Bond set for Villa Park woman charged with sexual abuse of teen boys

On Wednesday, Dec. 5, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Mike Lay announced that bond had been set for a Villa Park woman accused of sexually abusing two young boys age 14 and 16. Stefanie Litton, 35, appeared at a Bond Hearing this morning where Judge George Bakalis set bond at $100,000 with 10% to apply. Litton has been charged with four counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse, a Class 2 Felony.

It is alleged that Litton met her victims at an underage drinking party she hosted at her home. It is alleged that she sexually abused one of her victims from December 2017, through February 2018, and that she sexually abused the second victim from January 2018 through July 2018. It is further alleged that the sexual abuse took place on multiple occasions in Litton’s vehicle. The Villa Park Police Department received an anonymous tip about the alleged abuse and began an investigation into the matter resulting in last week’s charges.

“It is alleged that this defendant preyed on two young boys simply to satisfy her own sick sexual desires,” Berlin said. “These allegations are extremely disturbing and, if found guilty, could land the defendant behind bars for a significant amount of time. I would like to thank the Villa Park Police Department for their work on this case.”

“I would like to thank members of the Villa Park Police Department’s Detective Division,” Lay said. “Working shoulder to shoulder with the DuPage County Children’s Center and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office we were able to identify and charge this alleged sexual predator.”

Litton’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 2, 2019 for arraignment in front of Judge Jeffrey MacKay. Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Annual Fall Capstone Art Exhibition runs through Dec. 15 Four seniors present work in a variety of media and themes

Emotions triggered by storytelling, visual branding for a new NFL team, marketing materials for a brewery, and bringing a children’s story to life are among the ambitious projects Elmhurst College seniors are tackling in the Art Department’s 51st Annual Fall Capstone Art Exhibition.

Four senior art majors are showing their work in the exhibition, which runs through Dec. 15 in the Barbara A. Kieft Accelerator ArtSpace. The culminating event for every graduating art major, the capstone exhibition requires students to create a body of work in their area of concentration, then plan the exhibition and design the promotional materials for it.

Manuel Aguirre, an art education major from Arlington Heights, painted a series of portraits based on his subjects’ emotional response to a story and conversation about it.

John Raymond Boland, 93 John Raymond Boland, a 54-year resident of Villa Park and the last 7 ½ years at Beacon Hill in Lombard, died Thursday December 6, 2018 at Beacon Hill at the age of 93. He was kind, witty, and young at heart and left an impact on all he met and will be missed by all who knew him. He was born to the late John and Cecilia Boland, April 21, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois He married the late LaVerne Boland nee Sauve on July 17, 1948 and enjoyed 63 wonderful years together.

Illinois boasts a hair-raising history of beasts and legends

Illinois boasts a hairraising history rife with spine-tingling stories — and that’s just with politics.

Otherwise, the state’s heritage brims with tall tales of mythic beasts, spooky legends and ghost stories. A few of the favorites: Old Book: In the earliest years of the 20th century, the Peoria State Hospital in Bartonville was home to a dear, mute man known only as A. Bookbinder. Strong and steady, he would dig graves for asylum funerals, ending each by sobbing hysterically and leaning on a tree that became famously known as The Graveyard Elm. In June 1910, Old Book went the way of all men, and the entire asylum came out for his farewell. Near the end, an apparition appeared at the Graveyard Elm. The Graveyard Elm: Old Book, weeping and moaning as always. But as soon as startled officials cracked open his casket to double-check on the dead man’s whereabouts, the crying ceased and Old Book’s form vanished from the tree. Inside the coffin, onlookers spotted Old Book’s peaceful face.

(Source: Peoria Journal Star) Piasa Bird: The Piasa (pronounced PIE-ah-saw) Bird — actually more like a dragon, with red eyes, menacing beard, scales and lengthy tail — preyed on Native Americans, eating them alive until a local chief, Chief Ouatoga, lured it out of its cave, using himself as bait.

When the creature flew out, an ambush of warriors slew it with a volley of poisoned arrows. A mural was said to have been painted (possibly more than 3,000 years ago) as a commemoration of the event.

Since 1939, people have reported seeing a woman wearing a white dress on the side of the road. Sometimes, she is picked up from the side of the road or given a ride home from a neighborhood dance, but she invariably vanishes when a car passes the cemetery.

Police officers found several tracks at the scene of the first sighting, and even heard its “inhuman” cry.

Slices of life

When life isn’t a bummer – not really It’s such a bummer when on a normal day when you have nothing else planned you get a phone call from your daughter asking if you can babysit your granddaughter for an hour or two and you of course say yes then proceed to spend that babysitting time just cuddling and listening to her coo and giggle. My day was a bummer.

It’s such a drag when a friend from out of town calls unexpectedly telling you they are in town and want to have lunch in an hour and you have to quit folding laundry to go and meet the friend and have a nice lunch with them spent catching up and sharing some laughs. Today was a major drag.

It’s such drudgery when you have a big grocery list and you have to go to the store and fill your cart with food and other goodies and it’s such a hassle to pack it all up, bring it home and then put it all away because that is time-consuming and time is money baby and at the end of it all you don’t even really think about the fact that you were able to pay for food for your family for the entire week without going into debt or scrimping on something.

Today was filled with drudgery and hassles.

It’s bothersome and downright exasperating when, in the middle of the night, the dog or cat or maybe both want to cuddle with you in bed and they take up space and their fur gets in your face and one of them even snores, but they love you unconditionally so you make room and indulge in a little snuggling.

It’s such a pain, early in the morning, when you half-wake up and want to go back to that really great dream you were having but you peek at the clock and it’s just about time for the alarm to go off and you are still tired and don’t want to start your day just yet and then you remember it’s Saturday and you don’t have to get up and you can sleep in for another hour or two and you pull up the covers and go right back to that great dream.

Last Saturday morning was a pain.

It’s irksome when the day is short but activities are long and you have to hop from one thing to the next because you are pulled in at least two but probably three or even four different directions and you have to leave one game early to make it to the last half of another scrimmage and all this is before the choir or

band concert and you are tempted to skip something but then one kid might feel shorted so you go and find yourself enjoying the game and the scrimmage and the music – each at its own pace and you realize these days are fleeting and there will come a time when you have an entire unencumbered day and evening and you will look back and remember these busy times with fondness.

Many of my days are irksome.

It can be easy, or maybe better put, lazy, to live our days, our hours, our moments with blinders on. To be focused on our present situation and find a change to our routine as an annoying disruption to the important ho hum of our day. Or we embrace our normal routine as mundane without appreciating all it holds.

It’s easy to get into a tizzy or fret about a particular situation. I often do. But then when I convince myself to take the blinders off the big picture comes into view and I see the scope of it all and that realization is like a warm blanket unfolding over top of me. There is much to fret about. Always will be.

But there is much, much more to not fret about. I choose door number two.

Dreams, large and small, keep coming true

I used to say that I manifested my husband, my dream man, and I suppose I did, and we have manifested a lovely life together.

The bucket list has been checked off and we are not really bucket list people. Future dreams are more general – like a fulfilling, adventurous life in all the ways that can happen.

We have taken the trips, bought the convertible, the joy house, and all the “material” items. Check.

Bill will fight bloated severance pay Starting Jan. 1, 2019, Illinois will have a new law on the books to fight the misuse of taxpayer dollars.

The law sponsored by state Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) will eliminate severance packages for employees that have been fired for misconduct and limit government-paid severance packages to an amount no greater than 20 weeks of compensation.

“This commonsense law will protect Illinois taxpayers from being on the hook for the actions of discred-

ited public officials,” Cullerton said.

“This will help put a stop to the state handing out blank checks to those who fail to do their jobs.”

The law was brought forward by Cullerton in partnership with the Better Government Association.

The Daily Herald reported that suburban taxpayers are often hit the hardest by this practice. Government administrators are frequently advised to grant rich severances in an attempt to head off employment litigation, so the law is aimed at counteracting

these actions.

Some of the employees who were fired for misconduct have received severance pay packages.

Cullerton’s new law will be known as the Government Severance Pay Act and is expected to save taxpayers millions of dollars over the next decade.

“The days of handing out bloated severance packages to disgraced public officials are coming to an end,” Cullerton said. “Our state cannot afford to waste a single penny,

especially to help folks who treat taxpayers like their own personal piggy bank.”

Senate Bill 3604 passed the Senate and House with unanimous support.

Cullerton will continue to work to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse in the 101st General Assembly, which is scheduled to start at the beginning of the new year.

These Willowbrook students took part in a Strategic Plan Focus Group on Nov. 30. District 88 is updating its Strategic Plan to retool and enhance the district’s existing 2010 plan. Through that process, the goal is to gather feedback from a variety of stakeholder groups, including students, to help shape the future direction of District 88.

Football standout Tumilty receives double honors

Willowbrook senior Scott Tumilty has been named as a recipient of the National Football Foundation (NFF) Scholar-Athlete Award by the Bears and the NFF Chicago Metro Chapter.

Tumilty was nominated by Willowbrook Head Football Coach Nick Hildreth for his accomplishments on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. Each Scholarship Nomination Form was reviewed by the Bears Scott Tumilty charity arm (Bears Care) and select NFF Board Members, and Tumilty was named as one of three award recipients.

As a NFF Scholar-Athlete, Tumilty is eligible to receive a college tuition scholarship of $4,000. He and other award recipients will be honored during the Annual Awards Ceremony on Feb. 18 at Halas Hall in Lake Forest, and Tumilty will be introduced by Hildreth during the event. The voice of the Bears Jeff Joniak will serve as Master of Ceremonies, and members of the Chicago media will attend the event, along with current and former NFL and college football players and other special guests.

Tumilty also was recently named as a 2018 honoree of the Burlsworth Character Award, a national recognition that honors players who represent the ideals and values Brandon Burlsworth had: to give 100 percent on the field and to stand as a moral example to his team.

During his career with the Willowbrook Football Team, Tumilty filled the positions of running back, wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner, and he served as Team Captain for two years. Tumilty is still deciding where he will attend college, and he plans to major in business or special education.

Willowbrook students serve VFW, recruits on Thanksgiving On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 22, The Brook Catering Co., comprised of Willowbrook students who are enrolled in culinary courses, provided a Thanksgiving meal for the Villa Park VFW Post 2801, which entertained a group of 54 recruits from the Great Lakes Naval Base.

Willowbrook Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher Amy Nowak, who coordinates The Brook Catering Co., said the students prepared the food in advance of the holiday. They made turkey, ham, green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing and a variety of dessert items for 100 people. The company donated the food and Nowak and members of The Brook Catering Co. stopped by the VFW on Thanksgiving to greet and speak with the group.

The recruits also had an opportunity to call family members and loved ones on phones that were donated for the day.

My list of concerts I have been to is long, long, long. I have seen all my beloveds. The only person still on my dream list is Robbie Williams. I became a Robbie devotee when I lived in France way back in 2005 and 2006. He’s not famous in America, but is the most celebrated pop icon across the world, and a national treasure of the UK. I have followed his tours and life over the years online and never pulled the trigger to travel overseas for a huge stadium concert.

And now I don’t have to. Robbie will be in Las Vegas for a handful of shows in 2019. His first, and I just got tickets. Even though he is not known in the states, the shows sold out in a flash. The British are coming. They love Vegas, and they love Robbie.

My point: things keep falling into place. Dreams keep coming true. I follow my soul nudges, the little niggles in my heart. And not just for concert tickets. For all things. Invitations to accept and those to decline. What to write and what to save for later. What to read or watch or attend. What to do next.

As we approach another new

year, once again I am in awe of how fast the calendar pages turn.

The passing of time no longer makes me feel a tinge of sadness or bittersweetness. It’s simply a reminder to be grateful for every day past and for all those that lie ahead.

My Prince Charming and I just turned 54. We, in theory, have 40 more years ahead of us. FORTY YEARS! That’s a long time. That excites me, thrills me, delights me.

Oh the plans and ideas we have!

Oh the magic that is still to come!

We are planning the year ahead, in some small ways, and also being open to the miracles yet to be revealed. Do you look at life that way? The DuPage County Health Department has been observing National Influenza Vaccination Week, also observed as Vaccinate Illinois Week statewide, reminding anyone 6 months and older who has not yet received influenza (flu) vaccine this season that it’s not too late to get vaccinated.

An annual flu vaccine is the best way to protect against this potentially serious disease.

Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctor visits, missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations. Flu vaccination also may make your illness milder if you do get sick.

Despite the unpredictable nature of the flu, you should get the 201819 flu vaccine for optimal protection against the flu this season, because flu viruses are constantly changing.

This season’s vaccines have been updated to protect against the viruses that surveillance data indicate will be most common this flu season.

It takes about two weeks after vac-

cination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against influenza virus infection.

In addition to a flu shot, take the following everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs: • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

• If you are sick with flu-like illness, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medicine) except to get medical care.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Influenza antiviral drugs can be a second line of defense for treatment of some who get sick with flu and can lessen the duration and severity of symptoms.

Addison Trail boys basketball team 6-1 through first seven contests Blazers win Elmwood Park-Ridgewood tournament

Balance in a basketball game is a commodity any coach would love to have.

In the case of the Addison Trail boys basketball team, balance on the offensive end has helped the squad get off to a strong 6-1 start through its first seven games this season.

After going 4-0 to win the Elmwood Park-Ridgewood tournament over Thanksgiving, Addison Trail has continued its winning ways since.

The Blazers were 59-48 non-conference winners against Lane Tech and 66-49 non-conference winners against Glenbard North. Addison Trail’s only loss in the first seven games was a 72-60 West Suburban Conference Gold Division setback to neighbor Willowbrook.

“Our offense has stayed up through most of the hot start,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons. “We’re

The Willowbrook boys basketball team continues to add to its early-season momentum.

The Warriors, who went 3-1 over the Thanksgiving holiday and reached the title game of the St. Charles East tournament, recently scored additional wins against District 88 neighbor Addison Trail and Metea Valley.

In a 69-65 non-conference win against Metea Valley, Matas Masys had 25 points and six boards. Charlie Flak added 12 points and six rebounds, while Everett Stubblefield III had nine points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

“We did well sticking with our full-court pressure,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins. “We caused a lot of turnovers and that gave us extra opportunities. That was the difference for us.”

During the 5-1 season-opening hot start, Perkins noted Willowbrook has used a high-intensity level of play to its advantage.

“It’s been our style of play,” he said. “We play a lot faster than we have in the past. We want to maximize as many possessions as possible. A lot of teams are not used to playing at the speed we like to play at or that we have to play at because we are undersized this year.”

Perkins also has been pleased with the balanced team effort he’s seeing night in and night out. “Usually every game it’s a different person stepping up for us,” he said.

In addition to Masys, Stubblefield and Flak having strong starts, Perkins also has been impressed with the play of Scotty Tumilty, Jack Hines, Deandre Holliday and Sam Tumilty.

“We have a lot of guys who have been consistent for us and we have a lot of guys who do a lot of different things for us whether it’s handling

the ball, playing fast or shooting the ball,” said Perkins. “That lends to our style of play this season. We’re a different team this season. The past three years we had Ethan Schuemer.

When you have a post player like that as your best player, you slow the game down and dump the ball to him and let him go to work. Now, we’re not waiting. We’re shooting it as quickly as possibly sometimes before the big crosses half court. It’s a different style of play that works for us this season.”

Perkins has no qualms with a 5-1 start. “I’m definitely pleased,” he said. “Our schedule definitely is a lot more difficult this season. We went to overtime with Plainfield East and played a historical program in St. Joe’s. We made it to the championship game of the St. Charles East tournament in our first year there.

That’s a prestigious tournament that’s been around for 60 years. Overall, we’re doing very well, especially considering we were shorthanded for a week with the football players still being in the state playoffs. We couldn’t go 5-on-5 in practice for a while because we had eight guys. It showed at the end of the St. Charles East tournament. We just ran out of gas. Since then, we’ve been able to get more practices in and good reps and get everybody on the same page.

But six games in to be 5-1 and 1-0 in conference, I’m quite pleased.”

Perkins acknowledged Willowbrook has a tough test ahead of it this week. The Warriors played a conference game against Hinsdale South earlier this week and plays another WSC Gold game at Morton Friday and then heads east on St. Charles Road to play York Saturday night.

“We’ll know more about ourselves by the end of the week,” said Perkins.

In the 72-60 triumph over Addison Trail, Masys had 22 points, five rebounds and eight assists. Scotty Tumilty had 20 points, while Stubblefield had 18 points and three steals.

Lyons said the Blazers’ continue working to get better on the defensive end. “Defensively, we haven’t been bad,” he said. “We need to be a little better there and take the next step.”

Lyons isn’t surprised by the team’s play out of the gates. “We have some high expectations,” he said. “We had 11 seniors coming back so we expected to lean on them a lot. We know from the schedule that these are going to be battles night in and night out.

It’s nice when you can come out on top. We also know we still have a big climb ahead of us as we get toward Christmas.”

Lyons has seen consistent play

from the likes of Adem Mehmeti, JT Daniels and Sheldon Allgood, the team’s top three leading scorers.

Mehmeti is averaging 15.5 points per game, while Daniels is at 11.5 points and Allgood averages 10 points a game. AJ Carlson is right there as well, averaging nine points a game.

Mehmeti, Daniels and Allgood are seniors, while Carlson is a junior.

“You add all that up and that’s 2/3 of our scoring,” the coach pointed out.

“Those guys are very consistent on the offensive end of the floor,” said Lyons. “Each of them has had double-figure games for us. We’re getting that on different nights. We’ve had good balance across the board.”

Lyons also had high praise for K’Vhon Pounds and Justin Werderitch. “K’Vhon is a spark off the bench for us,” he said. “He brings athleticism to the floor and has had his fair share of highlights. Justin has started for us all year. He’s a senior

and just had his best game of the year with 14 points against Glenbard North.”

Addison Trail plays York and Leyden this week. The Blazers return to the Glenbard West Christmas tournament this season.

“I’m happy with the start,” said Lyons. “I told the guys we can rest on our laurels later on,” he said. “Each game poses different challenges for us. We’re stacking wins and starting to feel better about the way we play.

We’re using this earlier part of the schedule to get ready for the back end.”

At the Elmwood Park-Ridgewood tournament where Addison Trail went 3-0 at Elmwood Park and then played the first-place team from the Ridgewood tournament and won that contest as well, Mehmeti and Allgood were named to both the Elmwood Park and Ridgewood all-tournament teams.

Fenton boys swimming team defeats Elgin Fischer, Janovsky and Feddersen shine in multiple events

Fenton’s boys swimming team kicked off the season with a victory against Elgin where it combined to win 19 of 22 events on the varsity and JV levels.

Nik Fischer, Matt Janovsky and Lucas Feddersen each won two individual events and were part of two winning relays for the Bison.

Fenton also lost a competitive meet to Illinois Math and Science Academy. Conrad Oberski and Fischer each had individual varsity wins.

Fenton is coming off a 2017-2018 season where it placed fifth in conference. “That was our highest in at least several years,” assistant coach Dan Hennebry noted.

Fischer, Oberski, Janovsky and Feddersen are key returners for Fenton. Fischer qualified for state in the 100 last year with a time of 47.70, while narrowly missing qualification in the backstroke, his other specialty.

Oberski is a sprint freestyle and breaststroke specialist and had personal best times at conference and sectionals last season. Janovsky, Hennebry noted, is strong in the butterfly and set a personal best in that event at 55.10 at sectionals.

Feddersen is an all-around freestyle swimmer, providing head coach Al Pell flexibility and versatility to meet the competition strengths in dual meets.

“Those four seniors were all-conference last year,” Hennebry pointed out. “They expect to exceed last year’s strong performances this season.

Keep an eye on Nik, Conrad, Lucas and Matt through the season. Steady progress and hard work through the season is needed to reach personal and team goals.”

Freshman Kasper Widlo is a strong newcomer for Fenton. “Kasper is competitive in all four strokes and already has broken into starting varsity relay

assignments,” said Hennebry. “Given his all-around skill level, Kasper also is expected to challenge in the 200 IM.” Hennebry said other new team arrivals who add substantially to team depth include Patryk Bartnik and Kamil Widlo.

Junior Matthew Cyran is Fenton’s first diver in years. “Matthew is a strong swimmer as well, adding to our team depth,” said Hennebry.”

Fenton has 21 swimmers, including numerous freshmen and sophomore competitors, in the program this season. “Our team is the largest in several years, enabling us to field competitive varsity and JV lineups,” said Hennebry.

Seniors Jordan Loyola, Matt McElroy and Brandon Stiltner will continue to build on last year’s performances, Hennebry noted, while juniors Maciej Sporna, Brendon Dal, Ivan Golovin and Jason Gasior provide additional scoring in both sprint and distance events, Hennebry added. Hennebry noted sophomore and freshman swimmers Joe Mazariegos, Dan Roucka, Nicholas Pietrasz, Yael Monzalvo, Michael Rogowski and Logan Selck will add to the team’s point totals.

“The strength of our team is our strong senior core and our team size and depth,” said Hennebry, who noted Fenton is strong in the sprint events, likely due to the focus and emphasis on sprinting during practice. “The team is comprised of fine young men with a variety of interests and a strong scholastic bent.”

Hennebry added Fenton’s 200 medley and freestyle relays will be the team’s strongest with the achievable goal of qualifying for the state championship meet.

Hennebry said the coaching staff expects this team to be Fenton’s strongest in many years.

“Conference performances on both the JV and varsity levels may provide our highest finish if the team continues to match early-season training focus and meet performances,” he said.

Fenton swam against Morris earlier in the week and will head to the Leyden invitational Saturday.

Willowbrook wrestlers gain early-season experience Some Warriors grapplers with 17 matches already

The Willowbrook wrestling team has had plenty of opportunities to gain mat experience in the early going of the 2018-2019 season.

The Warriors placed second at the recent Vernon Hills tournament and some of their wrestlers already have as many as 17 matches under their belt.

Zach Seymour leads the way with a 16-1 record. Elijah Brockie and Richie Scheelk both are 12-5, while David Kapica is 10-6.

Willowbrook finished fifth last season in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division.

New coach Richard Ortiz said teams such as Addison Trail and

Downers Grove South figure to be top-tier contenders in the WSC Gold this season. “I see us somewhere in the middle,” he said.

Seymour was 22-10 last season at 120 pounds, while Sheelk was 1917 at 126 pounds. Wyatt Borri won 12 matches last year, John Peterson won 17 matches at 170 pounds and Brockie wrestled in five varsity contests at 182 pounds.

Kapica (132 pounds) and Nick Mabutas (138 pounds) are key newcomers.

“We have a young and scrappy team that is eager to learn and grow,” said Ortiz. “They have gotten better at understanding that every point matters. Therefore, they scrap to get bonus points or fight not to give them up. They also have gotten much better with their physicality and hand fighting. They work hard every day and come to practice with a purpose.”

steals. Herron had six points, while Tumilty had eight assists. Willowbrook shot 42 percent from the field and held a 32-18 points-in-the-paint advantage and a 15-4 second-chance points edge.

Willowbrook also defeated Burbank Reavis 56-34 in a non-conference game. Willowbrook trailed 12-10 after the first quarter, but led 22-19 at halftime. The Warriors outscored Reavis 25-6 in the third quarter to pull away.

McCann had 13 points and sank two 3-pointers. Dasbach had 12 points, while Tumilty had 10 points, four assists and seven rebounds. Herron added 10 points and four steals.

Fenton boys bowlers win three in a row

Three Bison averaging 160 or higher in early going

The Fenton boys bowling team is off to a strong start early in the season.

After dropping a contest to Hinsdale South where it bowled a 2,477 series, the Bison rattled off wins against Streamwood (2,676 pinfall), Naperville Central (2,567) and Chicago Christian (2,562) to move to 3-1 through its first four duals.

Through four contests, Jimmy Palumbo was leading the way with a

173 average. Henry Valenzuela was at 167, while Arthur Kawalkowski was averaging a 161. Joey Potkay was at 159 and Matt Sipes was averaging 156.

Palumbo (junior), Kawalkowski (senior) and Valenzuela (sophomore) are Fenton’s leading returners from a year ago.

Freshman Gabe Rodriguez is a key newcomer for coach Mike Baker.

“Our team has a great attitude and creates a great environment in helping our new bowlers to learn the sport,” he said.

Baker said one key emphasis thus far has been spare shooting as a team during each practice. “I’ve seen significant improvement so far,” he said.

“We have the ability to bowl competitively against pretty much any other team out there when we are making our spares. This, along with grit and perseverance after a bad frame or game, are they keys to any successful season—no one averages 300. How we deal with our missed shots makes the biggest difference.”

Baker said the Bison have “many bowlers who are capable of bowling above a 200 on any given game,” he

said. “If they are able to string a few games together, Henry, Arthur, Jimmy and Joey Potkay can all bowl a great series.”

Baker added the environment during practices and competitions is a positive one. “Their attitude and sense of humor always make me look forward to our practices and events,” he said. “We’ve always been fortunate to have a great group of kids.

They are a pleasure to be around and

a pleasure to coach.”

Baker said the future is bright for the program. “This is definitely a growing year for us with the great majority of our team being juniors or younger,” he said. “We typically have a tough regional to get through with many teams averaging 200-plus per bowler. We fit in the middle of that pack with a huge potential to improve as our underclassmen bowlers continue to grow.”

State House holiday décor includes statue from Satanic Temple

Lawyers: ‘It’s a First Amendment freedom of speech issue’

According to a report from NBC News, the state house in Springfield has been decorated for the holidays with one addition that has made some people uncomfortable.

In addition to the usual festive garland and lights, there is a statue on display – right next to the Christmas tree, a Nativity scene, and a Menorah – funded and provided by the Satanic Temple of Chicago.

The Satanic Temple calls the sculpture “Snaketivity,” which is made of resin, and displays a hand holding an apple with a snake creeping around it. The arm and hand are about 18 inches tall, according to Dave Druker, a press secretary for the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, which handles the maintenance of the Capitol building.

According to reports, the statue sits on a base that reads, “Knowledge is the greatest gift.” The Satanic Temple group insists it is bringing the message that “religious freedom means freedom … for ALL religions, not just the ones that don’t offend Christians.”

The news report said a GoFundMe page had been launched to cover the cost of construction, transportation and installation. The goal was to raise $1500, but a total of $1700 was raised. The page has the message, “Please consider what you may do to help us bring Satan to Springfield.”

The statue will remain in the Capitol until Dec. 29 when all the holiday decorations will come down.

One observer told NBC News that recognizing free speech does not mean one agrees with what is said.

“I suppose it is their free speech rights to [provide the statue], so I can’t deny that,” the man said. “But, do I agree with it? Absolutely not. I can’t disagree with the statement in itself but when it’s coming from a satanic or cult group, my response would be that everything about Satan is a lie.”

Druker reportedly said that the Satanic Temple of Chicago had applied to display the statue and attorneys for the state of Illinois said it was indeed a First Amendment issue and that the group had a right to express their opinion.

Druker added that there is also a statement in the holiday display from the Freedom from Religion Foundation that reads: “Religion is but a myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.” Druker also said that for years, there was a young man in Springfield who submitted a “Festivus” pole, which was put up in the Capitol as well. That decoration is a nod to a holiday created by a character on the TV show, “Seinfeld.”

IC Catholic Prep wrestling team looks to continue success Returning state qualifier Vargas, Barney, Scott lead the way

The IC Catholic Prep wrestling team made plenty of history last season.

The Knights went 7-3 during the regular season and took second in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division. IC Catholic Prep took fourth at the MSC tournament. All three marks were the highest finishes in program history. IC Catholic Prep also qualified for the Class 1A dual-team state finals in Bloomington, another first for the program.

The Knights are looking to continue the string of successes once again this season. Coach Kevin Sliva returns the likes of senior 285-pounder David Vargas, who won MSC, regional and sectional titles as a junior last year and took fifth in the state, earning him an all-state designation.

Also back are junior Joe Scott III and sophomore Finn Barney. Scott, who will wrestle at 182 pounds, was a state first alternate last year, while

Barney, who will compete at 120 pounds, took second at the regional level a year ago and also was a state first alternate.

Key newcomers to the group include senior Joe Bigane, who will wrestle at 170 pounds, and junior Matteo Cerasuolo, who will wrestle at 152. Bigane took his junior year off to focus on hockey, while Cerasuolo was injured during his first season last year.

Sliva noted the team has plenty of wrestling experience on the roster.

“We have 16 kids on the team with previous wrestling experience. It’s the most we’ve ever had,” he said.

“We gained valuable experience during last season’s team state finals berth in Bloomington.”

Sliva added his wrestlers were hard at work away from the highschool practice room. “Many worked hard in the off-season growing their all-around wrestling skill set,” he said.

Juveniles placed on home detention following threat to Lake Park High

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Roselle Deputy Chief of Police Roman Tarchala announced last week that two female juveniles had been placed on home detention in their parents’ care following an alleged threat they made aimed at Lake Park High School.

The juveniles appeared at a detention hearing on Nov. 29, where Judge Michael Wolfe ordered home detention for the pair.

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, Roselle police received information from authorities at Lake Park High School regarding an alleged Snapchat post in which a female student threatened the school and asked another female student “want me to bring an extra gun for you.”

An investigation into the post led by the Roselle Police Department led to the two juveniles. The alleged post was seen by another student at Lake Park High School who told their mother who in turn alerted authorities at the school. The girls were taken into custody that day without incident.

Both juveniles have been charged with two counts of Disorderly Conduct – Threat of Violence at a School, a Class 4 Felony. Their next court appearance is scheduled for December 10, 2018, in front of Judge Robert Anderson.
