The deadline for candidates seeking to get on the ballot in Villa Park for the April 4, 2017 election was Monday Dec. 19. With three Trustee seats as well as the Village President position to be decided, the choice of current Village President Deborah Bullwinkel to not seek reelection was the big surprise.

Three candidates have filed to run for the four-year Village President’s term.

Current Trustees Al Bulthuis and Robert ‘Bob’ Taglia will be on the ballot for Village President as will resident Charles Pickerill. Bulthuis was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 2007. He won again in 2011 and 2013. Bulthuis’ current Trustee term won’t expire until 2019, so if his bid for the Village Presidency fails he will still serve on the Board. Taglia has been a Trustee since 2009. His term is set to expire in 2017, so if he fails to gain the Village Presidency Taglia will be off the dais. Pickerill is a well-known business owner and long-time resident of Villa Park.

Four candidates have entered their names for the three expiring Trustee seats (out of six total). Incumbent Nick Cuzzone won election in 2015 to fill the remaining two years in Trustee John Davis’ term after Davis stepped down due to health reasons. Incumbent Robert Wagner first won a seat on the Board in 2013 and is seeking a second term. Residents Cheryl Tucker and David Cilella will also be on the ballot for Village Trustee.

Village Clerk Hosannah Korynecky’s term is also expiring.

Korynecky was the only person to file for the ballot, guaranteeing her of a third term as she will run unopposed.

Four candidates will be running for the four expiring seats on the Library Board of Trustees, assuring a seat for each. Current Library Board President Adelaide ‘Pat’ Hubbard and fellow incumbent Dianne Luebker will join residents Steve DeLaRosa and Wanda Koeller on the Library Board.

DuPage County Sheriff’s Office seeks public’s assistance in identifying armed robbery suspect On Dec. 26 at approximately 9:10 a.m. a male black suspect entered the Walgreens located at Route 83 and 91st Street in unincorporated Willowbrook where he committed an armed robbery.

The suspect entered the Walgreens and proceeded to the pharmacy where he handed an employee a note demanding various narcotics and money.

During the robbery, a patron approached the pharmacy unaware of the robbery in progress. The suspect produced a handgun and robbed the customer of his wallet. After receiving the narcotics from the pharmacy employee, the

suspect fled the store and entered a maroon color four-door vehicle and fled the scene traveling westbound on 91st Street toward Clarendon Hills Road.

The suspect is described as being a male black, approximately 5-10, thin build, wearing a dark, hooded jacket with the brand “AERO” printed in white letters across the chest, and a light blue bandana covering his face. Please see attached surveillance photographs of the suspect.

The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra Musicians in Performance at Mayslake series continues its season with Concerto Mania-Vivaldi and Bach at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook. Sanders, in the Chicago area to promote his book, “Our Revolution,” was greeted by over 3,000 enthusiasts who gave him a standing ovation. The event at North Central was the largest in the country for his scheduled book tour.

Though he fell short of getting the nomination, Sanders has gained an almost cult following across the nation, and saluted those who stood by him throughout the campaign.

“Thank you Illinois so much for the support you gave me during the campaign,” he said. “We began our campaign with no organization, no money, no name recognition. ‘He’s a nice guy, but he’s a fringe candidate.’

We got 46 percent of the delegates.

The American people are tired and frustrated with establishment economics, establishment politics and establishment media.”

In his book, Sanders shares his experiences on the campaign trail, and outlines an economic, environmental, racial and social justice agenda for creating jobs, raising wages, protecting the environment and providing health care for all.

But as you might expect, the presidential election was on everybody’s mind. Sanders conceded that Trump won, but insisted he doesn’t have a mandate because he lost the popular vote. This election marks the fifth time in U.S. history that a candidate has won the White House despite losing the popular vote.

“Second point, if you go down and look at the major issues facing this country, on almost every one of the major issues, the Republicans represent a significant minority of the American people,” he added.

Saying that democracy “is not a spectator sport,” Sanders urged his supporters and those who aren’t happy with the outcome of this election “to get involved yourselves.”

Sanders acknowledged that Trump “understood and spoke about the pain and despair that tens of millions of Americans are feeling now,” and tapped into it.

“He talked about the fact that median household income is $1,400 less today than it was in 1999,” Sanders said. “All over this country people are working two or three jobs for healthcare that they need to take care of their families. They’re struggling and nobody is paying attention to them. We know who these people are.

To the editor: One statistic about the 2016 election stood out to me: only about 50 percent of eligible voters between the ages of 18 and 29 cast ballots in this election while the overall voter turnout rate was a mere 58 percent.

We owe it to our youth to do better for them and to ensure that when they have the opportunity to have their voice heard- whether at a local board meeting or at the ballot boxthey have the tools and knowledge to do so. That is why I introduced and passed a new law to put civics education back in the classroom, starting with this year’s high school freshman class. Until now, Illinois was one of only five states that did not have civics as a part of the high school curriculum. We have to give our kids the tools they need to become future leaders.

Civics education is just as important as any other class our students take in school because it is the linchpin that connects fields of study to real world policies. Just like how math, science and reading skills are critical, civics education teaches students how to apply their diverse skills to improve the world around us. Our kids are more connected to the world around them than any previous generation and civics will help them apply their knowledge to make the changes they want to see in the world.

As parents, we make decisions every day that affect our children’s futures, but civics education will give them the tools to make their own decisions for their futures.

Dec. 18 Christian Betancourt-Miranda, 26, of Addison, was arrested at a restaurant in the 300 block of W. Lake St. at around 1:25 a.m. and charged with criminal damage to property. Police said Betancourt-Miranda was escorted out of the restaurant, became argumentative and kicked the front door, breaking the glass.

District 88’s Best: Addison Trail senior Jonathan Loi

Senior will have 17 advanced placement courses completed upon graduation

Jonathan Loi has been named as Addison Trail’s December recipient of 88’s Best recognition for his academic accomplishments. Loi, a senior, was recognized during the Dec. 19 District 88 Board of Education meeting. When Loi graduates, he will have taken 17 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and 11 Honors courses), and he has received a grade of A in all of them to date. He is a Semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program, a National AP Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction.

“Loi makes a huge contribution to the class,” said Laura Jurik, Addison Trail English teacher. “He reads Shakespeare fluently and is always there with a good question or comment. Other students line up to work with him because he is so bright and helpful. He’s a top student academically, and he continues to challenge himself with tougher reading, vocabulary and writing.”

Addison Trail science teacher and Science Olympiad co-sponsor Kira Bonk agreed.

“Loi has been a strong leader for Science Olympiad this year and is very determined to make it to State,” Bonk said. “He has been encouraging his team members to work hard and is extremely dedicated. He is always seeking new challenges and has an appreciation for knowledge. It is obvious Loi is going to go on and do great things, and we are all interested to see exactly what those great things will be!”

Loi said the staff members at Addison Trail have helped him be successful, and he credits his counselor, Tina Gatses, for leading him to such a positive path.

“Loi is extremely driven,” Gatses said. “He is passionate about computer science. He excels in everything he does and always gives 110 percent. He has really come out of his shell and is not afraid to go after what he wants. I am extremely proud of the young man he has become.”

Loi also is highly involved with extracurricular activities at Addison Trail.

For four years, he has been a member of the Boys Cross-Country Team, Math Team, Science Olympiad Team (which encouraged him to pursue a career as a scientist), Psychology Club and Key Club, among other activities.

After graduating from high school, Loi’s top choice for college is Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also is applying to Georgia Institute of Technology and California Institute of Technology. Loi plans to study biology because of its complexity and how much we still don’t understand in that subject area. He wants to help the world with his discoveries. Specifically, Loi would like to study genetics and how to manipulate genes to make improvements in the health field and possibly the environment. He also wants to work toward finding a cure for cancer and is considering a career in oncology.

If he has the guts to do that we’ll work with him. He said he’s not going to cut social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; we’re going to hold him to account.”

However, taking direct aim at the president-elect, Sanders said the Democratic Party “will not be party to bigotry or racism.”

“In a democratic society we should have disagreements,” he said. “Debate is good, but we as nation have traveled too far trying to fight against all forms of discrimination. Before this nation became this nation, Native Americans were lied to and cheated. Slavery and racism, I don’t have to explain. 100 years ago, women in America did not have the right to vote, couldn’t get an education or the jobs they wanted. And we don’t have to explain to anyone here the struggles of the gay community.

“I say to Mr. Trump: this country has struggled for far too many years, too many have died or gone to jail to create a less discriminatory society. We are not going back to a discriminatory society.”

He said there also can’t be compromise with Trump on two other major issues: climate change and immigration.

“Mr. Trump told the American people that he believes that climate change is a hoax,” Sanders said. “Climate change is not a hoax; it’s the most serious threat facing this planet.

“Immigration, in my view and in view of most Americans, is that we have 11 million undocumented people and need comprehensive immigration reform and for them to be put on a path to citizen. Willowbrook girls gymnastics team making progress Warriors recently logged high score of year at Addison Trail invitational

The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team is improving and it has the numbers to prove it.

The Warriors, under the direction of first-year coach Deanna Zuchowski, started the season in late November by logging a 110.75 team score at the Glenbard West quad.

About a month later, the Warriors are up to a season-high 119.35, which came during a sixthplace showing at the recent Addison Trail invitational.

“We already have outscored the previous high scores at all three levels,” said Zuchowski. “The girls are more determined. They all have added bonus tricks to their routines and are now trying to perfect those to the best of their ability.”

Willowbrook returned 10 individuals to the team this year. That list includes senior Savannah Catalano, junior Damaries Garcia and sophomores Caitlyn Owen and Autumn Palacios.

They competed at the varsity level at Addison Trail and helped the team log the 119.35 score.

Freshmen Grace Placek, Karolina Terlikowski, Karli Wilson and Melanie Hudson are allaround performers who are competing at the varsity level.

“The strength of this team is it always pushes forward,” said Zuchowski. “They continually work toward a higher goal whether that is perfecting a trick or trying a new one. The girls always are looking forward.”

Zuchowski noted the team is strongest right now on vault and floor. “The girls have a great sense of power and determination through each of these events,” she said.

Zuchowski noted the team has been battling

the injury bug. “We’ve already had a few injuries, but nothing has been stopping these girls from raising the bar on each other,” she said.

“They all have made a strong recovery and are ready to compete.”

Willowbrook’s freshman team finished third out of 12 teams at the Hinsdale Central invitational. Wilson was fourth on vault at 8.65.

Placek was fifth at 8.6. Terlikowski was ninth at 8.5. Terlikowski also took fourth on beam at 8.25.

The varsity also took third in a tri-meet with Downers Grove North and Riverside-Brookfield.

The Warriors also scored a pair of West Suburban Conference Gold Division wins at the varsity level against Hinsdale South and Leyden. Willowbrook had a 115.6 against Hinsdale South and a 114.4 against Leyden. The JV2 team also defeated Hinsdale South, while the JV1 and JV2 teams defeated Leyden.

“Improvements are being seen throughout the team at each level,” said Zuchowski. “New tricks are being performed at each level. They are continuing to perfect their skills on a daily basis. As a new coach, I am excited about the possibilities this team has to offer. With the leadership of the seniors on our team, I believe team camaraderie and drive will push these girls to new levels. From the top down, the girls have a lot of determination and perseverance to excel this year and outreach last year’s numbers.

So far we have done so and are flying through the year. We already have dealt with injuries at every level and the girls have had nothing but determination to come back stronger and safer than before. It has been an exciting year and I can’t wait to see what the girls can accomplish after winter break.”

The District 88 Board of Education recently recognized students from Addison Trail and Willowbrook High Schools for their State-level achievements during the fall season.

Among the 18 honorees were three Blazers footballers and four Warriors girders.

Coach Perkins happy with team’s start

The Willowbrook boys basketball team headed into the Christmas break with an impressive 7-1 overall mark.

The Warriors’ only blemish was a recent 69-57 West Suburban Conference Gold Division setback to Hinsdale South in Darien.

“Hinsdale South is pretty athletic,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins. “I’m not taking anything away from them, they are a good team, but we did not shoot the ball well. We dug ourselves a hole in the first quarter and got down 18-9.”

Willowbrook led 7-2 early in the first quarter.

“We were up in the first minute or two and then we went cold and they went on a 16-2 run,” said Perkins. “I wasn’t happy, but I thought we did a good job of getting back in the game several times. We got it to five or seven points multiple times but we could never extend the momentum. We had a lot of mental breakdowns with the full-court pressure defense. They continued to break our press and get

easy layups. We were forced to press because we got down and it forced our hand. It was our Achilles’ heel.”

The loss put Willowbrook at 3-1 in conference play.

“It was a good eye-opener for us,” the coach said. “We told the kids the sky is not falling and it’s not the end of the world. It’s our first defeat. A lot of teams have losses. I think it helped us regroup and get ready for the Christmas tournament.”

Ethan Schuemer led the Warriors against Hinsdale South with 14 points and nine rebounds. Freddy Clay added 12 points, while Sikander Zafar had 11 points. Matthew Myers had nine points.

“It was good to have three guys in double figures,” said Perkins.

Overall, Perkins likes what he’s seen over the first eight-game body of work.

The Addison Trail girls basketball team recently completed a four-game stretch against Illiana Christian, Elgin Larkin and conference foes Willowbrook and Downers Grove South.

Illinois consumers also showed strong support for a series of reforms in the industry that would amount to a “Cable Customer’s Bill of Rights.”

The following are the reforms and the percentage of respondents who supported them: Requiring pay-TV companies to offer a basic, low-cost package that any customer could choose: 8 percent.

Requiring reforms aimed at reducing excessive cable box fees: 71.4 percent.

Requiring pay-TV companies to offer a-la-carte programming (only paying for the channels you use): 71.1 percent.

Requiring pay-TV companies to offer a lowcost plan for senior citizens: 69.8 percent.

Requiring pay-TV companies to allow customers to cancel service online, without having to call: 68.7 percent.

“It’s obvious Illinois consumers are hungry for changes in the pay-TV industry, but reforms usually don’t come quickly,” Kolata said. “CUB’s guide focuses on what consumers can do today to help reduce their bills.”

CUB’s Guide to Cutting Your TV Costs includes sections explaining how to deal with customer service; tips on cutting your current pay-TV bill, and alternatives to traditional cable service—including new streaming services as well as simply using an antenna. Kolata said new customers in the pay-TV industry often get the best deals, while the longest, most loyal customers end up paying more.

“Based on complaints we hear, pay TV is one of the few industries where the longer you are a customer, the more you get charged,” he said.

“CUB’s guide tries to help customers fix that.”

Reacting to public opinion polls it conducted that show Illinois consumers are hungry for lower cable/satellite TV bills and support sweeping industry reforms, the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) recently released its first-ever guide to help TV viewers cut costs.

Illinois consumers should visit www.CUBCableCenter.com to receive a free copy of CUB’s Guide to Cutting Your TV Costs. Visitors to the online center can also take a survey on pay-TV service and give their opinions on reforming the industry.

The guide includes tips on how consumers can reduce TV bills, and it details the pros and cons of various choices in the market. Those choices include cable, satellite and triple-play bundles, as well as cable alternatives, such as new streaming services for people who want to “cut the cord.”

“People don’t feel like they have a lot of options when it comes to their monthly TV bills,” CUB Executive Director David Kolata said. “That’s why we’ve created this guide—to empower Illinois consumers and give them an easy-to-understand checklist of actions they can take to cut their TV costs.”

CUB investigated if public polling supported the impromptu comments about cable service it has heard for three decades from consumers who contact the utility watchdog seeking guidance on telecommunications, electric or natural gas issues.

In late October and early November, the consumer group conducted a series of Google Consumer Surveys of randomly selected people (25 and older) from every corner of Illinois. Each question was asked independently and had at least 1,000 respondents among people surfing the Internet to read online content. The survey results were statistically significant, with a margin of error no greater than +/-3.1 percent.
