Police report theft of three vehicles left running with keys

Last week, the reports from the Villa Park Police Department contained three incidents of vehicles which were stolen while they were left running, unattended, with the keys in the ignition.

On Dec. 6 at around 5:59 a.m., a vehicle was reported stolen. Police said that an unknown suspect apparently stole the car while it was parked unsecured in a driveway on the 200 block of N. Cornell. The auto was left running with the keys in the ignition.

A similar incident took place on Dec. 7 at about 8:30 a.m. in the 200 block of E. Division. An unknown suspect reported stole a vehicle that was parked unsecured in the driveway and was left running with the keys in the ignition.

Then on Dec. 10, another vehicle was reported stolen while it was parked unsecured in a parking lot near a cigar store. Police said that between 5:30 and 5:40 p.m. Once again, the vehicle was left running with the keys in the ignition.

The Villa Park Police Department reminds residents to lock and secure their vehicles, whether at home in the garage or on the driveway as well as while out and about in the community. As evidenced by the instance that reportedly occurred in a period of just ten minutes, vehicle theft can happen quickly, even if a person is running into a store “just for a minute.”

A year to be proud of

District 88 takes a look at the school year so far and upcoming

In the most recent issue of the District 88 newsletter, Willowbrook Principal Dan Krause wrote a column which included a review of the

2016-17 school year so far, as well as a look at what’s still to come. Here are the highlights: Academically, Krause pointed out that Willowbrook and Addison Trail have both received national recogni-

tion over the past year.

• Both schools were once again named by The Washington Post as two of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.” Columnist Jay Mathews implemented that nation-

al ranking system for high schools, formerly used by Newsweek, and District 88 has been ranked for nine consecutive years, since 2008.

• Willowbrook and Addison Trail Dan Krause also were named as “Best Public High Schools” in the 2016 Niche Rankings, and District 88 was ranked 32nd in Illinois.

• District 88 high schools received recognition as two of the “Best High Schools” by U.S. News & World Report.

According to Krause, Willowbrook students have completed more Advanced Placement (AP)/ college-level and dual-credit coursework than ever before. These courses allow students to earn college credit while still in high school.

“We also continue to expand our academic offerings to prepare students for life beyond Willowbrook,” Krause said, “including our pre-engineering program through Project Lead The Way and The Brook Catering Co., which is comprised of Willowbrook students who are enrolled in culinary classes at the school.”

On the sports scene, highlights of the year including watching the WBHS football team advance to the Quarterfinals of the 7A IHSA State Football Playoffs for the first time since 1990.

WB sophomore Elissa Haake competed in the IHSA Girls Swimming and Diving State Meet in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle, where she placed 10th and 9th, respectively.

In music, five WB students were named All-State Musicians by the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA). The students will perform during the Illinois Music Education Conference in January.

“It’s tremendous to see our students continue the Pride, Tradition and Excellence that is Willowbrook High School through earning conference, regional and state recognitions

for their performances in and beyond our building,” Krause said.

Students continue to “Live the Warrior Code” and give back to the community, raising funds for those in need and participating in multiple service projects. Through blood drives, winter apparel collection, food drives, holiday gift collections and more, Willowbrook students and staff have assisted local agencies, foundations and community members throughout the first semester, Krause said.

On March 18, 2017, District 88 schools will host the annual Relay For Life of District 88 Youth, with a goal of raising more than $55,000 for the American Cancer Society. That event is part of WB’s Brook Olympics, which will take place from March 13-17, 2017.

Krause said upcoming highlights will include watching members of the class of 2017 cross the stage and graduate in May and welcoming members of the class of 2021, who will begin their high school career in August.

Willowbrook will continue with their Friday Night Connect program, which is a partnership between the high school, local clergy, the Villa Park Police Department and local governmental officials to provide students with safe, positive activities that are free to participants.

“All students in sixth through eighth grades are invited to join Friday Night Connect,” he said. “They will be mentored by Willowbrook students (with adult supervision).”

“We also are excited to partner with the Villa Park Public Library to provide an Engineering Club for students in sixth through eighth grades,” Krause added.

The club will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 17, Feb. 21, March 21 and April 18, 2017, at the library.

Elmhurst Lacrosse online registration open

Elmhurst Lacrosse announced online registration for the spring 2017 season is now underway.

Registration closes Jan. 15 and organization officials said no registrations will be taken after that date.

Elmhurst Lacrosse is a nonprofit organization run by parent volunteers dedicated to the development and instruction of boys lacrosse.

Elmhurst Lacrosse offers league play for boys in second through eighth grades.

Elmhurst Lacrosse’s mission is to

provide the youth of Elmhurst and surrounding areas with an inclusive and fun environment for kids of all skill levels to learn and participate in the game of lacrosse and to prepare the youth of Elmhurst and surrounding areas with the basic skills and understanding of the game to compete at the high-school level.

Elmhurst Lacrosse’s season takes place in the spring beginning in April. Games generally are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays and occasionally midweek.

WBHS hosts 4th session of moral leadership training On Dec. 8, Willowbrook hosted the fourth of 10 sessions in the DeVos Moral Leadership Training.

Select Willowbrook upperclassmen who applied have the opportunity to participate in those sessions throughout the school year.

Participants are members of the school’s MENTORS and Ladies Lunch groups. MENTORS is designed to train upperclassmen to guide underclassmen through being mentored by adult men.

The group meets once a week during lunch, and community members provide motivational and educational presentations.

Ladies Lunch offers support and ongoing motivational clinics for female students in an effort to help

members gain confidence and realize their true potential.

DeVos Moral Leadership Training is funded through a grant from Christ Church of Oak Brook and focuses on core values of accountability, balance, interdependence, leverage and empowerment. During the December session, featured speaker Amy Williams (a youth advocate, speaker, trainer, mentor and author) discussed the concept of balance and how effective leaders understand the importance of living a balanced life, concerned with the development of the whole person. Participants then reflected on the information and how they can apply it to their lives and help the younger students they mentor do so as well.

Montini Catholic students send Christmas greetings to the military Montini Catholic students expressed their Christmas spirit by sending greetings and well wishes to deployed military personnel.

The unique effort was part of a Veterans Day project spear headed

by English teacher, Rita Keogh and presented to her junior and senior classes.

“I was so happy to see their enthu-

siasm in writing the letters,” she said.

The class wrote 93 letters that were delivered to Country Radio Station US 99.5, as part of its “10,000 Letters for the Troops” campaign in an effort to send well wishes to troops who can not make it home for Christmas.

“Our students took the task quite seriously when writing the letters,” Keogh said. “Some even

included artwork in their letters.”

The radio station has promised to send all the letters along, so that military personnel will have them by Christmas Day. “We were honored to be able to participate in this worthwhile and fun project,” said Keogh. “We are thankful for our men and women in the service!”

Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett and Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb gathered at Monona Terrace in Madison recently for the dedication of the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail. The event celebrates the placement of the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail signage along the approximately 200-mile route in southern Wisconsin.

“Wisconsin is home to beautiful natural resources and diverse landscapes that inspired the designs of the world-famous architect,” said Klett. “The trail will help brand and elevate Wisconsin’s architectural and historic treasures, create greater visitation to the sites and generate an economic impact for the state and local communities through traveler spending.”

The signage plan includes large freeway guide signs, route marker signs, and directional and trailblazer signs. By the end of 2016, 115 route marker signs will be installed as part of the Phase I signage. Signs are located in Richland, Sauk, Iowa, Dane, Jefferson, Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties.

“The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is pleased to support our state’s flourishing tourism industry. We hope that the signed trail makes it easier for people to find and explore the impressive Frank Lloyd Wright buildings,” said Gottlieb.

IC Catholic boys basketball team defeats Fenton

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team recorded a recent 53-51 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Fenton.

The Knights trailed 15-11 after the first quarter, but came back and took a 24-23 lead into halftime. IC Catholic Prep led 36-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

Austin Reed led the Knights with 18 points. Alex Meurer had 12 points, while Amari Reed finished with 10 points. Matt Sutton added five points.

Austin Reed hit two 3-pointers in the game. Sutton added one.

Earlier, the Knights lost a MSC Blue game to Aurora Central Catholic in Aurora.

“Aurora Central shot the ball really well,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “They went up 20-6 early.

They have three very good outside shooters and one of the guys went off for 39 points. We got it to six points and had an opportunity to cut it to three with a three in the corner, but they got the rebound and we had to start fouling. We still battled even though we were down big early. That’s a tough atmosphere to play in. They have a good student section there. We struggled defending their flex offense and couldn’t get into a rhythm. We tried several things.”

Tyrrell said the team may have been still on the emotional high of defeating conference stalwart Riverside-Brookfield. “We might have been too up coming off the R-B win,” he said. “The main thing is to not get too high with the wins and don’t get too low with the losses. We have to keep our composure.”

Austin Reed continues to be a key component for the Knights. “Austin has been playing very well for the team of late and his brother, Amari, has been stepping up,” said Tyrrell. “He played

well against Fenton and had 10 points.”

Tyrrell also has been impressed with the play of Meurer, Kevin Cheng and Matt Sutton. “Alex has been very steady all year,” the coach said. “Both Austin and Alex have done a great job from the free-throw line. Kevin has had a good year and Matt Sutton has returned to action from football.

He played against Aurora Central and Fenton. He’s going to need a little time to get into basketball rhythm. We’re working him in.”

Pat Shannon continues to provide a boost off the bench. “One of the bright spots for us is the energy of Pat Shannon,” said Tyrrell. “He brings a spark of intensity off the bench. He plays extremely hard. He’s been another X-factor for us and so has Griffen Eichhorn.

He brings a lot of enthusiasm to the team. He likes to have fun and keeps the mood light. It’s nice to have him playing.”

After the Fenton win IC Catholic Prep was 7-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

“Fenton is a team that plays hard,” said Tyrrell. “For some reason we struggle in these Tuesday night games against them. Austin was a little under the weather and still played a solid game. They got the lead early and kept it close. The silver lining is we did get the win. The kids knocked down free throws, which was encouraging to see.”

IC Catholic Prep also found out it will host a Class 2A sub-sectional this season.

“Timothy Christian and St. Edward and Westmont are in it and some city teams,” said Tyrrell. “In the past we headed out west, but this year we go toward the city after the regional (Guerin Prep is a sectional host). It will be different, but we’re excited about it. It’s always fun thinking about the playoffs but we know we have a lot of work to do before that.”

Fenton girls basketball team excelling on defensive end Bison preparing for Northside Prep holiday tournament

One key area the Fenton girls basketball team has excelled in this season is defense.

“Our defense has been pretty good,” said Fenton coach Tim Anderson. “Our big thing is some of these teams are lighting it up against us.

Wheaton Academy shot 48 percent against us and Aurora Central Catholic shot 56% and we’re not talking about giving up layups here. This is astronomical stuff.”

Anderson said Fenton has been consistently challenged in the early part of the season, particularly in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue

Division.

“We’ve had our ups and downs,” he said. “The competition we’ve played is very tough. We’re struggling still to put the ball in the basket, but we are working on it. When the game starts we have a tendency to have too much of a sense of urgency with what we need to do. We played Riverside-Brookfield (conference team) recently and they have two senior guards who have been on the varsity since freshman year. They lit it up against us and I thought we did a good job guarding them. We got down and we tended to get a little panicky. That’s been a pattern for us so far this year and we’re working

hard to break it.”

Anderson has been encouraged by improvement he’s seen on the offensive end. “The good news is our shooting percentage has gone up, but we’ve been a little overmatched in some games. We’re working on it,” he said. ‘We’ve made a concerted effort to work on our shot and our fundamentals.”

The longtime coach noted he’s seen two players in particular take steps forward in the form of Patty Acosta and Amari Benbow.

“Patty has been a pleasant surprise,” said Anderson. “I’m so pleased with how it happens. You have a senior and all of a sudden,

boom, you see something you haven’t seen. I call it the quantum leap.

Patty has been a big bright spot for us. About two weeks ago something hit her and all of a sudden, wow! Her game has been elevated. I use her as a great example to the rest of the team to keep moving forward and improving. Patty is doing a fantastic job of that.

“Amari is another one who all of a sudden, wow! Her game has been elevated as well and we need that.

We need a go-to person who is saying give me the ball, give me the ball.

She’s kind of looking to do that.”

Fenton will head to Northside Prep for a holiday tournament. Fenton fin-

ished second there last year.

“The Christmas tournament should be really good for us,” said Anderson.

“We were there last year and did well.

We should be competitive. As long as we keep playing defense like we have we’re going to be fine. These girls work really hard and I can’t ask for any more than that. We have to figure out how to take what we’ve learned in practice and go out and execute it during the games. The hard work is why we are where we are right now in terms of progress. If the hard work wasn’t there in practice it would be a different scenario. It’s there and now we have to get everything to show itself in our games.”

Sasenick bowls conference-high game and series against Addison Trail

Willowbrook junior girls bowler Dana Sasenick was clicking on all cylinders during the team’s recent West Suburban Conference victory over District 88 neighbor Addison Trail.

Sasenick rolled the conference

high game of the year to date with a 269 and ended with a 644 high series, also the top three-game mark in the league through late last week.

Willowbrook won at both the varsity and junior-varsity levels.

In Sasenick’s 269 game against Addison Trail she rolled eight strikes in a row out of the gate and followed

that up with a spare in the ninth and a strike and spare in the 10th to notch the high game of her career.

Sasenick had games of 205, 269 and 170. Freshman Makaylah Jones rolled a 564 series with games of 178, 189 and 197. Senior Jordan Tiberi had games of 193, 184 and 200 for a 577 series. Sophomore Katie

AT-Willowbrook boys swimming team off to fast start Recent victory over Downers Grove South provides plenty of cause for optimism

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys co-op swimming team got itself off to a fast start with a pair of West Suburban Conference Gold Division wins.

AT-Willowbrook defeated Leyden and then scored a key win over Downers Grove South.

“Downers Grove South was a big win for us.

They shared the conference title with Hinsdale South last year,” said AT-Willowbrook coach Neil Wahlgren. “With also beating Leyden, those were two teams we lost to last year and now we beat them. We’re off to a good start.”

Wahlgren benefits from having many key contributors back this season. That group includes Jacob Grygo (Addison Trail, 50, 100), Mikey Strycharz (Addison Trail, 50, 100), Lucas Walsh (Addison Trail, breaststroke), sophomore Jack Burns (Willowbrook, freestyle), Jake Roucka (Willowbrook, butterfly, sprints), Jack Wentworth (Willowbrook, 500) and Matt Sawicki (Addison Trail, distance, 500). Evan Zimmerman (Addison Trail, IM) also is back.

Burns owns the team’s top times in the 50 and

100 and as well as the 200. Wentworth also recently helped out with a strong time in the 100.

Key newcomers include Thomas Holmes (Willowbrook, IM) and Eric Hoda (Willowbrook, freestyle backstroke).

“We’re getting the guys back into the shape they should be in,” said Wahlgren. “We’ve also come together as a team. Another thing I’ll point out is our finishes have been very strong. The guys are listening and finishing hard. That’s the difference in these relays between winning and losing. They are putting the pieces together and doing the things we ask of them.”

Wahlgren said the Downers Grove South victory provided a big boost. “We have a lot of confidence now,” he said. “We have high hopes in the conference. We will see what we can do against Hinsdale South. We would like to win the conference this year. The guys are excited about the future. I’ve always had high hopes and always imagined something like this was possible. It became a reality against Downers Grove South and now we have to keep working hard in order for it to continue.”

AT-Willowbrook competes in an invitational on Dec. 27 and returns to conference action against Proviso East on Jan. 6. In between, the team plans on getting plenty of reps in the pool.

“We usually go longer sessions over the break,’ said Wahlgren. “That’s the time where we get everybody into real good shape.”

Pettinger had a high game of 186 en route to a 494 series. Sophomore Holly Helsper had a high game of 161 and had a 446 series and junior Anna Cuccinotto had a 163 high game and a 444 series.

Tiberi, through late last week, was leading the team with a 180-pergame average. Sasenick was next at 171 and Jones had a 163 average.

“We have been really working on making high-quality shots on their first ball of the frame,” said Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen. “When we make good first shots it leads to strikes and easy spare pickups.”

Allen has been especially pleased with the progress of Sasenick, Pettinger and Jones. “Dana, Katie and Makaylah have really stepped up for us this year,” he said. “They have made a major impact at the start of the season and will only get better as the season continues.”

Allen also is thrilled with the team’s overall progress heading into the winter break. “I am extremely pleased with how the team is performing so far this year,” he said.

“Our ability to make good quality shots is helping us score better. We are very excited for the season and

we are looking at making a major impact in conference. We are very young and extremely talented. The future is very bright.”

Earlier, Willowbrook took fourth out of 30 teams at the recent Ray Maxwell Invitational hosted by Streamwood High School.

Tiberi led the Warriors with games of 225, 195, 224, 210, 180 and 157 for a total of 1,191. Tiberi was seventh individually in the tournament.

Pettinger also was strong for Willowbrook with a 1,083 six-game series. She had games of 168, 171, 189, 188, 196 and 171.

“Katie followed up Jordan’s impressive performance with one of her own,” said Allen.

Helsper had a 1,013 series with high games of 171, 166, 196 and 189. Sasenick finished with a 993 with high games of 194, 192 and 167. Jones had a 986 series with high games of 207 and 193.

Willowbrook shot 5,266 as a team.

“We bowled very well all day,” said Allen.

The Warriors led the tournament heading into the sixth game thanks to a tournament-high game of 966 in the fifth.

Fenton wrestling team off to 8-0 start

The Fenton wrestling team continues to enjoy its ride on the success train.

The Bison upped its dual-meet mark to 8-0 with recent decisive victories over Walther Christian (60-21) and Wheaton Academy (43-9).

Fenton was ranked No. 9 in Class 2A in the recent Illinois Matmen/ GEI (Go Earn It wrestling apparel) rankings.

Success for the Bison has been abundant on the individual level

as well. Junior Dylan Butts (182 pounds) and senior Angel Nava (138 pounds) both were 12-2 through late last week.

Senior Kacper Piskorz (132 pounds) was 8-0. Senior Ivan Rodriguez (195 pounds) was 10-4, while senior Nikko Castaneda (160 pounds) was 9-3. Junior Isaiah Brock (heavyweight) was 9-4, while freshman Jeremy Piskorz (120 pounds) was 8-7.

Freshman Cassinova Bateman (113 pounds) won his first two matches as a varsity wrestler recently.

Fenton also recently placed fifth out of 19 teams at the Waunakee Invitational in Wisconsin. Brock took second at heavyweight, while Butts was third at 182. Nava took third at 145, while Mencini was fourth at 138.

Castaneda was fourth at 160.

Bailon was fifth at 106. Rodriguez was fifth at 220 and Park was seventh at 195.

“We have a great group of se-

niors and juniors who love to be challenged and expect to be successful,” Fenton coach Brian Hastings said.

Mencini was ranked No. 12 by Illinois Matmen/GEI at 138 pounds and has two Top 5 tournament finishes to his credit this season. Nava earned an honorable mention placement at 145 and has two Top 3 finishes to his credit, including a title win at the Fenton invitational.

Butts was ranked No. 9 at 182 and has two Top 3 finishes, including a title win at Fenton.

Fenton competed in the prestigious Hinsdale Central invitational this past weekend. The Hinsdale Central tournament typically is considered the second-toughest tournament in the state.

Willowbrook girls basketball team defeats Hinsdale South Konrath records seven 3-pointers during two-game stretch

The Willowbrook girls basketball team notched a recent 37-21 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory against Hinsdale South.

In earlier action, the Warriors lost a 44-40 WSC Gold decision to Dis-

trict 88 neighbor Addison Trail.

Willowbrook led 7-6 after the first quarter, but trailed 22-18 at halftime. Addison Trail outscored Willowbrook 12-6 in the third quarter. Willowbrook did come back to outscore the Blazers 16-10 in the fourth quarter.

Hannah Konrath led the Warriors with 12 points to go with four rebounds. CeCe Lizasuain added nine points and four rebounds. Shannon Knudtson had eight points, as did Katelyn McCann.

Konrath hit three 3-pointers in the game and was 3-for-4 from the free-

throw line. Maureen Schmid pulled down nine rebounds. Knudtson had four steals. McCann had two steals.

In other recent competition, the Warriors lost 60-38 to Proviso East in a WSC Gold game.

Proviso led 19-5 after the first quarter and 40-12 at halftime.

Konrath led Willowbrook with 14 points. McCann had seven points, while Lizasuain had six points.

Konrath made four 3-pointers, while McCann had two. Lizasuain had six rebounds, while Sara Fitzgibbon had four rebounds.
