Cronin proposes 8th budget with no property tax increase For the eighth consecutive year, DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin presented a balanced budget that does not increase the County’s portion of the property tax levy.

“This has been the toughest budget I’ve had to present,” Cronin.

“For eight years, we’ve continu-

ally done more with less, and cut government spending while still meeting our service obligations.

Any further cuts, and we will hit bone.”

The total budget is $433.8 million, down $5.8 million from the previous fiscal year, and $43.9 million less than Fiscal Year 2011,

Chairman Cronin’s first year in office. The proposed property tax rate remains flat at $66.9 million for the 11th straight year. The total full-time headcount is 2,167, which is down from 2,270 in FY 2011.

‘In Sickness and In Health … A Love Story’ coming to Elmhurst College Giuliana and Bill Rancic to discuss breast cancer’s impact on their lives

As part of Elmhurst College’s observation of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, popular E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic, and her entrepreneur husband, Bill, discuss Giuliana’s breast cancer diagnosis seven years ago and its impact on their lives.

The Rancics will present In Sickness and in Health … A Love Story, as part of this year’s Roland Quest Lecture Series at Elmhurst College. The program will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m., in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel on the campus of

Today he is an entrepreneur, restaurateur and sought-after motivational speaker on the subjects of business and entrepreneurship.

Traveling exhibit stops at College of DuPage existence. Cases featured include Block v. City of Chicago, which concerned the first movie censorship laws, and lawyers featured include Ferdinand Barnett, one of the first African American attorneys licensed in Illinois.

The exhibit also highlights the important role that the judicial branch has in upholding the rule of law, providing a forum for dispute

resolution, and interpreting the law.

“Over the past two centuries, the judicial branch of the state of Illinois has evolved into one of the largest unified court systems in the United States. Although our work has had an important impact on the character and quality of life in Illinois, our contributions are little known beyond the legal community,” Chief Justice Lloyd A. Karmeier said.

Railroads made Chicago, stealing commerce from steamboat hubs like St. Louis; but it’s a love-hate relationship in the suburbs and Chicago today

Trains brought Abraham Lincoln’s body home to Illinois, transported southern blacks escaping Jim Crow laws to Chicago, and now carry a labor force of thousands between the suburbs and downtown Chicago daily.

Freight, passenger and commuter trains pass through the Chicago area at the rate of 1,300 a day, Illinois Department of Transportation says, and rail lines fan out in every direction.

“People in Illinois are as intimately tied to railroading as anywhere in the country,” DePaul University transportation professor Joseph Schwieterman said. “Millions live close to busy rail lines, use commuter or intercity passenger trains, or cross busy sets of tracks every day, giving them a strong psychological connection to railroads.”

But being the rail hub of the nation

also has its downside: Meager funding for commuter rail, crossing delays, and freight gridlock are among the challenges facing the state in the 21st century.

The first train to appear in the Chicago metro region was a Galena & Chicago Union Railroad steam engine dubbed the “Pioneer” in 1848, according to the Encyclopedia of Chicago.

One of its first destinations was the settlement of Elmhurst, foreshadowing a regional commuter rail service under Metra that made 78.6 million passenger trips in 2017.

“Our legacy suburbs developed along the railroads. In many respects they owe the initial growth to the railroads,” railroad historian and Metra Chairman Norm Carlson said.

Prior to railroads, “shipping was the only way to move bulk commodities,” Carlson explained. “‘Interior’ delivery was limited to what the horse or mule could carry or pull.”

Initially, Midwestern railroads were built to link the nation’s interior with waterways, like the Mississippi River, and St. Louis was pegged as the gateway to the West. Chicago gained traction “in large measure to the access to Lake Michigan,” Carlson said.

Railroads began sprouting like dandelions to feed growing demands.

“From moving crops to market to moving raw materials in and finished products out, the railroads connect the economic activity of the state,” Carlson said.

Schwieterman noted “everyone knows that railroads are a huge part of Chicago’s history, but many don’t

fully appreciate that other places, including Decatur, Galesburg, Effingham and Rock Island, were rail junctions of enormous importance, as well.”

As of 2018, the Chicago region absorbs almost 500 freight trains daily or 25 percent of traffic in the United States.

But outdated infrastructure where railway tracks intersect or cross busy roads mean trains can spend as much time in Chicago as it takes to reach either coast. Efforts to untangle the rail spaghetti—expediting trains and improving safety—will cost $4.4

billion and are about 40 percent complete.

Both Metra and Amtrak are suffering from lackluster funding amid demands for better service from riders. Yet, despite the budget drought for commuter rail, Illinois’ high-speed rail project to begin service between Chicago and Springfield with speeds of 110 mph is expected to finish this year.

“Chicago remains the workhorse of our country’s railroad industry,” Schwieterman said. “That keeps rail lines in our state unusually vibrant and busy.”

County announces first death from West Nile virus

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) has confirmed the first human death due to West Nile virus (WNV) infection. A DuPage County resident over the age of 65 who became ill in early September with WNV has died.

There have been 14 human cases reported in DuPage County in 2018.

“The report of a death is a sad reminder that it’s still important to protect yourself, protect your family against West Nile virus,” said Karen Ayala, DCHD executive director.

The health department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) remains at Level 3 (high risk) because of the number of mosquito batches testing positive for WNV. Level 3 indicates high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, and multiple human cases of WNV disease in DuPage County. View the PPI at dupagehealth.org.

The PPI provides a real-time snapshot of WNV activity, which ranges from Level 0 (zero) meaning no risk, to Level 3 announcing a high level of risk with multiple human cases of WNV. The PPI is updated every Wednesday at 3 p.m. throughout the WNV season.

While most people infected with WNV do not develop any symptoms, approximately one in five people infected with WNV will develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Less than one percent will develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis (inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissues).

People over the age of 60, and those with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and organ transplants are at greater risk for serious illness, and rarely may progress to coma and death.

Anyone who experiences symptoms that cause concern should contact their health care provider.

The health department continues to monitor WNV activity by collecting and testing mosquitoes from traps located throughout the county from May through October, the West Nile virus season.

Reminder: 4 Ds of Defense Residents are reminded to “Fight the Bite” and follow the 4 Ds of Defense: • Drain: Drain those items that collect standing water around your home, yard or business. Scrub and refill pet water dishes and bird baths regularly.

• Defend: Use an insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors and reapply according to directions.

• Dress: Wear long pants, long sleeves and closed toe shoes when outside to cover the skin.

• Dusk to Dawn: Wear repellent outdoors during these prime times for mosquito activity.

Key Club offers Villa Park’s first responders appreciation on 9/11 On Sept. 11, Willowbrook Key Club members recognized the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, by writing thank you cards to first responders with the Villa Park Fire Department and the Villa Park Police Department.

Those thank you messages were a way to remember and honor those who lost their lives 17 years ago as a result of the terrorist attacks that took place on that day and to show appreciation for those who continue to pro-

tect our freedoms.

On Sept. 25, the students delivered those notes, along with boxes of caramel apples, to the firefighters and the police officers as a token of gratitude for all the first responders do for the

Addison Sept. 25 Chad M. Looby, 40, of Homer Glen, was charged with DUI near Lake and Rohlwing at around 4:01 a.m. Police said officers observed

Looby’s vehicle parked in front of the gas pumps at a gas station; the engine was smoking, there was heavy front-end damage and the tires were flat. It was determined that Looby was driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.

Police said Jose G. Medina, 27, of Addison, was wanted on a failure to appear warrant for DUI at around 7:59 p.m.

Sept. 24 Police said a 33-year-old Addison man had a warrant out of the Chicago Police Department for domestic battery at around 8:32 p.m.

Police officers responded to a domestic trouble call in the 500 block of Macie at around 9:51 p.m. It was discovered that a 57-year-old Addison man had two outstanding failure to appear warrants—one for DUI and the other for domestic battery.

Sept. 23 Samantha Estrada, 25, of Melrose Park, was charged with DUI near Army Trail and Brookdale at around

12:58 a.m. Police said an officer responded to a call of vehicle swerving on the roadway with a blown tire, and Estrada was found to be DUI. Sept. 22 Police said that while investigating a traffic accident near Army Trail and Swift at around 10:20 p.m., Shane F. Santonocito, 23, of Glendale Heights, was found to have two failure to appear warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department. The first was for unlawful possession of cannabis and the second was for no valid driver’s license.

A 43-year-old Chicago man was charged with domestic battery at around 11:54 p.m. Police said the suspect repeatedly punched the victim on the head and chest.

Sept. 16 Andre J. Davidson, Jr., 21, of Chicago, was issued a village ordinance for battery near Lake and Rohlwing at around 12:24 a.m. Police said the suspect swiped his hand on the lower backs of two female victims as they sat on a motorcycle video game at Dave and Busters.

Villa Park Sept. 22 Gerardo Alcala-Gutierrez, 25, of Chicago, was charged with burglary at Burlington at around 2:45 p.m.

Elizabeth N. Pledge, 27, of Melrose Park, was charged with DUI, speeding and improper use of an electronic communication device near Route 83 and Roosevelt at around 2:04 a.m.

Theft was reported at a restaurant.

Police said that an unknown suspect

stole a cell phone that was inadvertently left unattended on a video game sometime between 2:40 and 3:17 p.m.

Retail theft was reported at a store at around 3:56 a.m. Police said that an unknown suspect removed several items from the display shelves and left with the items without paying for them.

Sept. 21 Gustavo Dominguez Jr., 18, of Northlake, was charged with possession of an air driven gun near North Avenue and Route 83 at around 11:43 p.m.

Sept. 19-Sept. 21 Theft was reported at Willowbrook High School. Police said that an unknown suspect stole $40 in cash from a backpack that was left unsecured and unattended in the locker room sometime between 6:55 a.m.

Sept. 18 Daniel J. Muisenga, 27, of Elmhurst, was charged with criminal trespass to a residence in the 200 block of S. Michigan on Aug. 3. The original complaint and arrest warrant were issued Sept. 18.

Sept. 17-Sept. 18 Theft was reported at a store. Police said that an unknown suspect stole approximately 30 wooden pallets from the property sometime between 7 p.m. Sept. 17 and 9:19 a.m.

Sept. 17 Torres T. Johnson, 27, of Maywood, was charged with obstructing justice in the 200 block of N. Princeton at around 9:36 p.m.

Travis Lanthorn, 24, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of cannabis near Blackstone and Villa at around 3:30 p.m.

Theft was reported at a store. Police said that an unknown suspect stole a wallet that was inadvertently left behind at the cashier counter sometime between 1:30 and 2 p.m.

Sept. 16 Katherine E. Evans, 28, of Elmhurst, was charged with two counts of DUI and improper lane usage near North Avenue and Route 83 at

around 1:41 a.m.

Retail theft was reported at a store.

Police said that an unknown suspect removed clothing items from the display and left the store without paying sometime between 2:21 and 4:54 p.m.

Sept. 15-Sept. 16 Theft was reported in the 100 block of E. Elm. Police said that unknown suspects removed two political campaign signs from the yard sometime between 6:30 a.m. Sept. 15 and 7:59 a.m. Sept. 16.

Election Commission announces early voting, grace period registration The DuPage County Election Commission is informing the voting public that early voting for the Nov. 6 General Election began on Thursday, Sept. 27 at the DuPage County Election Commission office, located on the first floor of the Administration Building in the DuPage County Government Campus at 421 North County Farm Road in Wheaton.

Voters will be able to vote at other early voting polling places conveniently located throughout the County beginning Monday, Oct. 22 through Nov. 5. Locations in the Independent readership area include: Elmhurst City Hall 209 N. York Rd., Elmhurst Addison Township Office 401 N. Addison Rd., Addison Hours at both locations are Monday thru Friday 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Chrysalis Custom Hair emerges in local area Creates custom wigs especially for women living with cancer

Before a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis – its protective shell -it must go through many stages of change, not all of which are as beautiful as the colorful butterfly ready to spread its wings.

As a cancer-support specialist, Kimberly Johnson learned very well the stages that cancer patients struggle through. For years, working with not-for-profits to support those diagnosed with cancer, Johnson found “many women were most upset about the prospect of losing their hair.”

“I listened and heard how women dealing with hair release [and searching for wigs] were treated poorly or not in the right environment,” she said.

This knowledge blossomed into an opportunity to help women cope with cancer. Johnson founded Chrysalis Custom Hair, a comfortable and private place where women can explore wig options and find the perfect fit just for them.

Johnson said her best friend’s mother was a cancer survivor and also a butterfly photographer.

“After searching for a business name for about a year, I saw some of her butterfly artwork in my friend’s home, and it all just clicked,” she said.

Chicago about five years ago. The Elmhurst boutique followed in May 2018 and is designed similarly to the Chicago spot. Inside the front door and windows, frosted for maximum privacy, the location is clean, cheerfully decorated with comfortable furniture and gentle lighting. It is also accented with butterfly artwork seemingly placed to remind all who enter about the beauty of a butterfly after it emerges from its cocoon.

Chrysalis, whose tag line is “Just Women, Just Cancer, Just Hair,” is open six days a week by appointment only. Johnson always makes sure a receptionist is on hand to answer the phone during business hours.

“It’s our first point of contact with you, and we know you want a human being to talk to,” said Johnson.

“Sometimes you’re scared and confused. And when you come in, we want you to feel comfortable. It’s hard enough to not feel like yourself (while living with cancer), but to look into a mirror and not see yourself is very, very hard.”

Getting the right match Johnson recommends that women interested in getting fitted for a wig upon receiving a cancer diagnosis should come in for an initial visit as soon as possible. It’s helpful for them to bring along pictures of themselves prior to hair release.

Humble beginnings “Our [stylists] are amazing artChrysalis first opened its doors in ists...typically the selection is

matched to the same kind of hair as the client’s, the same general color,” she said. “It’s not a great time to go changing your look when you’re already not feeling yourself.”

Many of the clients walk out same day with a wig custom-fitted and cut just for them. Some can take a little longer depending on if a custom color or highlights are wanted.

Chrysalis has a vast inventory of pre-colored wigs, that is, handcut and hand-colored, Johnson explained. And like many products, there are a variety of colors, styles and costs. Chrysalis provides wigs made of synthetic hair and human hair.

“Some custom wigs can take 100 man-hours to assemble,” said Johnson. “I have those sewn together overseas and when they come to us, our hair stylist experts fit them onto [a client’s] head and into her cut.”

For synthetics, the cost can range between $750-$950. Natural hair starts at $1500. Johnson explained that cost increases are based on length, construction, and how much work needs to be done to make a replica of a client’s hair.

Ledonne Scout team reorganizes Township library On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9, Eagle Scout candidate Vincenzo Ledonne, along with members and parents of Scout Troop #199 in Villa Park, revamped the senior library at the York Township Senior Center in Township Hall at 1502 South Meyers Road in Lombard. It was done as Ledonne’s Eagle Scout project.

Vincenzo and his team organized books in alphabetical order by author’s last name, thinned out the books, magazines and puzzles of old and damaged materials. Many York Township seniors spend a good deal of time in the library and the vast majority are thrilled to have such a neat, clean and organized library space and appreciate the wonderful job that was done as Vincenzo’s Eagle Project.

“I want to thank Vincenzo Ledonne and Eagle Scout Troop #199 for caring enough about our seniors to complete a project that is so beneficial to them,” said York Township Supervisor John W. Valle. “We are proud to have such generous support from our York Township youth.”

Stricter penalties proposed in road construction zones

The Illinois Tollway Authority and the state legislature are working together to keep Illinois work zones safe by imposing stricter penalties for reckless driving in Illinois work zones.

The proposed legislation would increase the fine for hitting a construction worker in a work zone from $10,000 to $25,000 and would create a new encroachment violation that would impose a fine for going around cones and barrels.

This legislation comes in light of an accident in which Bartlett resident Frank Caputo, a flagger, was struck and killed in an Illinois Tollway work zone.

Willowbrook football team moves to 6-0, clinches another playoff berth Warriors boys golf team takes third at conference meet

The Willowbrook football team punched another playoff ticket for itself after a 28-14 West Suburban Conference crossover win against York in Elmhurst.

The win moved the Warriors to 6-0 on the season. Willowbrook now has won 16 of its last 18 contests dating back to last season.

Willowbrook is in the state playoffs for a third year in a row after advancing to the state quarterfinals in each of the last two seasons.

The Warriors return to WSC Gold Division play Friday against Morton in the regular season home finale in Villa Park.

Sophomore Tyler King has moved into the team’s No. 1 position in the lineup. Matt Caron, a senior, is running second. “Both are competing with each other and are getting better every day,” said Willowbrook coach TJ Artman.

Artman said the team has good cohesion as it heads to the key part of the season. “We’re running our first through seventh runners at around a 60-second split, so that’s good,” said Artman. “We are working on running as a pack and getting that split time closer.”

In addition to King, Willowbrook also has been bolstered of late by the efforts of senior Gavin Hitzeman and junior Brandon Heselton. “Tyler is turning it up and him being a sophomore is exciting,” said Artman.

“Gavin is new to cross country and is doing a great job breaking into the top-seven of the lineup. Brandon is a junior who is taking on a leadership role on and off the course.”

Willowbrook does not compete this weekend and will return to action at the WSC Gold meet at Hinsdale South a week from Saturday.

“The season has gone by fast,” said Artman. “We all can’t believe it’s almost conference and state race season. Our goal is to qualify the team to sectional.”

Willowbrook golf The Willowbrook boys golf team recently placed third at the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet held at par-72 Prairie Bluff.

Willowbrook took third in the seven-team meet with a 347 score.

Logan Rattana, a junior, was eighth with an 84. Senior Taylor Sarovich also shot 84, but took ninth and senior Jackson Hathaway shot 86 and finished in 10th place. Senior Joey Guthrie shot 93 to round out Willowbrook’s scorecard.

Rattana, Sarovich and Hathaway were named to the all-WSC Gold team.

Boys soccer team runs winning streak to nine games Blazers 3-0 in conference play heading into home stretch

The Addison Trail boys soccer team’s fortunes have turned around in a hurry.

The Blazers at one point were sitting below-.500 at 3-4, but have since rattled off nine wins in a row and now stand at 12-4 overall and 3-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

In recent action, Addison Trail downed York 2-1 in a WSC crossover contest, scored a 4-3 WSC Gold win over Leyden and upended Neuqua Valley 2-0 on senior night at Addison Trail.

In previous conference play, Addison Trail shutout Hinsdale South 4-0 and Willowbrook by a 3-0 count.

The Blazers square off with Proviso East and Downers Grove South in conference play this week and then have their WSC Gold finale against Morton this coming Tuesday in a match that could determine the WSC Gold champion.

“We hope that when we play Morton that it’s for the conference championship, but we know we have to take care of business first,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini.

So what has led to the team’s rapid turnaround?

“Our team defense,” said Dini.

“We have nine shutouts. We started off the year 3-4 and switched our defense around and switched formation. Since then we haven’t lost.”

Addison Trail also has benefitted from the return of center-midfielder Eduardo Gomez. “He missed our first five games,” Dini pointed out.

“His senior leadership gave us the ability to move guys around and have them play their true positions.”

Sam Sandoval has nine shutouts in goal for the Blazers and has a 1.2 goals-against average and a save percentage of 85.

“He’s been our leader back there,” said Dini. “He’s very vocal. He’s one of the best goaltenders in the area.

His stats speak for themselves. He has that experience as far as being a leader. He’s one of our top guys.”

Addison Trail’s offense also has improved of late. “We’re averaging almost three goals a game now,” said Dini.

Melvin Mora, through late last

week, was leading the team with 12 goals and four assists. He’s a threeyear varsity player. Sophomore Anthony Hernandez had 10 goals to go with four assists.

“We have good balance between those two and our midfielders have stepped up,” said Dini. “We go 15 deep and our subs go in there and give us that extra punch.”

One of those super-subs is Leo Acosta who had six goals and five assists through late last week.

“We can put him in at midfield or forward and when he comes in he gives us a spark when we need it,” said Dini.

Senior leadership as a whole has benefitted the Blazers this season.

“Of our 18 guys, 11 are seniors,” said Dini. “They know that it’s crunch time.”

Dini noted Addison Trail beat three teams ranked in the Chicagoland-area top 20 within the last two weeks.

“We’re getting hot at the right time,” he said. “We still have a chance to win the conference title if we beat the teams we are playing (this week). We want a chance at Morton for the conference title. The guys are excited.

We are playing well. Our team defense is very solid and we are moving the ball well.”

Fenton girls volleyball team wins Ridgewood tournament Bison sweep five matches to win second title of season

The Fenton girls volleyball team added some more gold to the trophy case recently.

The Bison went a perfect 5-0 to win the Ridgewood tournament and secure the squad’s second tournament title of the season.

More importantly, Fenton ballooned its overall record to 17-6. The Bison started off 1-0 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

At Ridgewood, Fenton downed Ridgewood 25-20, 25-19 and then defeated Chicago Taft 25-17, 25-15.

Fenton also upended Lisle 25-19, 2511, Woodlands Academy 25-16, 25-8 and DePaul Prep 25-13, 25-16.

In other recent play, the Bison lost 25-14, 25-18 to IC IC College Prep in an MSC crossover match. Fenton also dropped a 21-25, 28-26, 25-18 non-conference match against Leyden and downed Ridgewood 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 in a MSC Red contest.

Through 23 matches, Mackenzie Miller was leading the team with 74 service aces. Vicky Krzyszkowski had 128 kills, while Miller was tops in assists with 371. Krzyszkowski was the team leader in blocks with 35 and Payton Pugliese had 101 digs to pace the Bison.

“We have had to do some shuffling of the lineup for different reasons and the girls have responded in a very good way,” said Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer. “The depth we knew we had is really starting to show.”

Kleidorfer also likes where the team’s passing game is headed. “Our passing has been a work in progress and continues to slowly get better,” she said. “We spend a lot of practice time working on our passing.”

Serving continues to be a point of emphasis as the season heads into the latter stages. “We really need to focus on our serving,” said Kleidorfer.

“Serving was a strength for the longest time and lately we have really been struggling. We really need to concentrate on our serving when a game or a match is on the line. We have had too many service errors late in games and matches.”

Two players who have taken it up a notch of late are Sydney Minard and Iza Faron. “Sydney had been mostly used as a server but has recently started playing outside hitter in addition to serving,” Kleidorfer noted. “She had a really good match against Ridgewood

the other day. Iza is another one who has taken a big step forward. Needing a libero after our top two were out, Iza stepped into that role against Ridgewood.”

“The girls are really excited about how the team has been playing and realize they have a great opportunity to complete a season that Fenton hasn’t seen in 25-plus years,” said Kleidorfer.

The Bison finished last in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division last season, but returns senior Ruth Kirkwood who has moved up from the team’s No. 3 runner last year to the top position this season.

Key newcomers include freshman Noelia Vazquez, along with assistant coaches Laura Avila and Marisol Garcia.

“The team will be mentally tough and properly conditioned,” said Kekstadt. “Our summer camp was extensive and effective in changing the culture of cross country at Fenton.

We are showing consistent improvement every week and we will be at our best at the end of the season.”

Kekstadt said the program has the next level in mind. “To get to the next level we need to grow the program and attract hard-working, athletic kids,” he explained. “This year the coaches and I have established a strong foundation for a great program that the school and community will be proud of. We have to be patient and keep each individual kid healthy and strong. If we invest in our youth athletes and do things the right way, the program will flourish in the next two years.”

To date, Kekstadt has been pleased with the progress of sophomores Lupita Honorato, Audrey Benitez, Angelika Gasior and Amy Czauderna.

“All four are showing impressive improvement over the last year and they keep getting faster,” the coach noted.

Kekstadt said when he spoke with Fenton’s principal he laid out several specific goals. “The guarantee I gave the principal was that we would place better in the sectional meet in 2018,” he said. “The ultimate goal is to make it to Peoria in November. Last year the team had Jessica McCauley, who qualified for state in her freshman and sophomore seasons. We don’t have a returning state qualifier this year, but we do have a great team captain in senior Ruth Kirkwood.”

Strength throughout the lineup will be a key as the season heads into the home stretch. “We are only as strong as our fifth runner,” said Kekstadt. “We will need to continue to improve and stay healthy if we are going to reach our goal.”

Fenton took 15th at its Kurtz invitational it hosted in early September.

The Bison then took fifth out of 18 teams at the DePaul Prep invitational a week later.

Ridgewood’s other loss was to Elmwood Park (42-13), the same team Fenton lost to two weeks ago by a 56-32 count.

Parks and Rec prepares for Halloween Happenings Sponsors, businesses, participants sought The Villa Park Parks & Recreation invites area merchants, scout groups, clubs and organizations to participate in Halloween Happenings, Friday, Oct. 19 from 6-8:30 p.m., by sponsoring a trick-or-treat station which will be set up outside on the grounds of the Iowa Community Center.
