Police report theft of three vehicles left running with keys By Dee Longfellow FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT

Last week, the reports from the Villa Park Police Department contained three incidents of vehicles which were stolen while they were left running, unattended, with the keys in the ignition. On Dec. 6 at around 5:59 a.m., a vehicle was reported stolen. Police said that an unknown suspect apparently stole the car while it was parked unsecured in a driveway on the 200 block of N. Cornell. The auto was left running with the keys in the ignition. A similar incident took place on Dec. 7 at about 8:30 a.m. in the 200 block of E. Division. An unknown suspect reported stole a vehicle that was parked unsecured in the driveway and was left running with the keys in the ignition. Then on Dec. 10, another vehicle was reported stolen while it was parked unsecured in a parking lot near a cigar store. Police said that between 5:30 and 5:40 p.m. Once again, the vehicle was left running with the keys in the ignition. The Villa Park Police Department reminds residents to lock and secure their vehicles, whether at home in the garage or on the driveway as well as while out and about in the community. As evidenced by the instance that reportedly occurred in a period of just ten minutes, vehicle theft can happen quickly, even if a person is running into a store “just for a minute.”
