9 charged in alleged theft from sporting goods store

Dick’s Sporting Goods in Lombard reportedly robbed of merchandise worth $2,600

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced last week that bond had been set for nine individuals accused of stealing merchandise in from Dick’s Sporting Goods located in Lombard. Antwana Washington, 33 of Chicago, James Hodge, 25, of South Holland, Travis Jackson, 25 of Chicago, Karizma Lawrence, 18 of Calumet City, Tiana Smith, 18, of Chicago, Stephanie Mitchell, 18, of Chicago, Tia Jennings, 18, of Chicago and Tashayn Ross 19 of Chicago appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $10,000 with 10% to apply for each of them with the exception of Lawrence who was released on her own recognizance. An unidentified juvenile has also been charged.

On December 20, 2017, at approximately 9:39 p.m., Lombard Police were called to the Dicks Sporting Goods store located at 810 East Butterfield Road in response to an alleged retail theft in progress. It is alleged that the above-named defendants, with the exception of Washington, entered the store and began selecting and concealing items about their person.

It is further alleged that the individuals then exited the store with the items but proceeded to throw the merchandise into the parking lot once they observed squad cars with their lights on in the parking lot. It is alleged that the defendants entered two cars and attempted to flee the scene. It is alleged that the retail value of the merchandise is approximately $2,600.

It is further alleged that Washington did not enter the store but instead stayed outside in her vehicle. It is

alleged that Washington and three of the defendants fled the scene westbound on Butterfield Road and a high-speed chase ensued reaching speeds of up to 75 MPH in a 35 MPH zone on Roosevelt Road. This

vehicle was apprehended in a parking lot after authorities used stop sticks disable the vehicle. The vehicle containing the remaining defendants was apprehended at the scene.

Each defendant is facing Retail

Theft (Class 3 Felony) and Burglary (Class 2 Felony) charges. In addition, Washington is facing one count of Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, a Class 4 Felony. The next court appearance for each of the defendants

is scheduled for January 16, 2018, in front of Judge Liam Brennan.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

This holiday season, the Villa Park Police Department will work around the clock to keep drivers and passengers safe as they search for alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers.

From now through the early morning hours of Jan. 2, the Villa Park Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois in a year-end Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement.

“Now through New Year’s Day, motorists will notice increased enforcement watching closely for anyone who is driving impaired,” said Sgt. James Cihak “It is vital that we keep our travelers safe, not just at the holidays, but every day. That’s why we’ll arrest anyone who chooses to drive impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Officers also will be looking for, and ticketing, individuals who aren’t buckled up.

It is the law in Illinois to wear your seat belt, no matter where you are seated in the vehicle.

The holidays are a special time, full of excitement and endless fes-

tivities. Too often, these celebrations bring higher numbers of impaired drivers to the roads, endangering other motorists. Drunk and drug-impaired driving is deadly. Last year, 37,461 people were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the United States. Of those killed, 28 percent (10,497) died in crashes in which a driver had a blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) over the limit of 0.08.

“We are committed to doing whatever it takes to help save lives by keeping impaired drivers off the road,” said Deputy Chief William Lyons.

Impaired driving offenders often serve jail time, lose their driver’s license, are charged higher insurance rates and pay unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, car towing, repairs and lost wages. The ultimate cost of impaired driving is causing a traffic crash that injures or kills.

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort is made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Small businesses in Illinois will no longer have to pay excessive startup fees, thanks to Villa Park State Senator Tom Cullerton.

Cullerton’s bipartisan initiative, Senate Bill 867, decreases the filing fee for small businesses to register in Illinois.

“This new law displays our state’s commitment to stimulating and revitalizing Illinois’ economy,” he said. “Cutting startup fees will help new businesses get off the ground and set up roots here in Illinois. Encouraging economic development in our state will help create new jobs, increase the tax base and grow our economy.”

Senate Bill 867 reduces a number of filing fees for Limited Liability Companies (LLCs), and changes the filing fees for LLCs to match those for corporations.

“This new law evens the playing field for small businesses in Illinois,” Nanette Gudenkauf, President and CEO of the Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce said. “Lowering the LLC fees in Illinois will energize economic development and encourage new businesses to form in our communities. I commend Senator Tom Cullerton for passing this monumental new law and displaying his commitment to growing DuPage County’s economy.”

Under previous law, the filing fee to create a new LLC in Illinois was $500; the filing fee is now $150. The annual filing fee for LLCs has been reduced from $250 to a much lower fee of $75.

Cullerton expects this new law will increase the number of new jobs in Illinois.

“The $500 fee was one of the highest in the country and is significantly higher than all our neighboring states,” Cullerton said. “Removing this hurdle will ensure Illinois businesses can achieve entrepreneurial success.”

Senate Bill 867 passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support and goes into effect immediately.

Villa Park resident joins Community Bank of Elmhurst Bruce A. Hill of Villa Park will join the Community Bank of Elmhurst (CBE) as a Personal Banker on January 2, 2018. Hill has spent more than 30 years in the Elmhurst area primarily with non-profits in numerous administrative roles. He spent 25 years at Elmhurst College, his 1976 Alma Mater, until departing in 2009.

She said over the course of its history, the once-bustling community garnered the moniker of the Versailles of the West. In fact, the Liberty Bell of the West was gifted to the Kaskaskia’s Immaculate Conception in 1741 in recognition of its importance. The bell still sits among the scattered historic buildings left on the island.

Lyons said before being incorporated, the king of France had sent a military detachment to build what would be Fort De Chartres. This proved to be a valuable asset in the years and conflicts to come.

After the French and Indian War ended, in 1765, Britain took the fort.

Lyons said because of poor conditions there, the British moved to Kaskaskia,

which is where Clark found them during the Revolutionary War. Lyons said while Clark and his men, who took Kaskaskia without a drop of blood being shed, announced they were happy to let the residents live their lives as they chose, they would need to be supplied. She said the following winter was a hard one as many larders had been raided to help with the war effort.

Lyons said after the war ended, Kaskaskia was part of several different territories. First it was part of the Virginia Commonwealth after the Treaty of 1783. Then it was in the Northwest Territory until it was part of the Indiana Territory in 1800. Finally, in 1809, Kaskaskia was part of the Illinois Territory.

When President James Monroe signed off on Illinois being admitted

as the 21st state in the union in 1818, Kaskaskia was chosen as its first capital. But this didn’t last long. Within a few months of acquiring statehood, Vandalia, which was not even populated at the time, was chosen as the state’s new capital as many favored its more central location within the original 16 southern counties. The first meeting of the second General Assembly was held at a newly constructed statehouse in 1820.

Though at one time home to a vibrant population, Kaskaskia Island now is home to an almost startling quiet. Fewer than 100 people call the island home, with miles (in some cases) between houses. The Liberty Bell of the West sits encased in a brick shrine and the Immaculate Conception Church, its final brick building, just a

few yards away. Yawning trees dot the grounds.

Lyons said while Kaskaskia is not the tourism hub of, say, Abraham Lincoln’s estate in the current state capital of Springfield, she is happy with things the way they are. She said many who still live on the island do so for a reason: it’s quiet. She said her biggest struggle as curator is getting people to see the value in history, as well as seeing the value in keeping historic buildings standing when possible.

“Sometimes the impression is new is better,” she said, noting the irony that many buildings that replace historic structures are often estimated to last only a few decades while those that come down have lasted centuries.

She said she always tries to explain the value in these historic places. And

when she loses, she is not happy.

“It’s not a good feeling,” Lyons said of seeing pieces of her county’s history meet the wrecking ball.

Lyons said she wants to preserve her home’s history and wants to ensure the buildings and museums can be maintained. This has been no easy task, as budgets in Illinois have shrunk in recent decades. However, she said she has to strike a balance when it comes to Kaskaskia: The grounds and buildings need to be kept up and the history should be celebrated, but not at the expense of those who still call Illinois’ first capital their home.

“The rich and famous go off and buy islands so they can have a secluded place to live and we don’t have to do that,” Lyons said. “We have a secluded place.”

Scorza playing well for Addison Trail girls basketball team Blazers in midst of Lisle tournament

One key bright spot for the Addison Trail girls basketball team has been the play of senior Nicci Scorza.

Scorza, through late last week, was averaging 12.5 points per game to go with 8.5 rebounds per contest.

“Nicci is playing really well for us,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Schader.

Through late last week the Blazers

were 3-7 overall. In recent action, Addison Trail lost 68-35 to Downers Grove South in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division game.

The Blazers also lost to District 88 neighbor Willowbrook 61-42 in WSC Gold play and dropped a 3930 non-conference game to Elgin Larkin.

“We are starting to play better and harder at this point, but we’re just not hitting a lot of shots,” said Schader.

“That’s what is really hurting us. Our field-goal percentage is right around 32 percent and we’re averaging around 22-23 turnovers a game.”

Despite the shooting struggles, Schader is seeing progress. “All the kids are playing and all the kids are playing hard, but the baskets are not falling for us,” he said. “We’re also missing a lot of free throws.”

Schader liked the effort his team gave in the conference loss to Downers Grove South.

“I thought we played well against Downers South, but the outcome was not what we were hoping for,” he said. “We shot 12-for-22 from the free-throw line and missed some shots.”

Addison Trail recently played

Willowbrook boys basketball team defeats pair of conference opponents Warriors headed into holiday tournament with 6-1 mark

After a tough overtime loss in Maywood to Proviso East, the Willowbrook boys basketball team righted the ship in a hurry.

The Warriors recorded recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division wins against Addison Trail and Hinsdale South.

The two wins pushed Willowbrook to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

In an 80-38 WSC Gold win against District 88 neighbor Addison Trail, Marshawn Phillips led the Warriors with 16 points. Levi Bentsen had 15 points, while Ethan Schuemer and Matas Masys each tallied 13 points.

“Throughout the game we did

a good job defensively,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins. “We forced a lot of turnovers and that got us into the open court where we had a lot of fast-break opportunities. Our defense fed our offense.”

Perkins noted Willowbrook forced 27 Addison Trail turnovers in the contest.

“It was our full-court pressure and the intensity of it,” said Perkins.

“We were able to get some steals in the backcourt and that gave us 3-on2 and 2-on-1 advantages.”

Willowbrook also downed Hinsdale South 61-53.

“We were down by five at halftime,” Perkins pointed out. “We had a monster third quarter that put us up by 10 points in the fourth quarter.

We had a big second half and particularly in the third quarter.”

Schuemer recorded a rare triple double that included blocked shots in the statistical equation. He finished with 20 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots against Hinsdale.

“Ethan was a man-child in that game,” said Perkins. “We were in our press and when they would break the press he was patrolling the rim. They attacked him and he was able to get a lot of blocks. He was all over the place. He came up huge and was the main reason we pulled out that win.”

Phillips added 12 points, while

Cornelius Paxton Jr. added 11 points. Masys and Sikander Zafar each had seven points.

“Sikander deserves special mention,” said Perkins. “He played great defensively and held the other team’s best player to 14 points.”

Perkins said the loss to Proviso East at the buzzer in overtime was tough, but it was a game the team has learned from. “Proviso is a good team,” he said. “I wish we could have played the last minute or two over again. We were two ranked teams and evenly matched. It could have gone either way. We get to see them again in January. It will be a good game again and hopefully there will be different results.”

Willowbrook is playing in the Glenbard West holiday tournament.

Fenton girls basketball team wins pair of games Benbow continues to star for Bison; Records triple-double against ICCP

There was even more positive news recently for the Fenton girls basketball team.

The Bison recorded a pair of victories to move their overall record to 4-7.

Fenton downed IC Catholic Prep 74-56 in Elmhurst in a West Suburban Conference Blue Division game and also scored a 77-73 win at Westmont in non-conference action.

The IC Catholic Prep win pushed Fenton to 2-3 in MSC Red play.

In the IC Catholic Prep win, Amari Benbow had a triple-double with 16

points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

Fenton coach Dave Mello said he’s been impressed of late with one certain aspect of his team’s offense.

“The team is doing a great job taking shots,” he said. “We aren’t worried about working for the best shot. We want the quickest shot.”

And shooting-wise the Bison have excelled from the 3-point line of late.

“I like the fact we are making a good number of 3-pointers each game,” said Mello. “We made 12 against IC and 14 against Westmont.”

Mello added defense continues to be a work in progress. “We have been having some issues with our defense,” he said.

“We need to get back to our press forcing turnovers. We must also work on boxing out and cutting off the sideline.”

Mello noted Benbow and Jamie Minard have stepped things up of

late for the Bison. “Obviously, Amari is one who has really taken off. She is handling the ball, scoring, rebounding and setting her teammates up for easy scores,” he said. “Also, Jamie Minard has been on a nice run. Not only is she scoring, but she is doing a nice job rebounding. Her leadership has been big as well.”

Fenton opened play earlier this week in the Chicago Collins tournament with games against Solorio and Westinghouse. Fenton plays Roosevelt today at Collins and will wrap up play in the tournament on Friday.

“We feel the season certainly has been a success thus far when all things are considered with the late coaching change and implementing a new system,” said Mello. “However, none of us are satisfied just competing during the first half of the season.

We are looking to keep having success in the second half as well.”

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team scores road win at Illiana Christian Meurer leads the way with 17 points

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team had all its rostered players available for the first time this season in a recent contest and the results were overwhelmingly positive.

The Knights headed to the far south suburbs where they were 68-38 winners against Illiana Christian in a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division contest.

The win pushed IC Catholic Prep to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in MSC Blue play.

Alex Meurer had 17 points to lead the Knights. Kevin Cheng chipped in 14 points, while Kris Askew had 10 points and Khali Saunders had eight points.

Nico Gaudio finished with seven points. Meurer hit two 3-pointers in the game, while Cheng, Griffen Eichhorn and Jared Bon each had one 3-pointer.

The Knights jumped out to a 12-2 lead after the first quarter and led 2519 at halftime. IC Catholic Prep outscored Illiana 22-14 in the third and 21-5 in the fourth quarter.

“That was the first game we had everybody available on our team this season,” said Tyrrell. “That was a nice feeling to have as a coach.”

Tyrrell cited defensive excellence in the game as a key to victory. “Defensively, we played an outstanding game,” he said. “We started out the game leading 12-2 and then held them to five points in the fourth quarter. We’ve been having slow starts lately in some of these games. It was nice to see that we could come out and put ourselves in a good position right from the start.”

Again, the Knights received varied

contributions up and down the roster.

“Alex scored 17 points for us and did a great job,” said Tyrrell. “We had a nice performance by Kevin Cheng and from Khali Saunders and Nico Gaudio. In addition to Alex, we had a lot of guys play extremely well. They complemented each other.”

Tyrrell also lauded the play of Askew. “Kris played a solid game for us as well,” he said. “Defensively, he’s been guarding some of the better guards we’ve faced. He’s done a really solid job of containing, in particular Illiana’s best guard. He was held to six points. Kris also scored 10 points and had 10 points the game before against Glenbard South. He’s starting to come around. He played football for the first time this fall and now he’s starting to get back into basketball shape and getting comfortable with the guys. The same is true with Khali Saunders.”

Tyrrell said it was nice to see the team excel against pressure defense.

“We’ve struggled against pressure of late,” he said. “In the first half we had 10 turnovers, but did an outstanding job with that in the second half and had only four turnovers. We were more patient and broke down their 1-2-2 half-court trap. We did a nice job getting the ball into the middle and that opened up things for Alex in the middle of the zone press and for Kevin at times.”

Free-throw shooting also aided IC Catholic Prep in the Illiana win.

Meurer made 7 of 8 free throws, while Askew was 8 of 10, Cheng was 5 of 6, Gaudio was 3 of 3 and Saunders made four free throws.

“We did an outstanding job from the line especially down the stretch and that opened things up,” said Tyrrell. “It was a much closer game than the score shows. We outscored them 21-5 in the fourth and a lot of that came from free throws.”

Tyrrell liked seeing his team shake off the Glenbard South loss. “Glenbard was a very competitive game,” he said. “They are a bigger and physical team with good length. They aggressively trapped our ball screen and that caused challenges. We struggled against their pressure.”

The game was tied at the end of the first quarter and at halftime and the Knights found themselves trailing by a point heading into the fourth quarter. “We got outscored 12-8 in the fourth quarter. We didn’t have much of a flow in the fourth quarter,” said Tyrrell. “We started forcing things and making bad decisions and they capitalized on some of those opportunities and we weren’t able to come back from it. There still are good things to take away from these games. We’ve been watching film and breaking things down. We have some new guys and it’s been an educational process. They are learning to play in our system and to play with each other. Khali is new to the team and Dominic Gaudio and Ryan Wojtalewicz are two sophomores who are in our top-seven rotation and have started at various points. I’ve been pleased with their performance and what they have been doing. We still have a lot to learn as a group and, again, we’ve only had one game with everybody together. I’m very optimistic what we can be down the stretch of this season.”

Even with two losses in conference, Tyrrell feels his team still is in the thick of things in the MSC Blue.

“The conference is very competitive but balanced,” he said. “Each game we play is going to be a battle. That’s what makes it exciting. Even at this point with two losses we still are right in the hunt. Riverside-Brookfield was 3-1 and we beat them.

Glenbard South was 3-1 and Wheaton Academy was 3-1.”

DuPage, Kane, Will, McHenry and Lake Counties file complaints in llinois against manufacturers of prescription opioid painkillers

On Tuesday, Dec. 26, it was learned that the Illinois Counties of DuPage, Kane, Will, and McHenry are filing lawsuits against some of the nation’s largest pharmaceutical companies and physicians over the aggressive and fraudulent marketing of prescription opioid painkillers.

This drug epidemic is being fought by countless Illinois families and has led to thousands of overdoses and hundreds of deaths in 2017 alone.

In addition, Lake County, has joined the coalition of counties and filed a similar lawsuit against the pharmaceutical companies.

In the complaints filed in Illinois State Court, the four counties seek relief including compensatory and punitive damages for the millions of dollars they spend each year to combat drug-related crimes and the public nuisance created by the drug companies’ deceptive marketing campaigns.

In addition to monetary damages, the counties are seeking to enjoin the defendants and prohibit them from what the complaints call “their continued unfair and deceptive acts and practices.”

“Opioid abuse has grown at such an alarming rate the past few years that we can no longer sit idly by while community after community and family after family is ravaged by this indiscriminate killer,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Berlin said. “It is our sincerest hope that the lawsuits filed this morning will not only prevent more deaths, but will also begin the healing process and allow DuPage County to recoup a portion of the losses incurred fighting this deadly epidemic.”

The defendants in the lawsuits for DuPage County, Kane County, Will County, and McHenry County are: Purdue Pharma L.P.; Purdue Pharma, Inc.; The Purdue Frederick Company, Inc.; Abbott Laboratories; Abbott Laboratories, Inc.; Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc.; Cephalon, Inc.; Johnson & Johnson; Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Ortho-McNeilJanssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Janssen Pharmaceutica, Inc.; Endo Health Solutions Inc.; Endo Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Dr. Perry Fine; Dr. Scott Fishman; and Dr. Lynn Webster.

According to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health, opioids contributed to nearly 1,200 overdose deaths in Illinois in 2016.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reports that more Illinoisans died from an opioid-related drug overdose (due to heroin and prescription opioid pain relievers) in 2014 than from homicide or motor vehicle accidents. Illinois is one of 14 states that has seen an 8.3 percent increase in overdose deaths.

Apart from the toll on human life, the crisis has financially strained the services the counties provide its residents and employees. Human services, social services, court services, law enforcement services, the office of the coroner/medical examiner and health services, including hospital, emergency and ambulatory services, have all been severely impacted by the crisis. For example, as a direct and foreseeable consequence of the defendants’ egregious conduct, the counties have paid, and continue to pay, millions of dollars for health care costs stemming from prescription opioid dependency.

The lawsuit alleges the defendants sought to create a false perception in the minds of physicians, patients, health care providers and health care payers that using opioids to treat chronic pain was safe for most patients and that the drugs’ benefits outweighed the risks.
