Ardmore teacher among finalists for Golden Apple Awards Golden Apple, a leading Illinois nonprofit committed to developing great teachers, today announced the finalists for the organization’s prestigious educator awards: the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching and the Stanley C. Golder Leadership Award.

Dawn Majer, Ardmore Elementary School, Villa Park, has been named a 2018 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching Award Finalists.

A record number of nominations for the 2018 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching were submitted this year, totaling more than 650 Pre-K through 3rd grade teachers from the Chicagoland area. Five percent of nominees were selected as finalists, for a total of 30 educators who will be considered for the award this spring.

The 2018 finalists include the highest percentage of Chicago Public School teachers ever selected, many of whom are bilingual and teach in two languages to help English-language learners.

“This year’s award finalists, selected through an anonymous process, represent accomplished educators who are embracing very complex assignments to enrich and advance the lives of students,” said Alicia Winckler, Golden Apple President and CEO. “These awards shine a bright light on the incredible work happening in our schools.

GreenMan Theatre’s dinner shows at Angelo’s are an annual event, and help raise funds for the local theatre. Tickets are $55 and include the show and a family-style Italian dinner. Cash bar and a chance to mingle with the cast begins an hour before curtain.

Prizes are given for guessing the murderer at the end of the show, and the audience is invited to “dress up” for the evening in clothes appropriate to the era of the show. A short question and answer period with environmental advocates will follow the film, facilitated by Dr. Teri J. Walker, Professor of Political Science, Department Chair and Sustainability Committee member at Elmhurst College. The Elmhurst College Jazz Festival enters its 51st year with an allstar lineup of the industry’s greatest performing artists, as well as some of the country’s best college bands.

This year’s lineup of headliners includes the “evocative, majestic, magical” Maria Schneider Orchestra, trumpeter Sean Jones, trombonist Jiggs Whigham, drummer Matt Wilson, and pianist/composer Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra.

Each February, the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival welcomes the industry’s top professional musicians and the nation’s leading college bands for three days of performances and education. The college bands take turns performing for some of the greatest names in professional jazz today, who offer critiques and award honors in a variety of areas.

Village can’t afford to fix Lufkin Pool? Wanna bet?

A discouraged but hopeful group of individuals called the Save Lufkin Pool group has confronted the Village Board about allowing not one but two Village-owned swimming pools to fall into such states of disrepair that BOTH should actually be closed down, but at the very least ONE. Rather than admit their shortsightedness, during the recent bitter-cold winter days when residents were shoveling snow and not paying attention, the Village Board elected by a quick vote not to re-open the pool in the upcoming season and just passed it off with Village President Al Bulthuis’ dismissive comment: “Sorry, residents.”

Go home and tell that to your kids.

“Sorry kids.” They’ll understand.

They’ll probably say: “We don’t mind if we can’t swim this summer, Mom and Dad. It’ll allow us to get a jump start on our fall reading lists for the next school year.” Yeah, that’ll happen.

The Village Board countered the Lufkin pool enthusiasts by virtually saying, “Well, WE can’t find any money in the budget to keep the pool open, so let’s hear you come up with some ideas of your own.”

Well, by golly, they did!

By 2013, Villa Park had 11 establishments with 44 gaming machines.

Total wagering was $4,244,908 in 2013, total winnings were $3,877,625, leaving net wagering activity at $367,283. At a 30% tax rate, the state received $91,821, while Villa Park brought in $18,364.

Let’s pause for a moment to look

at one of those figures. People in and around Villa Park spent more than $4 million on video-gaming in this Village. That is a lot of dough spent in our Village and you know those people actually spent a lot more.

Today, there are 20 establishments with 94 gaming units. Here are the dollars collected year-by-year: 2013: $ 18,364 2014: $ 169,513 2015: $ 253,142 2016: $ 295,185 2017: $ 334,312 Five Year Total: $ 1,070,518 More than $1 million in incremental revenues.

The Village has averaged about $214,000 in gaming revenues per year over the first five years. Let’s say we spend down seven days worth of cash reserves (about $450,000). Not to be flip The Lufkin group intends to stay organized and eventually, become a “Friends” fundraising arm for the local pools, similar to Friends of the Library. They should name the group FLIP – Friends of LufkIn Pool.

Because right now, FLIP needs to flip the decision made by this Board of Trustees and if that doesn’t work, maybe next spring, some of these officials need to be “flipped.”

Then we can all say, “Sorry, Village officials.” Not to be flip, or anything.

What about those cash reserves?

The best argument the group proposed was the idea of dipping into the Village’s cash reserves. Most municipalities maintain cash reserves for 90-120 days. Villa Park has maintained 120 days of cash reserves since 2013. That number of days refers to how long the Village could survive, should there be an economic downturn that offers no new revenues or income. It measures the number of days the Village’s cash-on-hand could continue providing services and paying employees.

Of course, any town has to be cautious about dipping into cash reserves, but could Villa Park ever actually run out of money as a Village?

Think that would ever happen?

Wanna bet?

Five years ago, Trustees DID have the foresight to allow a certain “gift that keeps on giving” to the Village – video-gaming. Sometimes it seems like Village officials want residents to forget about that little annual windfall that, for the past five years, has been coming in and quietly deposited into the general coffers – to the tune of more than $1 million.

Where is that money?

To be fair, most municipalities put income from a revenue stream such as that right into the general fund, so this is not to imply the funds have been misplaced. The Village has just allowed residents to forget about them, so they’ll keep buying the old “we don’t have any money” excuse.

Daniel Geiter was a struggling community college student and a convicted felon when Sister Susan Sanders helped him get the support he needed to stay in school—and eventually earn a doctorate. Today, Geiter is repaying that gift as the founder of the Susan M. Sanders Teaching and

Learning Center, a Pilsen-based nonprofit that helps other former inmates pursue a college education.

Join the Pickleball craze and sign up to play this fun game that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong. Pickleball players use wooden paddles and whiffle balls to play on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) is partnering with the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois and the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability to host a free State Income Tax Relief Seminar on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Villa Park Library, located at 305 S. “With all the changes to the state and federal tax codes, it is important that taxpayers are aware of the state tax deductions and credits available to them,” said Conroy. “This seminar will ensure that residents have the opportunity to ask experts about how they can take home more of

Carol Portman, president of the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois and Ralph Matire, executive director of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability will give a detailed presentation about the various state tax credits, deductions and exemptions available to local taxpayers.

Police announces Super Bowl weekend enforcement numbers The Villa Park Police Department today announced it made 2 DUI arrests and issued 5 child safety seat citations during the recent Super Bowl crackdown. The Villa Park Police Department also made 4 arrests for persons driving on Suspended or Revoked licenses and 2 other alcohol related arrests.

The Super Bowl weekend Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket enforcement effort ran from Friday, Feb. 2, through the early morning hours of Monday, Feb. 5, to keep impaired drivers off the

roads and get more people to buckle up.

“Motorists should continue to heed the warning that we are serious about cracking down on impaired drivers and seat belt law violators.

We do it to save lives,” said Deputy Chief William Lyons.

The recent law enforcement campaign was made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns.

Edward-Elmhurst Health is now offering the latest advance in roboticassisted surgery with the acquisition of the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. This addition brings to four the number of robotic systems at Edward-Elmhurst hospitals — the new Xi and three da Vinci Si Surgical Systems.

Both the Si and Xi offer the benefits of the robots’ highly flexible wrists: precise and steady movements, and access to difficult-to-reach areas. But the Xi takes the technology to another level, making it possible to use roboticassisted minimally invasive surgery for certain complex operations that would otherwise involve large-incision surgery, longer hospital stays and postoperative pain.

With the Xi system, patients are often out of the hospital in two or three days, with little or no reliance on opioids for pain relief.

Edward Hospital, in Naperville, recently marked its 3,000th robotic-assisted procedure using da Vinci, which was first acquired in 2010.

“Initially, the Si system was used for simple surgeries, primarily in gynecology and urology, but eventually its use was expanded to bigger surgeries, such as inguinal hernia repairs and some colorectal surgeries,” says surgeon Peter Petratos, MD, medical director of robotics surgery at Edward Hospital and member of Edward Medical Group.

Before Edward acquired the new Xi system in November 2017, Dr. Petratos used the Si system in an operation to remove the colon from a young woman suffering from ulcerative colitis.

“With the Si system, you are locked in to one confined area at a time. Working on a larger area often requires unattaching the equipment from the patient, repositioning her, and then reattaching

it through a new incision,” says Dr. Petratos. “If we had had the new Xi for this surgery, it would have required fewer incisions and been technically easier.”

The Xi features an instrument arm that passes over the operating table, eliminating the need to move the patient and allowing the surgeon-operated robot access from virtually any angle.

Also, the bed responds to the robot’s movements, angling the patient as needed.

Some of the Xi’s other innovations include: More flexible options for attaching the endoscope, improving visibility of the surgical site Equipment modifications that extend reach and range of motion for better access to all areas of the abdomen and chest

Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team fares well at conference meet Thompson wins 100 backstroke title

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team had a host of strong performances at the recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet.

AT-Willowbrook’s Zack Thompson won the 100 backstroke.

Second-place finishers for AT-Willowbrook included the 200 medley relay team of Thompson, Aidan Nichols, Evan Zimmerman and Jacob Grygo.

Thompson also placed second in the butterfly. Kyle Haake was second in the 500, while Jack Burns also earned a second-place finish.

The 200 relay team of Patrick Florey, Grygo, Mikey Strycharz and Burns took second, while the 400 relay team of Grygo, Jack Wentworth, Strycharz and Burns also were second.

Zimmerman was third in the IM, while Burns also placed third in the 50. Strycharz was fourth in the 100 and Matt Sawicki was fourth in the 500.

“My assistant coach Amy Martello and I were proud of the great swims we saw,” AT-Willowbrook coach Jennifer Burns said. “Our swimmers had some great time drops, and our freshman/sophomore and JV teams had personal-best times.”

Burns will look for more significant varsity time drops come sectionals. “Our varsity squad saw some personal-best times, but they still are training to have their best time drops occur at sectionals. We had a few illnesses and injuries that came into play toward the end of the season, but I was happy with the team’s performance and am looking forward to building on our successes.”

Burns felt her frosh-soph team made big strides in its conference meet. “I was really proud of my fro-

sh-soph team,” she said. “Many of these athletes have not trained for the different types of high-school events. They really rose to the challenge and swam their hardest.”

Burns was impressed with how the varsity team competed for top spots in the conference. She noted Thompson won the backstroke title and was second in the butterfly.

Burns had second-place times in the 50 and 100, while Zimmerman was third in the IM and Haake was second in the 500.

“The varsity swimmers were battling it out to finish in the top two for

each event,” said Burns.

Burns said her team will be ready Saturday at the Downers Grove North. “As my first time training these athletes, I want to make sure each athlete will have the best performance possible,” she said. “I expect to see some great swims at Downers Grove North.”

At the JV conference meet, the 200 medley relay team of Sebastian Martinez, Jeremy Vaupell, Robert Fagan and Ben Jackson took third.

Vaupell took fourth in the 50, while Martinez was third in the 100.

In the frosh-soph meet, Eric Hoda

won the 100. The 200 medley relay team of Nick Mitchell, Henrik Cokalli, Tom Florey and Cole McGinnis took second. Sean Pienkos was second in the IM. Hoda was second in the 50, while Pienkos was second in the 500. Tom Florey was second in the breaststroke. McGinnis, Pienkos, Mitchell and Hoda took second in the 400 relay.

Mitchell was third in the backstroke, while the 200 relay of Christian Medina, Cokalli, Pienkos and Hoda took third. Tom Florey was fourth in the 50 free, while Mitchell was fourth in the 100 free.

The Fenton boys swimming team had some success at the recent Independent Conference Championship meet held at Riverside-Brookfield.

The Bison had a total of four swimmers earn all-conference honors. The relay team of Nik Fischer, Conrad Oberski, Matt Janovsky and Lucas Feddersen earned two medal-winning third-place finishes.

Fischer won the 100 backstroke and was third in the 100. Feddersen and Oberski finished second and third respectively in the 50. Janovsky was a medalist in the 100 butterfly.

Matt McElroy, Maciej Sporna, Ivan Golovin and Jordan Loyola also had strong swims to help Fenton finish fifth at the varsity level, more than doubling last year’s point totals.

Junior-varsity swimmers Dan Roucka, Brendon Dal, Paul Sofineti, Joe Mazariegos, Brandon Stiltner, Zayn Kahn and Daniel Wiecorek all were cited for strong swimming in the meet.

Fenton finished the regular season with a 5-3 mark in dual meets with its losses by scores of 89-80, 90-76 and 87-84. “This was our best season in recent years,” said Fenton assistant

coach Dan Hennebry.

Fenton took third at the Leyden Eagle Invite and third at the Elk Grove Invitational. Each meet featured eight teams.

Fischer, a freestyle and backstroke specialist, won conference in the backstroke and was third in the 100, setting personal records in both events and dropping two seconds in the backstroke to win the title.

Oberski, whose strengths are freestyle sprints and the breaststroke, was third in the 50 and fifth in the breaststroke at conference. Feddersen, a freestyle generalist ranging from sprints where he took second in conference in the 50 and swam a personal-best 50.69 in the 100 (sixth in the conference) to a third-place showing in the 500 at the West Chicago Invitational.

Janovsky is a butterfly (fifth at conference) and individual medley (IM) specialist. Fischer, Obserski, Feddersen and Janovsky all are juniors.

The IC Catholic Prep wrestling team continued its impressive season at the recent Class 1A Chicago Hope sectional.

Defending state-champion Joey Bianchini will get to defend his title in Champaign next weekend after winning the 138-pound sectional title.

Bianchini was a 16-7 major-decision winner in the final and will bring a 36-3 record into the state finals.

Freshman Kyle Franklin also is headed to state after placing second at 160 pounds. He lost by fall in the sectional-title match.

Franklin upped his record to 23-11 at the sectional.

Victor Vargas also took second at 195. He lost via fall in the title match, but will bring a 28-6 record into the state finals.

Michael Johnson was third at 220 pounds. He was a 1-0 winner in the third-place match and now has a 1511 record heading into state.

David Vargas rounds out the Knights’ state contingent. He won the 285-pound sectional title with a 7-3 decision in the championship match.

David Vargas is now 22-5.

In earlier action, the Knights won the Class 1A Lisle regional title, giving the program its first-ever postseason title. IC Catholic Prep edged Westmont 177-170 for the title. Lisle was a close third with 168 points.

State lawmakers have proven unable to constrain their fiscal recklessness absent a real requirement to do so.

That’s why in its Budget Solutions 2019 recommendations, the Illinois Policy Institute is putting forward a real restraint. It’s called a smart spending cap: tie government growth to economic growth.

Illinois’ economy has grown at an average rate of 2.4 percent over the past 10 years, according to data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Census Bureau. Rauner and state lawmakers should champion that rate of economic growth as a cap on state spending via a constitutional amendment.

The Texas and Tennessee state constitutions, for example, both contain spending caps based on residents’ ability to pay.

Thankfully for Illinoisans, there’s already bipartisan support for such a cap, with constitutional amendments filed in both the House and the Senate by state Rep. Allen Skillicorn, R-East Dundee, and state Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, respectively.

Mandating more reasonable spending growth is the first step in a journey back to solvency for Illinois. The cap provides certainty today for a more responsible state government tomorrow.

Compare that with the marquee budgetary proposals from the leading Democratic gubernatorial candidates.

J.B. Pritzker, Chris Kennedy and Daniel Biss all want to hike taxes, but none of them will say by how much—or even which Illinoisans specifically will end up paying more.

How can families and businesses make plans for that?

Among other harmful effects, a progressive income tax would invite enormous uncertainty into the lives of Illinoisans. If you think state lawmakers are tax-happy now, wait until they’re able to apply any rate to any income group whenever they need extra cash.

A spending cap, on the other hand, would empower Illinoisans to make bold plans without fear of out-of-control government spending, and the tax hikes that come along with it.

Gov. Bruce Rauner delivered his fourth and possibly final State of the State address in Springfield Jan. 31.

The governor took direct aim at a few politically popular issues. One focal point was a bill that would bar lawmakers from working as property tax attorneys. Another was term limits.

But Rauner also gave a clue about his upcoming budget address, saying he would propose a balanced budget. If he can pull that off, it would be the first truly balanced budget his administration has proposed during his time in office.

Illinois’ most recent budget, the one lawmakers passed over the governor’s veto in July 2017, is emblematic of how the state became such a fiscal basket case. Despite a $5 billion tax hike, it already contains a deficit of more than $1 billion. And that deficit is projected to exceed $2 billion next fiscal year without spending reforms.

Much more daunting than the state’s massive budget deficit, however, is the deficit in residents’ certainty about the future and their trust in the state.

How can Illinois possibly dig its way out of all this debt? How much of the budget can pensions really eat up? When will the next tax hikes come—and how high will they be?

These have all become pressing questions because lawmakers have had free rein to grow spending far beyond what residents can afford.

From 2005-2015, state spending per capita grew 25 percent faster than per capita personal income in Illinois. Many communities saw an even greater disparity. In Rock Island County, for example, state spending per capita grew more than 70 percent faster than residents’ incomes over that time.

In a healthy economy, it’s OK for government spending to grow. But when spending growth outpaces economic growth, it forces policymakers to raise taxes or borrow money. State lawmakers have been eager to do both. And that injects uncertainty into the lives of Illinoisans.

Families and businesses can’t plan for their futures without some degree of certainty about the world they’ll live in five, 10 or 20 years down the road. The state of the state meddles with those plans.

When faced with too much uncertainty, people leave. And potential newcomers take pause.

Indeed, this is the biggest budget problem of all—a shrinking population for four years running, driven primarily by people leaving the state. The net outmigration of people from Illinois to other states since 2010 is equivalent to the population of the four largest cities
