District 88 reaches agreement with teachers union

On Jan. 22, the District 88 Board of Education voted to approve a twoyear Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Board of Education and the American Federation of Teachers, Local 571.

The contract will go into effect on July 1, 2018, and will run through June 30, 2020. The agreement is a collaboration between the district’s teachers’ association, Board of Education and administration. District 88 Board of Education President Donna Craft Cain said the contract is fair to teachers, while also being responsible with taxpayer resources, and it allows the district to attract, hire and retain a high-quality teaching staff.

In year one (2018-19), the contract will provide a base salary increase of 2 percent, which is 95 percent of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reported for the calendar year ending on Dec. 31, 2016.

In year two (2019-20), the contract will provide a base salary increase of 1.8 percent, which is 85 percent of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reported for the calendar year ending on Dec. 31, 2017. The agreement also allows for provisions in the event of a property tax freeze to ensure the district can maintain its stable budget.

In both years, step and lane advancement on the schedule will continue, as is the district’s normal practice.

Veterans nominations sought for Bicentennial ‘Honor 200’ event

In celebration of Illinois’ Bicentennial celebration, DuPage County is encouraging residents to nominate veterans to be honored by the Illinois Bicentennial Committee and the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) later this year.

The organizations will join together to honor as many as 200 veterans at a celebration of statehood event on Dec. 3, 2018. Those chosen to receive awards for their contributions and achievements will attend a gala event at the United Center in Chicago.

“DuPage County has a long and storied history of military service,” said Janice Anderson, DuPage County Board Representative on the Illinois Bicentennial Committee. “We should recognize our local veterans for their courage and selflessness, and we hope to have several DuPage County veterans represented at the gala.”

Nominations can be mailed to the Illinois Department of Affairs in the George Dunne County Building, 69 West Washington, Suite 1620, Chicago, 60602. The deadline is July 31, 2018.

AAUW book sale so successful, two scholarships now available Applicants sought from Elmhurst, Addison, Villa Park, Bensenville Thanks to an extremely successful annual used book sale in August, the AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch has announced that it is able to offer two scholarships of $3,000 each to women who need financial assistance to continue education at the undergraduate or graduate level. Applicants are eligible if they are residents of Elmhurst, Addison, Bensenville, Berkeley, Northlake, Oak Brook, or Villa Park.

In addition to being from one of the above communities, the applicant must be continuing her education after completing at least 12 credit hours at an accredited college or university and be age 25 or older. The applicant may be studying full or part time.

Scholarship requirements as well as the application form for the scholarship can be found on the AAUW website at aauwelmhurst.org. The application deadline is April 1, 2018.

Students in grades 6-8 invited to free ice skating event Friday Night Connect offers place for middle-schoolers to intermingle

On Feb. 2, students in sixth through eighth grades are invited to get connected and attend a special Friday Night Connect event.

From 6 to 8 p.m., students can enjoy free ice skating and curling at Lombard Christian Reformed Church’s Corner Ice at 2020 S. Meyers Road in Lombard (pending weather conditions – visit lombardcrc.org for rink updates). There also will be free pizza and hot chocolate. Participants must have a parent/guardian complete the consent and release form at dupage88.net/ FNC2017-18.

The goal of Friday Night Connect is to provide a place where students

can come together and help one another grow and develop, while enjoying a fun environment filled with friends, food and games. Participants will be mentored by high school students (with adult supervision).

The program is free and offers a safe place where kids can relax with their peers and take part in exciting activities to help them make positive decisions. Each session also consists of a seasonal “secret topic,” where the students complete an activity based on a given theme.

Friday Night Connect was launched in October 2016 as an initiative of Willowbrook High School, the Villa Park/Lombard Clergy As-

sociation, the Villa Park Police Department and local governmental officials. For their efforts, the group members earned a state-level Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (INSPRA) in May 2017. Man sentenced to three years for Prairie Path attacks DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a Winfield man charged with attacking two women on separate occasions on the Illinois Prairie Path had been sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Matthew Grover, 32, of 26W603 Lindsey, appeared in Court, where he entered a plea of guilty to two counts of Aggravated Battery (Class 3 Felony) in front of Judge Brian Telander, who handed down the sentence.

On April 26, 2017, Grover ap-

peared in bond court where bond was set at $200,000 with 10% to apply.

He has remained in custody since that time.

On April 24, 2017, at approximately 4 p.m., authorities received a call that a woman had been attacked on the Illinois Prairie Path. In the attack, the man approached the woman from behind and put her in a “bear hug.”

The attacker released the woman and fled when joggers approached from the opposite direction. An investigation into the attack uncovered a very similar incident near the same loca-

tion on the Prairie Path that occurred in late September or early October 2016. The investigation into the two attacks ultimately led authorities to Grover.

“DuPage County has one of the most beautiful public trail systems in the country enjoyed by thousands of people every year,” Berlin said. “Mr. Grover however, took advantage of this natural asset to physically attack women.”

Grover will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Cullerton reconvenes bipartisan committee on veterans care State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) will reconvene a bipartisan committee this month to further examine Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks which resulted in 13 deaths at the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy. The bipartisan joint House and Senate hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 7.

“Our veterans have survived combat zones and traveled abroad to protect and defend our democratic values,” Cullerton said. “It’s pathetic that the greatest danger they

now face is the drinking water in a state facility. Our bipartisan committee has unanswered questions.

The sooner we examine this brutality, the faster we can implement a long-term solution to remedy this situation.”

Cullerton has sent formal requests to key government agencies for documentation of any correspondence pertaining to the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak. He aims to identify weaknesses in protocols set up by the governor’s office and to ensure

Illinois’ veterans receive quality service and care.

“There is a bipartisan consensus among committee members that our veterans were failed by a lack of leadership and direction from the governor and his administration,” he said. “We need a complete picture to guarantee the state is following proper protocol and to evaluate what can be done to ensure our veterans receive the excellent care they deserve.”

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a Downers Grove man charged with repeatedly shaking his three-month-old Timothy daughter has been Churchill sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Timothy Churchill, 22, of 4220 Lindley, appeared in Court where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Battery to a Child, (Class X Felony) in front of Judge John Kinsella, who handed down the sentence. On February 3, 2016, Churchill appeared in bond court where bond was set at $1 million with 10% to apply. He has remained in custody since that time.

On Jan. 23, 2016, at approximately 2 a.m., Churchill and the mother of his daughter, who lives in Naperville, brought the girl to the emergency room at Edward Hospital in Naperville.

The baby was unresponsive. Upon discovering substantial head injuries, the baby was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital where she underwent emergency brain surgery to relieve intracranial pressure.

An investigation conducted by the Naperville Police Department into the source of the infant’s injuries revealed that Churchill violently shook his daughter causing significant head injuries including bilateral subdural hematomas and retinal hemorrhaging.

“The sentence handed down

by Judge Kinsella underscores the severity of the injuries that Mr. Churchill inflicted upon his own infant daughter,” Berlin said. “Child abuse has no place in a civilized society and remains a top priority in my office as the victims in such cases are arguably society’s most vulnerable.”

Churchill will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

What’s happening at Villa Park Village Hall

The Villa Park Board of Trustees meeting held at Village Hall on Monday, Jan. 22, began with Village Clerk Hosannah Korynecky calling the meeting to order. Village President Al Bulthuis was absent from the meeting, and the Board of Trustees voted to install Trustee Nick Cuzzone as President Pro Tem. • The Board voted unanimously to approve the Consent Agenda, including Minutes from the Jan. 8, 2018 Board of Trustees meeting and the Village Bill Listings dated Jan. 2, Jan. 8 and Jan. 15, 2018, in the amount of $1,070,283.

• The Board also voted unanimously to approve the second (final) reading of an Ordinance clarifying and amending the number of liquor licenses in Villa Park. A ‘scrivener’s’ error was corrected in 2018 liquor license renewals -- Victoria’s Mexican Cocina did not renew. Also, a new Class I license was issued for Montecasino restaurant and a Class EE liquor license for Picante Wings was also approved as part of the Ordinance.

• The Board voted to approve a Resolution to hold a required hearing pursuant to the Bond Issue Notification Act. A public hearing is required before issuance/sales of sales taxbacked bonds. This meeting, scheduled for Jan. 22, was approved to discuss the issuance of Series 2018A bonds (Alternate Revenue Bonds) for storm water projects and the second trench of General Obligation (G.O.)

bonds for the library project.

• A Resolution authorizing the final change order to the contract between Villa Park and A Lamp Concrete Contractors, Inc. for the 2017 Central Boulevard Improvement Project was approved by the Board.

The final amount reflected a deduction of $119,901 after the quantities of materials as measured in the field was finalized. The adjusted final contract amount is $764,844.

More discussion about Lufkin Pool • During the Public Comments on Non-Agenda Items portion of Monday’s meeting, several residents from the ‘Save Lufkin Pool’ group spoke to the Board of Trustees. The group presented several reasons and strategies to save the pool. The Board of Trustees voted in November, 2017 not to spend approximately $450,000 for needed maintenance including a new liner. This decision effectively closed Lufkin Pool and plans were then made to demolish the 60-plus year-old facility.

• Trustee Cuzzone thanked all the speakers from ‘Save Lufkin Pool’ and said that Village Manager Richard Keehner was ‘taking copious notes’ on the various suggestions put forth by the group and said the Board and staff would ‘definitely be discussing this down the road.”

• Trustee Bob Wagner said he applauded the Save the Lufkin Pool group for organizing and bringing their information to the Board.

• Also during the public comment section of Monday’s meeting Kathy Gilroy spoke in favor of raising the age limit for purchasing tobacco products to 21 from the current 18.

Daly appointed new Assistant Principal at Willowbrook A new Assistant Principal will join the administrative team at Willowbrook starting on July 1, but it will be a familiar face to the school and community.

During its Jan. 22 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education approved the administration’s recommendation to name Bob Daly as Willowbrook’s new Assistant Principal.

Daly will succeed Tom Cantlin in that position, who will retire at the end of the 2017-18 school year, after 32 years of service with District 88. The district wishes Cantlin well in his future endeavors and thanks him for his leadership and dedication.

Daly joined Willowbrook in 2008 as a Dean of Students and transitioned to his current role as Athletic Director in 2011.

The school/district will now begin the process of selecting a new Athletic Director.

Before coming to District 88, Daly served as a social science teacher and a Dean at Plainfield South High School.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education social science from Benedictine University and his master’s degree in educational administration from Governors State University.

“My goal is to maintain the stability of our leadership team to ensure we continue to provide our students with a high-quality educational environment,” Daly said. “I’m looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities that will come with this role. I’ve found a home here in District 88, and I’m excited to keep partnering and building relationships with our stakeholders.”

Daly lives in Plainfield with his wife, Amy, and their two children, Brooklyn and Ryan.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the Board’s decision to approve our recommendation to appoint Bob Daly in this position,” said District 88 Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton. “His experience, work ethic and commitment to the students of District 88 will help ensure we accomplish our mission of working for the continuous improvement of student achievement.”

District 88 Board recognizes WB Concert Choir for IMEC performance During its Jan. 22 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education recognized the success of the Willowbrook Concert Choir in being selected to perform at the Illinois Music Education Conference. The group was scheduled to sing on Jan. 27 at Scottish Rite Cathedral in Peoria.

During that conference, the choir planned to premiere a piece created in memory and honor of former District 88 Board of Education member Mark Johnson, who passed away in December 2014 after a battle with cancer.

Willowbrook commissioned William V. Malpede to compose the piece.

Johnson’s wife, Phyllis, attended that meeting and thanked the Board and administration for this honor. She acknowledged her husband’s passion for education, students and the community.

The piece is entitled “I thank You God for most this amazing” and is meant to recognize Johnson’s commitment to Willowbrook and District 88. The text is from the poem by E. E. Cummings, which was selected by Johnson’s wife and children.

Johnson joined the Board of Education in 1999, served as president from 2003 to 2011 and remained on the Board until he passed away.

His connection to District 88 began years earlier, however. Johnson was an alumnus of Willowbrook and received the school’s Distinguished

Willowbrook to present winter play, ‘Lend Me a Tenor’

Willowbrook Theatre invites audience members to enjoy a night of comedy when it presents the school’s winter play, “Lend Me a Tenor” by Ken Ludwig, on Feb. 8, 9 and 10.

Curtain time is 7 p.m. each evening.

Tickets are $7 for adults; $5 for students and children older than 12 years old (children 12 years old and younger, accompanied by an adult, are admitted free); $3 with an Activity Pass; and are free with a District 88 Senior Gold Card. Tickets will be on sale before the show (beginning at 6:15 p.m.) at the box office.

About the play Set in 1934 at the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, this farce follows several characters through a comedy of errors. The story begins with Henry Saunders (played by senior Jake Friguletto), the company’s general manager, preparing to welcome opera star Tito Merelli (senior John DeAngelo) for a one-night performance, along with Merelli’s wife, Maria (senior Genevieve Corkery).

When the world-famous tenor arrives late and then passes out after receiving an overdose of tranquilizers through a hilarious series of mishaps, Saunders has to think quickly to save the show. He turns to his assistant, Max (junior Joe LaPointe), and persuades him to take Merelli’s place on stage in costume as Otello.

Illinois is broke, but its leaders don’t act like it It can be tough to comprehend Illinois’ dismal finances.

The state has the worst credit rating in the nation and has been bottom of the barrel on that measure for quite some time. Illinois’ pension mess is one of the nation’s worst.

And the General Assembly hasn’t passed a truly balanced budget since 2001.

Why? The answer has a lot to do with government spending outpacing growth in the state’s economy.

But recently, Illinoisans witnessed a particular and pernicious part of that problem: basic lack of humility.

Illinois is broke. But leaders don’t act like it.

On Jan. 17, State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith unveiled a proposal to spend an additional $7.2 billion on education in one year.

Some context: Illinois’ student population is shrinking. Illinois’ state budget is already out of balance by more than $1 billion, even after state lawmakers passed a $5 billion tax hike. As of 2015, Illinois spent at least 20 percent more on education per pupil than every neighboring state.

And even when stripping out the richest school districts, Illinois spent more per student on average than every neighboring state.

Smith’s plan is absurd and irresponsible. But it elicited no real response from political leadership.

Now imagine if a state schools chief called for a freeze in education funding (which still would mean an increase in per-pupil spending, since the population is shrinking) and a reduction in Illinois school districts’ administrative costs, which are among the highest in the nation. One may disagree, but it’s a reasonable proposal given the dreadful state of Illinois finances.

Another problem is that when politicians and observers do get up in arms about poor spending habits, they often miss the bigger picture.

News broke Jan. 22 that Illinois paid $1 billion in late fees last year on its unpaid bills. “An astonishing $1 billion down the drain,” wrote one prominent editorial board.

“How often do you hear political candidates promise to spend more than $1 billion in return for—nothing? We can’t recall ever hearing that.”

Paying $1 billion in late fees is no doubt infuriating. There are plenty of better uses for taxpayer money. The bigger picture? Illinois owes more than $9 billion a year on interest on the pension debt alone. The state can’t even cover that interest payment, which is why the pension debt continues to grow each year.

Illinois’ pension math can’t work out barring major changes. Pulling Illinois out of that potential death spiral will require restructuring those obligations.

Care to float an amendment to the Illinois Constitution to allow for a reduction in the number of multimillion-dollar retirement payouts?

That’s heresy in Springfield.

Examples of this mentality abound.

Illinois state workers are the highest-paid in the nation after adjusting for cost of living. They receive Ca-

dillac health insurance plans when the state needs a Toyota budget. But the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees has held out for a new contract for more than two years, demanding a 37.5-hour workweek and raises of

up to 29 percent.

Want a more reasonable contract?

You’re anti-worker, according to government worker unions and their political beneficiaries.

Illinois’ financial problems are solvable. Residents should feel em-

powered to let their lawmakers know they can’t afford more tax hikes to make up for poor policy choices over the decades.

But the first step to solving a problem is being humble enough to admit the truth.

Food pantry volunteer frustrated with SNAP work-requirement waiver Every day she goes to work as volunteer director of a food pantry in downstate Murphysboro, Jane Williams meets individuals and families who Dan McCaleb need help putting Columnist, food on their Illinois News tables.

Network A retired co-owner of a commercial and residential HVAC business, Williams was asked to fill in at the pantry for a couple of weeks back in 2005.

“I’d never been in that position.

I didn’t even know there was a real need until I started doing that,” Williams said. “I thought I was going to volunteer for two weeks, but I got hooked.”

Williams now volunteers as many as 60 hours a week at the pantry in southwestern Illinois and raises money for it.

When she started, the pantry’s annual budget was about $20,000, plus what it received from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food assistance program.

“Now we take in about $200,000 annually, and we also get about 64 percent of all USDA commodities that come into [Jackson] County,” she said.

That enables the Murphysboro Food Pantry to remain open five days a week and provide more than 35,000 boxes of food each year to individuals and families from Jackson County, she said.

“I know our pantry provides a necessary and appreciated service to those in need in our community and I am happy we are able to help those single parents, veterans and seniors who have fallen on hard times,” she said.

The unpaid position with long hours is rewarding work for Williams, but there is one thing

about it that frustrates her: The number of young, healthy adults who take advantage of the system.

“What I am really not happy about,” she said, “is that while I’m willing to work literally both day and night to find funding to provide the needy with food, I take exception to providing food to ablebodied folks who just barely manage to get themselves out of bed and to our facility before we close at 11 a.m. each day.”

That’s why she said she was shocked and disappointed when she learned that the state of Illinois applied for and received a waiver from the USDA that otherwise requires able-bodied adults without dependents to work in order to participate in the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps.

Under the requirement, adults who are physically able and who don’t have children at home must either be working or participating in a job training program at least 20 hours per week (an average of 80 hours per month), or volunteering with a community service provider for a certain number of hours to receive food stamps.

The Illinois News Network reported earlier in January that the state requested a waiver from the work requirement for all of 2018.

That essentially means healthy adults without children can continue to receive food stamps without even trying to find a job or performing the volunteer work.

The Illinois Department of Human Services, which successfully requested the waiver, justified the decision in a statement to INN. “The individuals who qualify for [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] under this waiver are called Able Bodied Adults Without Dependents. However, we’ve found this name can be misleading,” a

statement from DHS said. “Research has shown that many of these individuals have significant barriers to gaining employment like mental illnesses, substance use disorders, justice involvement, and significant physical limitations.”

While that might be the case in some situations, Williams said she sees firsthand individuals who are both mentally and physically capable of working game the system, both at the pantry and through the federal food stamp program. For example, she said, she knows of individuals who trade their food stamps for items such as gasoline and rent, and then get food from the pantry.

“I would say that at least 50 percent of the SNAP benefits I see are being abused based on what I see,” she said. “The whole system is just so broken.”

Williams said she thinks the work requirement is common sense and actually benefits the SNAP recipient.

“If [you] had to get up and go to work or to a community service position every morning at 8 in order to qualify for these currently stateprovided services, they might decide it’s more beneficial just to get the job rather than stay on the welfare programs,” she said. “I don’t care if our community has to have them watering the flowers on Main Street or painting the picnic tables in the public park—just make them take some responsibility and learn that nothing should be free in life for those not willing to put in some effort.”

Following the work requirement model for SNAP, the Trump administration earlier this month decided to allow U.S. states to develop work-requirement programs for healthy, childless Medicaid recipients.

But what’s the point if federal agencies are going to so easily allow states to waive the requirements?

Red Cross winter blood shortage reaches critical level

More than 550 blood drives have been forced to cancel due to winter weather in January, causing over 16,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected through last week. In addition, bitter cold and widespread flu have contributed to very low turnout at many blood drives.

“Blood and platelet donations are currently being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in,” said Laura McGuire, external communications manager of the local Red Cross Blood Services Region.“Donors are critically needed to restock the shelves

for patients in their community as well as areas where donors are unable to give due to inclement weather.”

Every day, no matter the weather, the Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations to meet the needs of patients like Finnegan “Finn” Olson. Last January, Finn was born with a rare heart condition. He required multiple transfusions before, during and after heart transplant surgery last summer. Transfusions had an almost immediate effect on his personality and skin’s appearance.

“Each time Finn received a transfusion, you could see him pink up right away and have significantly more energy,” said his mother, Ali Olson. “We credit blood donation with making Finn stronger and helping keep him alive long enough to receive a new heart. Finn is living proof that blood helps save lives.”

Scorza leading the way for Addison Trail girls basketball team Blazers competitive in recent barrage of games

One key bright spot throughout the season for the Addison Trail girls basketball team has been the play of senior guard Nicci Scorza.

Through late last week, Blazers

coach Rob Schader noted Scorza is averaging around 12-13 points a game and eight to nine rebounds per contest.

“She is doing really well,” he said.

“She’s a leader on the court who has been playing great defense, rebounding and scoring for us. She’s been doing it all. She does a ton for us.”

In recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division action, the Blazers lost to Morton and Leyden.

“Against Morton we played tough until the middle of the third and then we kind of fell apart,” said Schader. “With Leyden, we lost by three, but were down by two late and had a

chance to tie and hit one of two free throws and then had to foul.”

In addition to Scorza, Schader cited strong recent play from Serena Gilliam (5-10, junior post), Joanna Garay (5-3 junior guard), Brenda Berumen (5-6 junior guard), Angelina Carreras (5-1 junior guard), Karime Martinez (5-9 junior guard) and Vincenza Zaccaro (5-7 senior guard).

“Serena has been doing well for us,” he said. “She’s averaging seven or eight points and gets us a bunch of rebounds. Karime Martinez is a junior wing who is getting a lot more confident out there. We’re playing a lot of

juniors.”

Over the holidays the Blazers went 2-2 at the Lisle tournament. Addison Trail then lost to West Chicago and Proviso East and defeated Streamwood, while losing to Hoffman Estates after that.

“Streamwood was probably our best game we’ve played,” said Schader.

After Hoffman Estates, the Blazers lost to Hinsdale South in conference play. “We were right there with Hinsdale South,” said Schader. “We were down by one with four minutes left and then we fell apart and lost by 10

or 12. In that Leyden game we were up 12-2 to start the game and played a great half. We missed some easy shots and missed 16 free throws. We’re turning the ball over too much right now. We lost to Leyden by three and missed 16 free throws.”

The Blazers faced Leyden again earlier this week and will host Downers Grove South Friday for senior night at Addison Trail.

“We’re 7-13 right now and there probably are four games that we could have had,” said Schader. “You add that up and we could be 11-9. The girls are all playing hard and competing hard.”

Willowbrook girls basketball Warriors defeat Glenbard South; JV2 team second at York team completes busy week

It’s been a busy two weeks for the Willowbrook girls gymnastics team.

The Warriors recently had four meets inside that two-week stretch.

After that run the Warriors were 4-5 overall in duals and 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action. The JV team was 5-3 overall and 4-1 in WSC Gold meets.

In a recent dual meet against Glenbard South, Willowbrook was a 115.6-110.25 winner. The JV1 team won 97.2 to 81.5, while the JV2 team lost to Glenbard South.

In the annual District 88 meeting with Addison Trail, the Warriors lost 122.25 to 118.75 at the varsity level, won 100.1 to 99.4 at the JV1 level and lost at the JV2 level.

In a conference meet against Downers Grove South, Willowbrook lost 133.0 to 124.15 at the varsity level and 110.3 to 103.6 at the JV1 level. The JV2 team won 58.3 to 58.1.

At the JV2 invite at York, Willowbrook was second as a team.

Dominique Crowe won the vault, while Damaries Garcia was second.

Crowe took second on bars, while Karen Cruz was third and Heidi Helsper was fifth.

On floor, Katie Morris was third and Emily Gusel was fifth. Helsper was second in the all-around.

“The team is hitting its stride at the right time,” said Willowbrook coach Deanna Zuchowski. “Since winter break, the girls have started to make more of their routines and add in elements of difficulty to improve their scores. Overall, the girls are ready for conference and the state series.”

Zuchowski has seen upward movement in the confidence department. “Their confidence during competition has pulled them through some tough meets,” she said. “They have kept their head up and pushed forward.”

The coach noted beam has been an event where success has been quite rewarding. “Beam has given the team the most trouble, but it also has been its greatest comeback,” Zuchowski said. “They are starting at more difficulty than the beginning of the season, which is right where I want them to be at this time. They still can improve on beam with fixing the balance checks and connecting their tricks.”

Karli Wilson and Damaries Garcia have provided sparks of late for the Warriors. “Karli is really taking on the role of team leader,” said Zuchowski. “Damaries has been assisting the team with camaraderie.

Being a senior, she is trying to instill the idea of hard work and dedication to the sport.”

Willowbrook recently competed in the WSC Gold meet at Leyden and performed in the Glenbard East regional this past Monday.

“I am very impressed with how far we have come this season,” said Zuchowski. “The girls have had a lot of obstacles to overcome this year with injuries, the flu and other circumstances out of all of our control. They have pushed each other and are ready to accomplish their best scores.”

The Willowbrook girls basketball team had a busy recent stretch with three West Suburban Conference Gold Division games.

In a 62-38 loss to Morton, the Warriors trailed 20-9 after the first quarter and 32-16 at halftime.

K’Aliyha Herron led Willowbrook with 11 points and also had nine rebounds. CeCe Lizasuain added eight points and also had eight rebounds.

Emma Barrington had seven points and Katelyn McCann had six points.

Jayla Smith had three assists and

two steals. McCann and Smith each pulled in five rebounds, while Maureen Schmid had eight rebounds in nine minutes of action.

In a 54-52 loss to Leyden in a game that featured eight lead changes and four ties, the Warriors led 1411 after the first quarter and trailed 27-23 at halftime. Leyden outscored Willowbrook 17-8 in the third quarter, but Willowbrook came back and outscored Leyden 21-10 in the fourth quarter.

McCann led the Warriors with 17 points. Schmid had seven points, while Sydney Verdino and Herron each tallied seven points. Verdino and Schmid each had nine rebounds, while Herron had seven rebounds.

Smith and McCann each had three assists, while McCann and Herron each had six steals and Barrington had four steals. Willowbrook scored 26 points off 20 Leyden turnovers

and scored 38 of its points in the paint.

The Warriors also dropped a 6828 game to Proviso East. Proviso led 18-7 after the first quarter and 35-14 at halftime.

Herron led Willowbrook with 11 points. Verdino had seven points, while Lizasuain had six points. Lizasuain had seven rebounds and Smith had three steals.

Helsper took sixth in the tournament with a 1,209 series, which included a high game of 245. Katie Pettinger had an 1,138 series with a 211 series.

She finished 15th individually.

Willowbrook also won the 11team Leyden 6X6 invitational at the varsity level. Pettinger won the indi-

vidual title with a high game of 239 and a six-game series of 1,231. Senior Elizabeth Soriano had an 1,177 series and a high game of 227, which earned her a third-place finish. “Elizabeth had a standout performance,” said Allen.

The Warriors also won the JV title at Leyden. Junior Paula Williams had a 1,066 series with a 209 high game.

Junior Sabrina Edwards had a 994 series and a high game of 197.

At Leyden, Willowbrook took the program-champion award, which adds together the varsity and JV scores.

The Fenton wrestling team recently defeated Illiana Christian and Ridgewood to clinch its ninth Metro Suburban Conference title in the last 11 years.

The two wins moved Fenton to 19-4 overall. The Bizon celebrated the contributions of its senior wrestlers who were recognized at the meet for their contributions to the program over their careers.

Seniors recognized included Brandon Koskiewicz, Jose Lopez, Miguel Gonzalez, Danny Sotelo, Carlos Mercado, Anthony Park, Dylan Butts, Jack Butts, Mateo Valadez, Alex Tre-

vino and Isaiah Brock.

In other recent action, Fenton also won the Metro Suburban Conference tournament in dominating fashion with 246 points. Riverside-Brookfield was a distant second with 180 points.

All 14 Bison wrestlers finished in the top five of their weight classes.

Fenton wrestled the tournament without key contributor Jeremy Piskorz.

“We received major contributions from all 14 participants and the tournament was highlighted by a lot of

tough wrestling,” said Hastings.

Fenton recently wrapped up the regular season with duals against De La Salle, Bremen, Elmwood Park and Guerin Prep.

“We look to finish the regular season on a strong note and begin peaking for the postseason,” Hastings said recently.

Fenton boys bowling The Fenton boys bowling team recently finished sixth at the Lake Park boys bowling regional. The Bison finished with a pin count of 5,098 for six games and had high team games of 915 and 903.

Junior Arthur Kawalkowski took 24th individually with a score of

1,127 for six games. He had high games of 204, 201 and 200. His score earned him a spot in the Chicago Taft sectional where he finished with a 1,005 series and a high game of 167.

Freshman Henry Valenzuela was 30th with a score of 1,107. He had high games of 233, 206 and 181.

Junior Juan Arteaga was 47th with a score of 869. He had high games of 219 and 192. Sophomore Joey Potkay was 55th with a score of 731. He had a high game of 173. Freshman Matt Sipes had a high game of 187, while junior Liam McCauley had high games of 168 and 172. Sophomore James Palumbo had a high game of 183.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team defeats Fenton Knights competitive in back-and-forth contest against R-B

By Mike Miazga The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team split a pair of recent Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division games.

In a 56-33 win over Fenton, the Knights led 16-8 after the first quarter and 24-13 at halftime. A 24-7 run in the third quarter put the game out of reach.

Alex Meurer led the Knights with 22 points (one 3-pointer). Khali

Saunders added eight points, while Kevin Cheng had seven points. Nico Gaudio had six points. Cheng also hit a 3-pointers and finished with eight assists.

IC Catholic Prep then lost a tough 47-44 MSC Blue game to Riverside-Brookfield when an R-B player banked in a half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“It was a really good game,” said Knights coach TJ Tyrrell. “We needed the win to stay in the hunt for the

conference title. R-B was 6-1 coming in and we were 4-3 and R-B’s only loss was to us at their place. We were very focused coming into this game.

The kids were ready for the moment.

It was a battle.”

Tyrrell noted his squad started off slow against R-B. “We struggled in the first half,” he said. “We had sloppy ball control and some poor turnovers. We were down four at half but regrouped after that and got everything together. There were eight lead

changes in the second half. It was back and forth.”

Cheng tied the contest with his 3-pointer with a minute left in regulation. R-B went back up by two points after hitting a pair of free throws. IC Catholic Prep called timeout with 15 seconds left. The ensuing play saw Meurer hit a shot to again tie the game.

“Alex drove to the rim on an extremely smart play with 1.6 seconds left and tied the game,” said Tyrrrell.

“They inbounded the ball and their guy double pumped and hit a bankshot from half court at the buzzer to win it. It was a tough game to lose.

But this was the atmosphere I was looking for. There was a sense of pride for us in the locker room afterward. The kids never gave up. This team has a high ceiling that they have not reached yet.”

Cheng finished with 16 points and five rebounds. “We also had real good energy off the bench from Pat Shannon who came in and did a nice job defensively and hit a big backdoor bucket on an out-of-bounds play that got the crowd energized,” Tyrrell said.

Tyrrell noted the bigger focus now is on finishing strong the rest of the way. The Knights were 14-7 overall and 4-4 in MSC Blue play after the R-B loss.

Allen noted the Leyden tournament was the team’s best effort thus far. The Warriors averaged a 187 for the tournament.

Allen added improvement is being seen on spare shooting, especially at the 10 and 7 pins. “We have worked hard on those spares throughout practice,” he noted.

Working with lane conditions continues to be another point of emphasis. “We still need to work on making adjustments to the lane condition,” said Allen.

“When the lanes are different than we are used to, we need to be able to make adjustments faster so we are not wasting the first game by trying

to get lined up.”

Allen cited recent outstanding efforts form the likes of Pettinger, Soriano and Jones. “They really have stepped up on this team recently,” he said. “They have scored extremely well, which has helped lead our team to important conference, and invite places and wins. We are expecting those three girls to continue working hard in practice and being successful in matches and invites.”

Willowbrook recently competed against Fenton and Downers Grove South. “We have had a great season so far, but we have important matches and invites ahead of us,” said Allen. “The next few weeks will be important for us to make sure we are prepared for the regional.”
