Hit and run driver leaves path of destruction, injury

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23, police from Villa Park responded to reports of a hit-and-run crash on south Ardmore Ave. near the intersection of Jackson St. Two cars were hit; the driver of one vehicle was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was listed in critical condition.

The driver of the truck who allegedly caused the accidents was 62-year-old Lawrence Sieber of Glen Ellyn. According to police, Sieber ran the stop sign a the Ardmore and Jackson intersection and into the first car.

Sieber then fled from the area south to Roosevelt Road where he struck a second vehicle. The victim of the second crash was transported

to Elmhurst Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Fleeing the scene of that crash, Sieber proceeded west on Roosevelt where he was spotted by Lombard police officers who attempted to stop him. Sieber then crashed his truck into another vehicle that was stopped at a traffic light at Roosevelt and Finley.

According to police, Sieber struggled against police officers and had to be forcibly removed from his truck. He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm, leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated fleeing and eluding and aggravated reckless driving. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement: “What I find particularly disturbing in this case is the allegation that after Mr. Sieber crashed his truck into another vehicle he fled the scene in an effort to save his own hide.”

Sieber was scheduled to appear in front of DuPage Judge Daniel Guerin on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

According to DuPage County States Attorney Robert Berlin, Sharon Cermak, 60, of Villa Park has

been charged with one count of Financial Exploitation of an Elderly Person (Class 1 Felony) for allegedly stealing nearly a quarter million dollars from her elderly uncle over a two-year period.

VIP Occasions fire draws attention across Chicagoland

Elmhurst firefighters were still battling a blaze at VIP Occasions on north York Road late into the night on Thursday, Jan. 26. The fire began at about 1:30 p.m., according to one eye witness who said the second window of the building apparently just burst into flame and then spread to the rest of the building.

“I heard there was no one inside at the time, so there were likely no injuries,” said Steve Koch, a witness at the scene. “I saw paramedics on the scene, but they were not involved in any activity.

Orange flames continued shooting through the air for about an hour and billowed with dense black smoke that appeared to fill almost the entire block.

“Every time they thought they had the fire under control, it spread further,” Koch said. “You could see the orange blaze from a half a block away.”

Koch said about 2 or 2:30 p.m., the gas and electricity to the building was cut off. About 2:52 p.m., fire officials on the scene sent up a second ladder to continue fighting the fire.

The building, located at 351 N. York, opened in 1932 as a grocery store, according to the Elmhurst History Museum. After that it was a store for bridal gowns and formal-

wear ever since, purchased by two sisters who have owned the business since 1991.

“It’s sad, it’s a small business, lots of wedding gowns were lost,” said a nearby resident who was at the scene.

“We’re a small town really, it’s a small business, it’s really sad.”

Firefighters were dousing the house to the east of the building with water to avoid spreading.

More details reported Friday As of 9 p.m., the Independent observed the fire substantially reduced but still burning as firefighters aimed a steady stream from a hose directly at the orange flames. According to Elmhurst Fire Chief Thomas Freeman, crews were there most of the night.

Freeman said the building design as well as the gowns inside the store actually made the fire grow faster.

“There was an inordinate amount of combustibles inside the building,” he said.

He said there were a number of ceiling pockets, where the fires kept burning.

“When the ceiling collapsed, it ‘pancaked’ and as a result, trapped and hidden fires kept us on the scene all night long,” Freeman said.

The fire chief confirmed no one was inside the building when the fire broke out. The building is very close to the north firehouse in Elmhurst and officials at that site were reportedly passing by and noticed the flames about 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. It is unknown exactly when the fire broke out.

It was all over most of the news outlets throughout Chicagoland on Thursday, Jan. 26 that VIP Occasions, a bridal and formalwear store just north of downtown Elmhurst had a massive fire that burned for more than eight hours. It reportedly began about 1 p.m. and continued far into the night, due to air pockets in the ceiling that allowed fires to continue. The best news is that there was no one in the shop at the time of the fire and there were no injuries reported.

The shop owners have vowed to keep their promises to the brides whose gowns were ruined in the fire.

They have already set up a temporary location two doors down from the building.

Other bridal houses throughout the Chicago area have stepped up to help, offering free gowns to brides who find themselves without a wed-

ding dress due to the fire. One in particular was Eva’s Bridal in Oak Lawn, which suffered a similar fate in 2010, when it was virtually destroyed in a fire.

“Our hearts go out to those brides who had a dress there,” said Elmhurst resident Julie Miller Sheehan who was interviewed at the scene. “I got my wedding dress there and have

bought other formal gowns [at VIP Occasions] and their employees were just fabulous to work with.”

Sheehan tearfully said she was planning to donate her own wedding dress to anyone who might need it.

Freeman said it would likely take at least two days before the scene would be secure enough for an investigation into the cause could begin.

The DuPage Foundation’s newest initiative, Arts DuPage, will host a free launch party to unveil its first public offering, ArtsDuPage.org, a new online resource for our community. Bond set at $750,000 for man accused of DUI hit-and-run Berlin praises local police departments

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that bond has been set for a Glen Ellyn man accused of a hit and run crash in Villa Park that severely injured another motorist. Lawrence Sieber, 62, (d.o.b. 3/9/1954) of 89 S. Park Avenue, appeared in Bond Court last week where Judge Richard Russo set bond at $750,000 with 10% to apply. Sieber has been charged with one count of Aggravated DUI Causing Great Bodily Harm, one count of Leaving the Scene of an accident, one count of Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding and one count of Aggravated Reckless Driving. All charges are Class 4 Felonies.

It is alleged that on January 22, 2017, at approximately 4:50 p.m., Sieber ignored a stop sign at Ardmore and Jackson in Villa Park and t-boned another vehicle in the intersection, severely injuring the driver.

It is alleged that after the crash, Sieber fled the scene and was involved in three other crashes, one in Villa Park and two in Lombard. It is alleged responding officers located Sieber driving his truck on Roosevelt Road and began to pursue Sieber. It is further alleged that while stopped at a traffic light, Sieber rammed his truck into the car in front of him in an effort to elude arrest but was un-

successful. Sieber was taken into custody at this time following a brief struggle with officers in which he had to be forcibly removed from his truck.

“Operating a motor vehicle is a privilege, not a right,” Berlin said.

“And operating a motor vehicle after you have been drinking is not only against the law, it is extremely dangerous and puts the entire public at risk. What I find particularly disturbing in this case is the allegation that after Mr. Sieber crashed his truck into another vehicle he fled the scene in an effort to save his own hide. I would like to thank the Villa Park and Lombard Police Departments for their outstanding work in apprehending Mr. Sieber before he could do any further harm.”

Sieber’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 7, 2017 in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

The driver of the other vehicle is currently in the hospital in critical condition.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Spring soccer registration starts Feb. 22 Mark your calendars for spring soccer registration with Villa Park Recreation. Priority Registration will be held at the Iowa Community Center, 338 N. Iowa, on Wednesday, Feb. 22 from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. The fee during these priority dates is $52.

The 7-week spring soccer season will kick off on April 8. Practices begin the week of March 20.

STEM classes available for ages 3-5 Today’s children have been born into a digital era and as technology unfolds, tech education is a new and necessary part of core curriculum.

Villa Park Recreation, in partnership with Imagine Tomorrow, is offering unique classes for children ages 3-5 in which they will be introduced to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to prepare for school readiness. Mini-laptops will be provided. Children will learn keyboarding skills and learn how to respect technology as a learning tool, rather than a toy in isolation.

Ocean and Marine Life/Food and Nutrition is the theme of the class which will be held on Tuesdays from Feb. 14-March 14 from 9:30-10 a.m. at the Iowa Community Center, 338 N. Iowa. Simple Machines is the theme for the session running April 4-May 2. The fee is $72 for the five-

Ice skating still available at parks Villa Park Recreation announces that ice skating is now available at Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park, 318 E. Kenilworth and Jefferson Park (just east of Jefferson Swimming Pool), 341 N. Harvard Ave. The rinks are both available for family skating.

Jefferson Park also accommodates hockey players. Both rinks have recently been filled and are ready for skating.

Health Department to offer free dental screenings

The DuPage County Health Department is joining the American Dental Association (ADA) in the observance of the annual ‘Give Kids A Smile Day’ on Feb. 3.

Free dental screenings will be done by DuPage County Health Department dentists and volunteer dentists in two locations. In addition, the children will receive oral health education and a free oral healthcare kit.

The services will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to children ages 1 to 18, and to age 21 for those with special healthcare needs.

No appointment is necessary.

Free dental screenings will be offered at the DuPage Children’s Museum, 301 N. Washington St., Naperville.

This photo of the fire at VIP Occasions on York Road in Elmhurst was taken at about 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, when firefighters were still fighting the blaze that broke out sometime around 1 p.m. that afternoon. According to Elmhurst Fire Chief Thomas Freeman, there were a number of ceiling pockets, where trapped fires continued to burn into the night. In this photo, a firefighter points a hose directly at one of the ceiling fires seemingly to no avail. The fire chief also said the gowns inside made for an inordinate amount of combustible material, which further added to the difficulty in controlling the flames.

Boys swimming team goes undefeated in conference Squad shoots for first conference title Saturday at WSC Gold meet

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook co-op boys swimming team has put itself in a prime position to make some history.

AT-Willowbrook recently defeated Morton 118-29 in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet. The win gave AT-Willowbrook an undefeated WSC Gold regular season at 5-0.

The team can win the WSC Gold championship by winning the WSC Gold meet at Hinsdale South on Saturday.

“The guys are excited about this,” said AT-Willowbrook coach Neil Wahlgren. “They are excited about having the chance to win the conference title for the first time in boys swimming.”

AT-Willowbrook dominated its meet at Morton. “The guys did well in everything,” said Wahlgren. “We took first, second and third in a lot of events. We pretty much swept most of the events.”

With AT-Willowbrook having no home competition pool, Morton was gracious in hosting AT-Willowbrook’s senior night that honored Jake Roucka and Koji Buzuayene.

“We only have two seniors this year and it was a good way for them to have a real senior meet,” said Wahlgren. “On top of that we went undefeated in conference, which is an awesome feat for us.”

Roucka was lauded for his performance in the butterfly this season.

“Jake has been our top flyer this year,” the coach said. “It’s going to be hard to replace him. He’s done a great job. He’s won almost all his 100 flies and won all of them in conference.”

Wahlgren noted the team overcame a sickness that swept through it recently. “The guys dealt with a big sickness throughout the team.

We overcame that and were able to take second at the Shepard invitational,” he said.

AT-Willowbrook took second out of 12 teams at Shepard.

Jacob Grygo took first in the 50 freestyle race that features 22 swimmers. Mikey Strycharz was second out of 20 in the 100.

AT-Willowbrook’s 200 relay of Evan Zimmerman, Grygo, Strycharz and Jack Burns took first, while the 400 relay team of Jack Wentworth, Grygo, Strycharz and Burns also placed first.

AT-Willowbrook’s 200 frosh-soph relay team took first with Burns, Eric Hoda, Marco Chaidez and Zimmerman. The frosh-soph 200 medley relay was second with Zimmerman, Aidan Nichols Chaidez and Hoda.

AT-Willowbrook’s varsity medley relay was third with Zimmerman, Lucas Walsh, Roucka and Strycharz.

“It was a strong performance for all our guys,” said Wahlgren. “It was fun to be able to bring home a lot of medals and another team plaque.”

AT-Willowbrook also recorded a recent 94-78 non-conference win against Fenton.

Wahlgren also has been thrilled with the progress of his relay teams, which includes the likes of Burns and Zimmerman.

“Jack Burns has stayed strong for us,” he said. “Evan Zimmerman has come into his own and has dropped time in each event. His backstroke has looked strong. Our relays are really strong with Jack, Evan, Mikey and Jacob Grygo. Lucas Walsh and Jake Roucka have really helped us out in the medley relay. Lucas has helped us in the breaststroke

The Willowbrook girls bowling team recently scored a West Suburban Conference win against Morton at Striker Lanes.

The win closed out Willowbrook’s WSC regular-season record at 5-3.

The Warriors ended up tied for fourth in the conference.

Willowbrook placed four girls on the all-WSC team. Junior Dana Sasenick placed second in the conference in average at 183.56. Senior Jordan Tiberi placed third at 182.96.

Freshman Makaylah Jones placed 12th with a 170.25 and sophomore Katherine Pettinger was in 15th place in the conference at 166.52.

“I am very proud of how the team has been competing all year long,” said Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen. “I feel the girls are focused more

than ever and are excited to make a run at state this year.”

Allen said one key focus throughout the year has been on strategy at the larger tournament events. “We have been working all year on having the ability to finish off invites,” he said. “During the tough games, the girls have been working on staying positive and keeping up the energy.”

In other recent action, the Warriors won the Hinsdale South Ed Puck 10-Pin Tournament. Willowbrook finished with a total pinfall of 5,924.

The Warriors had a first series with games of 1,002, 980 and 1.015 and finished up with games of 1,000, 1,005 and 992. The Warriors nearly hit the 3,000-pin mark in the first series, finishing with a 2,997.

Sasenick finished second individually in the tournament with a 1,095 series. She had games of 202, 182, 163, 186, 166 and 196 , posting nearly identical 547 and 548 series.

Tiberi took fourth with a 1,080 series. She had games of 220 and 214 in her second series and had a 179 to close out her first series. She finished with a 582 series in games 4-6.

I hardly ever get sick. I guess I’m lucky that way. Besides, I’m a mom.

Despite what the commercial says, we don’t get sick days. It’s easier to take care of others when you don’t need anyone to take care of you. So it’s convenient to be in good health – robust and well with a constant and never-ending supply of acetaminophen and throat lozenges to dispense to the young folks living with you.

I’m tough, but unfortunately I’m not totally immune. I found this out last week when I got hit with a bigger-bugger of a cold. A common cold for goodness sakes. Usually I can barrel right through a batch of the average and ordinary sniffles. This time the sniffles conquered my entirety in an overwhelming manner.

Each morning for about a week I wanted to get up out of bed and head straight for the couch. No, I take that back. Each morning for about a week I wanted to stay in bed. Period.

Whoever coined the phrase “common cold” obviously never had one.

There is nothing common about an inability to breathe like a normal person. My nose alternated between complete stuffiness and uncontrolled runniness 24/7. The inability to breathe led to an inability to sleep.

When I did manage to snooze, I woke up mouth wide open with my tongue dried up like a piece of beef jerky. My throat was sore. I had an annoying tickle of a cough. My ears were plugged. My head ached. My shoulders ached. My neck ached.

My back ached. I think even my hair ached. My nose was chapped from blowing. There seemed to be a fogginess surrounding me. I found it hard to think clearly and was literally at a loss for words. I started hoarding Kleenex. I was miserable.

Unfortunately couch time was not available in the quantity I desired. Life marches on – no matter how achy-breaky one might feel.

The people living with me were sympathetic to my plight. And, even though my family tries to help (and they do) certain things – like flushing toilets and putting the milk back in the fridge – remained relegated to me.

I muddled through with lozenges under my tongue and Kleenex in my pocket. I drank weak green tea in an attempt to stay hydrated and warm.

I popped a couple of acetaminophen tablets every four hours as needed. I rested when I could, and even when I couldn’t.

Relief was elusive, even with the medication. I wanted a nap and clear nostrils. Neither was available. I worried the rest of my family would get the crud. If it hit me hard, it would hit them harder. That much was a for sure. Luckily that didn’t happen. Despite my sneezing and coughing and inadvertent germ-sharing, no one else got sick, which is the happy ending to this sad and sniffley story.

I guess the gang I live with is tougher than I thought. Either that, or I am a wimpy mom, which I am not.

That term is clearly an oxymoron.

It’s a universal truth: Moms can’t be wimps. We don’t even get sick days.
