Gunshots fired on North Ave. leads to one arrest Two injured people expected to recover

VILLA PARK — According to a release issued by Detective Sgt. Bill Lyons of the Villa Park Police Department on Wednesday, Nov. 25, Villa Park officers were dispatched to the 900 block of west North Avenue for a report of gunshots on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at about 9:10 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found two males suffering from gunshot wounds near the rear parking area of the townhouse complex. Both male victims were removed from the scene for medical treatment. The victims, ages 21 and 19, sustained nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

Later, prosecutors stated that one victim had been shot once in the leg and the other had been shot twice in the leg and once in the abdomen. Both victims are expected to recover.

A juvenile suspect was identified and located near the scene of the shooting and taken to

volunteer puppy raisers. “I am so thankful for the work our puppy raisers do,” said Puppy Program Manager Suzanne Sliclen. “They dedicate a lot of time out of their day to accommodate the needs and expectations of our puppies and it is all in the hope that the puppy will go on to change someone else’s life.” Catherine Rupp, who lives in Elmhurst, is currently raising her fourth puppy for Canine Companions. Vol-

unteer puppy raisers provide basic obedience, socialization and love for approximately 16 months. The pups then return to the organization for training to master the commands necessary to enhance the life of someone with a disability.

Gerhard Bender has returned to working around the house and yard following a coflex Interlaminar Stabilization procedure at Elmhurst Hospital to treat his back pain. “Soon after the surgery, I felt no pain,” he said. “Then for a couple of months after the surgery I had to be careful about lifting, bending and twisting, but now I’m out there mowing grass.”

Hospital’s new coflex procedure helps some back pain patients ELMHURST — In 2012, 76-year-old Gerhard Bender picked up an item from his garage floor and felt a nasty twinge in his lower back.

What followed was a threeyear search for relief from increasingly severe bouts of pain. He tried chiropractic treatments and a series of epidural steroid injections, but any break from the misery was temporary.

By fall of 2013 Bender, a normally independent person, was limping and using a cane.

But now the pain extended down his leg when he walked.

“My wife Irene had to deal with a lot during that time,” recalled Bender. “I wasn’t too pleasant to be around.”

Phone calls demand money or else ‘legal action’

On November 17, the person received a phone call, asking him to pay a lien he had with the U.S. Treasury Department, but the resident knew he had no liens. He was given a phone number and a threat -- “If we don’t hear from you legal action will be taken.”

Addison Nov. 24 • Tony Baque, 57, of Addison, was arrested near Villa and Lake at around 4:23 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic accident, police said Baque was charged with aggravated DUI, aggravated driving while license revoked, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, obstructed windshield, no insurance and making an improper turn.

• Rhonda A. Rogers, 39, of Addison, was arrested in the 200 block of N. Kennedy Drive at around 2:33 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct.

Police said Rogers knowingly permitted a minor to commit an act to disturb the peace.

• Antonlino Villarreal, 49, of Addison, was arrested in the 100 block of Michael Lane at around 4:45 p.m. Police said Villarreal had a warrant out of the Kane County Sheriff’s Department.

Nov. 22 • Jim A. Demilio, 50, of Addison, was arrested in the 500 block of W. Lake St. at around 1:53 a.m. and charged with DUI and battery to a police officer. Police said officers responded to a local restaurant to assist an irate customer who was requesting a tow. Once there, Demilio was found to be DUI and struck a police officer’s arm with his elbow.

• Yovani Simental, 22, of Addison, was arrested in the 200 block of Park View Drive at around 8:30 p.m. Police said Simental had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department and a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department.

Nov. 21 • Krystina M. Caputo, 19, of Addison, was arrested near Rohlwing and Lake

at around 12:08 a.m. and charged with DUI, unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor and improper lane usage.

• Jessica Silva, 27, of Addison, was arrested at a store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 11:38 p.m. and charged with retail theft. Police said Silva also was in possession of a grinder and had two failure-to-appear warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department. She was charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

• A 23-year-old man from Chicago was arrested in the 400 block of Green Oak Court at around 2:22 p.m. and charged with domestic battery.

Nov. 20 Abimael D. Joachin-Duran, 20, of Chicago, was arrested in the 500 block of Valerie Lane at around 4:14 p.m. and charged with criminal trespass to land. Police said Joachin-Duran entered upon property without permission. Earlier in the morning, at around 8:41 a.m.

Joachin-Duran had been arrested near Fullerton and Park and charged with criminal sexual abuse, no valid driver’s license and no insurance. Police said an officer approached a suspicious vehicle where Joachin-Duran was charged.

Villa Park Nov. 21 • Ankit Y. Patel, 28, of Schaumburg; Ushaben M. Patel, 49, of Villa Park; and Kacee Uysaloglu, 26, of Villa Park, were arrested in three separate incidences. Each was charged with unlawful sale of tobacco. Ankit Y. Patel was arrested in the 600 block of N. Addison at around 12:47 p.m., Ushaben M. Patel was arrested in the 300 block of N. Ardmore at around 1:51 p.m., and Uysaloglu was arrested in the 1-100 block of E. St. Charles at around 12:45 p.m.

• A vehicle was reported stolen in the 300 block of E. North Ave. at around 6:22 a.m. Police said an unknown suspect stole the vehicle while it was left unattended at the gas pumps of a local gas station.

Nov. 20 • John Q. Jackson, 33, of Glendale

Heights, was arrested in the 300 block of W. North Ave. at around 4:16 a.m. and charged with two counts of aggravated DUI. He also was charged with aggravated driving while license revoked.

• Juan M. Ramierz, 22, of Lombard, was arrested in the 500 block of N. Ardmore at around 3:47 p.m. and charged with two counts of DUI, driving while license suspended, no insurance and no seat belt.

• Taylor J. Trevino, 23, of Chicago, was arrested in the 500 block of E. St. Charles at around 10:14 p.m. and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Justin W. Wolter, 22, of Glen Ellyn, was arrested at a local store at around 4:14 p.m. Sept. 18 and charged with retail theft. The original complaint and arrest warrant was issued Nov. 20.

• A female juvenile from Villa Park was arrested in the 100 block of W. Madison at around 2:54 p.m. and charged with domestic battery.

Nov. 19 • Jennifer E. Abbott-Bell, 39, of Shorewood, was arrested at a local store at around 5:49 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

• Nicholas J. Zarcone, 32, of Naperville, was arrested at around 2:13 a.m. at the Villa Park Police Department and charged with criminal damage to government-supported property.

Nov. 17 • Thomas L. Vaughn, 35, of Morris, was arrested in the 200 block of E. Roosevelt Road at around 12:17 a.m. and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Marlyn Astudillo, 21, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 900 block of W. North Ave. at around 8:36 p.m. April 24 and charged with battery. The original complaint and arrest warrant was issued Nov. 17.

• Two incidents of burglary to a motor vehicle were reported in the 200 block of S. Villa. The first incident took place at around 10:40 p.m. where police said an unknown suspect stole a backpack from a secured unoccupied vehicle

parked in a parking lot. A window was smashed to gain entry. The second incident occurred between 10:30 and 10:40 p.m., where police said an unknown suspect stole a purse from a secured unoccupied vehicle parked in a parking lot. The front passenger side window was smashed to gain entry.

Nov. 16 Vincent C. Monaco, 39, of Roselle, was arrested near St. Charles and Ardmore at around 12:25 a.m. and charged with DUI and illegal lane usage.

Nov. 15-Nov. 16 Theft was reported in the 400 block of N. Beverly. A resident told police that an unknown suspect stole a LINK card between Nov. 15 and 1 p.m. Nov. 16.

Nov. 15 • Angel Merlos-Villegas, 29, of Bensenville, was arrested at a local store at around 4:10 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

• David V. Ventura, 31, of Lombard, was arrested near St. Charles and Ardmore at around 11:58 p.m. and charged with unlawful possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of cannabis, illegal lane usage and one headlight.

• Indecent exposure was reported in the 700 block W. North at around 6:26 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect, described as a Hispanic male driving a green van, exposed himself to a female walking in a parking lot.

• Theft was reported at a local store at around 2:04 p.m. Police said an unknown male suspect removed three HD wireless speakers from the shelf and left without paying for the items.

Nov. 12 Two male juveniles from Villa Park were arrested at a local high school at around 11:40 a.m. Both were charged with disorderly conduct.

Oct. 28 Retail theft was reported at a local store at around 7:09 p.m. Police said an unknown male and female suspect removed items from the store shelves and left without paying for the items.

Hospital volunteer still gets a move on at 93 Has delivered newspapers to patients for almost 60 years ELMHURST — In 1957, Miriam Handke signed up to volunteer at Elmhurst Hospital at the urging of a friend.

The friend thought the opportunity would help her work through the loss of her husband, who passed away a year earlier, leaving her a widow with an 8-year-old son.

Now, 58 years later, Handke’s volunteer shift has become a way for her to help others who may need a dose of cheer or a comforting word.

Now at age 93, she is still doing the same job she started with — delivering newspapers. When she started, she would offer papers for sale to patients and staff. Now she delivers stacks of papers to each department in the hospital. She’s there every Thursday morning, rain or shine, according to Dee Panek, the hospital’s volunteer coordinator.

“Miriam is an inspiration and a role model for living a healthy-driven lifestyle. She is well rounded in all aspects of her life — spiritually, mentally and physically,” Panek said.

When asked for her secret to a long, healthy life, Handke said simply, “Well, I keep going. There’s always something.”

Walking has been the best exercise through the years, she said. She walks two miles through Elmhurst Hospital once a week, and plans to increase that mileage by walking the hospital on days she’s not volunteering.

“I walk the halls in my apartment building,” she said. “I’m doing something all the time.”

Her current regimen mirrors her younger self. She never started a formal exercise program, but was always moving — roller skating, swimming, biking, playing tennis, bowling.

Another key to Handke’s longevity: healthy eating. Although a diabetic, Handke doesn’t load up on processed food or sugar. She keeps portions small and balances treats with healthy options.

at home and freezes them for herself.

“I don’t eat a lot of desserts — though I love them,” she said.

Volunteering at the hospital has provided a mental health benefit, too.

In her purse, Handke still carries a 7-year-old thank you note she received from a patient. The card is tucked into a plastic sleeve to keep it from tearing.

The patient spoke briefly with her years ago when Handke offered to sell her a newspaper. The woman didn’t want a paper, but the conversation had an effect on her. It affected Handke, too.

“You never know if there’s something you say or something you do that touches a life,” she said.

The weekly tasks and her interactions at the hospital have helped her carry on through life’s ups and downs.

“It hasn’t been a completely smooth, no-problems life. But you have to say, ‘Okay, I’m going to go on and I’m not going to dwell in the past,’” she said. “I just keep going.”

Addison Trail boys basketball team wins Elmwood Park tournament Grygo, Conrad earn alltournament honors

It was a successful title defense for the Addison Trail boys basketball team.

The Blazers kicked off the season by going 3-0 and winning the Elmwood Park tournament for the second year in a row.

Addison Trail started the tournament with a 64-14 win over Chicago Little Village.

“We got up big from the getgo,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons. “It was good for an opening game. Everybody played a lot and guys got some good reps against live competition.”

Addison Trail led 37-4 at

halftime thanks to a 29-0 run at one point.

The Blazers then recorded a 65-25 victory over Chicago Northtown Academy. “It was similar to the first game. We got up big and we played hard to the end,” said Lyons. “The guys off the bench gave us some really good energy.”

Addison Trail wrapped things up with a 63-41 win over host Elmwood Park. “We were down 10-3 at the start of the game,” Lyons noted. “That was good for us. We had some good looks on offense, but we couldn’t convert. The good thing is our guys didn’t bat an eye.”

games. We saw a lot of positives on both ends of the floor that we can build on. We also saw some things that we know we definitely can get better at.

I thought our depth was great.

We had guys rotating into the games who gave us good energy and good minutes.”

Addison Trail used its size as an advantage in the three games. “We had a lot more size than our opponents,” said Lyons. “From a half-court sense, we had a lot of offensive rebounds. We had something like 15 offensive rebounds against Elmwood Park. That gave us a lot of second-chance points in the half court and then we used a full-court press to help jump-start the offense.”

Lyons said that pressure defense came into play in the win against Little Village. “We went to a full-court man-toman press and that forced them to play fast and that led to some

The Addison Trail girls basketball team opened the season by taking third in its own tournament it co-hosts with Fenton.

The Blazers went 2-2 in the tournament, starting off with a 42-32 loss to Lane Tech.

Addison Trail then downed Fenton 52-24 and scored a 63-30 win over Elgin. The Blazers lost to West Suburban Conference Gold Division foe Leyden 48-42 in their final game.

Maria Koulogeorgas and Alyssa Pham were named to the all-tournament team.

“For the most part we did a nice job offensively in the tournament,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Schader. “The question mark for us right now is on the defensive end. We got hurt on the boards in the tournament. Lane Tech out-rebounded us 38-27 and Leyden had 27 offensive rebounds in the game and yet we only lost by six points. The defensive end of the floor is not where it needs to be right now.

Once we figure that out we can be pretty successful this year.”

Schader was pleased with the depth the team showed in the tournament. “We had six and seven kids scoring in most of the

games,” he said. “Again, this is one of the bigger teams we’ve had and right now we’re not putting bodies on people and grabbing rebounds like we should be.”

Schader also lauded the play of Nicole Pudlo and Diamond Pikulyk. “Nicole Pudlo played very well and Diamond had a good game against Leyden with 13 points,” he said.

Koulogeorgas had 20 points against Elgin, including 18 in the first half. “We shot the ball fairly well in the tournament,” said Schader. “We were tied 21-21 in the first half against Lane Tech and had six 3-pointers. The problem was we couldn’t get the ball inside. If we can get the rebounding down we are going to be fine. We started to get better defensively in other aspects.”

Pham is another player who enjoyed a strong tournament. “Alyssa played really well,” said Schader. “She ran the point for the most part and took care of the ball. She scored and dished and did a lot of positive things for us.”

Addison Trail returned to action earlier in the week against WSC Gold opponent Morton. The Blazers continue conference play Saturday at Hinsdale South.

“We have some tough games right off the bat,” said Schader. “Our next three games are on the road against Morton, Hinsdale South and Illiana Christian. It’s going to be a challenging couple weeks for us. We’ll see where we are.”

He does exactly what we need him to do. Both Eric and Nick are senior captains and both were deserving of the award.”

Lyons also cited strong play from Zach Novak and Colton Noel. “We were able to get a lot of second-chance points inside,” said Lyons.

Lyons said the team is working hard to build on the momentum from the tournament win.

“I told the guys we won three games, we won a tournament championships, a lot of guys got playing time and we came out of it healthy,” he said. “We talked about having high expectations. It was a nice start. It was nice for the guys to see that success and see we have the potential to get to where we want to be and where we need to be. I told them to enjoy it and then let’s focus on the next game.”

That next game is Saturday at home at 6 p.m. against District 88 neighbor Willowbrook.

“They beat us twice last year in two highly contested games that had great atmospheres,” said Lyons. “It was two competitive teams last year and I expect the same thing this year.

We are expecting a battle (Saturday).”

Fenton girls basketball team slowed by injuries Susmarski, Gomez play well in season-opening tournament

There was some good news and bad news for the Fenton girls basketball team.

The bad news is the Bison lost a pair of starters during their opening Addison Trail-Fenton tournament.

The good news is veteran coach Tim Anderson saw some building blocks during the team’s four games in the tournament—losses to Elgin, Addison Trail, Leyden and Lane Tech.

Fenton starters Jessica Bango (senior) and Jamie Minard (sophomore) both were injured in the tournament. Bango was injured very early in the team’s first game against Elgin.

“Jessica got hurt three possessions in,” said Anderson.

“That’s a huge loss for us. She’s our leader and our go-to player.”

Anderson didn’t know how long Bango would be out of action. “We’re waiting to hear,” he said late last week.

The injuries left Anderson

with an extremely youthful roster during the tournament.

“Coming into the season we had about 71/2 years of varsity experience on the team,” he said.

“With those two girls out, there were many moments in that first game where there was not one minute of varsity experience on the floor for us.”

However, Anderson sees plenty of positives with his group.

“There is light at the end of the tunnel,” he said. “This group has a lot of improvement potential. I see some huge upside. They are wonderful kids. It wasn’t easy for them in the tournament. It was a big eye-opener for them playing at the varsity level. But they have shown me nothing but being ready for the challenge.

I can’t ask for anything more than that. They work hard and they work well together. They get along with each other. Those kinds of things are important.

You have to have those intangibles on a team. We realize we have a lot of work to do. There is a focus on what we need to do and they know what. That’s what makes the game so much fun. We’re looking forward to

Addison Trail wrestling team off to a strong start

The Addison Trail wrestling team got the 2015-2016 season started off on the right foot.

The Blazers scored a pair of recent victories over Highland Park (63-15) and Palatine (5721).

“They are young and they are willing to listen and learn,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Serio.

“They are willing to work hard and that’s half the battle. Kids who are willing to wrestle and learn are fine by me. I will coach them all day long.”

Senior captain Karim Fuentes (heavyweight) started the

season 3-0 with three pinfall victories. “Karim is looking very good so far,” said Serio.

“He will be tough to beat this year. He put in a lot of time in the off-season in the weight room. We expect good things from Karim this season. In my eyes he could be a state placewinner and could be a state champion. He’s a mentally strong kid. We’re excited for him.”

Junior Andre Frontier (145 pounds), also a team captain, started out with three wins as well. “Andre has been around and knows the varsity program,” said Serio.

Tyrrell cited strong tournament play from Burrows from the outside, Lyles in the post, as well as Reed, Angel Ramirez, Jack Ricobene and Gaudio among many contributors.

“Troy shot the ball extremely well,” said Tyrrell. “He shot above 60 percent from the 3-point line. Will gave us solid play down low and Austin had a big scoring game for us.

Angel Ramirez has been a real leader on and off the court and Jack Ricobene has stepped up and took advantage of opportunities. Tony is a big guy who defensively knows where to be.

He’s a smart guy and has a high basketball IQ.” Tyrrell also was impressed with the overall team play in the tournament. “We had several different contributors,” he said. “We had 20 team assists in the last game and 15 the game before. The kids are moving the ball around. We had good team play.”

Overall, Tyrrell was pleased with what he saw. “The first two games our defense was outstanding,” he said. “The day after Thanksgiving we came out a little sluggish but were able to pull it out against Coal City. Our defense will help us.

Typically when we get in passing lanes and even get deflections that leads to transition and we’re hard to guard in the open floor.”

The Knights have upcoming games with St. Patrick and Riverside-Brookfield. “We have some tough games coming up,” said Tyrrell, who noted conference foe Riverside-Brookfield is among the top ranked teams in the Chicagoland area. “This was a strong positive start for us. We’re going to continue to work on things, particularly mental toughness which we stressed going into the year.

We’re developing leaders.

We’re starting to see leaders emerge here, which is extremely promising.”

Anderson also was pleased with the play of junior post player Giselle Gomez. “She was our second-leading scorer and she led us in free-throw attempts,” he said. “I was impressed with her. We talk to our post players that every time you get the basketball you should be thinking about scoring three points. That’s going to the basket hard and getting fouled. Right now we’re having a little trouble putting the ball in the basket. We’re working on that and Giselle is doing a very good job of getting there.”

Anderson noted the team now moves into another challenging part of its schedule with Metro Suburban Conference West Division games against St. Edward, Glenbard South, Riverside-Brookfield and Wheaton Academy.

“We’re stepping into a tough stretch here,” he said. “From all indications I don’t see our conference being any less challenging than last year. We know we’ll have our work cut out for us.”
