GreenMan presents ‘Spooky Stories and Songs of the Season’ GreenMan Theatre presents their annual event “Spooky Stories and Songs of the Season,” which offers stories and songs developed by participants in a storytelling class taught by Carolyn Thomas-Davidoff. Performances are Friday and Saturday, October 19-20.

Several genres of stories may be offered, such as classic tales that come out of the oral tradition to become polished by time, literary tales written by a specific author, personal tales, and urban legends. “Spooky Stories and Songs of the Season” is presented in two sets with an intermission. The program is recommended for adults and children ages 7 and older.

About the stories, storytellers The storytellers joining Thomas-Davidoff in the production are, from Elmhurst, Cassy Beach, Marilyn Connolly, Mary Proska, Joe Schram, and Steven Soria. Also in the production are Bobette Arnett, Julie Brandon, Pat Cooley, Debbie Proska and Alma Read.

Thomas-Davidoff worked with each of them closely in her storytelling class and through the rehearsal process, developing the production.

“I help the tellers find a story that speaks to them,” she said. “Some of them can find a story easily, and some find it harder.”

The storytellers can pursue stories that end well or not so well. This freedom of choice allows the storytellers

to gain a sense of ownership of their story. Thomas-Davidoff stressed that the storytellers shouldn’t be concerned with memorizing their stories but rather just tell them the best way they can through visualizing the details and including them in their stories one detail at a time.

“My mental image for it is that it’s like fingering a string of rosary beads with your mind; you go from bead to bead until you’re done,” she said.

Some of the stories being told are: “Skeleton Woman,” a tale from the far north, “John Tangle and the Witch Cat,” a southeastern American story, “The Gruesome Test,” from Japan.

Also included in the program are “The Babysitter,” “The Seamstress in the Graveyard,” “Next of Kin,” and “La Llorona,” The Weeping Woman story from Mexico and the southwestern United States.

Performance details Performances of “Spooky Stories and Songs of the Season” will be held in GreenMan’s performance space at 232 S. York inside First United Methodist Church. There will be two performances only. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on both evenings.

The Lincoln-Douglas Debates are among the most important events in the United State’s history.

The seven debates were conducted throughout Illinois in the summer and fall of 1858.

Not only significant in their own time, the debates have since been recognized as an ultimate example of our political process - which has continued throughout the centuries as most office seekers nationwide debate each other every campaign season.

Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were respectively the Democratic and Republican party candidates for the U.S. Senate. The primary question these men discussed was whether slavery should be extended into the nation’s territories.

Lincoln was not an abolitionist, but he loathed slavery and looked forward to a time when it would disappear. He also maintained that it should be forbidden from being established in new states that desired to join the Union.

Douglas defended the concept of “Popular Sovereignty,” whereby the people who resided in western territories should have the right to decide if slavery would be allowed.

The slavery question was so important then that no other political issue was raised by either candidate during the debates.

Public oratory was popular in the 19th century; both candidates often used harsh language and outspoken mud-slinging to characterize each other. People attending these contests also shouted out derogatory comments and catcalls toward both men.

Spectators came from every part of Illinois to hear the speakers and newspapers throughout the country published detailed accounts.

The first debate, in Ottawa, was held on a blisteringly hot day in the third week of August. Most historians agree Douglas put Lincoln on the defensive; consequently, the “Little Giant” appeared to be the winner.

However, at the second contest in Freeport, Douglas was put on the de-

fensive. Lincoln asked Douglas how he could reconcile his “Popular Sovereignty” stance with the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision, which ruled that slaveholders had the right to introduce slavery into the territories.

If Douglas responded that he supported the Dred Scott decision he would please Southerners, but if he stood by his “Popular Sovereignty” position, most Southerners would never forgive him.

His reply that day has since been dubbed the “Freeport Doctrine.”

Douglas responded to Lincoln’s query by saying the people who settled a territory would determine whether or not slavery could exist there. Put back on his heels, he hoped his answer would satisfy all parties, but it failed.

The third debate, in mid-September in downstate Jonesboro, was poorly attended. In southern Illinois,

slavery was popular with many citizens. Lincoln finally came out more forcefully in Jonesboro, but he faced a hostile crowd and was characterized

by Douglas as a radical. This debate is considered by most scholars a somewhat inglorious affair. The fourth debate, in Charleston, was on neutral ground for both men and is remembered as a stalemate.

On a chilly day at Knox College’s Old Main in Galesburg, the fifth debate on Oct. 7 drew more spectators than any of the other six contests. Lincoln scholars are nearly unanimous in describing this debate as the one where Lincoln found his legs, displaying a confidence he had not shown before.

Lincoln knew Galesburg was an abolitionist town, known for harboring fugitives on the Underground Railroad. Standing erect and self-assured on a stage above the crowd, Lincoln spoke for the first time at length about the immorality of slavery.

“I confess myself as belonging to that class in the country that contemplates slavery as a moral, social and political evil,” he said. Paraphrasing Henry Clay, he accused Douglas of “blowing out the moral lights around us.”

Lincoln biographer Benjamin Thomas described the Galesburg contest as the turning point for Lincoln. One Boston newspaper reporter described Lincoln as “eloquent and bold.” Lincoln was so successful emphasizing this moral theme in Galesburg that he repeated it at the sixth debate in Quincy.

Douglas, often a heavy drinker, was described as “tight” and spoke slowly, hammering home his contention that decisions about slavery should be left to local and state governments. In the final debate, at Alton, which was a rehashing of the previous points, Douglas, his voice fraying, seemed worn down. Polanek named 88’s Best at Willowbrook for September Maxwell Polanek has been named as Willowbrook’s September recipient of 88’s Best recognition for his outstanding academic accomplishments. Polanek, a senior, was recognized during the Sept. 24 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

As a student, Polanek consistently pursues the most rigorous courses available at WB. At the conclusion of his high school career, he will have completed 12 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses, as well as a multitude of honors courses. As a result of his academic success, Polanek has been recognized as a Semifinalist in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program and as an AP Scholar with Distinction and has been named to the Distinction Honor Roll each semester of his high school career. He also earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36 (which is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school), was recognized with the Outstanding Freshman Award and is an inductee of Civitas (WB’s Social Studies Honor Society) and National Honor Society.

Beyond the classroom, Polanek further demonstrates his skills and talents in a variety of areas. He is a member of Math Team, Science Olympiad and Model United Nations.

He also has participated on the wrestling and cross-country teams and serves as a Youth Equity Stewardship (YES!) series ambassador, promoting and supporting an inclusive and accepting learning environment for all students. Outside of WB, Polanek plays the piano and competes in fencing and hockey.

“I am truly excited to have had the opportunity to work with Polanek, and I can honestly say he will continue to be successful in his future endeavors,” said Brian Chelmecki, Math Department Head. “He also will share his success with his peers along the way, as he consistently raises the level of those around

him by asking thought-provoking questions, enlisting participation of others and demonstrating leadership skills among his peers.”

Science teacher Jim Kedvesh agreed.

“Polanek has demonstrated a level of understanding that is lightning fast and also very thorough,” he said. “He is able to explain his ideas well and also is incredibly respectful and polite in class. I already see him as a quiet class leader in the way his peers might wait to respond and then defer to his answer.”

Social studies teacher Maritza Francisco said Polanek’s love of learning is what makes him stand out.

“Polanek is an amazing young man,” Francisco said. “He is sensitive, empathetic and intuitive to people and situations around him.

He has a thirst to learn and pursues his interests with passion. I had the pleasure of getting to know him his freshman year, and he continues to impress me with his aptitude and intellect.”

Polanek plans to apply to University of Wisconsin–Madison, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), University of Michigan, University of Minnesota and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where he plans to pursue a degree in chemical engineering.

Following the shooting, Morris fled the scene. An investigation into the shooting led authorities to Morris, who was apprehended on Dec. 5 at a bus station in Chicago as he attempted to board a bus bound for Florida.

Morris appeared in Bond Court on December 7, 2015 where bond was set at $3 million with 10% to apply.

He has remained in custody since that time. The victim has since recovered from his injuries.

“This morning, Mr. Morris learned that he will pay a heavy price for his decision to open fire at a crowded store during the busiest shopping season of the year,” Berlin said.

“Thankfully, no innocent bystanders were injured or worse, killed, by Mr. Morris’ incredibly dangerous behavior.”

Morris will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. He will receive credit for time already served in custody.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and DuPage County Clerk of the Circuit Court Chris Kachiroubas announced last week that bond has been set for a Naperville man charged with one count of Identity Theft (Class 3 Felony) for allegedly using stolen credit card information to pay Court fines owed by himself and others. Brenton Thurman, 28, of 92 Olesen Drive in Naperville, appeared in Bond Court, where Judge Joshua Dieden set his bond at $100,000 with 10% to apply.

It is alleged that on multiple occasions in March 2018, Thurman made payments to the DuPage County Clerk of the Circuit Court Office using stolen credit card and bank information to pay not only his court fines but also the fines of several others. It is alleged that Thurman took cash payments from these individuals to satisfy their fines/fees but instead, kept the cash and used stolen credit card information to pay the fines/fees.

It is alleged that in total, Thurman paid approximately $6,000 to the

Clerk of the Circuit Court to satisfy those fines along with his own. Thurman’s alleged scheme was uncovered by the Clerk of the Circuit Court Office who contacted the State’s Attorney’s Office to conduct an investigation.

“The behavior alleged against Mr. Thurman is outrageous and, if proven guilty, will not go unpunished,” Berlin said. “In addition to allegedly victimizing several individuals, Mr. Thurman allegedly attempted to defraud our system of justice all while lining his pockets at the expense of others.”

At Thurman’s court hearing this afternoon, Judge Dieden granted the State’s motion requiring Thurman to show that any monies used for bail are not of illegal origin. Thurman’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 29 for arraignment in front of Judge John Kinsella.

Warrior Wellness takes inside look at WB’s PE classes

Willowbrook students have been working hard every day to become more educated with their health and wellness and their accomplishments have been showcased in this month’s edition of Warrior Wellness.

This month’s column highlighted the freshmen and sophomore physical education classes at Willowbrook High School.

Freshmen began the year with fitness testing to determine baseline data regarding their personal fitness levels upon entering high school.

Each student participated in five tests to provide them with information regarding their health-related fitness level.

Those five areas are curl ups, the mile run, the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER), push-ups and the sit and reach. The tests will be repeated at the end of the semester to determine improvement and growth.

Freshmen also cover the five components of health-related fitness when they are in the classroom on Fridays.

They recently completed unit 1, where they learned about the heart muscle, how to take their pulse, the difference between resting heart rate and target heart rate and blood pressure – and they even took their own blood pressure during class.

The first activity was soccer, and we are now moving on to volleyball.

Cullerton recognized for focus on service personnel The United States Department of Defense recently recognized State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) for his leadership in shaping policies that positively impact the lives of service members and families in Illinois.

“I’m honored to receive this prestigious designation for my efforts to better the lives of our military personnel, veterans and their families,” Cullerton said. “Our nation’s heroes have served our great country with honor and respect and have made countless sacrifices to protect our

freedoms. The new laws we passed this year serve as a small token of appreciation for all they do to keep us safe.”

Cullerton served in the Army from 1990 to 1993 as an infantryman. He continues to use his military experience to implement commonsense legislation that makes resources easily accessible for Illinois’ veterans.

The DoD award was signed by Ann G. Johnston, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy, for Cullerton’s “leadership on public

policy changes positively impacting the quality of life of service members and their families residing in Illinois.”

Former newspaper GM charged with theft She allegedly owes nearly $274,000 to company

The former general manager of the company that publishes this newspaper has been charged in a Wisconsin court with bilking more than $270,000 from the firm.

Cynthia R. Jensen, 55, of Kingston, was charged Sept. 25 in Walworth County Circuit Court with seven counts of identity theft for financial gain and two counts of theft

in a business setting of more than $10,000, all as a party to a crime.

An initial appearance in the case is scheduled for Oct. 17 in Elkhorn, Wis. According to the criminal complaint, Jensen, former general manager of Rock Valley Publishing, Southern Lakes Newspapers and Southern Lakes Publishing in Delavan, Wis., still owes the company $273,991 in unauthorized transactions made from the company to her-

Company owners Peter Cruger and John Cruger notified police July 13 that a Town Bank employee made them aware of fraudulent signatures on seven company checks made out to Jensen and her husband Kim Jensen between Nov. 21, 2017, and Jan. 26, 2018, according to the complaint.

The Crugers hired an accountant who verified the company’s finding that online payments from both companies were made into Jensen’s personal account dating to May 2015, according to the complaint. The accountant also verified payments

made from Jensen’s slot-machine gaming business to the company that appeared to be an attempt to pay back some of the funds she took, the complaint states.

The Crugers met with Jensen in February, and she admitted to the transactions but said she had done nothing wrong, considered the transactions a loan and said she had paid it back with interest, according to the complaint.

Another meeting was scheduled with Jensen in March, but that meeting did not occur. The Crugers found Jensen had left the company and left behind her keys and a computer file outlining the money she owed to each company, according to the complaint.

However, the amounts in the file

differed from the amounts Jensen admitted owing the company in February, the complaint states. The file indicated Jensen owed Southern Lakes Publishing $99,982 and Rock Valley Publishing $16,504, according to the complaint.

Jensen sent a message to the Crugers a short time later stating she would send a check for $99,982 if they would agree the money she took from the company was a loan. The Crugers did not respond to the message because the transactions were not authorized as a loan, however, Jensen sent a check for $99,982.

An internal audit of the companies showed Jensen still owes Southern Lakes Publishing $243,078 and Rock Valley Publishing $30,913, according to the complaint.

County Committee accepting applications for Water Quality Grant

The DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee voted last week to begin accepting grant proposals for projects aimed at improving the quality of the County’s waterbodies.

In its 20th year, the Water Quality Improvement Program (WQIP) grant awards funding for projects exhibiting a regional water quality benefit, including restoration and green infrastructure projects.

“This is such a successful program because we’re leveraging outside funds – from federal, state and local sources - for projects that provide countywide benefits,” said

DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee Chairman Jim Zay. “Last year alone, we received applications for projects totaling nearly $6 million.”

Under the program, organizations and individuals may apply for reimbursement of up to 25 percent of construction costs for portions of projects that improve water quality.

During the grant’s tenure, DuPage County has awarded more than $3.3 million to 56 projects such as permeable paver parking lots, green roofs and native vegetation.

“The amount of projects this program has assisted in is becoming

increasingly noticeable in our local communities,” added Zay. “Not only do they look great, but they’re improving the health of local ecosystems and reducing localized flooding.”

This year, DuPage County also updated the WQIP grant webpage to include past projects and common water quality practices, as well as guidance on applying for the WQIP grant.

ACS reminds October is Breast Cancer Awareness month

As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, the American Cancer Society (ACS) says remarkable progress against the disease should not obscure the significant challenges remaining.

The Facts: Thanks to largely stable incidence rates, improved treatment, as well as earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, a woman’s

risk of dying of breast cancer dropped 39 percent between the late 1980s and 2015, translating into more than 300,000 breast cancer deaths avoided during that time.

Despite that progress, there’s much more to be done. Breast cancer is still the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, second only to lung cancer. There is still a large racial gap in mortality, with African-American women having higher

death rates compared to whites, even as incidence rates are similar.

The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2018 are: • About 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.

• About 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earli• About 40,920 women will die est form of breast cancer). from breast cancer.

• While black and white women get breast cancer at roughly the same rate, the mortality rate is 42% higher among black women than white women.

At this time, there are more than 3.1 million people with a history of breast cancer in the United States.

(This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.)

Risk factors: • Numerous studies have confirmed that alcohol consumption increases the risk of breast cancer in women by about 7%-10% for each one drink of alcohol consumed per day on average. Women who have 2-3 alcoholic drinks per day have a 20 percent higher risk of breast cancer compared to non-drinkers.

• Obesity increases the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. Risk is about 1.5 times higher in overweight women and about 2 times higher in obese women than in lean women.

• Growing evidence suggests that women who get regular physical ac-

tivity have a 10%-25% lower risk of breast cancer compared to women who are inactive, with stronger evidence for postmenopausal than pre-menopausal women • Limited but accumulating research indicates that smoking may slightly increase breast cancer risk, particularly long-term, heavy smoking and among women who start smoking before their first pregnancy.

Addison Trail girls volleyball team readying for playoffs Blazers prepare to tackle tough final part of regularseason schedule

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team will be plenty prepared when it opens action in its own Class 4A regional.

The Blazers were scheduled to play three contests before opening regional play against Oak Park Fenwick, a No. 1 sectional seed, Glenbard West, a No. 3 sectional seed, and Wheaton-Warrenville South, a No. 5 sectional seed.

“We’re heading into a stretch where we are playing the toughest

teams in October,” said Addison Trail coach Dan Styler. “We’re more so looking at the process of continuing to compete and get better on our side of the net. We are going to be tested and that will only help us get better heading into the playoffs at the end of the month.”

Addison Trail was 11-10 overall and 3-2 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play through late last week with only Morton left on the conference slate (played earlier this week). Morton is then followed by contests against Glenbard West, Fenwick (senior night at AT) and Wheaton-Warrenville South.

“Our kids are starting to emerge in the sense of having a more balanced offense,” said Styler. “We

Football The Willowbrook football team’s domination of its regular-season schedule continued in Week 7 where the Warriors were 42-0 winners at home against Morton in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action.

Willowbrook improved to 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in WSC Gold play. The Warriors, the defending conference champions, remain atop the loop with two games to play.

The Warriors finish the regular season on the road at Proviso East and at Downers Grove South before very likely returning to play at home in the first week of the state playoffs.

Boys soccer Injuries have taken their toll on the Willowbrook boys soccer team this season.

“We have had season-ending injuries to three out of four of our defensive starters this season,” said Willowbrook coach Ed DeLaCruz.

Willowbrook had a 4-12 overall mark and a 0-5 West Suburban Conference Gold Division mark through late last week.

Willowbrook held its senior night earlier this week. “Our senior captain Mario Giase is currently our most consistent player and has stood out, in particular, with his leadership,” said DeLaCruz.

David Rizzo was leading the team in scoring with five goals and five assists. Rizzo is another senior captain on the team.

Willowbrook played in the Pepsi Showcase event this season and ended up 2-2.

The news continued on the positive side at the recent Class 2A Glenbard East regional where Rattana advanced to the sectional as an individual. She carded a 93, which tied her for third among the individual advancers.

Rattana golfed earlier this week in the Class 2A Conant sectional at Fox Run in Elk Grove Village where berths in the state finals were on the line.

Johnson has 77 and Bielanski had 76.

Pochiecha is leading the team in hitting percentage at .357 and Johnson is at .287. Severino is tops in blocks with 20. Johnson has 18 blocks and Bielanski has 10 blocks.

Amy Reyes is tops in assists with 227 while Pociecha has 200. Paulina Wirbicki leads the team in digs with 161, while D’Ambrose is second with 141.

“We’ve been telling the kids we’re getting a little more confident playing together as a group and the girls have been thriving in roles and they continue to thrive,” said Styler.

Through late last week Ivan Jaramillo was leading the team with 13 goals. Branny Salas had seven goals and four assists, while Konrad Madej had four goals.

“We have been playing our best soccer,” said Fenton coach Victor Ruiz. “We started a bit rough, but we finally are playing how we want and we are playing well. The boys have finally started to trust each other.”

Ruiz made a lineup adjustment that has paid dividends. “I think our overall play has gotten better and our line has changed from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2. The boys have responded better to it.”

In fact, Ruiz likes the progress made on both sides of the field. “Both sides of the ball have improved very much with Ivan Jaramillo finding the net and moving our holding midfielder Konrad Madej to the back line and anchoring it. The boys have responded well.

“Ivan finding the net and Konrad organizing the back line and creating offense really has turned the team and the momentum,” said Ruiz.

Ruiz noted key areas the team is working on include getting better at

communicating and finishing teams “early when we can,” he said.

Ruiz noted the team’s second-place conference finish was in line with some goals communicated at the beginning of the season. “One of the goals going into conference play was to win it and if not to finish second, which we did,” he said. “I’m proud of the boys for that. Now moving into the playoffs, the goal is to win regionals and why not sectionals?”

Fenton football The Fenton football team scored an important 31-21 Metro Suburban Conference Red Division win over visiting Ridgewood in Week 7 action.

The win moved the Bison to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Ridgewood now has those identical records.

The win also means Fenton keeps its playoffs hopes very much alive with two weeks to play. The Bison need one win in the final two weeks to become playoff eligible and two wins to earn an automatic berth. Fenton finishes the regular season on the road against Elgin St. Edward and Chicago Christian. St. Edward was 3-3 heading into Week 7 play and leading the MSC Red at 3-0, while Chicago Christian was 4-2 and 1-2 in conference.

Fenton boys golf The Fenton boys golf team had three individuals advance to the sectional round in the Class 2A state playoffs.

At the recent Class 2A Wheaton Academy regional at Pheasant Run in St. Charles, seniors Nik Fischer, Marcus Astorga and Marco Faorone all scooped up individual berths in the sectional.

Fischer shot a 79, while Astorga had an 81 and Faorone finished with an 86.

Fenton finished fourth as a team in the regional with a 334, 11 shots off the third and final team-qualifying position.

The Fenton trio golfed earlier this week in the Class 2A Lemont sectional at Broken Arrow in Lockport where state finals berths were on the line.

The Green Wave’s conference wins have come against Elmwood Park (25-22), Guerin Prep (50-0) and Chicago Christian (21-14).

Fenton lost to Elmwood Park 56-32, beat Guerin 49-12 and will encounter Chicago Christian in Week 9. Last year’s meeting between these teams was a MSC crossover contest, but Fenton has since moved into the Red Division.

Addison Trail boys soccer team playing for conference title Both Blazers and Morton were 5-0 heading into this week’s showdown

Addison Trail put itself in a position to play for all the marbles in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division earlier this week.

With recent wins against Proviso East (4-0) and Downers Grove South (3-0), the Blazers improved to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play.

Addison Trail played Morton earlier this week for the WSC Gold title.

Morton was 5-0 as well heading into

the game.

In those two recent wins against Proviso and Downers South, senior midfielder Alexis Delapaz had two goals and one assist, while senior forward Melvin Mora had one goal and two assists.

Senior goalie Sam Sandoval now has 11 shutouts this season to go with an 86% save percentage and a goalsagainst average of 1.11.

Overall, sophomore forward Anthony Hernandez was leading the team with 10 goals and four assists.

Mora had 14 goals and seven assists, while senior midfielder Julio Acosta had seven goals and seven assists.

Junior midfielder Leo Acosta had six

goals and five assists. “The Acosta brothers are doing well for us,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini.

Delapaz and junior defender Martin Murillo also were cited for strong play. “Alexis has scored goals in back-to-back games and has played with high energy and speed,” said Dini. “Martin has solidified our defense and is a playmaker in the back end of our team.”

Dini likes how his team’s offense continues to evolve while the defense remains in exceptional territory. “Our offense has been putting up two or more goals lately,” he said.

“Our defense is shutting teams out.

We are playing with great pace in

transition and getting the ball in good shooting positions and allowing for easy shots.”

Senior leadership also is in abundance. “Our 11 seniors really are giving us good leadership and have kept our team hungry and with something to prove,” said Dini.

Dini said the team’s shooting gets his vote for being the most improved of late, while transition defense and starting off games well remain key points of emphasis. “Our shooting has really improved this season,” he said. “We spend a lot of practice time on this and really focus on good angles and where to shoot the ball on the field related to scoring percentag-

es. We also have some high-quality players who can make the spectacular shot. That really helps.

“I think we need to improve on transition defense and starting off games. We have had some slow starts this year and we have had to come from behind to win a few times this year.”

Addison Trail was in search of its first conference title in 18 years.

“This is a huge game,” said Dini late last week referring to the Morton contest. “I think we are playing our best soccer of the season right now. If we continue to play with an edge, we can make a nice run in the playoffs.

The Addison Trail boys golf team had two entrants in the Class 3A Mt. Prospect sectional held at Mt. Prospect Golf Club earlier this week.

Senior Blaise Morris and junior Jimmy Cerven both qualified as individuals out of the recent Class 3A Chicago Lane regional held at Hilldale Golf Club in Hoffman Estates.

Morris shot a 77 and finished third among the individual sectional qualifiers, while

Cerven checked in at 86 to finished fourth among the individual qualifiers.

Addison Trail finished sixth as a team with a 370 score.

Willowbrook boys golf The Willowbrook boys golf team took sixth at the recent Class 3A Glenbard East regional held at par-71 Glendale Lakes in Bloomingdale.

The Warriors shot 342 as a team.

Senior Taylor Sarovich is headed to sectionals after shooting an 80. It’s the second year in a row he’s advanced out of

the regional.

Senior Joey Guthrie shot 84 and coach Gary Walker noted he narrowly missed a qualification slot after competing in a finalspot playoff.

Junior Logan Rattana shot 88 and senior Jackson Hathaway rounded out the card with a 90. Also competing for the Warriors were sophomore Andrew Rugg, who shot 95 and junior Utah Keehner who carded a 96.

Deer season brings heightened awareness The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County urges drivers to slow down and stay alert to avoid deer-vehicle collisions this fall, when the animals’ breeding season increases the risk of accidents.

“Deer-vehicle collisions increase dramatically between October and December as deer cross roads and highways more frequently in search of mates,” said district ecologist Brian Kraskiewicz.

“During this fall season, please remember to slow down and stay alert for deer, especially when driving around the perimeters of our preserves or any wooded areas,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

According to State Farm Insurance, Illinois ranked 32nd in the nation for deer-vehicle accidents in

2017. A driver in the state had a 1-in204 chance of having a collision, a drop of 6.1 percent over 2016. Most deer-vehicle accidents in the U.S. occur in November, October and December. But there are ways to lower the risk.

• Reduce your speed and watch for deer on the edge of the road, especially at dawn and dusk. They’re common along woods, fields, fencerows and waterways, but you can encounter them almost anywhere.

• If you see a deer cross safely in front of your car, slow down and expect more to follow. Deer often travel in groups.

• Make note of where you’ve seen deer before.

•Be careful when going around curves or when approaching favored deer crossings.

• Don’t assume that a deer in the road will run off as you approach.

They may bolt or quickly change direction without warning.

• Don’t use your horn unless it looks like you are going to collide with a deer. Distant noise may confuse the deer. Close noise may produce an extra burst of speed from the animal, but there is no way to predict how a deer will respond.

• Heed deer-warning signs. They are placed in areas where deer-auto collisions are likely to occur.

• Do not swerve to avoid deer — it could result in a more severe crash.

Slow to a stop and wait. Flash your headlights to encourage the animals to move.

Rainbow trout season to begin Oct. 20 The fall rainbow trout season will open on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 6 a.m. at three Forest Preserve District of DuPage County lakes: Silver Lake at Blackwell in Warrenville, Pickerel Lake at Pratt’s Wayne Woods in Wayne and Grove Lake at Wood Dale Grove in Wood Dale.

The three lakes will close to all fishing until the season opener to give newly stocked fish time to disperse.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will stock Silver Lake with 3,250 pounds of rainbow trout, and the Forest Preserve District will stock Pickerel Lake with 2,000 pounds and

Grove Lake with 500 pounds.

The forest preserve district does not participate in the state’s catchand-release fly fishing program.

The creel limit for rainbow trout is five trout per day with no length limit.

Creel limits, depth maps and species lists for 30 forest preserve lakes are in the District’s free “Fishing in DuPage County” guide, which is available online or through Visitor Services at 630-933-7248 or forest@dupageforest.org.

All anglers 16 and older who are not legally disabled must carry valid Illinois fishing licenses with inland

trout stamps. Both are available for purchase weekday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Visitor Services at district headquarters, 3S580 Naperville Road, Wheaton, and select local retailers.

“Trout season is something our experienced and aspiring anglers look forward to all year,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “The forest preserve district is happy to provide that opportunity to all of our fishermen.”

“We place a high priority on cyber security in Illinois and many improvements are being achieved to strengthen the state’s defense and build awareness against this growing public safety issue,” said Kirk Lonbom, acting secretary for the Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT). “Illinois is making impressive progress toward the goals detailed in the state’s first cybersecurity strategy.”

The Ready Illinois website at www.Ready.Illinois.gov provides links to information and tips to help people minimize the risk of being a cybercrime victim. Some of those tips include the following: • Configure your computer securely. Use privacy and security settings in your software, email system and web browsers. Regularly update your anti-virus software to identify and thwart new strains of malicious software.

• Keep software and operating systems updated. Install all software updates as soon as they are offered; using the “auto update” setting is the best way to ensure timely updates.

• Use strong passwords. Cybercriminals use automated programs that will try every word in the dictionary in a few minutes. When creating a password, use at least 10 characters, with a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols.

• Be cautious about links and attachments. Even communications you receive that appear to be from friends and family may contain links to malicious sites, so be careful when clicking on links in those messages.

When in doubt, delete it.

Additionally, radio and television spots are airing statewide as part of the Ready Illinois broadcast preparedness campaign, which is aired in cooperation with the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) Public Education Partnership program.

The spots will air on more than 200 Illinois radio stations and more than 30 Illinois television stations.

Elmhurst College bands to perform Fall Concert College welcomes new Symphonic Band Director John Heath

The Elmhurst College Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will host their first concert of the year on Sunday, Oct. 14, beginning at 3 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus.

The concert also will be the first with John Heath, the College’s new director of the Symphonic Band.

The concert will include a number of fall-themed pieces, including Eric Whitacre’s October and Philip Sparke’s Dance Movements. As part of the Bernstein at 100 celebrations taking place all year long across the country, the concert also will feature music by Leonard Bernstein, including “Danzon,” from the ballet Fancy Free; and “Make Our Garden Grow,” from Candide. In addition, Tom Stark, professor of trombone, will join the band for a solo perfor-

mance from Johan de Meij’s T-Bone Concerto.

John Heath received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He went on to direct the Highland (Ill.) High School Band for 11 years, the Batavia High School Band for 22 years, and the Highland Municipal Concert Band as well as the Batavia Community Band, which he founded.

Donations to the Ross Kellan Scholarship Fund will be accepted at the concert. The fund was established to honor Ross Kellan, a widely admired music educator and Elmhurst College faculty member.
