They may be popular on Home & Garden Television, and the trend toward more efficient and environmentally-responsible living may be on the upswing, but tiny homes are not a good fit for Villa Park, according to the Village Planning and Zoning Commission.

“I keep going back to it’s a trailer park,” said P&Z Chairman Robin Whitehurst at the Nov. 20 meeting.

“I completely agree with the fear of what is new,” said Titon Tiny Homes owner Bob Clarizio. “You have a reputation to uphold for your community. On the other hand, there are a number of people that would love to live here if something like this was [available]. We get five or six people a day [inquiring about building in the Villa Park area].”

The discussion at the Monday, Nov. 20th P&Z meeting began with Community Development Director Pat Grill addressing the Commission.

“Tiny homes are certainly the darling of social media and HGTV right now,” said Grill. “They do offer the ability to have a small carbon footprint and be more affordable than your average single family home.”

Grill noted that the current zoning ordinance does not allow for tiny homes in Villa Park. In order to allow such dwellings in the Village, there would need to be amendments to the zoning ordinance and some guidelines specific to the small homes, which are typically just 100- to 400-square-feet.

Tiny homes are considered recreational vehicles (RVs) when it comes to manufacturing requirements. Villa Park does not allow full-time living in RV’s within the Village.

Diocese of Joliet Vocations Director visits Montini Catholic Montini Catholic freshmen Theology students were treated to a familiar guest speaker on Friday, Nov, 3. Father Burke Masters, Vocations Director from the Diocese of Joliet, visited the classrooms to tell his own story of his call to the priesthood, and how it relates to everyone’s search for meaning in their lives. Father Burke also celebrates Mass with Montini students throughout the school year and was visiting the classrooms in anticipation of National Vocation Awareness Week (Nov. 5-11).

In addition to being Vocations Director at the Joliet Diocese, Father Burke also serves as the Chaplain of the Chicago Cubs.

It was at the ripe age of seven that he realized his dream to be a major league baseball player, but it was a very perceptive sister (Sister Margaret Ann) at Providence Catholic High School (New Lenox), who first noticed that he was searching for more in his life. She gave him his first Bible.

“After reading the Gospel of Matthew, I had a sense of peace and joy that I’d never felt before,” Father Burke told the students.

He was compelled to keep reading, and it was after learning about the crucifixion of Jesus that he was inspired to follow Jesus.

Father Burke converted to Catholicism during his senior year in high school, while he also enjoyed a very successful baseball season, setting records, with a baseball ca-

reer in his sights. He accepted a baseball scholarship from Mississippi State (1986-1990) and went on to play in the College World Series where he was named Most Valuable Player.

Despite his athletic successes, he was not drafted and began his search for a new career.

“Do something you enjoy, is what my mom advised me. God has given each and every one of us gifts and talents for a specific purpose,” he said. “Most people use these gifts for selfish purposes - I was trying to figure out how to pursue a career in baseball.”

Burke was invited (by girlfriend, Stephanie) to attend Eucharistic Adoration and it was during this time that the idea of priesthood first came to him.

“We encounter Jesus in silence,” he explained. “We are surrounded by so much noise that most of the time we cannot hear Him, but if we grow silent, we will hear Him.” Father Burke began hearing affirmations for the priesthood in his friends and people he encountered, telling him that he should consider priesthood.

“That was God speaking through others,” he said.

“If this is your call from God, you have to answer it,” said girlfriend Stephanie, who Burke planned to marry. “I cannot compete with God.”

Conroy seeking applicants for Villa Park office internship

State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, is seeking high school and college students interested in state government and community outreach to apply for an internship in her Villa Park district office.

“Internships are an excellent way for students to learn about government through hands-on experience,” Conroy said. “This internship provides students an opportunity to learn about the power of civic engagement and the many skills necessary to successfully reach out and serve diverse communities. Many of my past interns have gone on to study political science or pursue careers in government.”

Interns will have the opportunity to act as a liaison between constituents and the state of Illinois, research legislation and plan community outreach events. Students will gain invaluable experience that will be beneficial for any future career. Hours are flexible and the internship will be based in Conroy’s constituent office at 28 S. Villa Ave. in Villa Park. Conroy’s office may work with academic advisors for students eligible to earn college credit. VPRD plans special events for kids for the holidays

Parks and Recreation will hold several special events in December to celebrate the holidays.

Bring the family to Sundaes with Santa on Friday, Dec. 8 from 6:157:15 p.m. at the Iowa Community Center, 338 N. Iowa. All ages will enjoy visiting with Santa, building their own Sunday and children will make a holiday craft to take home.

The fee is $5 per person pre-registration; $10 per person, day of event provided space is available.

Cookies for Santa will take place Wednesday, Dec. 20 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Kids ages 3-10 will decorate cookies to take home for Santa, sample cookies and have hot cocoa. The fee is $9 per person.

Chocolate is the theme in Let’s Learn About Chocolate on Thursday, Dec. 21 from 4-5:30 p.m. Kids ages 3-5 will listen to a book about chocolate, taste different kinds of chocolate and make a chocolate treat to take home. Chemistry is the theme in a Holiday Chocolate Chemistry class for ages 6-10 on Thursday, Dec. 21 from 6-8 p.m. Pre-registration is required for all classes.

Grill also informed the Commission that Village staff has researched such communities across the country in several different states.

“The big question is, what is our appetite for addressing tiny homes?” said Grill. “Is is something that Villa Park needs? Is it something that the community as a whole accepts and wants to pursue?”

P&Z Chairman Robin Whitehurst said he didn’t think Villa Park had the land available for a tiny home park. With a plan that would build up to eight such tiny homes on the same amount of land that currently is zoned for just one to two single family homes, density would become an issue.

“It comes down to density, land use and it’s a big consideration that we are pretty much land locked.” said Whitehurst. “There isn’t a lot of open space According to Clarizio, his company has 60 “well-qualified buyers” seeking to locate in Villa Park, if tiny homes were allowed. Clarizio has a plan that would place tiny homes on an open piece of land located on Washington near Route 83.

“The lot has been in and out of tax sale for 30 years, if not longer,” he said. “[Those types of lots] are logistically frustrating to build on.”

According to Clarizio, the land would be owned and managed by the developer. Lots would be rented and there would be rules and regu-

lations to keep up the community standards. He was emphatic that the area would not be a mobile home park.

Commissioner Vince Gatto said Villa Park has to think bigger than just finding a use for these undesirable lots. He said he wants to see more density near the train station.

Chairman Whitehurst asked what reason there was to recommend such changes.

“For me to say that Villa Park is going to entertain [tiny homes], that we are going to recommend this to the Board and citizens… why?”

“To be first,” said Clarizio. “I’m asking for the opportunity to set a precedent.”

“That’s not the ‘why,’” Whitehurst said. “We’re already the affordable community. I don’t see this kind of density working out.

I’m attuned to what our staff deals with in terms of property management.”

Commissioner Mike Orlowski added that he would rather address other concerns than allowing tiny homes in Villa Park.

“Personally, we have a foursquare mile town,” he said. “The last thing I want to see is land stripped down for tiny homes. I’d rather see a ball park go in, a basketball court, a pool that we have to figure out what to do with.”

The P&Z Commission ended the discussion by leaving the possibility of revisiting the question open. According to Whitehurst, if the right plan was brought before

the Commission, then it would be considered.

Grill summed up the tiny home discussion: “What I have heard tonight is generally ‘no,’ however if the right project came along that was able to use the PUD process… the developer gets something out of it and the Village gets something out of it, a win-win for both sides, not strictly a win for the developer to be able to put as many units into the smallest area as possible. Then we could look at it. But in general, tiny homes and developing a specific zoning district [for them] is something P&Z is not interested in.”

Addison Nov. 19 Tiffany Thoman, 24, of Naperville, was charged with DUI subsequent to an investigative stop by police near Lake and Highview at around 12:07 a.m.

Nov. 15

Walter Lopez-Pedro, 18, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and no driver’s license near Lake and Addison at around 3:17 a.m. Police said Lopez-Pedro’s vehicle was involved in the hit-andrun of a parked vehicle and light pole.

He was found in the area of Lake and Addison and found to be DUI, according to police.

Villa Park Nov. 18 Attempted fraud was reported in the 200 block of W. Roosevelt at around 1:36 p.m. Police said an unknown male and female subject presented fraudulent identification to the sales representative for the purchase of a vehicle. Employees

contacted the police and the suspects left the dealership.

Nov. 17

Allan E. Brown, 61, of Des Plaines, was charged with two counts of DUI, speeding, improper lane usage, disobeying a traffic control device and failure to signal a lane change near North and West at around 11:56 p.m.

A 34-year-old Villa Park man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 900 block of W. North at around 9:03 p.m. April 24. The original complaint and arrest warrant were issued Nov. 17.

Fraud was reported in the 500 block of E. St. Charles at around 2:53 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect charged $156.16 on a credit card that was reported lost.

Fraud was reported in the 200 block of W. North Ave. Police said that between 5:30 and 6 p.m., an unknown suspect used a credit card to make a purchase at a store. The owner of the card received a text alert advising the use of the card, while the owner was shopping at a different store. The card owner was unaware their wallet was missing until they received the alert.

Fraud was reported in the 700 block of N. Villa at around 6 p.m.

Police said an unknown suspect fraudulently obtained bank information and transferred money from the victim’s bank account. The victim contacted their bank and reported the fraud.

Nov. 16 David T. Bonner, 45, of Bellwood, was charged with two counts of battery and driving while license suspended in the 300 block of N. Cornell at around 3:07 p.m. Sept.

18. The original complaint and arrest warrant were issued Nov. 16.

Kimberly L. Martin, 28, of Villa Park, was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol and driving while license suspended near St. Charles and Westmore at around 12:41 a.m.

Nov. 15 Michael A. McCabe, 23 (last known residence: Villa Park), was charged with disorderly conduct near Villa and Madison at around 6:52 p.m.

In 2012 Father Burke became Chaplain of the Chicago Cubs, celebrating private Mass with team members and families prior to the games.

“It was during spring training with the Cubs last year, I was invited to suit up,” he said. “I was on the field with the players, Rizzo, Russell and Hendricks, when it hit me and I was overcome with emotions - my dream of being involved in baseball had come full circle, but in God’s way, not mine.”

“Following God leads to true happiness,” he said. “We may not know what or how, but God will show us - holiness does truly lead to happiness.”

Father Burke has been greatly influenced by a simple quote from

St. Augustine - “My heart is restless until it rests in thee.”

Observance of Vocation Awareness Week began in 1976 when the U.S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for the celebration. It was later moved to Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in Jan. Last year, after extensive consultation, the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations moved the observance of National Vocation Awareness Week to Nov. to engage Catholic schools and colleges more effectively in this effort.

This will be the first year it will be held in Nov. Father Burke along with the Joliet Diocese Vocation office is hosting an event, “Who will fill these shoes,” on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Blanchette Catholic Center,16555 Weber Road, Crest Hill. DuPage Care Center seeking holiday donations for residents This holiday season, donors can simply click a button and brighten the holidays for DuPage Care Center residents.

Care Center staff and residents created a new Amazon Wish List which offers a variety of different items the residents wish for this holiday season.

The list builds upon the success of the Care Center’s annual Adopt-A-Resident program, which provides donors with individuals’ wish lists for the holi-

days. This year, all the participating residents have been matched with donors.

“When we reached out to those who donated to the Adopt-A-Resident program last year, we got a tremendous response, and we were able to find donations for all our residents on that list,” said Health and Human Services Chairman Bob Larsen. “We wanted to provide another opportunity for anyone else who may be interested in donating.”

Saint Genesius Productions youth theater group will perform The Story of Holly and Ivy at Montini Catholic High School on Saturday, Dec. 16 and Sunday, Dec. 17.

Twenty-five talented students from local Catholic grade schools and religious education programs, including St. Pius X and Sacred Heart, have joined together to create this moving holiday performance.

This is a story about wishing — Ivy, Holly, and Mrs. Jones each have one powerful Christmas wish. Ivy, an orphan, wishes for a real home and sets out in search of the grandmother she’s sure she can find. Holly, a doll, wishes for a child to bring her to life. Mrs. Jones wishes more than anything for a child. Can all three wishes come true? This festive tale is filled with the warm glow of Christmas spirit. The play has been adapted by Saint Genesius alumna Emily O’Brochta and Saint Genesius Artistic Director Sara Corkery from Rumer Godden’s classic children’s book by the same name.

Montini Catholic High School in Lombard welcomed 450 students from 37 area middle schools to its 31st Annual Robert Huntoon Memorial Math Contest on Saturday, Nov. 11 in the school’s Field House.

The event was open to 6, 7, and 8th grade students. Participants were challenged first with an individual test and second with a team test. The grades were divided into three divisions: Euclid, Pythagoras and Riemann.

third. During the possession, Eatman had runs of 12 and 46 yards. Maci’ gerace’s PAT put the Knights up 28-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

Eatman’s fourth touchdown came via a nine-yard run up the middle with 7:24 left in the game. During that drive, Eatman also had runs of 15, 11 and 15 yards.

Pleasant Plains had 13 possessions in the game with nine ending via punt, two via interception and one via a missed field goal (the other was the end of the game).

Eatman finished the day with 24 rushes for 237 yards and the four touchdowns. He had a long run of 56 yards and averaged 9.9 yards per carry. IC Catholic Prep gained 249 yards on the ground (6.1 yards per carry).

West completed 9 of 11 passes for 110 yards. Jacob Lytton caught four passes for 60 yards, while Khalil Saunders caught three passes for 28 yards. Khali Saunders caught one pass for 13 yards, while Hipskind had the nine-yard reception.

On defense, Khalil Saunders and Max Cook each had an interception.

Kemon Reese led the IC Catholic Prep defense with 11 tackles. Khali Saunders and Kevin Cooke each had 10 tackles. Saunders had two tackles for loss. Cooke, Khalil Saunders, Ricky Mysliwiec, Michael Johnson and Packer each had one tackle for loss. Johnson and Packer each had a quarterback sack.

Pleasant Plains was limited to 155 yards of total offense. IC Catholic Prep had 359 yards of total offense.

Eatman finished the season with 1,514 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns. West finished with 1,941 passing yards with 24 touchdowns against only five interceptions.

IC Catholic Prep ended up averaging 455.9 yards of total offense this season, while its 14 opponents were held to an average of 171.9 yards of total offense.

IC Catholic Prep’s football team made it two Class 3A state titles in a row with a 35-0 shutout of Pleasant Plains in the 3A championship game at Northern Illinois University’s Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.

IC Catholic Prep finished the year 13-1 and is 27-1 over the last two years.

It’s the programs fourth football state title since 2002 and second under the direction of current head coach Bill Krefft. In the win against Pleasant Plains, IC Catholic Prep held only a 6-0 advantage heading into halftime after Lazerick Eatman scored on a oneyard run. The two-point conversion pass failed.

However, the Knights kicked things into gear in the third quarter.

Quarterback CJ West, also the team’s punter, unleashed a 59-yard punt that was downed at the Pleasant Plains See IC, Page 19 1-yard-line.

Six plays later, Pleasant Plains, from its own 3-yard-line, punted only 15 yards which gave IC Catholic Prep excellent field position leading to West’s 19-yard-touchdown run off a quarterback draw. Eatman ran in the two-point score to give the Knights a 14-0 lead with 5:19 to play in the stanza.

After another Pleasant Plains punt, Eatman scored his second TD of the N game on a 1-yard run over left end.

The score was set up by a West to 294 Sean Hipskind screen pass for nine 94 Willow Rd yards and an Eatman 44-yard run to 43 the left. Joey Maci’ gerace’s extra Renewal point made it 21-0.

Addison Trail girls basketball team goes 3-1 at AT-Fenton tournament Scorza scores 20 points in win against Fenton

The Addison Trail girls basketball team turned in a strong performance at its own Addison Trail-Fenton tournament to start the season.

The Blazers defeated Lane Tech 3433 and then lost to Leyden before finishing up play with wins against Elgin

(54-52) and Fenton to end 3-1.

“Defensively we were OK at times.

The first game against Lane Tech we did great, only giving up 33 points,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Schader. “We rebounded well, but turned the ball over a ton. We found a way to win. We scored a little better than I thought we would.”

The only rough outing came against Leyden. “We played a terrible first half against them,” said Schader. “We beat them in the second half, but ended up losing by like 20 points. We could have played better against them.

We played better in the second half.

That first half against them hurt us.

We turned the ball over a ton. We have two more games with them in conference and it will be a good chance to compete against them and hopefully win.”

Schader was pleased with the other three contests. “That first game against Lane Tech was the first time we’d beaten them in a while,” he said.

“Against Fenton, our transition game was very good and we shot free throws well against Elgin. We were 15 of 22.”

Schader also lauded the rebound-

ing efforts of Nicci Scorza and Serena Gilliam throughout the tournament.

“They rebounded the ball well all four games and that helped keep us in games,” he said.

Against Fenton, Scorza had 20 points, while Bernice Berumen had 15 points and Gilliam had 11 points. Vincenza Zaccaro hit four 3-pointers in the first game against Lane Tech. She had 19 points in that game.

“Bernice was great the whole tournament,” said Schader. “She rebounded and scored when we needed her to.

She did a great job. Her sister, Brenda,

played well at the point guard. She did a good job and hit a couple of big shots for us. She’s only a junior.”

Schader liked the depth his team had in the tournament. “We are young,” he said. “We played probably six or seven juniors and four seniors.

So we probably had nine, 10 and 11 kids playing. We played a ton of kids and a lot of them are young.”

Addison Trail opened West Suburban Conference Gold Division action earlier in the week against Hinsdale South and will continue conference play Friday against Morton.

Willowbrook girls bowling team ready for a competitive season Warriors return three all-conference bowlers

There is no shortage of quality bowlers returning this season for the Willowbrook girls team.

The Warriors are fresh off a 20162017 season where they went 8-3 in duals and took fourth in the competitive West Suburban Conference.

Leading the list of returners is three-time all-conference bowler Dana Sasenick, who averaged 183 last year. She led the conference with a 269 high game and finished third in the loop in conference average. As a sophomore, Sasenick advanced to the sectional round.

Junior Katie Pettinger also is back.

She averaged 166 and was an allWSC Gold bowler. As a freshman, Pettinger also advanced to sectionals. “Katie is our leadoff bowler and does an amazing job sparking the team,” said Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen.

Sophomore Makaylah Jones averaged 170 as a freshman last year and also was an all-conference performer. “Makaylah was a major piece to the team last year and had a direct impact, which helped the team make it to sectionals,” said Allen.

Junior Holly Helsper is back as well after averaging 161 in conference play. “Holly has put in a lot of work this off-season and is looking to have a breakout year,” said Allen.

Allen has noted some bumps in preseason scores from the likes of Sasenick, Helsper and Pettinger.

“They have been really working hard in the off-season and trying to increase their scores,” he said. “During practice they have been putting up some big games. I am excited to watch them bowl this year because

the sky is the limit for those three.”

Allen noted the program has seen a spike in participants, particularly at the freshman level where 12 new freshmen have joined the program.

“We are all very excited about that,” said Allen.

Allen, whose team kicked off the season last weekend at the Plainfield Central invitational, said depth will be a major plus for the Warriors this season. “The team this year from top to bottom are all quality bowlers,” he said. “The girls all have been working hard on targeting and shot-making, especially in crucial moments of the game. Making quality shots un-

der pressure is what we will continue to work on throughout the season.

The girls all believe in each other’s abilities with confidence.”

And it’s that word confidence that Allen believes will take the team places this season. “In order for our team to have success this year we have to keep confident in our ability,” he said. “This is a long season and there are a lot of games and matches, so the girls need to stay relaxed throughout the season.”

With a more veteran roster, Allen said team chemistry is another asset.

“The best part of our team is the camaraderie the girls have with each

other,” he said. “Most of the girls have been bowling with each other for a few years now. This brings the girls together, which will help them during the long days at invites.”

Allen said the WSC will again be packed with strong teams. “Our conference always is very competitive,” he said. “This year will come down to the team that is most consistent. There are a lot of teams in our conference who can be looked at as the favorites. I believe we also are mentioned in the running for a conference championship, but this will be a challenging year with a lot of competition.”

Fenton girls basketball team defeats Elgin

The Fenton girls basketball team opened the season going 1-3 at the Addison Trail-Fenton tournament.

Fenton dropped a 58-49 game to Leyden and then defeated Elgin by a 68-61 count. The Bison lost 71-34 to Lane Tech and 62-44 to Addison Trail.

Senior Amari Benbow and junior Julia Kaspari were named to the

all-tournament team.

“The girls really fought from the opening tip until the final horn like we expect them to,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello. “We also got out and ran the system the best that we could hope for after such limited time together.”

Mello, a longtime Fenton athletics coach and the school’s new girls basketball coach, was hired after this school year started and had limited time with his players prior to the start of preseason training.

Willowbrook’s Quintas earns conference football honor Warriors girls basketball team defeats Rich Central behind McCann’s 25 points CORRESPONDENT

The Willowbrook football team was rewarded for its continued strong play with a quartet of conference accolades.

Included in that group is Edgar Quintas being named the West Suburban Conference Gold Division offensive lineman of the year. Jack Jessen was named the WSC Gold MVP, Martique Barksdale was named special teams player of the year and Betty Ann Garrett was named kicker of the year. Willowbrook won the WSC Gold with a perfect 6-0 record and advanced to the state quarterfinals for a second year in a row.

“Our offensive line meshed well together,” said Quintas. “We had some kids like Matt Knudtson who were with us last year and know what to do. Brandon Loth played center last year and moved to right tackle.

Tyler Guerrero was the backup center last year and fit right in with everything we were doing. We worked together. We knew what to do out there and knew what to do with the game plan and then would go out

and rep through it in practice and go through all the scenarios and possibilities we would see. We would watch film and communicate what our people would do.”

Qunitas said he was in a similar position last year on the offensive line in terms of fitting in with established veterans. “Last year I meshed very well with the offensive line,” he said. “They knew each other and I was filling in at right guard. They welcomed me.”

Quintas played right guard this season. “From last year I improved on my footwork,” he said. “Last year I felt I was a little slow. I worked on trapping and trying to see blitzes better and moving people around more.”

Qunitas also took pride in the fact the Warriors’ offensive line did a good job preventing quarterback sacks.

“We didn’t give up a lot of sacks,” he said. “When we did it was because of simple mistakes and us not having our heads on swivels.”

Qunitas added it was a pleasure blocking for Willowbrook’s skill-position players, headlined by Jessen.

IC Catholic Prep wrestlers busy during offseason Knights return plenty of talent, including defending state champion Bianchini

It’s been a busy offseason for the IC Catholic Prep wrestling team.

“We had a productive off-season training, competing, learning and collaborating,” said new IC Catholic Prep coach Kevin Sliva, who was an assistant coach last year. “We continue to strive for excellence to build and refine our program for the future.”

In addition to earning a fifth consecutive IHSA team academic achievement award in the spring, three IC Catholic Prep wrestlers competed in the Illinois freestyle state tournament, a qualifier for the Illinois national team. Joey Bianchini, who won a state title for the Knights last year, took second and earned his second spot on the national team after having earlier qualified in Greco-Roman. David Vargas took third and Victor Vargas also competed.

In June, Bianchini was selected to represent Team Illinois in the Greco-Roman national team duals where his team beat Minnesota for the title. Bianchini won his match in the championship contest.

In July, Bianchini made it to the round of 32 in both wrestling styles at the junior national tournament held in Fargo, N.D. In October, Victor Vargas was crowned Champion of the Conflict at Carver tournament in Iowa City.

In October, Bianchini knocked off a previously nationally ranked wrestler in the semifinals and then a current nationally ranked wrestler in the championship of the 2017 USA Wrestling preseason nationals tournament at Northern Iowa. He won seven matches in a row.

In mid-October, coaches Sliva and Corey Stanley attended the USA Wrestling Silver Coaches College at the U.S. Olympic Training Center campus in Colorado Springs, Colo.

They were two of 50 coaches across the nation selected to attend and received advanced classroom and hands-on mat instruction regarding nutrition, sports psychology, peak performance principles, risk management, technique, rules and other wrestling-related curriculum from some of the top instructors in the world. The college is one criterion needed to obtain the elite USA Wrestling Silver Coaching Certificate.

The Knights are coming off a 2016-2017 season where they went 10-16 and took seventh place in the Metro Suburban Conference (highest placement in school history), while having three wrestlers earn all-MSC honors (again, a school record).

Bianchini, now a senior, will wrestle at 138 pounds. He went 38-1 last year en route to winning a Class 1A state title. He’s a two-time all-state performer and three-time state qualifier.

Victor Vargas, also a senior, will be at 195 and 220. He went 36-12 last year and took sixth in the state, earning all-state honors. Joe Scott III, a sophomore, is at 170 pounds.

“They were very talented,” he said. “It was fun to see our guys hit our seams and score touchdowns. It was a lot of fun watching them run around.”

Qunitas had a good idea Willowbrook could be successful once again this season.

“I felt like we could do it again and we did it,” he said. “This season was very special. We won the conference title this year after being very close last year. This year we weren’t leaving without that.”

Qunitas also has a thought or two on why the program has enjoyed its recent success. “A lot of people buy into what the coaches are teaching,”

he said. “Coach (Nick) Hildreth focuses on the culture and guys were always in the weight room after practice. We all believed in what we were doing. The coaches helped us a lot with that.”

Qunitas noted he’s thinking about going into the physical therapy field after high school. “I want to help people out,” he said. “I’ve seen what physical therapists do for football players and I feel like I can help people out like that.”

Junior Kemon Reese will wrestle at 182 and was 16-8 as a sophomore last year. Junior Michael Johnson will be at the 220- and 285-pound divisions after going 10-2 as a sophomore last year.

David Vargas, now a junior, also will go between 220 and 285. He was 24-13 last year and made the sectional and was an all-conference selection.

Freshman Kyle Franklin, who will rotate between 160 and 170 pounds, finished fourth at the IKWF state tournament last season.

Bianchini and Victor Vargas are the team captains.

In the first IWCOA.net Illinois state high-school rankings, Bianchini is ranked No. 2 at 138 pounds, while

It’s also the second year in a row IC Catholic Prep shutout its opponent in the Class 3A state-championship game. Last year, Carlinville fell victim to the Knights to the tune of a 43-0 loss.
