Willowbrook’s Jessen wins state wrestling title By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT
Finishes high school career with 204 wins
Willowbrook senior wrestler Jack Jessen completed his high-school puzzle on the grandest stage of them all. Jessen went a perfect 4-0 en route to winning the Class 3A 183-pound
state title on the campus of the University of Illinois. Jessen finished the season 51-0 and ends his high-school career with four state wrestling medals. He also finished second twice and third once. Jessen opened the tournament with a pinfall win in only 27 seconds
against Lockport senior Yousif Salah (15-11 final record). He was equally in control in a 21-6 technical-fall win against Naperville Central junior Jackson Punzel (39-6 final record) in 5:39. Jessen then won his semifinal match against McHenry senior Jake Leske (34-9 final record) by a 13-3 major-decision count. That put Jessen in his third statechampionship match in four years. This time, Jessen was the last man standing. He downed Yorkville sophomore Nick Stemmet 8-3 for
the title. Stemmet finished the season 39-6. In the tournament, Jessen defeated the No. 3-ranked wrestler in the state in Stemmet in the title match and also faced Punzel and Leske who both were honorable-mention ranks by Illinois Matmen. Jessen was the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the state heading into the state finals. Jessen finished his Willowbrook career with a 204-8 mark and went 101-1 over the last two seasons. Jessen is the fifth Willowbrook wrestler to win a state champion-
ship—all occurring since 2001. Jessen joins two-time state champions Mike Behnke (2001-2002) and Steve Congenie (2010-2011) along with Matt Roth (2001) and Matt Rowland (2016). Jessen also is Willowbrook’s alltime most-decorated wrestler with his four state medals. In addition to the two state titles, Behnke finished fifth in the state in 2000. Rowland was fifth in the state in 2014 and second in 2015. The Independent will have more on Jessen in next week’s edition.

When Salt Creek Ballet recently visited a local grade school, the students learned how to portray storybook characters through dance. Here, a group of second graders perform as ostriches from the African folk tale, The Lonely Lioness. Their dance serves to plead with the lions not to take their baby chicks. p a to ark in the P a Vill to live agazine e yM c a pl A - Mone US
