian’s Kordell Norfleet, a senior, in the 182-pound state final.

Norfleet improved to 43-0 on the season.

Jessen ended his junior season 50-1 overall. He brought a perfect 50-0 record into the title match.

Jessen was impressive in getting to the state finals. He won his first match 19-7 and then scored a 13-3 win in the quarterfinals. He reached the title match after logging a technical fall victory in 3:33 by a score of 17-0.

Jessen took third at 182 pounds last year and was second in the state at 170 pounds as a freshman.

His three-year varsity wrestling record now stands at 153-8.

Jessen’s teammate Dominic Ranieri split a pair of matches in the Class 3A 132-pound division.

He won his first match 10-8 and then lost by a technical fall in his second contest.

Ranieri finished the season 42-13.

Willowbrook bowling

Willowbrook bowler Jordan Tiberi competed in

the recent girls state bowling finals at Cherry Bowl Lanes outside of Rockford.

Tiberi tied for 110th place on the first day of competition. She averaged 169.2 pins per game.

TIberi had high games of 201, 178 and 171. She had a 545 series before the lunch break.

Tiberi finished with a 1,015 series for her six games.

Willowbrook girls basketball

The Willowbrook girls basketball team dropped a recent 36-33 decision to Oak Lawn in Class 4A regional play.

Oak Lawn led 11-10 after the first quarter and 21-16 at halftime. Willowbrook outscored Oak Lawn 6-2 in the third quarter but was outscored 13-11 in the fourth quarter.

Katelyn McCann led the Warriors with 10 points and four rebounds. Hanna Konrath had nine points, five rebounds and two steals. Maureen Schmid finished with seven rebounds, while Jayla Smith had four steals.

Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team placed eighth at the recent Downers Grove South sectional with 55 points.

AT-Willowbrook did not advance any swimmers or relays to the state finals meet.

Addison Trail graduates five seniors: Pikulyk, Mehmeti, Pham, Marie Baumgartner and Diana Graciano.

“We have eight kids coming back,” said Schader. “Those five seniors played a lot of minutes for us and played a lot of minutes as juniors as well. They’ve been around the program for a long time. Next year we are going to be young. We’ll have a lot of juniors and sophomores playing.” Pikulyk was named to the allWSC Gold team for her efforts this season.

“She had a very good season,” said Schader. “She really grew up and matured in the gym and on the court. The more time you put in and the more time you play the better you are going to be. Diamond is an exam271998 ple of that.”

Willowbrook boys basketball team shares conference title Warriors set new school record for wins in a season

The Willowbrook boys basketball team notched a pair of significant milestones recently.

For starters, the Warriors set a new program record for wins in a season with 24, breaking the old record of 23 that had stood since the 19691970 season.

Additionally, Willowbrook earned a share of the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title with Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South.

Willowbrook dropped a recent 5848 road WSC Gold game to Downers Grove South which played a part in the title-sharing scenario. The three tri-champions finished with 9-3 conference marks.

Earlier, the Warriors dropped a WSC Gold game to Hinsdale South.

Hinsdale won both regular-season meetings.

“Hinsdale South is a tough matchup for us,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins. “We got behind early and they were able to pull it out. We didn’t do a lot particularly well. We were flat and didn’t perform like we have most of the season. They shot the ball well and all the credit goes to them.”

Willowbrook also scored a 61-57 non-conference win against Woodstock Marian Central Catholic on senior night.

“We shot the ball particularly well from the 3-point line. We were 6-for-

17,” said Perkins. “It was a solid game. It was our senior night and all seven of the seniors started and played. Marian was a pretty big team and I thought we shot the ball well.”

Matas Masys led the Warriors with 20 points. Ethan Schuemer had 19 points and 18 rebounds.

“Ethan had another big game for us,” said Perkins.

In other earlier action, Willowbrook scored a 52-39 WSC Gold win over Morton.

“We did a good job limiting turnovers,” said Perkins. “We keyed in on their main guys and contained them.

We shot the ball not necessarily well, but we had good looks in that game.”

Schuemer led Willowbook with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Masys had nine points.

A 52-48 WSC Gold win against Leyden helped clinch no worse than a share of the title. “It was a close game, but we led beginning to end,” said Perkins.

“They run a 3/4-court zone and that slows the game down and forces us to play at their pace. We were forced to take outside shots and we went 6-for-15 from three.”

Schuemer led the Warriors with 15 points. Masys had 13 points, while Iman Reynolds had 11 points.

“We are thankful we accomplished most of our goals,” said Perkins. “We set out to win the Thanksgiving tournament, the Christmas tournament, the Martin Luther King tournament and win the conference. After conference we would like to win regionals and see if we can make a run. We are headed in the right direction. We’re starting to get ready for the environment we will see in the playoffs.”

IC Catholic Prep’s Bianchini wins state wrestling title

IC Catholic Prep junior wrestler Joey Bianchini is a state champion.

Bianchini was dominant in winning the Class 1A 113-pound state wrestling championship in Champaign this past weekend.

Bianchini is IC Catholic Prep’s first individual state wrestling champion.

Bianchini won the title with a 9-1 major-decision victory over Heyworth’s Gabe Spencer (who finished with a 39-2 record).

Bianchini’s path to the state-title match was equally impressive. He won his first match by an 11-3 major decision and then came back to score a technical fall in the quarterfinals (15-0 score). Bianchini then advanced to the state-title match with a 13-3 major-decision win in the semifinals.

He finished the year with a 38-1 record.

Bianchini’s teammate Victor Vargas also had success at the state meet.

Vargas placed sixth in the 220-pound

division in Class 1A. Vargas lost via pinfall in 3:30 to Stanford Olympia’s Keaton Fogler.

Vargas finished the season with a 36-12 mark.

Earlier, Vargas won his first match via pinfall in 1:13 and took his second match by fall in 50 seconds. Vargas lost in the state semifinals to Orion’s Logan Lee via fall in 1:46. Lee went on to win the state title at 220.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team defeated Illiana Christian 67-63 in a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game.

The visiting Knights trailed 16-7 after the first quarter and 28-22 at halftime. IC Catholic Prep outscored Illiana 20-9 in the third quarter and 28-24 in the fourth quarter.

Luke Ricobene led the knights with 16 points. Kevin Cheng added 12 points, while Matt Sutton had 10 points. Alex Meurer had nine points and Tony Gaudio had seven points.

Amari Reed had six points.
