FPD’s ‘The Preserve’ at Oak Meadows wins Golf Digest award The December 2017 issue of Golf Digest bestowed its 2017 Green Star environmental award on the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s The Preserve at Oak Meadows for its environmental solutions by golf development.

“The Preserve at Oak Meadows, a daily-fee course in Addison, might be the most important new golf course of 2017,” said Ron Whitten, golf architecture editor at Golf Digest. “The Preserve demonstrates that a golf course can serve golfers and the greater community.”

Golf Digest instituted its Green Star award in 2009 to recognize golf facilities that “demonstrate the best in sustainable, efficient and innovative environmental practices that every golf facility could emulate.”

The recognition places The Preserve at Oak Meadows in some extraordinary company. Previous award winners include Kiawah Island Resort, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Pinehurst #2, Pasatiempo and The Rio Olympic Course.

“We are thrilled to receive this award and to provide a premier 18hole golf destination and nature preserve for the public,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “We believe The Preserve at Oak Meadows is a model for how conservation agencies can blend ecological initiatives with golf and recreation.”

Golf course architect Greg Martin, designer of The Preserve at Oak Meadows, shared his thoughts on receiving the award.

“The Forest Preserve District of

DuPage County is to be commended for having the courage to pursue this project,” he said. “Our mission was to thoughtfully integrate environmental benefit with a great golf course that could better withstand flood events. It validates our effort to integrate an exceptional golf experience with valuable environmental benefit.”

The course also recently won a Force of Nature Award from Chicago Wilderness for serving as a role model with its conservation and res-

toration efforts.

About the renovation The Preserve underwent a major two-year environmental restoration project that improved stormwater management and water quality for Salt Creek, enhanced habitat for fish and other aquatic species and a created a premier 18-hole public golf destination. It reopened for a brief preview season in late summer 2017 and has a full grand-opening season scheduled for 2018.

The property was reconfigured

to reduce flooding in nearby communities by holding an additional 20 million gallons of stormwater from Salt Creek during flood events, while also minimizing flood damage to the course. Only 15 percent of the 288 acres is dedicated to fairways, greens and teeing areas, and the number of holes was reduced from 27 to 18. In addition, 25 acres of new wetlands and 43 acres of riparian habitat were created and 13 acres along the Salt Creek corridor were restored to improve water quality

and plant and animal diversity.

Other improvements include a connection to the regional Salt Creek Greenway Trail, making The Preserve accessible to hikers, joggers and cyclists.

The Forest Preserve District and partners the DuPage River Salt Creek Workgroup and DuPage County Stormwater Management funded the restoration project. The River Prairie Group of the Sierra Club also supported the project’s initiatives.

Ray Graham’s Hanson Center floods Issue addressed by generosity of engineering company

Operated by the Ray Graham Association, the Hanson Center is known by many Burr Ridge and Hinsdale residents as a hidden gem in their community. Nestled among 12 acres on 59th and Garfield sits a garden, a new duck pond, a small barn, stable that is home to twenty therapy horses, and several buildings used for life skills training for adults with disabilities.

The Hanson Center is a Premier PATH Intl (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) accredited center that has a heated indoor riding facility, riding trails and an outdoor arena. The Therapeutic Horsemanship program provides opportunities for children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities to experience the enjoyment and therapeutic benefits of horseback riding. The program also benefits wounded veterans, those challenged with traumatic brain injury and those struggling with issues like extreme anxiety caused by PTSD. Over the past few years, environmental changes to the soil and footing on the property have presented some major drainage issues. Flooding has caused increased concern for the safety of the riders, countless volunteers who aid with lessons, and the horses them-

selves.

“Making sure that everyone is safe is always a top priority for us,” said Cathy LeBeau, coordinator of the program. “We’ve seen horses, instructors and volunteers get caught in mud well past their ankles and that’s not safe for anyone.”

Engineers from the Chicagoland based Robinson Engineering firm learned about the drainage challenges and offered to help share their expertise in an effort remedy the situation.

Knowing that the non-profit did not have the resources for a full engineering assessment, Robinson Engineering offered their consultation services pro-bono.

“We saw an amazing non-profit organization that helps so many less fortunate people of the area and; we couldn’t say no,” said Sean Kelly, Senior Project Manager at Robinson.

Because of the help from Robinson Engineering, the Hanson Center now has a plan in place to address five main areas affected by flooding/poor drainage and gave us the ability to search grant funding. Work on phase one of the plan is tentatively scheduled for early Spring 2018.

The Hanson Center is operated by the Ray Graham Association that supports nearly 2,000 children and adults with disabilities through residential, recreational, employment, life skills and family support services. Visit raygraham.org for more information.

Forest Preserve District of DuPage County wins Green Fleet Leadership Award The Chicago Area Clean Cities Coalition has given the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County a Green Fleet Leadership Award for adopting alternative-fuel and green-fleet technologies.

The Forest Preserve District was recognized for having the greatest decrease in petroleum use in the E85 gasoline category. It reduced its use of petroleum-based fuels by the equivalent of 55,085 gallons of gasoline and lowered greenhouse gas emissions by 194 tons in 2016 with its use of compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, ethanol and biodiesel.

The annual awards are given to commercial or government fleets that reduce petroleum consumption and improve air quality by using cleaner-burning alternative-fuel vehicles, electric vehicles or other advanced technologies.

The Forest Preserve District was the only conservation agency to be recognized by the coalition, which is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities program.

“It is a great honor to be recognized and a testament to our staff’s hard work and progressive thinking,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

Forest Preserve District fleet manager Michael Webster said the agency’s fleet is distinct in its variety of

vehicles and focus on alternative fuels.

The District runs 125 vehicles and 172 pieces of equipment on alternative fuels and helps area municipalities reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions by allowing them to use the District’s fueling stations. The Forest Preserve District was the first of its kind in Illinois to have a fueling station with four different alternative fuels.

“The District strives to implement innovative ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and petroleum-based fuel dependency in its fleet while serving as an example of alternative fuel use,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Al Murphy, District 6.

In spring 2017, the District was recognized for the sixth year in a row as one of the “100 Best Fleets in the Americas” and for the fourth year in a row as one of Government Fleet magazines top 50 “Leading Fleets” in the nation.

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has been connecting people to nature for more than 100 years. More than 4 million people visit its 62 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, five education centers and scores of programs each year.

Illinois ranks among Peace Corps’ top volunteer-producing states On Thursday, Dec. 14, the Peace Corps announced that the state of Illinois ranks No. 6 among states with the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers. There are 325 volunteers from the Prairie State currently serving worldwide, and 8,962 Illinoisans have served in the Peace Corps since the agency’s founding in 1961.

The Chicago metro area, which includes Chicago, Joliet and Naperville, also ranks No. 4 among metropolitan areas with the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers per 100,000 residents. There are 258 volunteers from the Windy City currently serving worldwide.

Illinois and the Chicago metro area have consistently ranked as a top volunteer-producing state and metro area respectively for five consecutive years. Earlier this year, several Illinois universities ranked among the Top 25 Peace Corps volunteer producing colleges in the country including Loyola University Chicago, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The latest pension report by Fitch Ratings reveals Illinois has the largest pension burden of all 50 states, putting the debt at $151.5 billion. The credit rating agency said the state’s unfunded pension liabilities is equal to 22.8 percent of the personal income earned by all Illinois taxpayers last year, compared with the national average of about 3 percent. In Florida — the state with the lowest pension burden — it’s 1 percent.

According to Fitch’s 2017 state pension report, Illinois’ unfunded pension debt is significantly higher than those of New Jersey ($91.8 billion), Massachusetts ($48.9 billion) and Kentucky ($32.8 billion).

Nearly all states — 46, to be exact — saw their unfunded pension burdens increase in 2016.

Joe Newton’s career coaching resume does not need to be repeated and likely will never be duplicated.

But he has another resume—the resume of life—that based on those he has coached, taught and mentored over the years, dwarfs anything the legendary coach has ever accomplished on a cross-country course during a tremendous career that spanned six decades and produced 28 state championships—a mark that likely will never come close to being approached.

Newton died in early December in Arizona at the age of 88. The Independent recently talked to a variety of individuals who knew Newton.

“All worth mentioning,” he said, “but his greatest asset was his ability to bring people together. You never forget Joe Newton after meeting Joe Newton. He touched the lives of generations of students. He will remain in our hearts forever.”

IHSA talks impact on sport, athletes The Illinois High School Association sent these remarks to the Independent from Executive Director Craig Anderson concerning Newton’s impact.

“Joe Newton’s impact on IHSA cross country and track and field is immeasurable,” said Anderson.

“There certainly are many tangible honors in Joe’s career from state championships to individual runner state titles into his enshrinement in the NFHS National High School Hall of Fame. But the impact he had on the student-athletes he coached and the standard of excellence he set for not only his teams, but those who they competed against always will

Recalling Foot Locker championships Orland Park Sandburg High School boys cross-country coach John O’Malley was in San Diego at this year’s Foot Locker Championships (a race York runners have competed in many times) when he learned of Newton’s death.

“Joe Newton’s influence is so greater than simply coaching York runners, which in itself is a tremendous legacy,” he said. “Joe Newton pushed Illinois to be greater. He pushed the United States to be better.

He established a standard of excellence. But what’s maybe most significant to me is that he facilitated an environment where the sport of cross country matters. Those two boys from Illinois who were leading the Foot Locker this year (Sandburg’s Dylan Jacobs won the national title) doesn’t happen without Joe Newton.

And for the thousands of teenagers looking for a place to matter, Joe Newton created a place for that to happen, not just for students at York but for students everywhere. That’s far more important than those trophies sitting in the cases in Elmhurst.

I’m very grateful for the opportunity to coach in an environment that coach Newton established.”

A long history for Charlie Kern Current York boys cross-country coach Charlie Kern Sr. recalled his first encounter with Newton as a young student teacher at York.

“I first met Mr. Newton in front of the school as the team was running around the circle drive,” he said. “I was 24, but nervous to the point of sickness to address the man whose shadow extended all the way to my hometown in New York. I had secured a student-teaching position for the fall of 1993 and was hoping to assist the cross-country team. Knowing that I had to ask the man who wrote the book on high-school cross-country and motivation if I can help him was, in my mind, folly, but perhaps he would be kind enough to let me perform some lowly task and I could soak up as much as I could.

“Walking from a distant parking lot toward him was an exercise in courage. My heart was pounding and my legs were weak. I repeatedly practiced my speech, making changes along the way. Once I made it to the steps outside the gym, his glare was focused and directly on me. He looked over the top of his glasses and was waiting for me to speak. I immediately fumbled my words, botched the speech and watched his face contort with a combination of amusement, compassion and disdain. Needing to save face, I cut to the chase and said, ‘I will be student-teaching in the fall and was wondering if I could

Illinoisans are a giving bunch. In fact, no state sees a higher share of its population donate money to charity, according to a WalletHub study released in November. That’s something to be proud of.

But there’s a difference between giving thanks and getting played.

And when it comes to the largest tax Illinoisans pay—property taxes— they’re made to be suckers. Political leaders have taken advantage of their generosity. And now the deck is stacked against reform at a time when relief could not be more crucial.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the powers granted to government worker unions. Wonder why Illinois property taxes are so high? This outof-whack power balance has a lot to do with it.

Government worker unions in Illinois enjoy unlimited scope in bargaining subjects, no limits on the length of most contracts, and the power to shut it all down if they don’t get what they want.

Taken together, that’s a toxic trio.

Every neighboring state has taken steps to rein in at least one of those powers. Illinois is a laggard in this regard—the last holdout.

First, the “right” to shut down government services. All of Illinois’ neighboring states—Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa and Wisconsin—prohibit strikes for most or all government workers. The reason is simple: Government worker strikes are not the same as strikes in the private sector. Instead of hurting the party on the other side of the negotiating table, innocent residents reliant on services take the hit.

But in Illinois, a “right to strike” is actually enshrined in state law. The result? Since 2012 alone, the Chicago Teachers Union has gone on strike or threatened to go on strike at least four times. In May, faculty at the University of Illinois-Springfield walked out on students a week before finals. And in February, Illinois’ largest government worker union, which represents 35,000 state workers, authorized a strike should Gov. Bruce Rauner implement a contract the union didn’t like.

Because there are virtually no limits on the length of contracts or what may be bargained for, this strike power is a cudgel for outrageous deals at taxpayers’ expense.

Just look at what happened in Palatine. Local taxpayers are currently on the hook for a 10-year teacher contract, locking in years of pay hikes while private sector incomes

And in Chicago, Inspector General Joe Ferguson divulged earlier this year that the city “doesn’t need to employ” 200 motor truck drivers who secured a 10-year deal in 2007, in advance of the city’s failed 2016 Olympics bid.

That’s really the crux of the issue.

Decade-long deals can’t account for changes in technology or economic conditions.

They also prevent accountability for elected officials. Voters can oust politicians, but those contracts will remain on the books for years, regardless of who’s in charge.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana and Michigan all restrict the length of collective bargaining agreements for some or all government workers.

Most of Illinois’ neighbors also protect taxpayers by limiting the subjects over which government worker unions can negotiate. But in the Land of Lincoln, government worker unions can bargain over almost anything related to a worker’s employment.

This harms taxpayers in two ways.

The first is in legal costs. It can take eons to iron out all the details of the contract. Illinois state workers have been without a contract for more than two years as negotiations, and now court proceedings, have dragged on.

Second, a virtually unlimited range of negotiable subjects means taxpayers are often on the hook for perks that most of them wouldn’t expect in private sector jobs. A contract between the city of Kankakee and the Office and Professional Employees International Union, for example, mandates that employees get a day off for their birthdays.

In Wisconsin and Iowa, most government worker unions negotiate over base wages. That’s it.

So if Illinois lawmakers are soliciting gift ideas for their constituents, they only need to take a peek over the state border. Balancing the scales at the bargaining table is an essential step in fixing the property tax problem.

National anthem brings teams together High school sporting events are often inspirational. The athletes on the field, court, track or ice give it their all and are beyond fun to watch. For many of them, this is the pinnacle of their sports careers and they deserve our attention and respect. Seldom, however, does the crowd take the spotlight.

This is exactly what happened at a local game in my small town, but I believe it could happen anywhere, at any time. I’m just glad I got to be a part of it.

As is the custom, the national anthem is the traditional start to many high school activities. It puts a serious and thoughtful beginning to whatever

game the players came to play and the crowd came to watch. As the anthem has made headlines recently, it makes most of us more cognizant of its meaning and how we choose to demonstrate our own participation in this established national practice.

We all have differing views on the recent headlines, which is our right,

and I’m not going to address the anthem issues that have been in the news. But I do want to relate something that happened at a high school event I recently attended. Because, in a word, it made me proud.

Before our game the anthem began.

It was piped over a speaker system – a taped version, no real, live performance. But it was all good.

My husband and I were standing directly behind the flag. He stood with his right hand over his heart, as is his custom. I stood at attention, singing silently along to the words.

“Oh say can you see, by the dawn’s early light…”

And then, right after, “through the

perilous fight,” the speaker system went unexpectedly silent.

You can imagine, the absence of sound in a situation like this feels huge. Nevertheless, I continued singing, albeit silently, just mouthing the words. (I have been told my voice is best left silent, unfortunately.) “O’er the ramparts we watched…”

And then, softly, ever so softly, I heard voices in cadence with my mouthed lyrics. They were subdued at first, but gained momentum with each word. I joined their forces – as loud as I dared (given my bad voice and all).

“Were so gallantly streaming.” This part was barely audible. And then things got louder.

“And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there…” The crowd picked up where the sound system quit. It was nothing less than magical and miraculous and energizing.

By the end, the entire crowd was participating and it was one of the most powerful spur of the moment events I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of. We were from differing high schools, each hoping for our own team to win, but when it came down to the national anthem, we all joined forces and completed the chorus when

The holiday season is often a joyous time with family and friends.

Sadly, the increase in festivities too often leads to an increased number of impaired drivers on our roads. To help keep roads safe, state and local law enforcement, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will be looking for impaired drivers during a special Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement detail from Dec. 18 to Jan. 2.

According to the NHTSA, 37,461 people were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2016, and 28 percent (10,497) of those fatalities occurred in a crash in which a driver had a blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) at or above the limit of 0.08.

In December, from 2012 to 2016, a total of 14,472 people lost their lives in motor vehicle traffic crashes, and again 28 percent, or 3,995, died in a crash that involved a driver with a BAC of .08 or higher.

Most of these senseless vehicle crashes could have been avoided if the impaired driver had simply not gotten behind the wheel.

Driving impaired by alcohol, drugs or both is a deadly choice that too often carries deadly consequences. The choice should always be simple: Never drive impaired.

Choosing to drive impaired by alcohol, drugs or both is selfish and reckless.

For this reason, law enforcement throughout Illinois will be out in full force looking for impaired drivers.

Anyone caught driving while impaired by alcohol, drugs or both faces a driving-under-the-influence charge with the potential for significant legal and financial consequences.

With a DUI, a driver faces jail time, the loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates and other expenses including attorney fees, court costs, car towing, repairs and lost wages. There is also the humiliation and consequences of telling family, friends and employers of the arrest.

As you head out from your holiday parties, always remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Plan for a sober ride home ahead of time and never risk driving after drinking or using any kind of impairing drugs or substances.

DuPage County created the Human Services Grant Fund to assist organizations that serve County residents in need. This year, the fund will distribute $1 million to grant recipients.

The grants are available to organizations that help families achieve independence, ensure the protection of children and other vulnerable residents and maximize prevention opportunities to strengthen families’ well-being and stability. In the previous grant year, more than 88,760 people received assistance. The average grant award in 2017 was $16,700.

The Human Services Grant Fund application is now a web-based program. For access to the portal, attendance at one of the mandatory meetings is required.

Naperville woman sentenced to natural life in murder of two children DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that Judge Robert Miller had sentenced Elzbieta Plackowska, 45, formerly of Naperville, to natural life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2012 stabbing death of her son, 7-year-old Justin and a 5-year-old girl she was babysitting, Olivia Dworakowski, also of Naperville.

On September 27, 2017, Miller found Plackowska guilty of the double murder following a two-and-one-half-week-long bench trial. In all, Miller found Plackowska guilty of ten counts of First Degree Murder and two counts of Aggravated Cruelty for stabbing to death two family dogs. Per statute, she faced a mandatory sentence of natural life in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition, Miller also sentenced Plackowska to an additional two years in prison for the killing of the two dogs, Niki and Tootsie.

On October 30, 2012, at approximately 11 p.m., Naperville police officers were dispatched in response to a report of a woman who had just been robbed. Upon their arrival, officers found Plackowska at the residence covered in blood.

At approximately this same time, Naperville police officers responded to a call from Marta Dworakowski requesting help in locating her daughter Olivia, whom Plackowska was babysitting.

Upon arriving at the Dworakowski residence, officers gained entrance and discovered the deceased bodies of Justin Plackowska and Olivia Dworakowski and the two family dogs. An investigation into the murders revealed that at some point in time that evening, Plackowska told the children to get ready for bed. Instead of getting ready for bed however, the children be-

gan jumping on the bed in the master bedroom.

After arming herself with a kitchen knife, Plackowska went to the master bedroom and began stabbing her son repeatedly about his entire body. She then stabbed Olivia repeatedly throughout her body as well and killed the two family dogs. Plackowska then drove to a family friend’s home. Plackowska has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since the murders.

“Justin and Olivia were two beautiful children who never got the chance to grow up,” Berlin said. “They never got the chance to experience all that life has to offer or fulfil their childhood dreams. … I continue to offer my sincerest condolences to Justin’s and Olivia’s surviving family members as they move forward in their lives without the love and joy these two precious children once provided.”

I am fortunate to say I have worked directly with Mr. Newton and have been doing so since 1993.

“The lessons he taught his athletes also were learned or relearned by his assistant. Mr. Newton took advantage of the opportunity to teach young men lessons that will sustain them for the rest of their lives. A winning culture was not built from trophies, but from a foundation of values that insures success for life.

The Newtonisms and references continue to rattle around in the heads of athletes from 1956 to 2015 and guide the lives of young and old me. In this way, Mr. Newton has become larger than life. He lives on in his students and athletes and thus becomes immortal.”

2011 through 2014. He now has a triple major of sports management, business analytics and management information systems at Ohio University.

“Mr. Newton was the embodiment of someone you wanted to be,” said Baker. “He was a strong leader, but at the same time he gave all the kids on the team the care and support they needed to succeed. He was so many things to so many people. He was a great father, coach and a great mentor to everybody who got to know him.”

Baker said Newton compiled quite the stack of papers over the years.

“Most workouts had some kind of time component to them,” he explained. “At the end of practice every athlete would give me their times from the workouts and I would write them down. Newton kept track of every workout on a sheet. All the notes form the pre-practice meetings would be on there as well. He put that all in a file and every year he had a file and then I would organize those files later. Mr. Newton’s office wasn’t that large so we had to be smart about how we used the space.

Former runner recalls four straight state championships Brian Collins was part of four straight York state-championship teams in the early 1980s and still holds Newton in the highest regard.

“Other than my parents, nobody had more of an impact on me,” he said. “He paid attention to everybody. All he cared about was you being successful. That’s what made all the toughness about him bearable.

He truly cared about you and wanted you to succeed. It’s remarkable what he did.”

Collins said he most looked forward to Newton’s pre-practice remarks. “That’s the thing I looked forward to the most,” he said. “Before practice he would have these team meetings and he would tell a different story or something you should pay attention to as a young man.

He would talk about things such as Vince Lombardi, a guy who had run for him, or something that had real meaning at the end of it. I looked forward to it every time.”

Collins also recounted Newton’s process of checking in and checking out for the day. “He gave each guy a nickname that usually was different than your name. And there were 200 kids. You had to be on time. If you were late twice you were kicked off

the team, it didn’t matter who you were. He greeted you by name when you checked in and then you shook his hand when you checked out. He looked you in the eye and said great work or not so great work. He did that with every single guy. Whenever I went back to visit he would remember my nickname, mine was Nick. He would remember races and times from 30 years ago. He cared about you and always was very present when talking to you.”

Hedman recalls fondest Newton memory Ron Hedman ran for Newton from 2007-2010 and went on to a collegiate career at Wisconsin-Parkside.

One of his favorite Newton memories came during a West Suburban Conference Silver Division championship meet.

“Senior year we had just beaten Oak Park-River Forest who was No. 1 in the state and ranked fifth in the country,” he said. “At the time in the conference you had to win the duals and win the conference meet. Mr. Newton tells us, ‘I’m going to say a prayer for you boys now. Please don’t let them suck today. That lightened the mood. We won the conference that day.”

Hedman said negative thinking was foreign to Newton. “He meant the world to me,” he said. “Every day I went to practice there he was, a guy always there to cheer you up if you had a bad day with classes or something personal was going on with life.

He took the time to see how you were doing. He always was willing to help others. He helped me get into college with recruiting and with jobs. He always wanted his guys to succeed in life no matter what it is. I don’t think there is a more impact person doing what he did on a daily basis.”

Making Newton immortal Kern Sr., like many others have mentioned, pointed to Newton knowing everybody’s name on the team, which most years numbered in the 150-175 range.

“He tried to say every kid’s name every practice,” he said. “Everybody knew the coach’s eyes were on them.

Everybody got the same treatment whether it’s the No. 1 guy or the last guy across the finish line. Everybody was subjected to the same rules. He had such a passion for what he did.

He had a love for coaching, a love for York and a love for the kids he taught. That’s what made him stand out the most. The Greeks didn’t write obituaries. They only asked one question: Do they have passion? Nobody can argue Mr. Newton didn’t have passion. He was passionate. He made cross-country cool. Sometimes there were 200 kids in the program, more recently it has been 150-175.

Other programs don’t have that. Other people wanted to replicate that and make it cool at their school. He made cross-country cool and a legitimate sport, not something used as training time for basketball or wrestling or other sports. When I was in New York, he cast a shadow all the way out here. He was larger than life. He left a mark on so many people.

“We make him immortal by living out the lessons he taught all of us.”

Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team off to strong start Squad records wins against Leyden and Downers Grove South

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook co-op boys swimming team got off to a hot start by winning its first two West Suburban Conference Gold Division meets.

AT-Willowbrook recently won 4846 over Leyden and 101-82 against Downers Grove South at the varsity level. At the frosh-soph level, AT-Willowbrook defeated Leyden 50-44 and lost to Downers Grove South 93-69.

At the varsity level, AT-Willowbrook is 2-1 overall.

This year, Willowbrook returns seniors Phillip Campbell (diving, Willowbrook), Jack Wentworth (backstroke, Willowbrook), Jacob Grygo (50, 100, Addison Trail), Mikey Stycharz (100, 500, Addison Trail) and Lucas Walsh (butterfly, breaststroke, Addison Trail), along with juniors Jack Burns (50, 100, Willowbrook) and Evan Zimmerman (IM, backstroke, Addison Trail) and sophomore Thomas Holmes (breaststroke, Willowbrook).

Key newcomers to the team include seniors Patrick Florey (freestyle,

Willowbrook) and Zack Thomspon (backstroke, Willowbrook), sophomore Aidan Nichols (breaststroke, Willowbrook) and freshmen Kyle Haake (backstroke, freestyle, Willowbrook), Sean Pienkos (freestyle, Willowbrook) and Salvatore Ciaccio (butterfly, Addison Trail).

At the Rolling Meadows invitational, AT-Willowbrook placed ninth.

The 200 medley relay team of Haake, Holmes, Zimmerman and Grygo took fourth.

Burns was sixth in the 50, while the 400 relay team of Walsh, Grygo, Zimmerman and Burns took fifth. The 200 medley relay team of Wentworth, Nichols, Burns and Holmes placed sixth.

The 100 free relay team of Haake, Marco Chaidez, Burns and Grygo won the event.

In the win against Leyden, the 200 medley team of Zimmerman, Nichols, Haake and Grygo took first. Wentworth won the 200, while Florey was third. Zimmerman won the IM. Burns was second in the 50 followed by Grygo in third.

By Mike Miazga Correspondent The Willowbrook girls basketball team notched a 61-42 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory recently against District 88 neighbor Addison Trail.

Willowbrook led 12-7 after the first quarter and 23-19 at halftime.

The Warriors turned things up in the third quarter, outscoring Addison Trail 25-12 before holding a 13-11 edge in the fourth quarter.

Katelyn McCann led Willowbrook with 22 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists. CeCe Lizusian had 18 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Emma Barrington finished with nine points and two steals, while Jayla Smith had a strong game with six points, nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals.

“We’ve been very up and down so far this season,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell late last

week. “We have good games and bad games. We’ve won two games and have had some other good efforts.

We’re still getting better.”

In the Addison Trail game, Harrell was pleased with how his team distributed the ball. “We had 22 assists,” he said. “The best thing we did was we moved the ball well. We shot a lot better. Sometimes you make yourself feel better by saying the other team’s defense makes you squirrely.

In some of our games it hasn’t been like we have been missing jump shots. Shooting has been an issue.

Against Addison Trail we shot the ball a lot better at 39 percent which is very good for us. We need to be around there for us to be successful as a team.”

Earlier, Willowbrook lost to Proviso East in WSC Gold play. “We ran into a Proviso East juggernaut,” said Harrell. “We’re always looking to win. The girls are positive and playing well at this point. We’re going to keep looking to improve going forward.”

McCann continues to play well for the Warriors. “She’s always in double digits,” said Harrell. “She’s had a couple big games with 25 and 22 points. She accepts the idea that she

IC Catholic Prep’s Tyrrell reaches 100 career wins

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball coach TJ Tyrrell put himself in some elite program company recently.

The Knights’ 43-27 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win over Fenton was the 100th career coaching win for Tyrrell at IC Catholic Prep.

Through late last week, Tyrrell sported a 100-53 career mark in his six seasons at the helm. He’s the third coach in program history to earn 100 wins. Tyrrell is 10 wins away from moving into second place all-time in program history and 43 wins away from breaking long-time former coach Darren Howard’s 143-win record. Tyrrell sports the highest winning percentage of any IC Catholic Prep boys basketball coach with 100 wins.

“I was excited to reach the milestone,” said Tyrrell. “I’ve had a lot of good staff members along the way. It’s not all me that deserves the recognition for the 100th win. I’m proud and

thankful to have reached it in a relatively quick amount of time.”

Tyrrell, an IC Catholic Prep graduate, is in his 16th season as a coach in the program. He was an assistant on Howard’s staff for 10 years before being named head coach.

“I stayed loyal and enjoyed being part of the community at IC and I’m proud of being an alum,” he said.

“Since getting the head job we’ve had a good amount of success with the three conference championships in five years and the regional titles. We’ve had good players athletically and who are good people who have come through the program. I’m proud to have coached these guys.”

Tyrrell lauded Howard for his tutelage. “Darren was a great mentor and gave me my first opportunity to coach high-school basketball,” he said.

“When I graduated from college and finished my playing career at Dominican I went into the business world at that point. I wasn’t sure I would get

into coaching. It was not my intention.

A friend of mine was a coach and was telling me stories about connecting with kids and giving back. I reached out to the school and still have a few connections there. I told them I wanted to help out and volunteer and give back to a sport I love. Now 16 years later I’m still here. I went from sophomore assistant and then got an opportunity to be a varsity assistant and then Darren put me as the head freshman coach. I told him I didn’t know if I was ready to have my own team. He told me I was ready. We did very well at the freshman level and then I got promoted to sophomore coach and varsity assistant.

I never thought about leaving for another coaching opportunity or to be a head coach somewhere else. I always wanted to be the head coach at IC and I’m happy to be here.”

Against Fenton, Kevin Cheng had 16 points, while Khali Saunders and Nico Gaudio each had nine points.

“Fenton battled,” said Tyrrell. “It

was a little bittersweet going against (Fenton’s) Amari Reed who had been with us the last three years. We were losing at halftime and we made some adjustments and switched from a zone press, which dropped into a half-court zone to a man-to-man and that made a difference. We struggled with their pressure and made some adjustments to the lineup and personnel and that created opportunities. We also cut down on our own turnovers.”

Tyrrell was impressed with his team’s defense down the stretch. “We held them to two points in the fourth quarter, which was a layup in the last few seconds of the game,” he said. “We held them to five points in the second half. That’s pretty impressive even though we did not have the best first half. The guys came back out focused and made adjustments and hit big shots.

Kevin Cheng hit some big free throws and outside jumpers. Khali Saunders found opportunities under the rim.

Nico Gaudio had a big layup down the

stretch. We started letting our defense dictate our offense. We were getting deflections and getting in transition, which we like to play. I was very happy to see us get that win and the icing on the cake was it being the 100th.”

IC Catholic Prep then dropped a 5651 contest to Glenbard South in MSC Blue play. After playing to a 13-13 tie after one and a 27-27 stalemate at halftime, Glenbard South outscored the Knights 17-16 in the third quarter and 12-8 in the fourth quarter.

Cheng had 18 points for the Knights.

Gaudio had 13 points, while Kris Askew had 10 points and Saunders added eight points. Askew made two 3-pointers, while Cheng made one. The loss put IC Catholic Prep at 6-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The Knights played Illiana Christian earlier this week and face Wheaton Academy at home Friday. IC Catholic Prep and Westmont co-host a Christmas tournament where it will play Elmwood Park in the first round.

Section 4. The officials and officers of the Village are hereby authorized to undertake actions on the part of the Village as contained in the Agreement to complete satisfaction of the provisions, terms or conditions stated therein.

Section 5. The Village Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to publish a copy of this Resolution at the first opportunity following its passage and approval in a newspaper published within the Village.

Section 6. If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Resolution shall be held invalid, the invalidity thereof shall not affect any other provision of this Resolution.

Section 7. All ordinances, resolutions, motions or orders in conflict with this Resolution are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict.

Section 8. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately after its passage and publication as required by law.

Willowbrook girls bowling team continues to roll Helsper, Sasenick and Jones leading the way for Warriors

The Willowbrook girls bowling team has continued its strong play by getting off to a 3-0 start in West Suburban Conference action.

The Warriors were recent winners over District 88 neighbor Addison Trail at both the varsity and junior-varsity levels.

Holly Helsper led the Warriors with a 611 series, while Brianna Bryant had a 604 series.

Bryant also had the high game at 241.

Willowbrook also took second at the recent Streamwood invitational. Dana Sasenick led the team with an 1,151 series, which placed her third individually among the field.

Through late last week, Helsper, a junior, was leading the team with a 184 average.

Sasenick, a senior, and Makaylah Jones, a sophomore, both were averaging a 180.

Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen had high praise for the recent performances of Sasenick, Bryant and Helsper in particular, starting with Sasenick.

“Dana has stepped up this year and has really taken a leadership role for the team,” he said. “Dana has been not only bowling good

Fenton wrestlers continue to excel

The wins keep piling up for the Fenton wrestling team.

The Bison were a perfect 6-0 through their first six dual meets of the season. That mark increased the team’s regular-season dual-meet winning streak to 37.

Fenton also fared well in a pair of recent invitationals it hosted. The Bison hosted their annual Weiss Invitational and also headed to the Waunakee invitational held in Wisconsin.

At the Weiss invite, Fenton was barely edged out by No. 9-ranked Richards by a score of 174-170. Fenton took second out of 15 teams.

Senior Jack Butts was 8-4 through his first 12 matches. The 195-pounder took fifth at both Weiss and at Waunakee.

Senior Anthony Park, who wrestles at 170 pounds, was 5-3 through his first eight matches. He took fourth place at Weiss and was third in Wisconsin.

Seniors Carlos Mercado and Danny Sotelo both have had success at 145 pounds in the early going.

Mercado had a 7-5 record through 12 matches, while Sotelo was 7-4 through 11 matches.

Fenton recently opened up Metro Suburban Conference action and then has a triangular scheduled with Wheaton Academy and Illiana Christian.

“We are looking to continue our 37-match regular-season winning streak,” Hastings said recently.

Bison finish second at Weiss Invitational; Butts named most outstanding wrestler

The Bison were equally impressive at the Waunakee invite where they placed fifth out of 16 teams despite not having any wrestlers competing in three weight classes.

“Individually, many wrestlers have contributed to a successful start,” said Fenton coach Brian Hastings.

Senior Dylan Butts, who wrestles at 182 pounds, was 10-1 recently with nine pins. He was named the most outstanding wrestler at the Weiss invite after pinning his way through the finals, Hastings noted.

Butts then went 4-1 at Waunakee and placed third.

Sophomore Danny Ramirez, who wrestles at 132 pounds, also has gotten off to a hot start. He was 10-2 and finished third at the Weiss and placed second in Wisconsin.

Sophomore Jeremy Piskorz is at 126 pounds and was 8-2 at one point.

He had second-place finishes both at the Weiss and at Waunakee.
