On Friday, Oct. 13, Park Art Center (PAC) Board of Directors made the difficult decision to close its gallery and storefront location at 9 East Park Boulevard in Villa Park effective the end of October. Visitors are still welcome through Oct. 28 to view the current exhibit, Local Boys Done Good: the Works of Tony Fitzpatrick and Kirk Kerndl. If is available free and open to the public on Tuesdays – Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

PAC will also maintain its website and Facebook presence for continuity and outreach opportunities.

According to Paulina Jimenez, PAC President, the Board continues to search for a new location for its gallery.

“It is more important than ever to solidify our relocation through our fundraising efforts,” she said. “You can help us continue to provide art to the community by making a donation through to PAC’s website at parkartcenter.org and click on “Donate” button. This campaign is fueled by Generosity, the nonprofit crowdfunding branch of Indiegogo.”

PAC will continue its Outreach programs with senior centers, schools, hospitals, park districts, libraries, art fairs, and UCP Seguin, as well as provide private offsite art classes. At the community level, PAC will continue to be involved

State announces video gaming revenues outpace casinos for first time

According to a report issued by the state legislature’s Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, video gaming has reached the point that it is now more profitable than casino gambling.

The state reportedly made $296 million from the machines during the 2017 fiscal year that ended June 30.

Meanwhile, Illinois’ 10 casinos generated just $270 million for the state, a $7 million drop from the previous fiscal year, according to the Commission’s report. It is the first time video gaming revenue has outpaced casino revenues since the machines began operating in 2012.

Only Rivers Casino in Des Plaines and Hollywood Casino in Aurora made more money in 2017 than they did in the previous fiscal year, according to the report.

“There’s no doubt video gambling has had a significant impact on riverboat casinos,” said Tom Swoik, executive director of the Illinois Casino Gaming Association. “The market is oversaturated and revenues are just shifting from one spot to another.”

Admissions to the casinos, from which the state draws $2 per visitor, are down nearly 6 percent this year, costing the state almost $1.5 million in taxes.

Video gambling has been a boon for the state at the casinos’ expense.

The state’s video gaming revenue rose by $44 million in 2017, a 17.5 percent increase over the prior year.

At the same time, there was only a 12.5 percent increase in the number of video gambling terminals across the state.

Comparing video gaming to other gambling revenues When combined with receipts from the lottery and horse racing, the state’s gambling revenues climbed 7.9 percent to $1.31 billion this year, the report said. The state’s horse racing revenue was stagnant at $6 million this year, generated from just three remaining tracks in the state, including Arlington Park.

Where the money goes Revenue from video gambling is split four ways among business owners, the state, local governments and the companies that actually own the machines, called terminal operators.

Terminal operators and business owners each get 35 percent of all revenue, the state gets 25 percent, and the local government gets 5 percent.

While there is a limit to how many casinos operate in the state, video gambling terminals face fewer restrictions. Essentially, any business with a license to sell alcohol for onsite consumption in a town or county that allows video gambling can install up to five machines.

At the end of the 2017 fiscal year, there were 26,783 terminals in 6,124 establishments throughout the state.

The most recent data from the Illinois Gaming Board -- just three months later -- showed there were 27,681 terminals in 6,249 businesses statewide.

Situation not helpful to those fighting addiction Casino operators aren’t the only ones concerned about the proliferation of video gambling.

“It’s especially dangerous for those who are having problems with gambling, and it’s very difficult for them to resist the temptation because it is so prevalent,” said Anita Bedell, executive director of the Illinois Church Action on Alcohol & Addiction Problems. “People who might have only gambled when they went to Las Vegas, all they have to do now is walk down the street.”

While the state gaming board fought a losing battle to keep the machines to just bars, service clubs or veterans halls, video gambling terminals are now in family restaurants and some grocery stores.

Mariano’s parent company recalls chili, soup served at salad bar No confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consumption

According to a report issued by parent company Roundy’s Supermarkets, Mariano’s is recalling about eight tons of chili and soup after an employee found pieces of hard plastic in one of the bags.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service reported on Wednesday, Oct. 18 that the Wisconsin-based parent of Mariano’s stores pulled the ready-toeat chili and soup items which were produced and packaged on Oct. 3, 2017, with a “Sell By” date of Dec. 2, 2017. The products were sold to retail stores in Illinois and Wisconsin to be prepared for sale to consumers in the soup bar area, according to Roundy’s

web site.

The following products are part of the recall: • 24-pound boxes containing six 4-pound bags of “Meat and Bean Soup in Tomato Base” with lot code 354191-2767.

• 24-pound boxes containing six 4-pound bags of “Santa Fe Style Turkey and White Chicken Chili with Beans” with lot code 354464-2767.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 33997” or “P-33997” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations in Illinois and Wisconsin.

The problem was discovered Monday, Oct. 16, when Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. was notified by a mem-

ber of the firm’s food safety team that plastic foreign material had been discovered in a bag of Meat and Bean Soup in Tomato Base. The company decided to expand the recall to include all of the soups produced on Oct. 3.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a health care provider.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to where they were purchased.

Roundy’s operates more than 150 retail grocery stores under the Pick ‘n Save, Copps, Metro Market and Mariano’s retail banners.

Resident input needed for public zoning in Village

On Halloween and every day, impaired driving is scary

The Village of Villa Park is hosting a number of Open House events to receive public input on a draft Zoning Ordinance Update document.

One Open House will be held at the Villa Park Public Library (305 S. Ardmore Ave) on Monday, Oct. 23, from 1-3 p.m. A second Open House will be held at Iowa Community Center (335 N. Iowa Ave) on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 6-8 p.m.

The draft document can be found at villaparkzoning.com/, where visitors can leave their feedback via submission form, or on the Village’s website at invillapark.com.

This Halloween, Villa Park is cracking down on impaired drivers with an aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort and is giving a fair warning to holiday revelers: Keep the party off the road.

“On Halloween, we urge you to beware of impaired driving,” said Sgt. James Cihak. “Driving impaired by alcohol or drugs is deadly, it is illegal and it will get you pulled over and arrested this Halloween.”

In 2015, that number rose slightly to 315 and remained the same in 2016.

Just one DUI arrest could cost an estimated $18,000 or more and result in revoked driving privileges for up to a year.

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign urges everyone to follow these simple tips to help keep our roads safe during Halloween: • Plan a safe way to get home before you attend a party.

• Designate a sober driver, take

public transportation, use your favorite ride-sharing service, or call a sober friend or family member to get home.

• Walking while impaired can be just as dangerous as driving impaired.

Designate a sober friend to walk youhome.

• Use your communitys sober ride program.

• If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement as soon as it is safe to do so.

• If you see an impaired person about to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely.

The Halloween enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

District 88 joins Hamilton Education Program On Oct. 18, nearly 150 District 88 students (along with about 15 District 88 staff members) attended a performance of the musical “Hamilton” at CIBC Theatre through the Hamilton Education Program.

That program is a partnership between “Hamilton,” local donors (including The Rockefeller Foundation) and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. It combines Founding Era classroom resources developed by the institute, document-based student projects and a special student matinee of “Hamilton” for sophomore and junior students enrolled in American history

classes.

The day included performances of selected student-created pieces that were based on the Founding Era curriculum. District 88 students who performed on stage are: • Addison Trail juniors Connor White, Rosemarie Mercado and Kristopher Kusnierz, who read an original poem about the Boston Massacre.

• Willowbrook sophomore Emily O’Brochta, who read her original poem entitled “Freedom Rings.”

Participants also were able to ask questions of the “Hamilton” cast and had lunch at the Palmer House.

District 88 schools invited to ‘Raising Healthy Teens in Digital Age’

Educators from the Robert Crown Center for Health Education will be conducting parent information nights to educate parents about ways in they can help prevent drug abuse by their children. The program is “Raising Healthy Teens in a Digital Age: Drug Abuse Prevention.”

The free event will describe why kids are vulnerable decision makers due to brain development; identify what kids are seeing in regards to drug use, including current research, trends, and barriers to making healthy choices; develop skills on how to reduce the risk of drug use through healthy relationships and conversations; create a conversation

action plan; and identify drug abuse prevention resources.

The 75-minute program is being offered at four different locations on different dates to meet the needs of families with busy schedules. The presentation will be held: • Monday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. at Indian Trail Junior High School in Addison; • Monday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park; • Monday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. at Addison Public Library; and • Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at Addison Trail High School.

Addison Oct. 19 Police said an officer re-sponded to the Waukegan Police Department to transport Patrick J. Gillen, 53, of Addison, to be pro-cessed on an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for retail theft and criminal trespass to land.

Oct. 18 Joseph Snodgrass, 33, of Schaumburg, was charged with battery and disorderly conduct in the 300 block of W. Lake at around 4:59 p.m. Police said Snodgrass used profanities and pushed a vic-tim at the Elmhurst Medical Center.

Oct. 17 Police said Alberto Gal-vez, 21, of Addison, had two original warrants out of the Addison Police Department for unlawful contact with a street gang member and for resisting or obstructing a police officer, as well as four failure to appear warrants out of the DuPage County Sher-iff’s Department for aggra-vated battery/ great bodily harm, unlawful contact with a street gang member, unlawful possession of drug parapher-nalia and resisting or ob-structing a police officer sub-sequent to a call for a suspi-cious vehicle in the 400 block of Stevens Drive at around 8:43 p.m. in

Iowa Ave. at around 1:35 a.m. Police said the two suspects went to a victim’s residence and began to fight with him, punching the victim in the face and about his body. A witness to the alleged battery attempted to break up the fight, ending in her being struck by the two suspects, according to police.

Oct. 11 Paul J. Kopulos, 45, of Roselle, was charged with DUI in the 2100 block of Army Trail Road at around 3:43 a.m. Police said an of-ficer responded to a call of Kopulos asleep behind the wheel of a drive-thru lane at a restaurant. Kopulos was found to be DUI, according to police.

Villa Park Oct. 13 Jermilla Y. Hill, 44, of Villa Park, was charged with leaving the scene of an acci-dent, failure to reduce speed and improper lane usage near Division and Ardmore at around 10:39 p.m.

Sokito D. Taylor, 19, of Darien, and Yazmine Marquez, 20, of Clarendon Hills, were charged with retail theft in the 100 block of W. Roosevelt at around 8:07 p.m.

known male suspect removed four video games the shelf of a store and left the store with-out paying for the items.

Oct. 11 Aaliyah Polanco, 19, of North Platte, Neb., was charged with possession of cannabis and no seat belt near Route 83 and North Avenue at around 11:47 p.m.

Gustine Ross, 55, of Villa Park, was charged with diso-beying a police officer, inter-ference with police, failure to display a driver’s license, expired registration and un-lawful pushing of a disabled vehicle near St. Charles and Ardmore at around 8:32 a.m.

Burglary was reported in the 300 block of N. Ardmore. Police said that between 11 and 11:15 a.m., an unknown suspect entered an apartment and stole currency and a gift card from a table.

Criminal damage was reported in the 400 block of E. North Ave. Police said that between 12 noon Oct. 4 and 2:23 p.m. Oct. 11, an un-known suspect shot three exterior windows of a build-ing with a BB pellet gun and damaged them.

Criminal damage was reported at a sporting goods store. Police said that be-tween 8 p.m. Oct. 10 and 10:45 a.m. Oct. 11, an un-known suspect broke the window on the front door of a business.

LifeSource presents District 88 with blooddrive proceeds for student scholarships

During the Oct. 16 District 88 Board of Education meeting, LifeSource presented District 88 with a check for $7,750.

The money is from blood drives hosted during the 2016-17 school year at Addison Trail and Willowbrook and will go toward scholarships for District 88 students. District 88 received the check for having 535 people participate in the blood drives. According to LifeSource, each unit of blood collected supports three lives, which means 1,605 lives have been supported thanks to the generosity of those donors.

Berlin announced last week that the Second District Appellate Court of Illinois has affirmed the First-Degree Murder conviction of William Clifford, 38, for the murder of his father, then 63 year old William Clifford, Sr. On January 30, 2015, a jury found Clifford guilty of First Degree Murder following a four-day-long trial. On March 23, 2015, Judge Robert Kleeman sentenced him to thirty-five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

On May 28, 2011, Westmont police officers responded to a call of a fight in progress with injuries at Clifford Jr.’s residence. Upon their arrival, officers found the elder Clifford lying in a hallway on the third floor of the complex, bleeding from his upper body. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. An investigation into the murder revealed that Clifford, Sr. went to his son’s residence to visit him.

During their visit, a fight broke out between the two men resulting in the younger Clifford repeatedly stabbing

his father about his upper body.

In his appeal, Clifford challenged the admissibility of the State’s expert witness’ opinion that his palm print matched a print that was found on the murder weapon.

Clifford also argued that the sentence of 35 years was not warranted because the trial court erroneously refused to consider certain mitigating evidence at the sentencing hearing.

In its affirmation, the Appellate Court found that the Trial Court acted properly and within its power concerning the State’s expert witness’ opinion.

Regarding Clifford’s second argument, the Appellate Court held that assertion was “flatly contradicted by the record” and that “the trial court twice indicated that it considered the defendant’s mental illness to be a mitigating factor.” Justice Zenoff delivered the judgment of the Court with Justices Jorgensen and Birkett concurring.

Clifford’s appeal was defended

by Kristin Schwind of the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Criminal Appeals Division.

District 88 celebrates Teen Read Week From Oct. 9 to 13, Addison Trail and Willowbrook celebrated Teen Read Week.

Activities included an afterschool screening of the movie “The Outsiders” (based on the novel by S.E. Hinton, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year); hosting a “read-in” event, where students and staff spent a resource period reading; and raffling off restaurant gift cards to students who participated in the schools’ Lincoln Award and Read for a Lifetime programs.

It began in 1998 and takes place annually in October. Its purpose is to encourage teens to be regular readers and library users. This year’s event featured the theme “Unleash Your Story.”

State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, recently held a conversation on how com-munities can break down the stigma that surrounds mental health.

“The first barrier we face when dealing with mental health issues is stigma. No person should ever feel anx-ious or embarrassed about brain health,” said Conroy. “These discussions will provide people a plat-form for an honest conversa-tion about brain health. If we want to find solutions for our friends, family and neighbors who struggle with mental health issues, then we need to talk about it.”

Conroy was inspired to host this series of discussions after learning about how the stigma around mental health has discouraged people from seeking help. According to the World Health Organiza-tion stigma is one of the largest barriers to accessing care. 1 in 5 Americans struggle with mental health issues and only 40% of adults receive care for their illness.

Conroy’s series of On the Table discussions are open to all local residents and will be held throughout the district over the coming months. The next conversations will be Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Bloom-ingdale Public Library locat-ed at 101 Fairfield Way, and on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Glenside Public Library locat-ed 25 E. Fullerton in Glendale Heights.

The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park welcomes Colonel Gregory Fontenot, U.S. Army (Ret.), on Wednesday, Nov.1. He will discuss “The 1st Infantry Division and the U.S. Army Transformed,” a narrative history of the “Big Red One” from 1970 through the Operation Desert Storm victory celebration in 1991.

The free presentation inside the Cantigny Visitors Center begins at 7:30 pm. Parking also is complimentary.

Published in June and coinciding with the 100th anniversary of 1st Infantry Division’s formation, Fontenot’s book closes a gap in the historiography of the late Cold War U.S. Army and is crucial for understanding the current situation in the

Middle East.

The author commanded a tank battalion in Operation Desert Storm and an armor brigade in Bosnia. A former director of the School of Advanced Military Studies and the University of Foreign Military and Cultural Studies, Fontenot is the co-author of “On Point: The United States Army in Operation Iraqi Freedom.” He is a Distinguished Military Graduate of Kansas State University, commissioned in 1971 as an armor officer.

Doors open at 6:30 pm on Nov. 1.

Discovering the joy of Miracle Marula oil

The little pump dispenser sat on the sink in my bathroom for more than a month before I noticed the label. I hadn’t read it at the store; just pulled the liquid hand soap off the shelf and threw it into my cart without paying much attention. Hand soap is hand soap, right?

It turns out I hit the jackpot with my random choice of product. Like I said, I didn’t notice right away. But when I did the words on the label became impossible to ignore: Miracle Marula oil.

Wow! I was in possession of Marula oil (of the miraculous kind).

How could a person get so lucky?

I did a little happy skip right there in the bathroom. But then my brain went to a place that sort of changed everything.

I thought, “What the heck is Marula oil?”

I’d never heard of it. To think I

lived my entire life without ever crossing paths with Marula oil. I wasn’t sure whether I should be embarrassed or glad I was finally discovering this miraculous substance.

I had to know more. I thought maybe the rest of the label might provide a clue as to the secrets and benefits of this magical Marula oil.

The mystery took an unexpected turn when I checked the ingredients and discovered that despite its prominent placement on the front of the bottle, Marula wasn’t even listed.

Game on.

Despite a lack of Marula, the ingredient list contained 21 items. Four were dyes. One was water. That left me 16 to investigate. Most of them had long chemical compound-type names but a quick Google search showed me their true purposes. They were substances like detergent, foam booster, surfactant, anti-microbial, thickener and skin conditioner. All logical and expected ingredients for hand soap. But no Marula.

Then I found it – right between a pH balancer and preservative: sclerocarya birrea seed oil, otherwise known on the Google as Marula.

But what was it, really?

Back to my research.

The sclerocarya birrea, a.k.a.

Marula, is a medium-sized tree that grows in the woodlands of Southern Africa, West Africa and Madagascar.

It produces small yellow fruit that

has eight times more vitamin C than oranges and is considered a delicacy by elephants, giraffes and rhinos – to name a few. Now I understand why elephants never catch colds.

They may, however, catch a buzz.

When the fruit becomes overripe, the animals continue eating it and experience a Marula drunkenness that one has to see to believe. Imagine an intoxicated elephant stumbling across your path. Gives a whole new level of excitement to the idea of an African safari.

The oil of the Marula comes from the seeds of the fruit. It’s used in cooking, cosmetics, as a meat preservative and to treat leather so putting it in hand soap could fulfill double duty – depending on how leathery your hands are. Then again, if it has preservative qualities perhaps your skin benefits trifold.

Marula oil is touted as having

powerful antioxidants, nutrients, omegas, essential fatty acids and the vitamin C referenced above. It’s an anti-aging, hydrating, skin repairing powerhouse – according to one website that’s selling the stuff for a hundred bucks an ounce. Ouch.

It isn’t always that pricey. You can find it online for a fraction of that cost. Or you can simply buy some liquid hand soap for a couple of bucks.

Either way, it beats going all the way to Africa and getting trampled by a stampede of inebriated elephants.

Addison Trail football team closes season with a win Blazers girls volleyball team defeats Wheaton-Warrenville South

The Addison Trail football team capped its 2017 season on a high note with a 64-6 victory over Proviso East in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest held in Maywood.

The Blazers closed the season with a 4-5 overall record and finished in fifth place in the WSC Gold with a 2-4 record.

Addison Trail won its final two games of the season by a combined 98-13 score. The Blazers missed becoming playoff eligible by one game.

a 15-20 overall record. The Blazers finished third in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division behind first-place Downers Grove South and second-place Hinsdale South.

The Blazers won their final regular-season match against Wheaton-Warrenville South.

Statistically, junior outside hitter Nina Muell was leading the team in kills with 299 through late last week.

Junior setter Sam Pociecha had 346 assists. Senior defensive specialist Sofia Susa had 38 aces, while junior middle blocker Serena Gilliam had 38 blocks. Susa also was the team leader in digs with 217.

The Willowbrook football team entered new territory in Week 9.

The Warriors recorded a 40-6 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory over Downers Grove South. The win gave Willowbrook its first-ever WSC Gold title. The Warriors finished a perfect 6-0 in conference play and moved to 8-1 overall and will, with almost 100 percent certainty, host a first-round playoff game this weekend.

It’s Willowbrook’s first outright conference title in football since 1982.

Since beating Leyden by a touchdown in Week 3 of the season, Willowbrook has defeated opponents by scores of 45-0, 38-33, 45-22, 56-6, 57-12 and 40-6. The Warriors have scored 40 or more points in six of its nine games this season. Willowbrook’s only loss came in Week 2 to a Hinsdale Central team that finished 7-2 and took second in the WSC Silver this season behind only Glenbard West.

Willowbrook’s 364 points scored this season are the most of any team in either division of the West Suburban Conference and its 113 points allowed also is tops among the 14 teams in the Gold and Silver Divisions.

Willowbrook’s 8-1 regular-season record is the program’s best showing since the 1994 team went 8-1 and lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs. The Warriors now have achieved back-to-back eight-win seasons. The 2016 team advanced to the Class 7A state quarterfinals.

Willowbrook boys soccer The Willowbrook boys soccer team opened the Class 3A playoffs with a 3-2 win over Hoffman Estates in regional quarterfinal action.

Senior Miguel Correa, sophomore Eric Hoda and senior Steve Cerda each had a goal for the Warriors.

The Warriors then dropped a 5-0 decision to St. Charles North in the regional semifinals. The loss broke a four-game Willowbrook winning streak.

“The hardest part on Tuesday (after the St. Charles North game) was the conversations I had with the seniors,” said Willowbrook coach Ed DeLaCruz.

Styler saw other positives in the final regular-season match against Wheaton-Warrenville South. “We ended our last match with an improved sense of urgency and com-

posure,” he said. “We hope to build on the bright spots heading into the playoffs.”

Addison Trail opened Class 4A regional play earlier in the week against Proviso West. The winner of that match moved onto the regional semifinals this past Tuesday against Wheaton St. Francis.

Fenton boys soccer The Fenton boys soccer team dropped a 4-3 decision in penalty kicks to Chicago Lake View in the championship game of the Class 2A Fenton regional in Bensenville. The game was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation and Lake View won the penalty-kick phase 4-3.

Earlier, Fenton was a 4-1 winner against Chicago Prosser. Ivan Jaramillo had three goals, while Branny Salas had one goal. Angel Barriga had four assists.

In late regular-season play, Fenton tied Lake Park 3-3. Cesar Mendoza, Barriga and Jaramillo each had a goal for the Bison.

Fenton football The Fenton football team lost 62-7 to IC Catholic Prep in Week 9 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division action in Elmhurst.

Fenton finished the season with a 2-7 overall record and went 0-5 in MSC Blue play.

IC Catholic Prep, the defending Class 3A state champions, finished the regular season 8-1 and won the MSC Blue with a 5-0 record.

Fenton boys cross country The Fenton boys cross-country team finished third at its own Class 2A Fenton regional and advanced to the sectional round this weekend.

Fenton had 75 points, 16 points behind second-place St. Viator and 26 shy of first-place Deerfield.

Senior Cristian Sanchez took ninth with a time of 17:02 to lead Fenton.

Junior Rudy Almarales was 10th in 17:04. Senior Michael Lieggi was 16th in 17:17, while senior Jeremy

Lodewyck was 19th in 17:26. Senior Alex Whyte was 21st in 17:28. Sophomore Samuel Elizondo was 27th in 17:41, while junior Oscar Varela was 36th in 18:25.

Fenton girls cross country The Fenton girls cross-country team took fourth at its own Class 2A Fenton regional in Bensenville and advanced to sectional action Saturday.

Fenton finished with 106 points, one point shy of third-place Chicago Mather. St. Viator won the regional title with 23 points.

Senior Jessica McCauley was 10th for Fenton in 20:49. Senior Charity Bullis was 17th in 21:45. Junior Ruth Kirkwood was 18th in 22:00. Freshman Guadalupe Honorato was 30th in 24:19. Freshman Angelika Gasior was 31st in 24:26. Junior Angela Duarte was 38th in 24:46, while senior Jacqueline Ponce was 48th in 25:57.

Fenton girls volleyball team breaks 45-match conference losing streak Opens postseason play at Lake Park

And the Fenton girls volleyball team is thrilled.

The Bison ended a 45-match conference losing streak with a 25-22, 12-25, 25-16 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Wheaton Academy.

In other recent action, Fenton lost 23-25, 25-13, 25-15 to Glenbard South and also lost 25-15, 25-20 to Aurora Central Catholic and defeated Elmwood Park 25-20, 25-17 in non-conference play.

Fenton finished the regular season 13-21 overall and 1-11 in MSC Blue Division play.

Vicky Krzyszkowski had 16 kills in the win against Wheaton Academy, while Mackenzie Miller had 26 assists.

“The most impressive aspect of this team is they kept fighting in all conference matches and were rewarded with the huge conference win,” said Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer.

Kleidorfer noted her team has benefited from strong middle play of late.

“We have really been getting a lot of production out of our middles,” she said.

And the coach noted defense con-

tinues to be a key positive. “Our defense has really become a strong point. Opposing coaches have commented on how well our defense is playing.”

Kleidorfer said Fenton’s recent improvement also stems from time spent in the practice gym.

“We have been having some really good practices,” she said. “The girls have really taken it upon themselves to dial in as we are heading into regionals.”

Also playing well of late has been junior Payton Pugliese. “Payton has really stepped lately in a defensive-specialist role,” said Kleidorder.

Fenton opened up postseason play earlier this week against Maine South at Lake Park.

The Addison Trail boys soccer team concluded its season after a 4-1 loss to York in Class 3A regional semifinal play.

The game against York was tied 0-0 at halftime and York led 2-1 with 10 minutes left in regulation.

“We pushed up numbers to try and get the game-tying goal and ended up letting in two more goals,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini.

The Blazers finished the season 6-12-4 and 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play. Addison Trail tied for third place out of seven teams in the WSC Gold.

Addison Trail won its first playoff game by a 5-2 count against Elk Grove. In earlier action, the Blazers went to a 2-2 tie with Hinsdale Central in a WSC crossover match.

Melvin Mora, a junior, earned both all-sectional and all-WSC Gold honors this season.

Junior Matthew Moran, junior Eduardo Huerta and senior Martin Juarez joined Mora on the all-WSC Gold team.

Mora led the team with five goals and three assists. Luis Saucedo had four goals and four assists, while Christian Garcia had four goals and three assists.

Dini said scoring goals was a struggle for his squad this season.

“Our offense struggled all year, to be honest,” he said. “We were not able to score many goals inside the box and you need those easy goals when you play good teams. Most of our goals were from outside the box and when the other team has a good goalie, it is very difficult to win consistently when that is the case. We are bringing back a lot of players next year so the positive is that they now have experience playing our type of soccer and know where the golden areas are on the soccer field to get easy goals.”

On the flip-side, the Blazers excelled defensively. “Our defense was strong for most of the season,” said Dini. “We averaged letting up just over two goals per game. With the

Sam Sandoval and Jean Avila split time in goal for the Blazers. “Sam and Jean were very even this year in goaltending,” said Dini. “Each played about half the games. Sam only is a junior so he will bring some much-needed experience to the team next season. Our guys are really confident in Sammy’s abilities as a goalie so that is a confidence boost for him. Jean is a senior and will be missed. He was very accountable over his career and would go the extra mile in helping out his teammates and with community service.”

Dini added this year was a good learning experience across the board.

“Our guys had a tough season with only winning six games,” he said.

“They learned what it takes to win at the varsity level and know that next year will be better for wins and losses. I am really excited about the group coming back next year and think we can be a solid soccer team again. We showed resiliency this year with never giving up even if we lacked some of the intangibles it takes to win close games. I believe we will be an above .500 team next season.”

Dini also lauded the play of junior midfielder Alexis Delapaz and Moran, a junior defender. “Alexis has great touch and vision,” he said. “He is very good in tight spaces. He needs to improve his shooting but his ball skills are top-notch. He scored in two of our last three games.

“Matthew played very hard at the center-back position. He never came off the field and was a horse on the field for us with his pace of play and hustle. I am very excited to see him grow into a very solid defender next season.”

Dini is looking forward to getting to work on the 2018 season.

“After such a dominant season last year, this year was tough because we had higher expectations for this

Deerfield is out of the Central Suburban Conference North Division and not only won its Week 9 game to become playoff eligible but prevented Maine West from winning the CSC North title outright. West had to share it with Highland Park. Deerfield has faced six teams with winning records and has a 2-4 record. Willowbrook has faced four teams with winning records and is 3-1. The Warriors have faced only one team with a winning record over the last five weeks (Hinsdale South at 5-4). Both teams played non-conference games against Grayslake schools. Willowbrook defeated 6-3 Grayslake North 42-0, while Deerfield downed 3-6 Grayslake Central 35-7.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team closed out the regular season with a pair of victories over a threematch span.

Willowbrook started last week with a 25-13, 25-15 non-conference loss to Chicago Resurrection. In that match, Charlotte Dewyer had one kill, one block and one dig. Katie Pettinger had one assist. Taylor Balsitis had one kill. Payton Ceh had two kills and three digs. Jenna Krenzel had one dig. Grace Reckamp had two aces. Caliegh Tuma had one kill and one block.

Kaitlyn Karcz had one dig. Katelyn McCann finished with two digs.

Emma Barrington had one kill and one dig. Marissa Marcello had one kill and two assists, while Jessica Ragucci had one block.

The Warriors then defeated Proviso East 25-19, 25-10 in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest.

Dewyer had one kill, while Pettinger had two assists. Balsitis had two kills, one block, three aces and one assist. Ceh had one kill, six as-

sists and two digs. Krenzel had one assist. Reckamp had two aces, seven assists and four digs. Katie Smith had two kills. Tuma had one kill.

Marcello had one kill, four assists and one dig, while Ragucci added two kills and one dig.

Willowbrook then topped West Chicago 25-20, 25-23 in non-conference action to close out the regular season. The Warriors finished the regular season 11-23 overall and 3-3 in WSC Gold action. Willowbrook finished fourth in the conference.

“We had a big win against West Chicago,” said Willowbrook coach Irene Mason. “It was senior night and all the seniors stepped up. We played great.”

Willowbrook also competed in the annual Autumnfest tournament at Glenbard East. “We played some very competitive teams there,” said Mason, who had been sidelined recently with a foot injury sustained in practice. “The coach that was there in my place said our girls worked hard and competed.”

Knights host first round playoff game this week

The IC Catholic Prep football team capped an undefeated conference season with a 62-7 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division victory against Fenton in Elmhurst.

The win gave the Knights the Blue Division title outright and improved their overall record to 8-1.

IC Catholic Prep will open defense of its Class 3A state championship either Friday or Saturday at home against the Watseka co-op team, which sports a 7-2 record. IC Catholic Prep is the No. 5 seed on the top half of the Class 3A bracket, while Watseka is the No. 12 seed.

In the win against Fenton, quarterback CJ Ryan completed 12 of 15 passes for 277 yards and threw for five touchdowns.

The Knights also racked up 248 yards on the ground on only 26 carries (9.5 yards per rush).

Sophomore Tommy Ryan ran four times for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He had a long run of

69 yards. Freshman Kyle Franklin had eight carries for 54 yards and a touchdown, while Lazerick Eatman ran six times for 39 yards.

Junior Khalil Saunders caught five passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Eatman caught a 27-yard touchdown pass.

On defense, sophomore Kevin Cooke had 10 tackles, while junior Kemon Reese had eight tackles. Jacob Lytton and Larry Chavez each had five tackles, while Michael Johnson had four tackles.

Chavez, a sophomore, and Kevin Akins, also a sophomore, each had a quarterback sack, while Andrew Falduto, Lytton and Reese each had an interception. Reese returned his pick 20 yards for a touchdown.

Sophomore Corties Draper, Sean Hipskind and Saunders each had a fumble recovery, while Eatman, Jack Ryan and Saunders each had a pass deflection.

IC Catholic Prep finished the regular season scoring 460 points in nine games while allowing only 91.

The next highest scoring team in the MSC Blue was Elgin St. Edward at 311 points.

The Warriors play in the Sangamon Valley Conference where they finished third with a 3-2 record. Wateska, located in Iroquois County with an 815 area code, faced four teams with winning records and went 2-2, including a 13-12 loss to potential second-round foe Paxton-Buckley-Loda.

IC Catholic Prep has scored no less than 45 points in its last seven games and has broken 50 in the last three. Wateska co-ops with St. Anne High School, which last had a football team in 1977.

We’ve been instilling that in them all season and maybe we’re peaking at the right time. The last few times we’ve been out there the defensive intensity has been impressive.”

Mason noted her team has a youthful look to it with a freshman, a sophomore, eight juniors and four seniors on the squad.

“Everybody has improved skillwise,” she said. “It’s a young group on the varsity. They are getting up to varsity playing speed and figuring out how to score. Their volleyball skills have improved all-around.

I’m proud of them for the hard work they’ve put in during practice. It’s paid off. Our setters are doing a good job of moving the ball around and figuring out who the hot hitter is. We’re getting better at basic volleyball skills. A lot of our girls don’t have a ton of experience playing at the big clubs. They all have gotten better as the season has gone on.”

Dewyer, Mason noted, had a strong outing at the recent Elk Grove tournament. “Charlotte played her best volleyball during the entire tournament there,” said Mason. “She had seven kills in one of the matches. She was passing the ball great and her energy was great the whole match.”

Smith also played well in the West Chicago bout. “Katie stood out with her all-around play,” said Mason.

“She had a lot of touches on defense and helped get a lot of balls up. She played with a lot of heart and is a hard-working kid.”

And senior middle Balsitis also caught the coach’s eye in recent matches. “Taylor is consistent,’ said Mason. “She’s maintained that throughout the season. She leads the team in kills and blocks. She is a quiet player who leads through her con-

sistent play. It’s important to have someone like her on the court.”

Reckamp is a freshman setter who was brought up to the varsity recently. “At the Elk Grove tournament we pulled Taylor up and used her as one of our setters,” Mason explained.

“She’s stepped up and has risen to the occasion. We don’t miss a beat with her. She’s young, but I’m impressed with what she is doing right now.”

Willowbrook opened Class 4A postseason action earlier this week

against Glenbard North. Willowbrook is the No. 17 seed in the section, while Glenbard is the No. 16 seed.

The winner was to face Downers Grove North this past Tuesday for a spot in the regional championship.
