Seven flavors were selected as finalists and came together over the weekend to compete for a spot at the Grand Finale of the Gelato World Tour in Italy. A panel of expert culinary judges (50 percent) combined with the public vote (50 percent) decided the outcome of the competition. The winners were announced at the Bon Appetit Culinary Stage at the close of Chicago Gourmet event.

Montini Catholic hosts sixth Grade Field Day for local grade schools Montini Catholic High School in Lombard hosted its annual 6th Grade Field Day Sept. 20 as part of its 2016 Homecoming Week festivities.

Every year, the school invites sixth graders from local schools to visit and enjoy a day full of activities and sporting challenges at Duffy Memorial Stadium. This year 225 students from St. Pius X Parish School, Sacred Heart, All Saints,

Ss. Cyril and Methodius, Our Lady of Peace and St. Dominicks participated in the action packed morning where they started out as special guests at the Bronco’s Homecoming Pep Rally.

Each year Montini Catholic’s senior fall sport athletes host the junior high students and mentor them as they participate in the day’s many activities. Events include a highly competitive tug-of-war champion-

ship, field goal kicking, football and softball tossing, obstacle course races, pyramid building and a much anticipated 40 yard dash.

“We look forward to this day ev-

ery year,” said Admissions Coordinator, Eric Brechtel. “We get the opportunity to meet lots of great kids from across the area, and they get a chance to visit our school, compete

in friendly competitions, and make new friends from other schools.”

The day was topped off with a pizza lunch and awards ceremony held in the gym.

Lucy at Foxy’s Laundromat to retire Washed blankets for local P.A.D.S. site

Foxy is Lucy’s dog, the mascot at Foxy’s Laundromat, which has been located in the strip mall on the southwest corner of St. Charles and Villa Avenue in Villa Park for 20 years.

retire after selling the business to new owners.

Lucy will be remembered not only for offering a place to wash clothes and share conversation, but also for her efforts in the community. According to volunteers at the local P.A.D.S. homeless shelter at Elmhurst Presbyterian Church, Lucy graciously volunteered to wash all the blankets every week.

Also, during a drive to urge people throughout the community to collect their spare change and donate it toward programs for the homeless, Lucy collected $132.

She will be missed, but friends and patrons alike wish Lucy and Foxy all the best in their golden years. Thanks for the memories.

Reality show films in a Garden Village business

Patrons of the Funky Java Coffee House on St. Charles Road were turned away on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The popular Villa Park meeting place was closed for a unique reason: MTV was filming an episode of the popular “Catfish” reality show at the business!

“There is no air-date yet for this episode,” one production assistant told The Independent. “We are currently airing season 5 and this show is for season 6.”

The show, which is from the producers of the documentary film “Catfish” follows couples who have interacted strictly via computer and phone as they meet in real life for the first time.

Sometimes the relationship turns out to be true love, and sometimes the meeting reveals a completely dif-

ferent person than the one portrayed on the computer.

According to the show’s website, the definition of Catfish in this context is: Catfish [kat-fish] verb: To pretend to be someone you’re not online by posting false information, such as someone else’s pictures, on social media sites usually with the intention of getting someone to fall in love with you.

“It was fun watching them set up the cameras and prepare the shop for shooting the show,” said Funky Java barrister Lexi Marcyniuk, who chatted with customer’s outside while the MTV crew was filming.

Funky Java owner Larry Poggi said a location scout from the show approached him about filming the show and he had no objections.

“They were very professional and assured me they would leave the shop exactly as they found it,” Poggi said, “The whole filming only took about four or five hours and didn’t disturb my regular business too much. I’m glad they chose The Funky Java for their show and can’t wait to see the episode.”

Her live-in boyfriend was later arrested and charged with her murder.

On Thursday, Sept. 29 at about 8:15 a.m., an unsuspecting employee of White Pines Golf Course in Bensenville arrived at work to find the body of a deceased woman at the entrance to the club.

Following an investigation and an autopsy, police discovered that the woman was about 37 years old and had apparently expired from a knife wound to her back. Earlier that morning, Cook County Sheriff officials were alerted to a possible homicide on the 11500 block of Grand Avenue in Cook County. Police later

determined the two incidents were believed to be connected.

After further investigation, authorities arrested and charged Johnathan Condrey, 44, with first-degree murder after confirming the woman, who has not yet been identified, was his girlfriend and had allegedly died at his hand. Condrey and the woman lived together at her home on the above-mentioned location on Grand Avenue in unincorporated Cook County.

About 5 a.m., the two had reportedly had an argument during which he allegedly stabbed her with a knife in her back.

Reports indicate that Condrey took the woman’s body to the golf course and left it there. Condrey was scheduled for a bond hearing on Saturday, the results of which were unknown at press time.

Empty nest time quickly approaching

Most of my friends are doing it.

I’ve always been a little stunted so I’m not quite there yet. It will come soon enough.

The next stage.

From what I can tell, it’s one of

rediscovery, independence and running to the store together for milk.

(Because you can.)

I still have kids at home. I stretched this whole parenthood thing out about as far as you can

stretch it. My friends who were more streamlined with their timelines are finding themselves with spare bedrooms, full refrigerators and empty nests. And, for the most part, they are enjoying it.

This gives me hope for my own future happiness. If they can adapt, so can I. I already feel the winds of change sweeping in. On weekends, the members of our flock who still live

Sippy cups and cartoons and strawberry milk in bed have become things of the past.

For our part, my husband and I try to sleep in, but rarely make it more than an hour past our regular waking time. Since our offspring are all capable of getting up and finding their own breakfast (or lunch, given their sleep habits) we experience the freedom of an unencumbered day. The hours stretch out enticingly in front of us. What shall we do? Where shall we go?

One of our current favorite Saturday morning destinations is the home improvement store where we walk the aisles and discuss home improvement possibilities. Afterward, we’ll stop at the fleet supply store to peruse the various implements and other necessities we probably won’t ever need. Sometimes they have fuzzy little baby ducks and chicks there in large metal tubs. We talk about the logistics of raising chickens and the benefits of having access to an infinite supply of fresh eggs. Then, if we need milk or bread or just want to get something fun for dinner, we’ll head to the grocery store. We linger in the meat section.

Because we can.

All these everyday activities, for now, feel luxurious. Out of necessity, we used to split our time and attention. One ran errands while the other watched the brood. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that the Second District Appellate Court of Illinois has affirmed the conviction of former Forest Preserve District of DuPage County (FPDDC) employee David Tepper, 52 (d.o.b.

11/15/1963). Justice Hutchinson delivered the judgment of the court with Justices McLaren and Zenoff concurring.

On Oct. 1, 2015, Judge Liam Brennan found Tepper guilty of Unlawful Participation and Official Misconduct, both Class 3 Felonies. Brennan sentenced him to 180 days in the Dupage County Jail and two years of probation. He was also ordered to pay $104,572 in court costs and fines. He has remained free pending the Appellate Court’s ruling.

Tepper’s conviction was based upon allegations that as an employee of the FPDDC, Tepper gained authorization from the FPDDC Board to enter the FPDDC into a contract with USA Digital without informing the Board that he also worked for USA Digital. Once the contract was agreed upon by both parties, Tepper collected approximately $80,000 from USA Digital as a commission fee. Brennan’s verdict followed an eight-day-long trial which concluded on September 23, 2015.

In his appeal, Tepper first argued that the trial court erred in that a conviction of the offense of unlawful participation could not be based on an omission of fact – Tepper’s failure to inform the Board that he also worked for USA Digital - but rather would have to be based on some concrete actions taken by Tepper to deceive the Board. Tepper also argued that his employment with USA Digital did not constitute an intent to defraud the FPDDC because the FPDDC did not sustain financial loss. In fact, Tepper argued, the FPDDC had received services for which it contracted. In addressing Tepper’s first argument, the Appellate Court found that Tepper’s deception was carried out in large part by his silence about

The Village needed to accept the easement for the work to be done. The item was unanimously voted to be moved to the Formal Agenda for passage later in the evening.

MARY CARWELL, 92 On Sept. 17, 2016 at the age of 92, Mary Carwell died peacefully at her home in Lombard, surrounded by her family. Known as “Gmom” to her grandchildren and friends, Mary always had a welcoming smile and was ready to feed anyone who came through her door. She loved music, chocolate éclairs, the Chicago Cubs, and going to HiView Restaurant with her family.

Mary was born Mary Onischuk on March 3, 1924 in Osceola Mills, Pa., to Andrew and Sophie Onischuk.

She married Glen Mansfield Carwell on December 16, 1944 at St. Michael Russian Orthodox Church in Newark, NJ. They moved to Chicago in 1946 then to Villa Park in 1951. Mary supported the Villa Park Library, Cubs Scout Pack 38, Boy Scout Pack 138 and the Franklin School PTA. Mary and Glen were married for 49 years until Glen’s death in 1993. Mary was the last surviving member of her seven brothers and sisters.

Mary is survived by her sons Robert (Mary) Carwell, Kenneth (Kathy) Carwell and Glen (Ann) Carwell as well as her grandchildren Kelly (Dan) Moy, Erin Carwell, Emily Carwell, and Jacob (Kara) Carwell.

Mary was extremely proud of her grandchildren and their athletic pursuits while attending Timothy Christian, cheering them on and hosting their teams for spaghetti dinners.

Montini Catholic High School in Lombard took advantage of a healthy Homecoming Game crowd on Friday, September 23rd to honor its 2016 IHSA 3A Softball Championship team. The team, including several former seniors, now alumni, marched onto the field along with their 3A Championship trophy and were honored prior to the varsity game. The Lady Bronco softball team ended their historic season on a high note by capturing the IHSA Class 3A State Championship in Peoria on June 11t, in the program’s first trip to the IHSA State Tournament. The Broncos set numerous records over the course of the season including the best season record in school history at 37-3. Before their journey through the state playoffs, the girls also captured the GCAC Championship in only their first year of participating in the prestigious league. The team smashed virtually every Montini hitting and pitching school record along the way and dented the IHSA record book as well. The 37-win season was one of the top win totals in the state of all time. The team marks of 444 hits and 332 RBI also were among the best showings in IHSA history. The Lady Broncos slugged 58 home runs, giving them the fifth highest total ever recorded by an IHSA team. The “W” flag will be flying high all winter long, until the Lady Broncos begin their quest for a repeat state championship next spring,” said head coach Mike Bukovsky.

Montini Catholic holds annual Powder Puff football game Montini Catholic High School in Lombard held its traditional Powder Puff football games on Sunday, Sept. 18. Not only were the games an annual “kick-off” for the school’s Homecoming week, they served a more important purpose of raising awareness for the DuPage Literacy Group.

The non-for profit charity is a community based organization serving over 30 communities in the DuPage area by training volunteer tutors to help their neighbors increase their English skills in order to achieve their goals to obtain employment, navigate the healthcare system, advocate for their families or help their children in school.

Fans were asked to either pay a ticket fee with all money earned donated to the group, or to donate a book.

“Each year at Homecoming our students are challenged to pick a charity they would like to help,” said moderator Laura Medina. “We were very honored to be representing the DuPage Literacy Group this year.”

In the end, the sophomores defeated the freshmen (20 to 6) in a grueling battle and it was the Senior Daniela Riccio takes the ball through a sea of determined juniors. seniors over the juniors, 26 to 6.

Addison Trail boys soccer team on a roll Blazers take PepsiCo Showdown Gatorade bracket title

The wins continue to pile up for the Addison Trail boys soccer team.

Through late last week the Blazers were 13-1 overall and 3-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

In recent action, the Blazers recorded a 5-1 win over District 88 neighbor Willowbrook.

Addison Trail also scored a 5-1 victory over Crystal Lake South to win the PepsiCo Showdown 16team Gatorade bracket title.

The team also downed Glenbard West (2-0) and Proviso East (8-0) in other recent games.

Through late last week the Blazers were on an eight-game winning streak.

Enrique Luna was leading the team in scoring with 20 goals and six assists. Jonathan Hernandez had

seven goals and eight assists, while Tom Cania had seven goals and five assists.

“The team is coming together as a group,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “We have improved our midfield where we have many weapons who start and come off the bench. Our team defense has been phenomenal.”

Addison Trail has scored 54 goals in 14 games and has surrendered only 12 goals.

“We have a lot of different players scoring goals for us, which is huge,” said Dini. “Our last two games we had seven different guys score for us. When you are getting contributions from all your starters and subs, things definitely are going great. I like how we have been challenging teams in the air and transitioning from defense to offense.”

Fenton football team back to .500 after win over St. Edward Willowbrook football team moves closer to being playoff eligible

After an 0-2 start, the Fenton football team has turned things around.

The Bison recorded a 52-50 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division victory over Elgin St. Edward in Week 6 action in Bensenville.

The win moved Fenton to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in MSC Blue play.

Fenton has won three of its last four games and has scored 40 or more points in two of its last three contests.

Fenton hits the road in weeks 7 and 8. This Friday, the Bison head to Riverside to face Riverside-Brookfield in a MSC Blue game. R-B is 4-2. Fenton then plays at Wheaton Academy (4-2) in Week 8.

Willowbrook football The Willowbrook football team moved one step closer to a playoff berth after a 49-20 win over Morton in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action.

The win put Willowbrook at 4-2 overall and 2-1 in WSC Gold play.

The Warriors need five wins to become playoff eligible.

Willowbrook returns to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Maywood against Proviso East. The Warriors also are on the road in Week 8 against Downers Grove South, Addison Trail football The Addison Trail football team dropped a 21-0 West Suburban Conference Gold Division game at home to Hinsdale South.

“Our defense has been solid,” said Dini. “We have seven defenders contributing in our games. We play with four defenders so it is nice to have multiple options in the back. Our guys take pride in shutouts and we have eight of them this season.”

Helping on the defensive front has been the goalkeeping tandem of juniors Jacob Grygo and Jean Avila.

“Both goalies have been stellar in the net,” said Dini. “We rotate them all the time. Jacob and Jean have flourished in competing against each other in practice and are continuing to make each other better.”

While the team was sitting at 13-1

record-wise, Dini stressed there still are improvements that can be made.

“We need to get better at our set plays,” he said. “We were executing them early in the season and were making teams pay. The last couple weeks we have been a bit unorganized and have not had guys in the right spots. We have worked a lot on this over the past week so we hope to see some good results over the rest of the season. We practice these a lot and need to take advantage of them in conference play and in the playoffs.”

Dini also lauded the play of junior midfielder Martin Juarez. “Martin has three goals in his last two games,” Dini said late last week.

“He also has three assists over the past two games. He has gone from a JV player to start the year to a varsity starter at this point. Martin has stepped up with his shooting ability and first touch.”

Addison Trail faced Leyden earlier this week in a WSC Gold game and hosts Proviso East Saturday at noon for senior day.

“We are having a great year,” said Dini. “I know we can get even better over the next couple weeks. If our guys come to play every day like we have we will be a scary team once the playoffs start.”

Addison Trail earned the No. 3 sectional seed for postseason play in a 19-team bracket.

The Willowbrook girls tennis team closed out West Suburban Conference Gold Division play with a 7-0 victory over Proviso East.

The win pushed Willowbrook to 6-5 overall and 2-4 in WSC Gold action.

Grace Wachholz was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles. Priscilla DelValle was a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-4 winner at No. 2 singles. Bianca Galicia was a default winner at No. 3 singles. Wachholz is a sophomore,

while DelValle is a freshman.

Renee Parzgnat and Millie Zachariah were 6-1, 6-1 winners at No. 1 doubles. Cate Strock and Andrea Zulawski were 6-0, 6-2 winners at No. 2 doubles. Leah Gillono and Hailey Vogt won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles, while Kellie Lanigan and Emily Schmitt won by default at No. 4 doubles. Zulawski is a sophomore.

“This year we’ve made huge improvements on consistency and ball placement,” Willowbrook coach Christy Jurik said. “I have been very impressed with our ability to read

the opponents and play smart.”

In other recent play, the Warriors recorded a 5-2 WSC Gold victory against Morton. “We always have close matches with Morton,” said Jurik.

Willowbrook now has its sights set on this weekend’s WSC Gold Division tournament. “We are hoping to move up in the standings from last year,” said Jurik. “If the girls continue to play the way they have been playing, we will move up in the final standings. We are looking forward to the conference tournament.”

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming team recently placed fifth at the York Invitational.

AT-Willowbrook placed 12th in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:25.81. That team included Aleksandra Daszkiewicz, Savannah Catalano, Madison Walsh and Brianna Richardson.

Elissa Haak won the 200 with a time of 1:56.49. Michelle Ramirez was 15th in the 200 IM at 2:37.38.

Klea Gjonaj was 15th in the 50 with a time of 28.22. Grace Roucka took 17th in the butterfly with a time of 1:14.71.

Haake also won the 100 with a time of 53.54. Kaitlyn Fox was 19th in the 500 with a time of 6:30.02.

AT-Willowbrook was fifth in the 200 relay with a time of 1:46.40.

That team included Anna Christiansen, Ramirez, Annalise Morrone and Haake.

Christiansen was fifth in the backstroke at 1:05.58. Morrone was seventh in the breaststroke with a time of 1:13.31. AT-Willowbrook took seventh in the 400 relay at 4:05.68. That team included Catalano, Gjonaj, Ramirez and Haake.

AT-Willowbrook finished with 89 points. St. Ignatius won the meet with 451 points.

Quarterback Luke Ricobene threw for more than 300 yards and five touchdowns in the victory.

He also ran in a touchdown against a team the Knights had beaten by only a touchdown a year ago. IC Catholic Prep now turns its attention to another Metro Suburban Blue foe in Wheaton Academy. The Warriors started the season 4-0 but lost to R-B by a 32-0 count in Week 5 and dropped a 28-14 game to Glenbard South (still to come on IC Catholic Prep’s schedule) in Week 6. Wheaton Academy’s four wins came against teams with a combined 3-17 record heading into Week 6.
