The Villa Park Board of Trustees will once again entertain a vote on the 60-plus year-old swimming pool, located at 1000 S. Ardmore Ave. This time, the vote is whether or not to demolish the pool, which was closed for the summer season after a February board vote to cease funding for needed repairs of the facility.

“I loved Lufkin Pool,” Trustee Chris Aiello said at the time, “but it wouldn’t be a responsible use of Village money to keep maintaining it.”

Resolution to demolish After the board voted to close Lufkin, a vote to demolish was required. The board decided in February to let the pool facilities stay dormant during the swim season and address the question in the winter.

“Three months is a short time to come up with all possible solutions,” Aiello said. “The pool stays closed eight months of the year anyway. Let’s see if anything comes up and we can look at this [demolition] again in November.”

The time has arrived and at the Nov. 12 village board meeting, Trustees will do just that -- address the demolition of Lufkin Pool.

District receives scholarship funds from blood drive During the Oct. 15th District 88 Board of Education meeting, Addison Community Blood Drive Chairperson Judy Socha presented District 88 with a check from Vitalant for $7,250 and thanked the Board and administration for their support.

The money is from blood drives hosted during the 2017-18 school

year at Addison Trail and Willowbrook and goes to scholarships for District 88 students. District 88 received the check for collecting 505 pints of blood. Each unit of blood supports three lives, which means 1,515 lives have been supported thanks to the generosity of those donors.

Symphony musicians to perform at Mayslake The Elmhurst Symphony Musicians in Performance at Mayslake series opens its 2018-19 season with “Bolling: Toot Suite” on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

From Sept. 23 to Oct. 8, District 88 welcomed and hosted 21 students, two teachers and the principal from Helmholtzschule in Frankfurt, Germany.

Their visit was part of the German American Partnership Program (GAPP) – Student Exchange, which provides information about cultural, social and political life in Germany through encouraging intercultural dialogue and enabling cultural involvement. During their time with the district, the group members shadowed Addison Trail and Willowbrook students, staff members and administrators, toured the buildings and viewed extracurricular activities such as athletic and performing arts events. They also visited Chicago landmarks. The students from Germany presented to Addison Trail classes as well on topics such as culinary specialties of Hesse (the state in which Frankfurt is located), the German school system and economy and a comparison of the history of migration, immigration and multiculturalism in the U.S. and Germany.

District 88 hosted a celebration to greet the group on Sept. 23. During the Sept. 24 District 88 Board of Education meeting, Board President Donna Craft Cain, along with the District 88 administration, presented Helmholtzschule Principal Gerrit Ulmke and teachers Johannes Falter and Jana Knopp with plaques and certificates in appreciation of their partnership. And on Oct. 8, the group gathered for a farewell celebration.

By Roger Ruthhart Saukenuk was wellknown as one of the largest Native American villages in North America, but one of its residents, the warrior Black Hawk, was even better known.

Although born in Saukenuk, which was located where Rock Island stands today, his father Pyesa and mother Summer Rain and other relatives could trace their ancestry back thousands of years. According to their oral traditions, both the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes were living in Canada 12,000 years ago at the time of the last glacial retreat. Many centuries later they were displaced from their Canadian home by the Iroquois.

The Sauk and Meskwaki migrated through New England and New York to the area near Niagara Falls. By 1640, the Meskwaki had settled at the west end of Lake Erie, near present-day Detroit, and the Sauk near Saginaw Bay in Michigan.

In 1701, the decades-long war began between the French and the Meskwaki, which almost led to the tribe’s extinction. Weakened, they joined the Sauk and together they migrated to the Mississippi River, where for nearly 100 years the tribes lived in their own villages and farmed, hunted and traded.

The two tribes were separate nations. The Meskwaki were the smaller of the two, numbering about 1,600. In Rock Island, the Meskwaki had a village located across from Arsenal Island in what is now downtown Rock Island. In the days before the locks and dams, the river was 17 feet lower than today. Fort Armstrong loomed 30 feet above the river, according to Beth Carvey, retired historian at the Black Hawk State Historic Site.

Over the years, the Sauk had several cities called Saukenuk.

In 1808, the decision was made by the Sauk nation to consolidate smaller villages into the city now known as Saukenuk, located near the Rock River in Rock Island. Its location is near the Black Hawk State Historic Site, home to the John Hauberg Indian Museum which commemorates the lifestyle of those who lived at Saukenuk.

According to Ferrell Anderson, a local archaeologist, the Meskwaki village was made up of two rows of huts—about 30 total—located where downtown Rock Island is today.

Indian agent at Rock Island, wrote a report detailing the Indian villages within his jurisdiction.

Two miles up from the mouth of the Rock River was the “grand Sauk village where the principal chiefs, braves and warriors reside, ... and where all the affairs pertaining to the Sauk Nation of Indians were transacted,” Forsyth wrote. “Indeed, I have seen many Indian villages, but I never saw such a large one or such a populous one.”

Behind the town, on the side of the ridge, were the Sauk gardens which Black Hawk indicated extended about 2 miles. Forsyth estimated the Sauk had about 800 acres under cultivation.

Saukenuk had a north-south and an east-west esplanade that formed a “T.” The east-west road was defined by the river and the bluffs. It intersected with a longer north-south avenue that was lined with many lodges. At one end was a gathering area and the council lodge. We know there were as many as 100 or more lodges at one point, and Saukenuk was home to as many as 6,000 – perhaps more.

For most of the years that the Sauk and Meskwaki lived on these lands, their life was an idyllic one.

They lived peacefully in their villages with occasional skirmishes with other Indian tribes. They traded with the French and fought alongside the British, providing a lifestyle that was partially Indian and partially European.

The Sauk lived what might be described as an affluent lifestyle

by Indian standards. Many of the Sauk dressed in European clothes and hunted with rifles. When they did use arrows, they had metal tips, not stone. Their village on the shore of the Rock River was a thriving metropolis during the summer. In fall, crops from their farms were stored in food pits and they crossed the river and wintered in southern Iowa and Missouri – returning to Saukenuk in the spring.

Unknowingly, the end of this lifestyle had been assured in 1804 when a few chiefs — possibly plied with alcohol — signed a treaty in St. Louis in which they agreed to move west of the Mississippi River in exchange for $1,000 a year, at such time as settlers arrived seeking to live on the land.

In 1830 the Sauk and Fox were ordered to leave their villages in Illinois and move to Iowa. Black Hawk and others refused to accept the terms of the 1804 treaty that the Sauk and Meskwaki had not been involved with.

In the winter of 1830, the tribes left but faced a winter of near starvation. In spring 1831, Black Hawk defied the government order and returned to Saukenuk and planted crops.

The settlers who had now occupied the old village were alarmed. Illinois Gov. John Reynolds sent 1,500 men to move the tribes out. On June 20 the volunteer army moved on Saukenuk.

When the militia arrived at Saukenuk, they found fresh footprints and fires still burning.

The Sauk had left without a fight.

The militia burned the lodges, destroyed the crops and vandalized the main cemetery and dug up graves, according to a letter from the new Indian agent, Felix St. Vrain, to Indian superintendent William Clark.

Fearing he would be pursued, Black Hawk went to Fort Armstrong and sued for peace. He got it, under the terms that he would stay out of Illinois.

Peace lasted until the next winter when the Indians, unable to grow crops in the less tillable land, once again faced starvation. In 1832 the Indians again crossed into Illinois, marking the second year of the Black Hawk War. There were numerous skirmishes

and Black Hawk’s people, on the verge of starvation, fled into Wisconsin. They were finally trapped at Bad Axe Creek where they were slaughtered. Black Hawk and other leaders were captured and the militia killed old men, women and children, as well as 150 braves.

“When I call to mind the scenes of my youth and those of later days – and reflect that the theatre on which these were acted had been so long the home of my fathers, who now slept on the hills around it, I could not bring my mind to consent to leave this country … for any earthly consideration,” Black Hawk wrote in his autobiography.

County Board poses referenda questions on Nov. 6 ballot Voters cautioned about double negatives in referenda verbiage

The DuPage County Board has put three tax-related referendum questions on the Nov. 6th General Election ballot.

It should be noticed that the questions are not binding, but rather, are seeking voters’ opinions on certain issues.

Two of the questions are seeking voters’ input on revenue-raising proposals being debated in Springfield.

One asks voters to weigh in on a proposal to help reduce state debt.

The other asks for opinions on an alternative method to fund transportation projects. The third question focuses on the County’s Accountability, Consolidation, and Transparency (ACT) Initiative.

“Responses to these questions will provide the Board with important feedback and guidance as various proposals are debated in Springfield,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “Our residents already face some of the highest property taxes in the nation.”

4-H teaches leadership, builds character 4-H members in this county joined the 6 million youth across the country in celebrating National 4-H Week Oct. 7-13. 4-H youth development programs provide hands-on learning activities for youth in Illinois and throughout the country. 4-H youth programs focus on leadership, citizenship and life skills.

Every county in Illinois has a 4-H program, which is operated through University of Illinois Extension. 4-H club membership is open to youth

aged 8 to 18. Youth 5 to 7 years of age may join the 4-H Cloverbud program.

There are several ways to participate in 4-H. Youth may join 4-H clubs, coordinated by local screened adult volunteers. Each club decides how often it meets, the location of its meetings and the activities held during the meeting. Members may select from dozens of project areas to study while they build leadership, teamwork, cooperation, deci-

sion-making and communication skills.

Youth may also choose to focus on a very specific project area and join a club specifically related to that one project, said Deanna Roby, University of Illinois Extension educator.

State Rep seeks to stiffen penalties against bail jumpers

In response to a significant spike in “failure to appear in court” cases in DuPage County, State Representative Deanne Mazzochi is championing legislation that strengthens penalties for bail jumpers and improves public safety.

“Since the new Bail Reform Act took effect on January 1 of this year, DuPage County has experienced an alarming increase in the number of instances where accused people who are out on bail are skipping court-ordered appearances,” said Mazzochi.

“For Category A offenses, which include serious felonies like domestic battery, burglary and aggravated assault, we saw an 83% increase in failures to appear, and for Category B offenses we saw a 71% increase.

This tells me that we are not properly incentivizing people to show up in court. Especially in instances where an accused person knows he or she is guilty, they are deciding they would rather take their chances and flee than appear in court to answer to the charges brought against them.”

Through HB 5980, proposed changes to the Bail Reform Act include: • Individuals who are out on bail and fail to appear in court would be charged with a failure to appear offense of the same Class (instead of the next lower Class) of the original crime with which he/she has been charged.

• Failure to appear offenders would not be eligible for probation for bail jumping.

Citing a recent board decision to fund a Parks & Recreation feasibility study to include all Village amenities (from Twin Lakes Park, to Jefferson Pool and all other recreation facilities), the Save Lufkin group intends to show up at the meeting to ask Trustees to keep Lufkin intact.

The press release from Save Lufkin reads in part as follows: “The group will remind the board that the Parks and Recreation Commission suggested that Lufkin not be demolished while a feasibility study is underway. The study will include market analysis and resident input on existing facilities and new proposals.”

The group has also been actively

trying to get the pool back online.

“The Save Lufkin Group will ask the board not to demolish the pool as they continue to raise funds to restore Lufkin’s operational capability,” the release read.

According to the group, Lufkin Pool “remains closed every year from September to June” and leaving the facility until spring won’t add any expenses for the Village. They want the facilities study data to be gathered and analyzed before deciding to demolish the pool.

Willowbrook football team wins playoff opener Sam Tumilty passes for 343 yards and three touchdowns

It’s on to the second round of the playoffs for the Willowbrook football team.

The Warriors downed Chicago Lincoln Park 35-0 in the first round of the Class 7A state playoffs in Villa Park.

Willowbrook moved to 10-0 on the season and now has a 5-2 record in the playoffs over the last three seasons.

Willowbrook now is within one victory of tying the program record for most wins in a season. The 1975 team went 11-1. The Warriors are now 28-6 over the last three years under coach Nick Hildreth.

The Warriors will remain at home in the second round after No. 12 seed Maine West beat No. 21-seed Benet Academy at home 20-18. With both teams having hosted a playoff con-

test, the team with the higher seed hosts in the second round. Willowbrook is the No. 5 overall seed in the 32-team Class 7A bracket. Maine West brings a 9-1 mark to Villa Park either Friday or Saturday (check IHSA.org for exact day and time).

In the win against Lincoln Park, Sam Tumilty passed for 343 yards on 12 of 19 completions. He threw three touchdown passes. He also ran for 40 yards on seven carries and scored one rushing touchdown.

Deandre Holliday caught six passes for 165 yards and two scores, while C.J. Harris caught two passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. Everett Stubblefield caught one ball for 35 yards and Scotty Tumilty had three catches for 93 yards.

Willowbrook has now scored 337 points in 10 games, while surrendering only 92. It was Willowbrook’s third shutout of the season and fifth instance of holding an opponent to single digits in scoring in a contest.

For the year, Sam Tumilty has passed for 1,985 yards to go with 23 touchdowns against only three in-

terceptions. He’s also ran for 1,099 yards on 134 carries and has scored 16 touchdowns on the ground.

Holliday has caught 30 passes for 656 yards and 10 touchdowns, while

Scotty Tumilty has caught 35 passes for 536 yards and seven touchdowns.

Moe Ayesh, a sophomore, leads the team in tackles with 83 and has 5.5 tackles for loss. Sam Tumilty has

West, out of Des Plaines, is a member of the Central Suburban Conference North Division, which it won with a 5-0 record. The Warriors (same nickname as Willowbrook) have scored 397 points in 10 games and have allowed 123. Maine West has only played three teams with winning records and has a 2-1 mark.

The Warriors lost to Hersey 51-28. Hersey was 8-1 in the regular season. Maine West defeated Glenbrook North 46-13 and then downed Benet Academy in the playoffs. Maine West has scored 40 points or more in five games and 50 or more in two games.

Up next: The winner of this contest heads to the quarterfinals (Willowbrook has made the quarterfinals in each of the last two seasons) against either No. 13 Moline (9-1) or No. 4 Batavia (10-0). Regardless of outcome of the Moline-Batavia game, if Willowbrook wins against Maine West, it will hit the road for the quarterfinals because Moline has only hosted once compared to Willowbrook’s two home games and Batavia has the higher seed (4 vs. Willowbrook’s 5). Both Batavia and Willowbrook have hosted two playoff games.

Addison Trail girls volleyball team concludes season Blazers record two late-season wins over tough competition

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team wrapped up its season after a recent 25-23, 25-22 loss to Glenbard North in a regional semifinal contest.

Addison Trail finished the season 17-19 overall and ended up in third place in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 4-2 re-

cord.

“Our team showed tremendous growth at the end of October as a result of a sense of urgency in the gym,” said Addison Trail coach Dan Styler.

Addison Trail finished the regular season with a pair of key wins.

The Blazers defeated Fenwick in non-conference play. Fenwick went into the playoffs as a No. 1 sectional seed.

The next day, the Blazers beat Wheaton-Warrenville South. Styler

noted Wheaton-Warrenville South was seeded six places higher than Addison Trail in the sectional.

“These wins gave us a boost heading into the playoffs,” he said.

Styler said the playoff matchup against Glenbard North featured plenty of highlights. “Both teams battled from the start and the momentum exchanged back and forth,” he said. “It was a match where one less error on our end could have changed the outcome of the match.

Glenbard North was resilient and

closed out both sets better than we did. Nevertheless, we are proud of the effort of our kids.”

On the statistical front, Katrina Bielanski led the team with 39 services aces. Jess D’Ambrose and Sam Pociecha each had 36 aces, while Nina Muell had 35 aces and Ally Severino had 30. Addison Trail finished the season with 204 aces against 161 errors.

D’Ambrose led the team with 214 kills. Muell finished with 198 kills, while Bielanski had 128 kills. Mia

Johnson had 113 kills and hit .287, while Severino had 107 kills.

Severino and Johnson led the way in blocking. Severino had 37 total blocks, while Johnson had 36.

Fenton’s Elizondo qualifies for state cross country meet

While the Fenton boys cross-country team did not qualify for this weekend’s Class 2A state finals meet, the Bison will still have representation at the meet.

Junior Sam Elizondo took third overall at the Class 2A Fenton sectional in Bensenville and earned one of seven individual qualifying spots in Peoria Saturday.

Elizondo covered the layout in 16:09.

Fenton finished seventh as a team with 209 points.

Nathan Exconde finished 40th with a time of 17:41.6. Chris Zavala was 46th with a time of 17:52.

Sophomore Matthew Sisto was 50th in 17:57.8. Sophomore Chris Kovich was 78th with a time of 18:56.5.

Sophomore Juan Sosa was 79th in 18:57.6 and freshman Aaron Paz was 80th in 18:59.2.

Earlier, Fenton qualified for the sectional after taking fourth at the Class 2A St. Viator regional at Melas Park in Mount Prospect.

“While this was not the desired result, the team ran well enough to qualify for the sectional meet,” said Fenton coach Patrick Fritsch.

Elizondo finished third and Fritsch noted it was the fifth-fastest time a Fenton runner has ever registered on that course despite wind gusts that day of more than 50 miles per hour.

Published in March and coinciding with the state’s bicentennial, Creating the Land of Lincoln: The History and Constitutions of Illinois, 1778-1870 recounts how three constitutions shaped the Prairie State we know today.

In his book, Cicero sheds light on the vital debates of delegates who, freed from electoral necessity, revealed the opinions, prejudices, sentiments and dreams of Illinoisans at critical junctures in state history. He analyzes decisions large

and small that fostered momentous social and political changes in Illinois.

Cicero is uniquely qualified to tell this story. He is a senior partner at Chicago law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP and served as an elected delegate for the Sixth Illinois Constitutional Convention in 1969-70.

He drafted the Illinois Constitution of 1970.

“I felt a deep personal connection to these Ukrainian families because I was [there] as part of a group of sixty people from the U.S. on a Peace and Friendship Mission. Though we did not know it while we were there, the Chernobyl #4 nuclear reactor was spewing dangerous amounts of radioactive particles into the atmosphere for several days after the initial explosion.”

All these years later, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus are still dealing with the radiation exposure which has been linked to death, chronic health issues and birth deformities among thousands of people.

And Patricia Cox is still providing humanitarian aid.

Her book tells the story of what happened with their tour group and what happened after she returned to the Unit-

ed States. Patricia was grateful to be able to get on a plane and go home. Yet she knew that thousands of people there were never able to return to theirs and that fact haunted her. Feeling a call to “Do Something,” Patricia founded the Ukrainian-American Family Network, a cross-cultural humanitarian aid project, one she still operates to this day.

CHAIN REACTION tells the unique story of this incredible project, as well as the stories, in their own words, of the families who were evacuated. Patricia has become fairy godmother and long-distance grandmother to these families. She writes that her book offers “a multi-leveled understanding about this catastrophic event. There is the personal point of view of, “Oh my God, what was it like to be 60 miles from an exploding nuclear plant?” There is also the universal human question to try to understand the complexity of, “Where do you begin to build your life again from nothing?”

target very specific needs, such as psychological support, vitamins, and medicines, clothes and shoes. Our hope was that this aid would help maintain some of the victims of the Chernobyl disaster, and help them move toward a healthier life.”

Patricia just returned (September 2018) from yet another trip to visit the families and this time to also gift them a copy of her book along with the vitamins and medicines she ships every year. She has indeed helped hundreds of families move toward a healthier life and they were thrilled to see their pictures and stories in print. They told it was the best gift yet.

Now more than ever it is important to read such books and recognize that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Patricia’s goal in writing her book was to empower others to Do Something, whatever tugs your heart to help someone else. The Fenton boys soccer team is just to one win away from earning a spot in the Class 2A state finals after winning the recent Class 2A Chicago Noble/ITW Speer sectional title.

Fenton defeated host Noble/ITW Speer 1-0 for the sectional championship.

It was Fenton’s first-ever sectional title.

Fenton improved to 13-7-1 with the victory.

Fenton faced Crystal Lake South in the Class 2A Burlington Central supersectional near Elgin earlier this week. If Fenton won that contest it will play in the Class 2A state finals Friday at 1 p.m. at Hoffman Estates High School against either Springfield or Waterloo Gibault Catholic.

Fenton reached the sectional final after a 4-2 win over Chicago Mather. Fenton led 1-0 at halftime and scored three goals in the second half.

Ethan Rojas had two goals, while Branny Salas and Ivan Jaramillo each had a goal and two assists. Carlos Popoca made two saves in goal to earn the win.

Life without the letter A/a

All was admirable and acceptable – advantageous even – that a.m. I arrived at my work area early, adhered to my agenda and had accomplished an abundance of article assembly by afternoon.

And then I had lunch – avocado salad with apples and almonds (apricot dressing).

Upon finishing my food, I returned directly to my computer, only to discover the problem with the keys.

One of them no longer functioned when pressed. I punched it. Nothing.

Punched down twice. Still nothing.

Sigh.

It was the “A.” I no longer had air, admiration, altruism, the ampersand or Amazon. I felt annihilated, or I would have if I had access to the appropriate letters.

I tried troubleshooting, without success. I pulled the key from its spot to remove dust or dirt from under it. No luck. I couldn’t continue typing without the lost letter. Or I didn’t wish to.

It hindered my morning progress immensely. I needed to restore my A/a.

When you lose your A/a you know without question the time is nigh to order your new keybo*rd. Trouble is, I’m finicky when it comes to keybo*rds.

You get used to the specifics of one; conforming to the new model is often testy. To further dirty the complexity of my problem, my keybo*rd is built specifically for my type of computer so picking one up from the superstore isn’t possible. It must be ordered online.

cough up the fees for quick shipping, I found myself confronted with the dire truth of living with my non A/a condition for 3 to 5 business twenty-four hour periods.

I decided to try to cope. Life would go on. So would business. But things might be difficult. Would be difficult.

My plight required discretion with word choice. Substitutions would be commonly needed – required, even.

While waiting for my keyboard, I decided to check if there was any information online about living without A/a.

It turns out non-use of specific letters in writing is actually a thing. It’s called a lipogram. Entire books have been written using this technique, although it’s easier to avoid lesser-used letters like Z/z or X/x. A/a proves to be a bit more of a challenge.

You don’t appreciate a letter until it no longer exists. Life without A/a created a new world for me. Not a new world, per se; the world itself continued to both spin and turn, but without A/a both the earth and nature were goners. The universe, however, remained in its entirety.

Most states would cease to be without A/a. Wisconsin would be one of

only 15 to survive. And they’d get to keep their beer and cheese. Thank goodness for that.

Other things to be thankful for: we’d still have Kentucky and bourbon, Tennessee and country music, Mississippi and the river. We’d keep New York but lose Times Square. Maybe it could become Times Circle?

America (sigh) would be no more.

The alphabet would of course be out of the question. Don’t even get me started.

Mom would still be mom. Dad simply dd, which before demise of A/a had been relegated to a bra size.

Kids could still go to school and study history, English and science but math would be a void equation. No one could ace a test and a grade of B would be the best anyone could hope for.

Without A/a we could drive SUVs but not minivans, trucks but not cars.

People could have feet but no hands, eyes but not ears, knees but not ankles, a nose without a face to put it on.

We’d have the sun without heat, clouds without rain, wind without air.

I could go on and on. Suffice to say that A/a has fully infiltrated the English language and we’d be lost without it. Well, not lost, per se, but certainly adrift, amiss and addled.

Thankfully, after about a week, 3 to 5 business days passed and my new keyboard arrived. I set it up and typed a few words to express how I was feeling: joyous, merry, gleeful, contented, delighted and awesome. Most definitely awesome.

The Knights were 49-8 winners over Chicago Raby in a game played at Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

IC Catholic Prep moved to 10-0 with the win and won its 11th playoff game in a row. The Knights are in search of their third state championship in a row.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White unveiled a new distracted driving video. The video, which was written, produced and features high school students, was shown during a traffic safety event hosted by the Illinois Partners for Traffic Safety at the House of Hope in Chicago. The video will be distributed to high schools statewide to help address the dangers of distracted driving.

“The goal has always been to save lives,” White said. “We have seen teen driving deaths drop by more than 50 percent in Illinois, but there is still more work to be done. This video will make an impact on young people because it was written and produced by young people. It shows what can happen when you drive distracted. My hope is that it will make teens to think twice about picking up the phone while driving.”

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens (15 to 18 years old) in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Journal of Adolescent Health reports 42 percent of teens text while driving. The video, which was produced

by True Star Foundation After School Matters Summer Jobs Program supported through a State Farm grant, will be available to more than 6,000 driver’s education classes in Illinois.

More than 500 Chicago-area high school students attended the safety fair, which included rollover and driving simulators, a golf cart driving range, motorcycle awareness presentations and a performance by the Jesse White Tumbling Team.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, since White’s efforts to overhaul the state’s graduated driver licensing (GDL) laws took effect in 2008, teen driving fatalities have dropped by 51 percent. Many cite White’s nationally heralded GDL program for the dramatic decrease in fatalities.

Illinois’ GDL program better prepares teen drivers by giving them more time to obtain valuable experience while under the watchful eye of an adult, limiting in-car distractions and requiring teens to earn their way from one stage to the next by avoiding traffic convictions.

State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) and state Rep. Peter Breen (R-Lombard) are once again partnering with the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the local Lilac Post 5815 for their fourth annual “Support Our Troops” collection drive. Items collected throughout November will be delivered to military personnel serving overseas near or before Christmas.

The Nybo/Breen shared legislative office at 929 S. Main St., Suite 105A in Lombard, will serve as the dropoff location for items to be donated to U.S. troops. Donations will be accepted through.
