Deadly fire on north side claims one life

Early morning blaze results in three injured, including two first responders

Villa Park and surrounding area fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 300 block of North Lincoln Ave. at about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15.

According to a Villa Park Police Dept. release, one person in the single-family residence was declared dead at the scene and another was transported to Elmhurst Hospital with unspecified, but nonlife threatening, injuries. Names of the victims had not been released as of press time.

Two emergency responders were also injured during the fire. Reports indicated the injured officers were among the first on the scene and suffered injuries while trying to rescue the home’s residents. Both injuries were minor and the officers were treated at the hospital and released the same day, according to Fire Dept. officials.

The Villa Park Police Dept. and the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force are investigating the cause of the fire.

Spirito! Singers perform ‘What Sweeter Music’ holiday concert

Spirito! Singers recently ushered in the Holiday Season with their 2018 Winter Concert, “What Sweeter Music.” The performance featured the Spirito! Bravura and Ragazze Ensembles, the Men of Spirito! along with an appearance by members of the Agape Ringers, Chicago’s premier handbell choir.

The concert took place on Dec. 1 & 2 at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church and played to a full house.

Spirito! also held a book drive at each concert as part of a service project for Bernie’s Book Bank, Chicago’s largest provider of books to low-income children.

“Spirito! is first and foremost a choral organization, but service is an important part of our mission,” said Mary Jean Adkins, Spirito!

Executive Director. “Each year we present a Service Award to a community member who is dedicated to service and volunteerism and we feel is a great role model for our singers.

We then perform a service project for a charity that’s important to the recipient as a thankyou. This year’s winner, Terri Hemmert of WXRT [Radio] asked that we support Bernie’s

Book Bank- and we’re really happy to oblige.”

The Ragazze Ensemble will also volunteer at Bernie’s Book Bank as part of their Spring Tour in April.

Spirito! Singers is an auditioned choir located in Chicago’s western suburbs. It’s comprised of two distinct treble ensembles of 5th grade – 12th grade girls, representing 30 communities and 61 schools. The smoke was seen for miles as a Commonwealth Edison pickup truck was engulfed in flames in the Addison swamp. The Addison Fire Department was hindered by the boggy ground and a brush truck had to be brought in from the Bloomingdale Fire Department to assist. The Ford F-150 ECO was a total loss. Commonwealth Edison high voltage power poles cross the swamp and it is believed that a lineman was inspecting the towers for damage caused by the recent blizzard when he became stuck along the power company’s right of way. About 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, the Elmhurst Public Library had to be evacuated and was placed on lockdown due to an unknown threat. Police and fire officials were on the scene immediately, some with automatic rifles, securing the area and urging drivers to avoid using the surrounding streets.

Bond set for taxi driver charged with assaulting female customer DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Robert Marshall announced last week that bond has been set for a taxi driver accused of sexually assaulting a female customer. Sandeep Arora, 44, of Naperville, appeared at a bond hearing before Judge Robert Miller who set bond at $150,000 with 10% to apply.

Arora has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault (Class X Felony), two counts of Criminal Sexual Assault (Class 1 Felony), one count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 2 Felony) and one count of Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 4 Felony.) On December 12, 2018, a $1 million arrest warrant was issued for Arora. He was taken into custody the following day.

It is alleged that on July 9, 2017, the victim left a Naperville establishment with a friend in a taxicab driven

by Arora. The victim reportedly sat in the front passenger seat of the taxicab and another individual sat in the back.

After Arora dropped off the individual

in the backseat, he drove away with the victim seated in the front of the cab. Police said Arora then sexually assaulted the woman partially ripping off some of her clothing and leaving bruises and marks on her body.

Arora reportedly pulled his taxicab over a short time later and assaulted the woman again. The woman was eventually able to free herself and run away. She called a friend and hid in some bushes while waiting for her friend to arrive. The woman went to the Naperville police the following morning. An investigation into the matter led authorities to Arora.

“These allegations are extremely disturbing and, if found guilty, Mr. Arora will find himself behind bars, unable to prey upon innocent women, for a significant amount of time,” Berlin said.

Arora’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 10, 2019 for arraignment in front of Judge Miller.

Do you know you live near a secret railroad?

[Editor’s note: Noted historian, teacher and author Glennette Tillie Turner explains the Underground Railroad Trail through Illinois in honor of the 200th anniversary of the state of Illinois.]

The Illinois Bicentennial is a catalyst for experiencing a new Sense of Place. When you travel on many of the state’s highways, railroads and waterways, you are retracing routes of the historic Illinois Underground Railroad.

If you drive along a local road, ride on Amtrak or a commuter train, or hike along a riverbank you may be in, or possibly near, a location where there was Underground Railroad activity. Thinking of this can give you a heightened sense of appreciation and connectedness to the history that may have happened there.

Before the Civil War, many roads (originally Native American trails, later stagecoach lines and eventually interstate highways), railroads and rivers that we travel today were traveled by Freedom Seekers (aka as “passengers”). The Freedom Seekers were enslaved

Africans who had escaped from bondage in the slave state of Missouri. They may have watched and waited for years for just the opportune moment to escape. Or acted on short notice if they learned that they were about to be sold.

In any event they set out for their long dangerous journey to reach Illinois and perhaps Canada. No one knows how many drowned or became victims of bitter cold, quicksand, disease, snakebites, hunger or were captured and taken back into slavery.

If they could reach and cross the Mighty Mississippi River they may have entered Illinois at Chester, Alton, Quincy, Brooklyn (aka Lovejoy) or Rock Island.

The Quincy route was called the Number One route. It passed through Mendon, Plymouth, Galesburg, Princeton and Ottawa.

Freedom Seekers who had escaped from Kentucky plantations crossed the Ohio River to reach Cairo.

Early roads and railroads led from river cities toward Chicago—the terminus of the Illinois Underground Railroad.

However, the Freedom Seekers weren’t the only people who knew Chicago was the terminus.

Slave catchers knew it too.

Because of this, rather than go into the city some Freedom Seekers turned eastward in the Calumet area and followed the Sauk Trail toward Indiana, perhaps stopping at the Jon Ton Farm near present-day Altgeld Gardens. Others went northward along the DesPlaines River through Maywood, Libertyville, Gurnee or Millburn. Still others followed Lake Michigan toward Evanston, Lake Forest, Waukegan, and other northern suburbs.

So let the Bicentennial serve as a catalyst in finding a new personal meaning in living in Illinois. As you travel the state’s highways, railroads, and waterways, take time to visit your local library or historical society. Check to see if there was Underground Railroad/ abolitionist/antislavery activity nearby. You may be pleasantly surprised and experience a new Sense of Place as the result of what you discover!

Everyone needs good work colleagues; columnist appreciates hers

As 2018 comes to a close, I would like to thank my work colleagues. They have been with me through another glorious year, and this gal could not ask for better mates. We thought about having an office party, but their offerings would be recipes and how-to videos and music and pictures of cookies.

I would be the only one eating the goodies so we decided against a potluck.

These office mates - Google, Facebook, Pandora, YouTube, and Word - are always there for me, day in and day out, any hour of the day round the clock. Truth be told, the first four are adept at keeping me distracted from my steady work partner, Word.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m grateful for their companionship. They always are at the ready with a good

joke, pun, or silly or heartwarming story. And as we all know, one leads to another. And another. And another. Before you know it, time has zipped by and it’s time for a snack.

Working from home allows me freedom and flexibility. I eat what I want when I want. I crank whatever tunes I want. I talk to who I want when I want. There is no boss over my shoulder, no overly chatty coworker in the next cubicle, and no one stinking up the breakroom with leftovers in the microware.

I have the best of all worlds.

There are people, human people, in my day too. My client meetings are sometimes in person, sometimes on the phone, and sometimes on the computer via Skype or zoom. I also spend a lot of time at my desk, just me and ever-patient Word.

If we are curious about what is going on in town this weekend, Facebook fills us in. And the all-

knowing know-it-all without being a smarty pants, Google, is trusted for queries large and small. Never has been there a coworker so knowledgeable in so many areas.

We ask this pal just about everything. From clarification on song lyrics to how long to roast brussels sprouts to the time zone in Kenya (I talked to a client in Kenya recently), The Big G is the Go-To Guy. How long will it take us to drive to Santa Claus, IN? How do I tie a bow tie? How long do I boil eggs if I pin prick them first? These colleagues have the wisdom of a bazillion grandmothers from all cultures.

Their capabilities make my life easier every day. Back when I worked in offices, I used to buy little gifties like candy and lottery

tickets for my coworkers. These current friends don’t want anything.

So how to say thank you? They helped me out with that too.

The holidays are a time for friends, family and coworkers to come together in celebration. Wherever you are — at an office party, a family member’s home or out at a bar — it is essential that you make the lifesaving choice to drive sober when the party ends. To help spread the message about the dangers of impaired driving, the Villa Park Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and nearly 200 police and sheriff’s departments across the state. The goal is simple: Get impaired drunk drivers off the roads and help save lives.

This high-visibility enforcement campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, runs Dec. 17 to Jan. 2. Law enforcement will show zero tolerance for drunk or drugged driving. We aim to drastically reduce impaired driving on our roads through an increased number of state and national messages about the dangers of impaired driving and more officers enforcing live-saving seat belt, speeding and distracted driving laws.

“We understand that during the holidays, people are running around, busily checking off items on their to-do list and attending parties,” said Sgt. James Cihak “We need our community members to slow down and remember: It’s up to them to make the smart decision to drive sober — during the holidays and all year long.

Impaired driving is a huge problem in Illinois, and, unfortunately, we’re seeing a rise in marijuana use and drugged driving, too. Stay safe and stay sober on the roads.”

Party with a plan If you plan to drink, plan for a sober driver to take you home. Is it your turn to be the designated driver? Take that role seriously — your friends are relying on you.

• Remember, it’s never OK to drive impaired by drugs or alcohol. Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage.

• Designate a sober driver, use public transportation, use a ride service, call your community’s sober ride program or opt to spend the night.

• If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact the Villa Park Police Department • Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take the keys away and help them get home safely. They’ll thank you later. The Illinois Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns are funded with federal highway safety dollars and administered by IDOT in partnership with the Villa Park Police Department and law enforcement throughout Illinois and the nation.

Bond set for man accused of Person in custody after resident vehicular hijacking in Wheaton finds bullet lodged in wall DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Wheaton Chief of Police William Murphy announced last week that bond has been set for a man charged with forcibly stealing a woman’s car from a Wheaton shopping center. Demarion Chambers, 22, of Chicago, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Robert Miller set bond in the amount of $500,000 with 10% to apply.

It is alleged that on Dec. 13, at approximately 9:07 p.m., Chambers approached an occupied vehicle parked outside the Target store located on

County Farm Road in Wheaton. It is alleged that Chambers repeatedly knocked on the window of the car and that the occupant of the car eventually opened the door at which time Chambers pulled the door open and threatened the occupant who then left the vehicle. It is alleged that Chambers entered the vehicle and fled the scene. It is further alleged that Chambers then drove to a Thornton’s gas station in West Chicago where he made two separate purchases using the victim’s credit card. An investigation conducted by the Wheaton

Police Department led to Chambers who was taken into custody from a home in Chicago without incident.

Chambers has been charged with one count of Vehicular Hijacking, a Class 1 Felony, one count of Identity Theft, a Class 3 Felony and one count of Unlawful Use of a Credit Card, a Class 4 Felony. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 7, 2019, in front of Judge Miller.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

On Friday, Dec. 14, at 6:01 p.m., the Villa Park Police Department responded to a residence located on the 500 block of South Summit Ave. subsequent to the report of a suspicious incident.

The resident had come home to find what appeared to be a bullet that had penetrated a window of the home and damaged an interior wall. No one was present in the house at the time of the incident, therefore no injuries were reported.

Over the course of the investigation, it appeared the bullet was fired from a neighboring house, police said. Attempts to speak to the occupants of the residence next door were unsuccessful at that time. Further negotiation attempts eventually resulted in the occupant surrendering peacefully. The investigation continues.

Due to the nature of the incident involving a firearm, Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (N.I.P.A.S.) was called in to assist in making contact with the occupant.

Fenton girls basketball team attempt 94 three-point shots in recent win Bison sitting at 3-3 in conference play; Hoffing, Milano and Arzola making key contributions

The Fenton girls basketball team likes to shoot from beyond the 3-point arc.

That was quite evident in the team’s recent 75-10 non-conference win in Wisconsin against St. Francis.

In that game, Fenton took 132 shots from the field, including 94 from 3-point land. The Bison pulled in 51 offensive rebounds in the contest.

Through late last week Fenton was 6-6 overall and 3-3 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

In other recent play, Fenton lost to Aurora Christian 69-65, suffered a tough 74-72 loss to Chicago Christian in overtime, and downed Elmwood Park 57-27 in a conference contest.

Through its first 12 games, Fenton is averaging 56.3 three-point attempts a game.

Fenton coach Dave Mello noted his group is zeroed in on playing team basketball. “We’re not looking at individual stats until the season is complete,” he noted. “The

girls are focused on the team. The girls are really competing at a high level. We took two of the top teams in the conference to the wire. We may not beat a lot of top teams, but these girls have no fear playing anyone.”

Mello has been pleased with the direction the team’s offense is headed. “The offense is progressing really great,” he said. “We are playing even faster than last year and are scoring about five more points a game. And that is with the running clock in the fourth quarter of a lot of our games. We have really improved getting the ball inside.

Last year it was a three or a layup in transition. Now, we also can score by getting the ball inside.”

Mello also is happy with how his team has improved on defense.

“The defense right now is as good as it was at any point last season,” he said. “They get into the press very quickly and are swarming teams in the half-court.”

Alyssa Hoffing and Ashley Milano have been key assets for Mello on the perimeter. “Whenever we need a big 3, Alyssa has been one of the girls to step up and hit the

shot,” the coach said. “Ashley is one of the main 3-point shooters.

She’s had some games with three or four makes. However, even in games when she isn’t hitting shots, she is all over the court on defense.”

Mello added Alexus Arzola has helped the Bison on both sides of the floor. “Alexus is giving us a really good presence under the basket on offense and is all over the point of our press,” he said.

Mello is a big fan of his team’s work ethic and fearlessness in general. “Their work ethic is amazing and they don’t view any challenge as being too big,” he said. “When Montini had a sudden opening in its Christmas tournament, which is the best around, we held a vote to see if they would like to play there. It was a landslide victory for accepting the challenge. Unfortunately, another team beat us to it.”

Fenton played Wheaton Academy earlier this week and will open play against Chicago Lincoln Park in the DePaul Prep holiday tournament on Saturday. The tournament continues at DePaul Prep on Dec. 26, 28 and 29.

Free guide helps Illinois consumers advocate for themselves with big utilities As a public service to the people of Illinois, the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) released a free online guide last week that clearly explains the rules that govern gas and electric companies, so consumers can advocate for themselves against the big utilities, avoid scams, and save money on their energy bills.

CUB’s Gas and Electric Guide: A handbook for residential utility customers in Illinois can be ordered at CitizensUtilityBoard.org .

It was researched and written by CUB experts who tackle thousands of complaints and questions from Illinois

utility customers each year.

“There is no other place in Illinois where you can get a detailed, easy-to-understand outline of your rights as a gas and electric customer, as well as helpful tips,” CUB Executive Director David Kolata said. “If you want to avoid scams and advocate for yourself against the big utilities, you have to educate yourself, and that’s why this handy guide should be required reading.

“This guide is meant to be a utility customer’s best friend. Nobody should feel powerless facing the big utilities.”

County to host info meetings for Human Services Grants in Jan. DuPage County will host two informational meetings in January for local nonprofit organizations interested in applying for a grant through the Human Services Grant Fund (HSGF).

The meetings will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 4 and 10:30 a.m. Jan. 10 in Room 3-500B of the DuPage County JTK Administration Building, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. Organizations must send a representative to one of the two mandatory meetings in order to apply for the grant.

DuPage created the Human Services Grant Fund to assist organizations that serve County residents in need. This year, the fund will distribute $900,000 to grant recipients.

The grants are available to organizations that help families achieve in-

dependence, ensure the protection of children and other vulnerable residents and maximize prevention opportunities to strengthen families’ well-being and stability. In the previous grant year, more than 76,856 people received assistance. The average grant award in 2018 was $16,700, with a minimum award of $3,757 and a maximum award of $44,000.

The Human Services Grant Fund is a web-based program. For access to the portal, attendance at one of the mandatory meetings is required.

Gray’s legacy leaves a bridge to the future for southern Illinois

and beyond. He exaggerated his age to 18 to enlist during World War II, Trover said.

Gray’s exaggeration, including his colorful suits, bow ties, red permed hair, and even his modes of transportation, made him stand out, giving him instant recognition.

After returning from World War II, Gray served as commander of the American Legion for the 15-county area, providing services to help reintegrate the returning soldiers.

“Having flown in the war, Kenny used his skills to pilot a helicopter around southern Illinois,” Trover said. “He later used what he saw in those counties to identify priorities to raise the standard of living for all the people of southern Illinois.”

Gray’s influence can be seen all over southern Illinois, starting with Interstate 57, part of which is now named Ken Gray Expressway in his honor. Many small towns have post offices thanks to Gray. Rend Lake is another of the “pork” projects Gray brought to southern Illinois. Rend Lake spurred economic growth when a boat factory opened nearby that offered steady employment to an area with little opportunity.

Gray sponsored infrastructure bills that helped jumpstart the growth of industry throughout his district, including in Marion, where Pepsi MidAmerica, one of the area’s largest employers, is located.

Former Mayor Bob Butler, the longest serving mayor in Illinois history, worked closely with Gray to secure federal funding that enabled Marion to grow. Butler told Trover he was “irritated” when Gray was referred to as “the Prince of Pork.”

“He was just better at it than anyone else and they couldn’t stand it,” Butler said.

Gray’s wheeling and dealing with Washington’s elite also brought the Marion Federal Penitentiary, Devil’s Kitchen Dam, Olmsted Lock and Dam, numerous federal housing projects, an expansion project for the Marion Veterans Administration Medical Center, education funding and funding for the arts.

For Gray, it was never about power or personal gain; it was always about the people. “When you came into his office, it didn’t matter if you were Democrat or Republican,” Gray-Clay said. “You were his constituent and he would help you.”

Gray was popular at home and gained respect in Washington’s inner

circles. He was frequently called upon by House leaders such as Sam Rayburn and Tip O’Neill to stand in as the speaker pro-tem. He frequently appeared in public with presidents John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan.

Gray retired in 1989. He continued to be active in the district, lending a hand as an auctioneer, appearing at various dinners and fundraisers, or offering advice to his successors.

Gray died on July 12, 2014, at age 89. He enjoyed reciting parables and poems, with one of his favorites being Allen Dromgoole’s “The Bridge Builder.”

Gray was a favorite of Rep. Sam Rayburn of Texas, who is credited as being the principal leader in guiding passage of the New Deal legislation in the House of Representatives during the 1930s.

The builder lifted his old gray tide.

This chasm, that has been naught to me, To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.

He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.”

Gray left a legacy that has become a bridge for the southern part of Illinois, one that preserves the beauty of the land but still connects the rural areas to other parts of the country.

In 1956, a little-known freshman congressman from Franklin County in southern Illinois gave his first major speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, receiving a standing ovation for his efforts.

In that speech, amateur magician Kenneth J. Gray from West Frankfort, used his skills to illustrate the “rosy” prospects of then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Interstate Highway Act. Carrying a bouquet of red roses, Gray illustrated the interference of lobbyists and special interests that he said were “killing” the program by snapping flowers off the stems until all the blossoms were gone.

At the conclusion of the speech, Gray suggested the lobbyists would fail and all would be “rosy” again, holding up the bouquet with white roses blooming from the bare stems.

In a political career that spanned 24 years in Congress, Gray was responsible for bringing nearly $7 billion in public works projects to southern Illinois.

Using earmarks on bills often referred to as “pork barrel politics,” Gray’s ability to score for his district earned him the moniker “the Prince of Pork.”

“It was a title he embraced,” said his daughter, Becky Gray-Clay. “My dad knew that those projects meant jobs for people in southern Illinois.”

In what would become an infamous interview with the Southern Illinoisan in 2008, Gray said, “They call Rend Lake pork. Yet the engineers, six years ago when there was tremendous flooding, said that because of Rend Lake, more than $100 million worth of property downstream was saved. If that is pork, pass me the plate, another heaping serving.”

Part of that quote ended up as the title of a book about Gray’s life by a pair of local authors and educators, Marleis Trover and Maxine Pyle.

“Pass the Plate: the Legend and Legacy of United States Congressman Kenneth J. Gray” tells Gray’s story via a walk down memory lane that showcases the man that Trover describes as “one of the most effective congressmen of the 20th century.”

Trover said Gray understood the most important job of a leader is to provide hope.

“Each time he showed off southern Illinois,” Trover said, “he brought more people here or he connected our area with officials in other cities.”

Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team making strides Short races are long suit for young team

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team split a pair of recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division dual meets.

AT-Willowbrook defeated Leyden and lost to Downers Grove South.

“Our numbers might be smaller this year, but we have a great group of guys to build a well-rounded team with,” said AT-Willowbrook assistant coach Jen Burns.

Burns was the team’s head coach last season while current head coach Neil Wahlgren took a year off to complete his degree. Wahlgren is back this season.

AT-Willowbrook is coming off a 2017-2018 season where it took third in the WSC Gold and ninth at the sectional. The team also took first at the Shepard invitational.

“As my first year as head coach, I was most proud of that finish,” said Burns. “We were behind going into the last two events and the guys really dug down and brought home a vic-

tory. No one else loves to race more than us.”

Back for AT-Willowbrook this season are seniors Jack Burns and Evan Zimmerman. Burns, who does his schooling at Willowbrook, was second in the conference in the 50 and third in the 100 a year ago. Addison Trail’s Zimmerman was third in the conference in the 200 IM. Both swimmers were part of the AT-Willowbrook 200 free relay team that took third at the sectional.

Juniors Marco Chaidez (Addison Trail) and Eric Hoda (Willowbrook) both are back after injuries sidelined them last year. Sophomore Sean Pienkos (Willowbrook) also is back “and has been working hard during the off-season to start strong this year,” Burns noted.

Addison Trail freshman Michael Niemirski is a key newcomer. “Michal has been working really hard at practice and has added some depth to our team,” said Burns.

Burns noted freshman Matthew Burrow has experience from being on

a dive team in the past and has been willing to try diving in high school.

“We are a young team, but we have several people who are good at multiple events so we can try swimmers out in different areas to see how they race,” said Burns.

Burns said AT-Willowbrook continues to push forward despite having no official home pool. Burns credits a pair of local youth swimming programs with helping swimmer development prior to high school.

“Without a pool, it is hard to find pool space for our team,” said Burns.

“Trying to find pools to (practice) in is even more challenging. Our guys swim on multiple teams in the offseason and enjoy racing against each other. The Villa Park Mariners and Addison Frogs summer teams, through the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference, have really provided

most of our talent.”

Burns said right now AT-Willowbrook is thriving in the sprint events.

“We have limited access to pool space and many of our athletes play other sports in high school, too. They have a good fitness base, but do not train in the pool twice a day all year long. I also think this group loves to race in anything that lasts less than a minute. It is quick, fun and exciting to watch.”

Burns, Zimmerman, Pienkos, Chaidez and Hoda all are competing for top relay positions. “Some of our freshmen and sophomores are right at their heels, too,” said Burns.

Burns won the 50 at the team’s first invite of the season at Rolling Meadows. “Jack is hoping to have a great season focusing on the 50 and 100 free,” said Burns. “He has been training in the off-season to prepare for his

The Addison Trail girls basketball team recorded a pair of recent wins against Morton and West Chicago.

In a 47-41 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win against Morton, Serena Gilliam led all scorers with 22 points.

“We played really well,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Schader. “Serena did a really nice job. It definitely was a big win for us. We didn’t beat them last year.”

In a 47-35 WSC Gold loss to Hinsdale South, Gilliam led the way with 17 points. “We struggled to score,” said Schader. “Hinsdale South has a freshman who was ridiculous and had 26 points.”

The Blazers also scored a 41-12

non-conference win against West Chicago. Gilliam and Mia Johnson each had 10 points.

In a 51-36 WSC Gold loss to District 88 neighbor Willowbrook, the Blazers were down nine points at halftime. “We struggled to score here,” said Schader. “It’s been an issue for us all year. Willowbrook beat Proviso East at Proviso East.

They are tough.”

Quiana Birmingham, a freshman, led the Blazers with 15 points.

Addison Trail also lost 56-21 to Downers Grove South in WSC Gold action. “We were blown out,” said Schader. “We didn’t play well.

Downers has a senior going to Colgate. She had 25 points.”

Zimmerman’s focus is on the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. “Evan is looking to finish strong as well,” said Burns.

Pienkos provides versatility to the team. “Sean worked hard this fall to prepare for his high-school season,” said Burns. “He has been swimming really well and we have been using him for our 200 and 500 free events.

We also can use him in our sprint events.”

Burns said one aspect of the team she enjoys seeing is the camaraderie, especially with swimmers from two different high schools coming together to form one team. “These guys see each other in the summer on various teams, work together as lifeguards, join club teams together and are a great group of individual athletes,” she said.

Willowbrook also downed Morton 63-30. The Warriors led 17-5 after the first quarter and 34-11 at halftime.

Dasbach had eight points, nine rebounds and five steals. Emma Barrington had seven rebounds. Willowbrook shot 42.6 percent from the field and scored 27 points off Morton turnovers.

“Defensively we are not doing a bad job for the most part,” he said.

“Offensively, handling pressure has not been an issue for us,” said Schader. “We have three girls who can handle the ball and do a nice job against pressure. We like to push it a fair amount. Teams that have pressured us have backed off when it’s not working. Our big thing is we are struggling to score. We’re not knocking down a lot of shots. The good thing is we have been working on our shooting the last two weeks and hopefully that will start clicking soon.”

Schader said confidence has helped Gilliam in her game. “Serena’s shots are falling for her,” he said. “She’s had some nice games.

She’s more comfortable out there and does a nice job on defense and a good job offensively. She’s had some more confidence lately and she’s hitting more shots because of it.”

Schader also lauded the play of Karime Martinez, Angelina Carreras, Johnson and Birmingham.

“Karime does a lot of little things for us,” he said. “Angelina handles the ball for us. Mia Johnson is doing a nice job rebounding. Quiana is a freshman who is playing well. Her and Serena are doing a good amount of scoring for us. We have other kids doing nice things. We’re playing nine kids who are getting decent minutes for us.”

Willowbrook girls gymnastics team fifth at Addison Trail invitational Freshman Placek takes third in all-around scoring

The Wilowbrook girls gymnastics team capped off the 2018 portion of its schedule by placing fifth at the Addison Trail Winter Tumbleland invitational in Addison.

Willowbrook finished with a team score of 118.15, which included a 32.9 on the vault, a 29.2 on floor, a 28.2 on balance beam and a 27.85 on bars.

Freshman Tess Placek took third on vault with a 9.00 and ended up finishing 11th in the all-around scoring.

Junior Karlie Wilson tied for 18th on vault with an 8.2.

On bars, Wilson was 14th with a score of 7.15. Sophomore Riley Wieringa was 19th with a 7.2 and Placek took 20th with a 7.15.

Placek was 12th on beam with a score of 7.55, while senior Caitlyn Owen was 16th with a 7.1 score.

Placek took 14th on floor with an 8.00 and

Wilson tied for 18th in the event with a 7.7.

In earlier action, Willowbrook dropped a 122.85-119.3 West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest to Hinsdale South.

Placek won the vault with a 9.35, while Wilson finished with a 7.65 score. Placek was second on bars at 7.3, while Wilson was third at 7.2. Placek was third on beam at 7.3, while Owen was fourth at 7.2. Placek tied for first on floor with an 8.5, while Wilson tied for fourth with an 8.2.

Placek won the all-around competition with a 32.45, while Wilson was fifth at 29.85.

Willowbrook also lost 136.65-118.6 to Downers Grove South in WSC Gold action.

Placek was third on vault at 8.7, while Wilson scored an 8.2. Wilson tied for fourth on bars with a 7.85, while Placek scored a 7.7. Placek was fifth on beam at 7.35, while Wilson scored a 7.05 there. Placek was sixth on floor with an 8.1, while Wilson finished with a 7.7. Placek was fifth in the all-around

competition with a 31.85. Wilson finished at 30.8.

“The team is working hard on the team concept coach (Andy) Isaacson and I have been installing in them the last year,” said Willowbrook coach Deanna Zuchowski.

“We have a long break until our next dual meet (Jan. 8 against Leyden). The girls already have started making their checklists of what they want to accomplish in the next few weeks. We are slowly adding difficulty to every routine to assist with our scores. Once the girls start hitting full sets, I think that will be the real accomplishment of the season.”

Zuchowski noted seniors Caitlyn Owen and Autumn Palacios have done well in leadership roles thus far. “Caitlyn and Autumn have been working so hard in the gym every day that the rest of the girls are noticing,” she said. “They are asking them questions regarding tricks they complete to how they are doing in school. Each of these girls has so

much talent in and out of the gym. They are great assets to have around.”

On the JV front, the Warriors were 91.1590.8 winners against Hinsdale South in WSC Gold action.

On vault, Karen Cruz took third with a 7.250, while Alyssa Lorann was fourth at 7.00. On Bars, Cruz and Heidi Helsper tied for second with 5.3s. Lorann was first on beam at 7.1, while Dominique Crowe was second at 6.1. Lorann took second on floor at 6.9, while Helsper was fifth at 6.2. Lorann won the all-around competition with a 24.9 score. Helsper was second at 23.7.

Willowbrook’s JV also dropped a 112.770.2 decision to Downers South in WSC Gold competition. Lorann and Helsper each went 6.9 on the vault. Helsper had a 6.1 on bars, while Lorann and Helsper each had 5.3s on beam. Helsper had a 5.6 on floor, while Lorann was at 5.5. Helsper had a 23.9 score in the all-around, while Lorann was at 21.6.

Account manager accused of stealing from elderly customers Woman gets four years for allegedly taking $328,000

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Dec. 10 that a former trust account manager accused of stealing $328,000 from three customers has been sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Christine Lange, 48, appeared in Court in front Judge Robert Miller, who handed down the sentence.

On August 22, 2018, Lange entered a plea of guilty to one count of Theft Between $100,000-$500,000, a Class 1 Felony.

Lange was employed as an account executive at Trust Company of Illinois (TCI) located in Downers Grove. In her position with TCI, she had access to customers’ bank accounts. From Sept. 12, 2012, through June 9, 2016, Lange reportedly transferred money from the bank accounts of three TCI customers to her own personal bank accounts. Lange performed these illegal transfers of funds on 84 occasions totaling $328,000. Her scheme came to light when a vic-

tim alerted both the Downers Grove Police Department and TCI. The victims in this case were all in their early 90s.

“The crimes Christina Lange committed against three elderly women are despicable,” Berlin said.

“Her simple greed caused unimaginable hardship to her victims who relied on that money for their retirement and everyday living expenses.

Unfortunately, the elderly can at times be seen as an easy target when it comes to financial crimes.”

On July 30, 2017, Lange was taken into custody and spent ten days in the County Jail until posting the necessary 10%, or $25,000, of her $250,000 bond. She was taken off the floor in court today to immediately begin serving her sentence.

In addition to her prison sentence, Lange was also ordered to pay $328,000 in restitution to TCI who covered the victims’ losses.

Lange will be required to serve 50% of her sentence before being eligible for parole.

Student charged with threatening school in Wheaton DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Wheaton Chief of Police William Murphy announced today that a male Edison Middle School student has been charged with sending two emails to staff at the school containing threats of violence. The juvenile appeared in Juvenile Court this morning where Judge Michael Wolfe ordered the juvenile be placed on home detention.

On Dec. 11, 2018, school staff received an email allegedly from the student warning of violence to come at the school. The email allegedly stated in part “YOU COULD SHOW THIS YOUR CLASS IT WILL START AT 8:20 GET READY IM GONNA HURT KIDS AT SCHOOL.” The recipients of the email immediately contacted school authorities who in turn contacted the Wheaton

Police Department. An investigation into the matter led to the juvenile as the person who allegedly sent the threatening emails.

“For the second time in three days, a young student found himself standing before a judge for allegedly threatening a school,” Berlin said.

“As I have said in the past, school safety continues to be a top priority of my administration. School threats are not funny and anyone found to have made such a threat will be charged accordingly.”

The juvenile has been charged with two counts of False Report of a Threat to a School, a Class 4 Felony.

His next court appearance is scheduled for January 3, 2019.

Addison Trail girls bowling team defeats Leyden

Conference win ends long drought for Blazers

The Addison Trail girls bowling team’s recent West Suburban Conference win against Leyden at Stardust in Addison had some significance to it.

It was the Blazers’ first WSC win in four years. In girls bowling, the WSC has only one division that combines both Silver and Gold teams.

“That’s good news to report,” said Addison Trail coach Steve Gilliam.

Senior Clare O’Connell led the Blazers with a 537 series, which included games of 202, 171 and 164.

Junior Heather Soucie added a 506 series, which included games of 173, 169 and 164. Kasey Fiermuga had a 505 series, which included high games of 191 and 174.

“Clare was the star of the day,” said Gilliam.

In other recent WSC action, Addison Trail lost 2,500-2,200 to Hinsdale South and 2,500-2340 to Hinsdale Central. The Blazers also dropped a 3,100-2,800 WSC match to District 88 neighbor Willowbrook.

“We had back-to-back 2,800s,” said Gilliam. “We’re pretty happy with that. Kevin (Allen), the Willowbrook coach said our girls are improved. They probably are the best team in the conference. That was nice to hear. Our girls have worked hard.”

Addison Trail’s JV team had a 2-2 record through late last week.

“We have some experienced girls back and more importantly we have depth,” said Gilliam. “Before we would have one girl shooting in the 200s. This year is different. We have a lot of depth.”

Junior Yuliana Macias is new to the team. “Just like Kacey, she was bowling in a Saturday league and we said why don’t you come out for the team? Both she and Kacey are doing well.”

Senior Yvette Beltran also has been a key contributor. “Yvette is a good bowler,” said Gilliam.

Gilliam noted wins for both the varsity and JV team have resulted in some after-match dining fun. “We’re very excited that we won a match,” said Gilliam. “The girls are excited because I feed them. They have been going out to eat a lot lately. We ended up picking up pizza after one win and we went to Taco Bell after another.

They all are excited. We’re getting back to the fundamentals of having a good arm swing, hitting marks and making adjustments for spares.

Those all have been a focus.”

Addison Trail recently bowled in the West Aurora invitational and will return to action the first weekend of the new year.

“We have a great group of girls,” said Gilliam. “They are receptive to coaching, they like each other and they have fun. More importantly, they are getting better.”
