Park Art Center launches Crowd Funding Campaign Generosity by Indiegogo kicked off Sept. 22

The Park Art Center (PAC) at 9 East Park Boulevard officially kicked off their Generosity by Indigogo Crowd Funding Campaign Friday, Sept. 22 to enable them to continue to provide art to the greater DuPage County community, serving all ages and cultures.

PAC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit art center and art gallery developed from the cumulative vision of several local artists and community members who share a passion for art and the creative process. Their dream to create a nonprofit community center is fulfilled and flourishing as Park Art Center in Villa Park. PAC brings people together to collaborate, learn, create and innovate; a place where anyone from the artistically curious to the established artist could enjoy, create, study, exhibit, discuss, or engage with art. PAC offers FREE admission for gallery exhibits, speakers or film showings, and as such, must rely on individual donations, corporate sponsorships, grants and this new endeavor, a crowd-funding campaign.

PAC has hosted many events, all free and open to the public, including speakers and films, local artists from Studios630 and photographers Vivian Maier, Paul Elledge, and Marc Hauser.

The current exhibit opening took place on Friday, Sept. 22, Local Boys Done Good: the works of Tony Fitzpatrick & Kirk Kerndl, is a collaborative showing of Tony Fitzpatrick’s etchings and Kirk Kerndl’s landscape paintings, two artists with connections to Lombard.

A committed team of volunteers and community members renovated and refurbished the current storefront location that serves as an elegant gallery space and classroom for a variety of activities: oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting; sculpture, mixed media, ceramics, jewelry making and sewing.

PAC is now embarking on its third year, starting Sunday, Oct. 1, with a fundraising goal of $170,000, in order to: • Solidify our current location; we are required to sign an annual lease and have cash reserves in place to cover rent and utilities for the upcoming year.

• Secure contracts with artists with enough lead time to plan and market their respective exhibits, related programs, and schedule art.

• Cover operating expenses that keep PAC up and running on a dayto-day basis including insurance, professional fees, art supplies, marketing costs, office expenses, and costs required to maintain a website and on-line presence.

For the past two years, PAC has done a lot on a shoestring. The center relies on the volunteer efforts of a small, dedicated team to plan, coordinate, and execute their programs.

Volunteer time this year is expected to exceed 3,500 hours. PAC would like to begin paying salaries for a few key positions in order to maintain current responsibilities and the continuity of Park Art Center.

Addison Sept. 25 A 27-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of S. Lincoln at around 5:25 p.m. Police said the suspect punched and choked a victim.

Sept. 24 Ryan O. Kindle, 33, of Arlington Heights, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 9:58 p.m.

Police said Kindle under-rang merchandise for sale by the store.

Sept. 22 • Police said officers responded to a call to assist the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office to transport Jennifer N. Lampley, 25, of Rockford, from an address in Oak Brook to the Addison Police Department to be processed on an original warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for communicating with a witness, and harassment of a witness at around 12:08 p.m.

• Police said Jocelyn Ortiz, 35, of Bolingbrook, was stopped for using an electronic device while operating a vehicle, and was found to have a failure to appear warrant out of the Will County Sheriff’s Department

for failure to appear DUI at around 8:40 p.m. Ortiz also was charged with illegal use of an electronic device while operating a vehicle.

Aug. 27 Police said Nicholas J. Orlando, 26, of Newark, had a failure to appear warrant out of the Kane County Sheriff’s Department for driving while license suspended.

Villa Park Sept. 22-Sept. 23 Theft was reported in the 300 block of E. Kenilworth. Police said that between 9 p.m. Sept. 22 and 1 a.m. Sept. 23, an unknown suspect stole a Samsung Galaxy S8Plus from the bar table where the complainant was sitting.

Sept. 22 • Jeremy J. Wilson, 35, of Villa Park, was charged with six counts of theft in the 600 block of W. North Ave. between 10:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sept. 4. The original complainant and arrest warrant were issued on Sept. 22.

• Armed robbery was reported at a convenience store at around 3:09 a.m. Police said an unknown suspect entered the store, pointed an unknown object at the clerk and ordered the clerk to give him the cash from the register. The suspect also reportedly stole two packs of cigarettes.

Sept. 21 • Burglary was reported in the 100 block of W. Roosevelt. Police said that an unknown suspect entered a

vehicle parked in a lot between 5:25 and 10:30 p.m. and stole several miscellaneous items from the center console.

• Criminal damage was reported in the 200 block of E. North at around 7:02 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect scratched the hood and the passenger side door of a vehicle parked in the lot.

• Two male juveniles from Villa Park were charged with retail theft at a store at around 6:27 p.m.

Sept. 19 Disorderly conduct was reported at a convenience store at around 5:13 p.m. Police said an unknown male suspect was upset and argued with the store clerk. Prior to leaving the

property, the suspect allegedly threw a drink at the clerk and knocked over the cash register.

Sept. 18 • Dalvine R. Crosby, 23, of Villa Park, was charged with fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer near Princeton and Vermont between 11:35 and 11:41 a.m.

On Oct. 30, 2012, at approximately 11 p.m., Naperville police officers were dispatched in response to a report of a woman who had just been robbed.

Upon their arrival, officers found Plackowska at the residence covered in blood. At approximately this same time, Naperville police officers responded to a call from Marta Dworakowski requesting help in locating her daughter Olivia, whom Plackowska was babysitting.

Upon arriving at the Dworakowski residence, officers gained entrance and discovered the deceased bodies of Justin Plackowska and Olivia Dworakowski and the two family dogs.

An investigation into the murders revealed that at some point in time that evening, Plackowska told the children to get ready for bed. Instead of getting ready for bed however, the children began jumping on the bed in the master bedroom.

After arming herself with a kitchen knife, Plackowska went to the master bedroom and began stabbing her son repeatedly about his entire body. She then stabbed Olivia repeatedly throughout her body as well and killed the two family dogs.

Plackowska then drove to a family friend’s home. On Nov. 1, 2012, Plackowska appeared in Bond Court where she was ordered to be held without bond.

She has remained in the DuPage County Jail since that time. “This afternoon, following two and a half weeks of evidence and testimony, Judge Miller correctly found that Elzbieta Plackowska fully understood her criminal conduct at the time she brutally murdered Justin and Olivia,” Berlin said.

“They were two beautiful children with their whole lives ahead of them and I continue to offer my sincerest condolences to their surviving family members.”

Plackowska’s next court appearance is scheduled for November 21, 2017, for return of the pre-sentence report.

Legendary Bears coach to present Roland Quest Lecture

For the seventh year in a row, DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin presented a budget that does not increase the County’s portion of the property tax levy.

“The state finally has a budget, but on the way to crafting it, the legislature kept $2.7 million in funding that is generally given to counties,” he said. “That has had a significant impact on our ability to balance our budget.”

Cronin’s proposed budget keeps the County’s property tax levy frozen at $66.9 million for the seventh year in a row under his administration. The proposed budget has a full-time headcount of 2,206, which is down from 2,270 in FY2011. The proposed FY2018 spending plan is $439.6 million, with expenditures out of the General Revenue Fund at $176.9 million, down slightly from the previous year.

“This is where the $2.7 million kept by the state hits the hardest,” he said “The General Revenue Fund is where we get the money to fund our most vital services including public safety, our subsidy for the DuPage Care Center and other critical components of our County government.

“For the last seven years, we’ve worked diligently to reduce expenses and decrease the budget to meet our service obligations without asking the taxpayers for a penny more. But it has been excruciatingly difficult, and there is a limit to how much we can cut without threatening our ability to fulfill our mission. We may be reaching a point where we simply can’t cut anymore.”

Reforms made through the DuPage ACT Initiative have led to more than $100 million in savings and the County boasts a 3.9 percent unemployment rate and AAA bond rating.

Cronin proposes 7th County budget with no property tax increase

We’ve known each other for more than 30 years and I’m still learning new things about him. This weekend it was all about scented candles.

Most of us enjoy the aroma of a nice scented candle. I do. I guess I didn’t realize he did. I never really thought about it. As chief procurement officer of my domicile, I typically choose the scent to which we subject our sniffers.

In an attempt to bring nature inside, I gravitate toward fresh, outdoorsy fragrances. Pine and eucalyptus are two of my favorites.

I prefer my kitchen to smell like a forest. I also take into consideration

one that bakes homemade cookies, pecan pie or maybe apple cobbler – of the wax variety. There isn’t a candle that smells like beef stew or split pea soup – at least not that I know of. But someone is probably inventing such a product right now.

Lots of people enjoy floral fragrances. It’s like having a flaming bouquet of roses or lilacs or gardenias right on your counter – except without any real flowers.

Then there are the dreamers. They prefer candles that create a mood and are labeled with names such as Paris café, crisp morning air or mahogany driftwood.

I have a friend who likes to go on tropical holidays courtesy of her candles. She picks flavors like tiki colada or coconut Malibu dream.

The scents transport her to a pristine beach on an island in the sun – all without paying any airfare. She is a smart friend.

There are candles for those who want to imbibe without the imbibement. Chocolate martini, cherry merlot and champagne fizz are a few of my favorites. You can even get a candle infused with the aroma of beer, although I’m not sure why. To each their own.

There are practically infinite

choices for candle scents. And, although I can tell you the favorites of most of my friends, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit I’d never explored preference from my husband’s perspective.

Until last weekend.

During an innocent errand to the store we ventured by the candle aisle. I suggested getting one.

“Which kind?” he asked.

In a moment of marital selflessness I said, “You pick.”

I figured he’d go with something like, forest floor, or juniper or maybe

even the one called simply “wood,” because that’s the kind I would have chosen and the kind we’ve always burned in our kitchen.

He bypassed all of the above and surprised me.

“Peach,” he said, putting the peach-colored candle into the cart.

“Peach?” I asked.

“Yeah,” he said. “I like the smell of peaches.”

I couldn’t argue with his obvious and indisputable logic.

I didn’t even mention (out loud) that the peach candle was a complete mismatch for our kitchen décor. That made for two acts of marital altruism in one day – nearly a record for me.

We took the candle home and lit the wick. The room filled with a warm fruity scent. Fresh. Simple. Sweet. Peachy.

Maybe peach wasn’t my first choice, but it wasn’t all bad.

I kind of liked it. The same way I like learning new things about the guy who goes on errands with me to the store.

Besides, it could have been worse. He could have picked one that smelled like beer.

Nybo, Breen, partner for drive to benefit overseas troops Beginning Oct. 3, State Senator Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) and State Representative Peter Breen (R-Lombard) will once again partner with the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the local Lilac Post 5815 for their third annual “Support Our Troops” collection drive.

Items collected throughout the months of October and November will be delivered to military personnel serving overseas near or before Christmas.

“Supporting our troops is as easy as buying some of the suggested items the next time you’re in the store, and bringing them to our legislative offices. Your thoughtfulness will mean so much to the men and women who are a long way from home, especially during the holiday season,” Nybo said. “Rep. Breen and I want the brave young men and women who serve in our military—now and in years past—to know how much we appreciate their leadership and their commitment to

freedom.”

The Nybo/Breen shared legislative office at 929 S. Main Street, Suite 105A in Lombard will serve as the drop-off location for items to be donated to U.S. troops. Donations will be accepted from Oct. 3 through Nov. 30 during normal business hours of 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

As they have done in the past, Nybo and Breen would also like to send care packages specifically to local soldiers from the area (IL Senate District 24 or IL House District 48). Friends and family with loved ones from the area who are currently serving in the military are encouraged to contact the Nybo/Breen office with their names and addresses.

Recommended items to be included in the care packages include: • Books, magazines, crossword and word search puzzles, coloring books, colored pencils, dominoes, checkers or chess games;

Comcast announced on Thursday, Sept. 28 that Elmhurst College, the Illinois Institute of Technology, Lewis University and Loyola University are the latest Chicago-area schools to offer its Xfinity On Campus service to students. Xfinity on Campus lets students watch live TV, On Demand and recorded content on their IP-enabled devices, including laptops, tablets, smartphones and, new this year, Roku players.

The service is included with room and board for students living in on-campus housing.

“Xfinity On Campus is a true game-changer for students,” said John Crowley, Comcast’s Greater Chicago Region senior vice president. “We know that this young generation of viewers consumes content while on the go, at their convenience, and across multiple devices. The Montini Booster Club, under the direction of Dan Laughlin ‘86, recently launched a school-wide search for students wanting to showcase their talents and school spirit as Montini’s Bronco Mascot for the fall, winter and spring sports seasons.

The Boosters sponsored a scholarship with funds payable towards tuition in order to “rein in” new talent.

The position became vacant after the graduation of fouryear Bronco veteran, Matthew Ernat ‘16 of Lombard.

“The support from our students was quite enthusiastic,” said Mr. Laughlin. “We decided we needed to hold a tryout!”

In the end, two students stood out above the rest and will split Bronco mascot duties this school year.

While we asked the Bronco Mascots if they would like to reveal their identities, they wish to keep it a mystery. “We can assure all Bronco fans that the Bronco is alive and well and will be seen at Montini school and sporting events this school year,” Laughlin said.

Willowbrook names September recipient of ‘88’s Best’ Shannon Frank has been named as Willowbrook’s September recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her outstanding academic accomplishments. Frank, a senior, was recognized during the Sept. 25 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

As a student, Frank consistently pursues the most rigorous courses available at Willowbrook. At the conclusion of her high school career, she will have completed 10 Advanced Placement (AP)/ college-level courses, as well as a multitude of Honors courses. Frank also has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Honors and a member of the Distinction Honor Roll each semester of her high school career.

She was honored with an Outstanding Freshman Award and serves as Secretary of the National Honor Society and President of Willowbrook’s Social Studies Honor Society, Civitas. She is an inductee of the National English Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society as well.

Beyond the classroom, Frank is an active member and leader within Willowbrook’s extracurricular programs. She is part of Blue Crew and Varsity Athletic Club to promote school spirit and pride and has served as a New Beginnings men-

“Frank has been an excellent member of Orchestra, performing in concerts and school events, and she has exemplified what it means to be a true Warrior musician,” said Jan Bobek, Orchestra Director.

“Always preparing her music to perfection, Frank brings the level of any music group she is a part of to new heights. As a soloist and an ensemble member, Frank has contributed a great deal to the Willowbrook Music Department.”

She further exemplifies her character through her service to others.

She has participated in and led her team at Relay For Life each year of high school, supported youth reading programs at Helen Plum Library in Lombard and volunteers at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units.

“Frank is a fantastic mathematician, whose dedication to her own excellence is apparent every single day,” said Liz Zwart, math teacher.

“She exudes a thirst for knowledge constantly. Frank pushes herself to excel and asks deep questions to confirm her own understanding.

On a more personal note, Frank is a genuine, kind and mature young woman, whose ability to work with absolutely anyone will make her a success in life.”

Brett Blair, English Department Chair, agreed.

“Frank is an amazing example of an 88’s Best student,” Blair said.

“She is hardworking, dedicated, creative and truly talented. I am always proud to call upon her when she has something to offer regarding analysis and discussion of a text under study. I look forward to continuing to work with Frank throughout this academic year.”

Science teacher Eastman Tiu said Frank’s ability to serve as a mentor for her peers is what makes her stand out.

“Frank was a consistent leader in AP Physics, often taking that role in her lab group, while listening to and learning from collaboration with her peers,” Tiu said. “She showed excellent mental toughness as the course progressively became more challenging.”

Excited to continue her education and drive for success in college, Frank plans to apply to Miami University in Ohio, Saint Louis University and University of Wisconsin-Madison to pursue a degree in physical therapy.

Conroy to hold property tax seminar in Villa Park

To help residents better understand their property tax bills, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, is partnering with York Township Assessor Deanna Wilkins to host a property tax seminar on Wednesday, Oct. 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Villa Park Village Hall, located at 20 S. Ardmore in Villa Park.

“Skyrocketing property taxes have taken a toll on Illinois residents,” Conroy said. “This property tax seminar is an excellent opportunity to learn about the appeal process and what each line of a property bill represents. It is also a great opportunity to ask questions about where property tax dollar are being spent.”

Conroy’s property tax seminar, which is free and open to the public, will feature a presentation from York Township Assessor Deanna Wilkins. Residents will learn how to read their property tax bills and learn about the property tax appeals and exemption process.

“Every homeowner can appeal their property taxes and many may be eligible for property tax exemptions, freezes and other forms of relief and not even know about it,” said Conroy.

“I am grateful for our local assessor partnering with me for this event. It is important that as elected officials we ensure that taxpayers are aware of the tools available to save money.”

Birthdays make us a bit more reflective, another trip around the sun and all that. Maybe we would be better off if we thought of every day as a birthday. I recently shared in my blog a quote that states, “Don’t be fooled by the calendar.

There are only as many days in the year as you make use of.” Thank you, Charles Richards, for that little nugget of insight.

We all have the choice to greet each day as an opportunity. Many times we forget we have that choice and switch to autopilot doing the same-old, same-old. Once in a while a life event will trigger us to seize the day, but do we carpe diem every day?

I agree with Annie Dillard who says, “Spend the afternoon. You can’t take it with you.”

in every day. That is what we learn as we grow older. Birthdays are a wonderful reminder but to go 365 days until I am reminded again is not a good plan. So I create reminders every day. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”

To paraphrase Emily Dickinson: That it will never come again is what makes this day so sweet.

Villa Park sets Trick or Treating hours Keeping Halloween fun, safe

Ghosts, goblins, witches, princesses and all manner of costumed kids will be going door-to-door in less than a month seeking Halloween candy. This year, Oct. 31 is on Tuesday. The Village Board of Trustees traditionally sets Trick-or-Treat hours to help maintain a fun and safe environment for kids.

This year, the official time to ‘hit the candy trail’ for Trick-or-Treating in Villa Park is 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“By adopting this resolution, a uniform time is recommended for the event, thereby allowing the police department to increase patrols for the purpose of protecting the children who are participating in the Halloween festivities,” read a staff memo.

The Board passed the Resolution at its Monday, Sept. 25 meeting.

Several Halloween themed events are planned for the weeks leading up to Halloween. These include the Halloween Happenings at the Iowa Community Center on Friday, Oct. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Villa Park Junior Women’s Club is also hosting a ‘Trick or Trot’ 5k run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Symphony opens 57th season Oct. 14

IC Catholic Prep football team racks up 655 total yards in win Freshman Franklin runs for 233 yards; Eatman catches two touchdown passes

The IC Catholic Prep football team continues to pile up yards like they are going out of style.

The Knights ran up a bill to the tune of 655 total yards of offense in its 45-0 shutout of Riverside-Brookfield in a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game contested in Riv-

erside.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in MSC Blue play.

The victory made the defending Class 3A state champions playoff eligible.

A win next week in West Chicago against Wheaton Academy assures the Knights of a playoff bid.

In the triumph against Riverside-Brookfield, quarterback CJ West completed 6 of 11 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns against no interceptions.

On the ground, freshman Kyle Franklin ran the ball 22 times for 230 yards and scored a touchdown. He averaged 10.5 yards per carry and had

a long run of 68 yards.

Senior Lazerick Eatman ran 13 times for 112 yards (8.6 yards per carry) and scored a touchdown. His long run was 34 yards. West ran seven times for 65 yards and scored a touchdown.

As a team, IC Catholic Prep ran the ball 45 times for 422 yards and averaged 9.6 yards per carry, nearly a first down every time a rusher touched the ball.

Khali Saunders caught two passes for 59 yards, while Eatman caught two touchdown passes from West totaling 71 yards. Jacob Lytton caught one pass for 32 yards, while Sean

Hipskind had a 71-yard touchdown catch from West.

On offense, IC Catholic Prep rolled up 655 total yards.

Sophomore Kevin Cooke led the defense with 11 tackles. Kemon Reese and Dylan Packer each had six tackles. Reese had one quarterback sack. Hipskind had an interception and a fumble recovery, while Khali Saunders had a caused fumble and Khalil Saunders had a pass deflection.

Eatman also scored a two-point conversion.

Over the last three weeks, IC Catholic Prep has put up point totals of 54, 67 and 56.

IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team showing improvements

While recent results would not indicate it on paper, the IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team is moving in the right direction.

In recent play, the Knights lost 3-1 to Elmwood Park, 6-1 to De La Salle, 5-1 to Aurora Central Catholic, 3-0 to Niles Notre Dame, 5-2 to Nazareth Academy, 3-1 to Chicago Christian, 5-0 to Ridgewood and 7-0 to Elgin St. Edward. The Knights defeated Aurora Christian 3-2, defeated Walther Christian 7-1 and lost to Timothy Christian 6-1 after being down only 2-0 at halftime.

The Knights were 3-11 overall through late last week.

Coach Javier Andrade zeroed in on the game against Niles Notre Dame in particular. “We played well defensively against Notre Dame,” he said.

“They had been destroying everybody 8-0 and 9-0 and it was only 3-0 against us.”

He also was impressed with his squad’s play against Timothy Christian. “Timothy Christian was a great game for the kids,” said Andrade.

“They played well. Like I told the kids, I would rather lose fighting.”

Andrade said he’s seen his team make plenty of progress. “I have a very good feeling about the playoffs,” he said. “I’ve seen big-time improvement this year. Timothy Christian is a great team. Last year in the first half

it was 8-0. This year it was 2-0. We are playing as a team. Our passing is better and our defending is much better. We play as a team and not as individuals. There is no ‘I’ in team. It’s not one person winning out there, it’s the whole team that wins a game. And that goes not just for sports, it goes for work and in life. There is no ‘I’ in anything.”

Andrade said he’s not concerned about a 3-11 record. “In games against ACC, De La Salle and Evergreen Park it was 1-1 in the first half.

We played excellent,” he said. “In the second half, we got deflated. A friend of mine who is from Argentina and lives in Miami and is a soccer player, came to visit and went to a couple

of our games. He said, ‘Javier, in the first half I saw a team that was not a three-year-old program. You looked like a 20-year-old program playing great soccer. And then in the second half you looked like a one-week-old program.’”

Alex Meurer had four goals in the Walther Christian win. “Alex is playing well and scoring a lot of goals for us,” said Andrade.

The team also has received boosts from the likes of goalie Zen Tverdokhlib, Tommy Sloan, William Russ, Alex Cabrera and Jack Fowler.

“Our goalie Zen T. is excellent,” said Andrade. “In the midfield Tommy connects a lot with William and on defense it’s Alex Cabrera with Jack.”

Willowbrook football Addison Trail girls volleyball team becomes playoff team making progress eligible with win Blazers sport 2-1 conference mark I’m most impressed by Addison Trail loses to Leyden

The Willowbrook football team became playoff eligible after scoring a 45-22 West Suburban Conference crossover victory against York in Villa Park in Week 6 action.

The win put the Warriors at 5-1 overall.

Willowbrook can clinch a playoff berth with a victory at Morton Friday night.

In the York game, Willowbrook led 14-0 at one point and held a 14-7 lead after the first quarter and a 24-7 edge at halftime. The Warriors led 38-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

Jack Jessen and Chris Diaz each scored two touchdowns for the winners.

York dropped to 0-6 with the loss.

Addison Trail football The Addison Trail football team fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play after a 14-7 loss at home to Leyden.

Leyden led 7-0 after the first quarter and 14-0 at halftime.

Addison Trail quarterback Mike Ruffolo completed five passes for 44 yards and had one touchdown toss.

Nick Daudelin ran the ball 14 times for 57 yards and had a long run of 22 yards.

Jacob Grygo caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Ruffolo.

Daudelin caught four passes for 20 yards.

Christian Cici had a fumble recovery on defense and also returned one kickoff 34 yards.

Addison Trail returns to action Friday when it heads to Darien to face Hinsdale South in another WSC Gold game.

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team sported an 8-10 overall record through its first 18 matches.

The Blazers also were 2-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play through their first three conference contests.

And through those first 18 games, coach Dan Styler has seen some positives, particularly when it comes to the defensive side of the net.

“Our defensive effort and execution has been a bright spot for our team,” said Styler. “Our success always will be built on our ability to control the ball in serve-receive.

There is a clear correlation between the success from match to match aligned to our ability to pass the ball effectively. We are comfortable with our core group of primary passers and look forward to them working as a unit to continue to grow together during the second half of the season.”

Addison Trail has been led offensively by Nina Muell, who topped the team in kills with 168 through those first 18 contests. At the service line, Dionosia Vassos was tops with 19 service aces. In the back row, Sofia Susa had a team-best 96 digs.

Setter Amy Reyes has been directing the offense and had 107 assists through those first 18 contests.

Styler added the team still is hard at work regarding the offensive side of the equation. “We still are working on establishing a balanced offensive effort during the second half of the season,” he said earlier last

How low did the Willowbrook boys golf team go?

The Warriors recently shot a 327 to finish third at the recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet held at par-72 Prairie Bluff Golf Club.

Willowbrook was seven shots off the pace of tournament co-champions and overall conference co-champions Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South. Both those teams shot 320s.

It was Willowbrook’s lowest team score of the year for 18 holes and coach Gary Walker noted it was the squad’s best score in at least the past eight years.

Willowbrook ended up taking

fourth in the conference overall. The Warriors did defeat Addison Trail at the conference meet (327-337), but ended up fourth with the regular-season dual meets figured in.

Junior Taylor Sarovich shot a personal-best 76 round and took third overall. Senior Buddy Martens shot 82 and took 10th overall. Both Sarovich and Martens earned all-conference honors.

Junior Jackson Hathaway shot 84 and Tim Keefe, a senior, rounded out the Warriors’ scorecard with an 85. Also competing for Willowbrook were junior Joey Guthrie (86) and sophomore Logan Rattana (88).

Willowbrook was scheduled to play in a Class 3A regional earlier this week.

Willowbrook boys cross country Willowbrook boys cross-country coach T.J. Artman reports his squad is hard at work and competing against a strong list of runners at its meets. “The varsity is working hard,

but it’s tough to beat some of the faster times right now,” he said.

The team’s lower levels are having success, punctuated by a second-place showing at the recent Leyden Invitational.

“Our lower levels are doing great,” he said. “They are showing promise for future seasons.”

Progress has been made, Artman noted, on a number of fronts. “We’re coming together as a team and our pack running has improved,” he said.

“We’re seeing consistent times and we’re getting faster overall.”

Matt Caron continues to improve as the postseason approaches. “Matt continues to get faster and is motivated for the post part of the season,” said Artman.

Artman would like to see his team finish in the top half of the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet on Oct. 14. Willowbrook hosts the conference meet this year.

“The team has bonded well together and it enjoys working hard every day,” he said.

The Fenton boys soccer team played right with Riverside-Brookfield and York in a pair of recent games but came away with nothing to show for it in the win column.

Fenton lost a 2-1 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game to Riverside-Brookfield in a shootout situation. In the shootout, Fenton made its first shot, but missed its next three.

“We didn’t capitalize on some opportunities,” said Fenton coach Victor Ruiz.

Angel Barriga had Fenton’s lone goal in regulation against R-B. He also had the lone shootout make.

Fenton also lost 4-3 to York. Barriga and Ivan Jaramillo each had a goal. Sophomore Conrad Macieg had a goal off a Barriga assist.

“Again, we had some missed opportunities,” said Ruiz.

In earlier action, Fenton was a 4-0 non-conference winner over Downers Grove South.

Branny Salas had two goals, while Barriga and Jaramillo each had a goal.

Overall, Ruiz has been pleased with the team’s progress, but errors at key times, he noted, have come back to hurt his squad.

“We are moving the ball well,” he said.

“The problem is we keep making mistakes and the other team seems to capitalize on our mistakes. I tell the guys we keep beating ourselves as opposed to the other team beating us. We have to clean it up. Once the playoffs come, if we do this we will get knocked out early and we don’t want that.

We’re hosting regionals and sectionals this year.”

Fenton was 12-5 overall after the non-conference loss to York.

“A 12-5 record is OK, but we are not where we should be,” said Ruiz. “Out of those five games, there’s only one we should have lost and that was to Wheaton Academy.”

Ruiz said Salas continues to make improvements to his game along with Johnny Chavez.

“Brammy has been stepping up and scoring some goals,” he said. “Johnny plays defensive mid and wins balls and wins tackles. He does a good job setting up his teammates.”

Through late last week, Barriga was leading the team with 26 goals. Jaramillo had 17 goals.

Fenton played earlier in the week at Glenbard South in a MSC Blue game. The Bison are home today at 4:30 p.m. for a key contest against Elgin St. Edward. The Green Wave were 20-0 through late last week.

“It will be a huge challenge for us,” said Ruiz of the St. Edward game. “Everything in the season for us is a challenge. We set team and individual goals. This game against St. Edward is a great opportunity for us. We know we will have to play well and have one of the best games of the season. If we do that, we have a chance to beat a very good team.”

The loss put Fenton at 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Fenton returns to action Friday at home against Riverside-Brookfield.
