District 88 Board supports access to property tax relief grants As District 88 has previously shared, Illinois recently implemented a school funding law that looks to achieve adequacy and equity in education funding throughout the state.

That Evidence Based Funding law also provides money for a Property Tax Relief Grant. The intent of that

program is to assist communities in Illinois that are experiencing a significant local property tax burden due to limited local property wealth. It’s an opportunity to lower the property tax burden on local taxpayers, with the state replacing a portion of foregone tax revenue with

state funds.

District 88 has applied for this grant on behalf of the property taxpayers of the district and Illinois.

However, the district is concerned there isn’t sufficient funding allocated to fully and effectively implement this program to support

all eligible communities. During its Jan. 14 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education approved submitting a resolution to address concerns regarding the underfunding by the state for property tax relief.

That resolution was sent to State Senators Tom Cullerton and Don

Harmon; State Representatives Deb Conroy, Deanne Mazzochi, Terra Costa Howard and Kathleen Willis; Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker; State Superintendent Dr. Tony Smith; and Peg Agnos, Executive Director of Legislative Education Network of DuPage (LEND).

Cleaning woman accused of stealing jewelry from client’s home DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Wheaton Chief of Police William Murphy announced last week that Joanna Jarosz, 32, of Downers Grove, has been charged with stealing a diamond ring from a client’s home.

On Wednesday, Jan. 16, a $3,000 arrest warrant was issued for Jarosz. This morning she turned herself in to the Wheaton Police Department and was released after posting the necessary $300 or 10%.

On Oct. 7, 2018, a Wheaton resident contacted the Wheaton Police Department to report that a diamond ring had been stolen from her house sometime between Oct. 2 and Oct. 7.

An investigation into the theft led authorities to Jarosz, a cleaning woman who had allegedly cleaned the victim’s house on Oct. 2. It is alleged that Jarosz stole the ring while cleaning the woman’s

house.

“It is alleged that Ms. Jarosz used her position as a cleaning woman to gain access to her victim’s home and once inside stole her victim’s diamond ring,” Berlin said. “While hiring a cleaning service can be a great help and timesaver, people must also remember that they are letting unsupervised people in their home. Protect yourself and your belongings by asking questions before hiring. Ask about work experience, the amount of insurance they carry, if any, and don’t be afraid to ask for references.”

Jarosz has been charged with one count of Residential Burglary, a Class 1 Felony.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 27 in front of Judge Jeffrey MacKay. Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

District 88 offers Strategic Plan update

District 88 is in the process of updating its Strategic Plan to retool and enhance the district’s existing 2010 plan and to ensure the focus remains on accomplishing the district’s mission of working for the continuous improvement of student achievement. From September to November, facilitator Jeff Cohn with Brave Dialogue joined District 88 administrators and met with more than 700 stakeholders – including staff members, parents and guardians, community members and students – to gather their feedback and thoughts with this process.

During the District 88 Board of Education meeting held on Jan. 14, Cohn recapped the time line, goals and initiatives of the Strategic Plan process. The Board also participated in an interactive activity to provide their input on the process and suggested updates to the plan. The District 88 administration will incorporate the recommendations from the Board, set measures for each goal within the updated Strategic Plan and submit it for Board approval in February.

Bond set for volleyball coach accused of child porn possession, video-taping the location. The wiring on the video camera allegedly led to a computer located in the office of Liedtke, a volleyball coach who owns Xcel Athletics which operates at the facility. An inspection of the computer allegedly revealed numerous images of patrons, including minors, as they used the washroom. It is further alleged that Liedtke also possessed images of child pornography on his cellular telephone. Liedtke turned himself in to the Carol Stream Police Department yesterday.

“The allegations against Mr. Liedtke are, in a word, sickening,” Berlin said. “He allegedly violated not only the privacy of patrons at the facility, but also the trust placed in him by the parents of the athletes he trained. The disgusting behavior alleged in this case will be met with the full force of the law.”

County’s HOPE Taskforce holds first meeting Last week, the DuPage County Heroin Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce outlined its framework and means to reduce the number of opioid deaths in DuPage County over the next three years.

At the meeting, the Taskforce agreed to five objectives to address the ongoing public health crisis facing our community.

“Reducing access to opioids and increasing access to treatment is particularly important, considering yesterday’s news from Coroner Dr. Richard Jorgensen that the epidemic continues to have an acute impact on our County,” said HOPE Taskforce co-chair-

man Greg Hart. “While the 2018 overdose death numbers are concerning, we have a dedicated group partners on the HOPE Taskforce doing important work in our community. The HOPE Taskforce is committed to bringing forth new and innovative solutions in the coming months and years that will hopefully make a positive impact for the individuals, families, and DuPage County communities impacted by this epidemic.”

“This is one of the most complex health issues we have ever faced in DuPage County,” said health department executive director Karen Ayala.

“The HOPE Taskforce is committed

to expanding all available resources to get to the root of this epidemic.”

The main objective of the HOPE Taskforce is to coordinate the efforts of the many community partners and strategies needed to address this crisis. On the weekend of the 8th anniversary of an unsolved double homicide, Mayor Nick Caiafa, the Village of Schiller Park and the Schiller Park Police Department have announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the 2011 murders of George Markopoulos and Wendy Bonder.

Early in the morning of January 27, 2011, a three-alarm fire broke out at the Horseshoe Inn located at 9639 West Irving Park Road in Schiller Park.

More than 50 firefighters from 12 departments had responded before the fire was under control. That’s when the body of George Markopoulos, 67, was discovered. Markopoulos owned the bar and lived in a small apartment in back. After an initial investigation, his death was ruled a homicide from cranial cerebral injuries and blunt head trauma.

Several days after the fire, the remains of Wendy Bonder, 61, were located under three feet of burned debris. An autopsy revealed she also

died of cranial cerebral injuries and blunt head trauma and her death was also ruled a homicide.

One year after the tragedy, a candlelight vigil was held at the rebuilt Horseshoe Inn, honoring the memories of Markopoulos and Bonder. In addition to being a longtime small business owner in the community, Markopoulos was well known throughout Schiller Park as a passionate and long-time supporter of community activities.

“The tragic deaths of George and Wendy shook our close-knit community and has not been forgotten,” said Mayor Caiafa. “From day one, our detectives have dedicated themselves to solving this case and I committed to supporting them in those efforts, including with the creation of this reward. We owe it to George, Wendy and their families to find who did this and bring them to justice.”

English discrepancies: How does anyone ever learn it?

The English language is a formidable beast, even for those of us who learned it as our first language.

Language is all about meaning – communication. And sometimes context and inflection can completely change the meaning of a word or phrase. Add to this the overall goofiness of English.

Why is it that bird, heard and word rhyme all the time but love, stove and move do not? Add to this the dove duality – when you see the word does it refer to the bird or the past tense of dive? None of it makes sense and yet I’ve dedicated my career (and life practically) to words and the English language.

The intricacies and subtleties can cause communication gaffes – most often between people who are married. But it can happen with anyone.

It’s a wonder we ever get our message across.

Let’s start at the top, with the word head. Dictionary.com lists 66 entries just for this one word – some of which are rather racy in nature, but I’ll stay away from the R-rated heads.

I try to keep this a PG-13 column.

Still, how many ways can going to the head be interpreted? Are we talking about a line, the class or bathroom? Those are three completely different actions, unless you are standing in line to get into the bathroom before math class. Then you are going to the head in more ways than one.

A racket is an implement used to play tennis or it is a loud and rather disturbing noise, which you do not want to make if you are watching tennis (said in a hushed tenniswatching tone).

We often make things more complicated than they need to be.

When you are patiently waiting for your turn on a theme park ride why is it called a queue when it could be simply Q? All those extra letters. I’ve written plays and am a playwright.

Why not playwrite or playright?

Every time I use the word I have to look it up. No kidding.

There’s a whole list of words that can mean one thing, unless they mean the opposite. They are officially called auto-antonyms, or in layperson terms car-opposites.

Here’s one actual dictionary definition: Egregious: adj. 1.

Outstandingly bad; shocking. 2.

Remarkably good.

I’m not making this up. If you tell someone they are egregious what are you saying, exactly? Exactly.

By definition, a bomb is an explosive device. Unless, of course,

you are referring to the theater (or theatre). Then a bomb is anything but explosive; it is lackluster. A bad thing. Adversely, if someone’s performance is the bomb, it is inspired and exceedingly good.

A bombshell is an overwhelming surprise or disappointment (bad thing), unless it is an extremely attractive woman (good thing).

For all of you who are keeping track of the inconsistencies, bomb does not rhyme with tomb or comb.

But we already knew that.

When you strike something, you hit it. Unless you are playing baseball, where a strike means you didn’t hit anything.

Often voice tone lets us know what meaning we intend.

The word bad is obviously bad as in not good. Unless, of course, it is good. In that case, bad is said with attitude to convey the goodness of the badness. “Look at that baaaad convertible!”

Equally opposite is perfect, which is wonderful, superb and flawless unless it is spoken with a certain under-your-breath intonation that makes it anything but wonderful. “I got an F on my test. Perfect.” The same goes for great, which is usually great unless it is ungreat (or maybe ingrate – I can never keep it straight).

In this case it is used in a sentence to describe something negative, “Oh great, another flat tire.”

Right is always right, unless it is wrong, which would not be right but logically left. I think.

And left is just as confusing. If someone left the building, they are gone. If three cookies are left on the plate they remain on the plate and are far from gone. Yet. But they will be soon. I think I’ve confused myself enough for one day and am in need of a snack. There are those three cookies waiting, after all. They’ll be great! (As in positive regarding taste or as negative for my diet.)

Take your pick.

Cullerton, Pritzker focus on veterans homes State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is praising Gov. JB Pritzker’s move to protect Illinois’ veterans.

On Friday, Jan. 18, Pritzker issued an executive order to examine and get to the bottom of the Legionnaires’ crisis in the state’s veterans homes.

Pritzker’s administration is directing the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs to issue a report in 120 days that will provide a comprehensive review of weaknesses, strengths and opportunities for improvement of policies, protocols and procedures related to ensuring the health and safety of residents and employees at Illinois veterans homes.

From Feb. 7 to 9, Willowbrook will present its winter play, “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani. Curtain times are 7 p.m. each evening in the Willowbrook auditorium.

The play features nine different storylines that show the various stages and types of love – from new love, to struggling relationships, to discovering feelings where you didn’t think they existed to healing a broken heart. The stories all take place on a winter night in the fictional town of Almost, Maine and follow the town’s residents as they discover the complexity of human emotion and various aspects of love and loss.

“What’s so special about this play is it uses metaphors to depict love,” said Maggie Kelly, Co-Director of the play with Kimberly Jackson-Petrella. “It’s filled with magical realism, and our hope is audience members will relate to at least one storyline that resonates with them and

have an emotional response.”

Assistant Directors and Willowbrook seniors Sydney Keehner and Claire Mitchell said “Almost, Maine” is unique in that it encompasses multiple genres of theatre.

“The underlying message of the play is to take a look at the relationships in your life and appreciate your loved ones,” Keehner said. “Just because someone loves you in a way that’s different than what you want or expect, that doesn’t mean they’re not loving you with all their heart.”

Tickets, available at the door, are $7 for adults; $5 for students and children older than 12 years old (children 12 years old and younger, accompanied by an adult, are admitted free); $3 with an Activity Pass; and are free with a District 88 Senior Gold Card. Addison Trail wrestling team wins West Suburban Conference Gold title Juarez and Matthews earn top-six finishes at prestigious Dvorak tournament

The Addison Trail wrestling team is back on top of the West Suburban Conference Gold Division mountain.

The Blazers defeated Morton recently by a 45-24 count to finish the WSC Gold season with a perfect 6-0 mark, giving it the conference title. The WSC does not have a conference wrestling tournament.

It is Addison Trail’s first WSC Gold wrestling title since it won three in a row ending in 2015.

“We have a lot of experience,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Serio. “We

are young, but we have kids who have been wrestling for a while. A lot of kids on the team come through our kids’ club (Headlock Wrestling Academy).

So we have a lot of experience and off-season experience. We have the experience and these guys work hard and have bought in.”

Serio noted Addison Trail has just three seniors in its 14 weight classes. “We only have three seniors, but we have a lot of experience,” he said.

“From top to bottom, every one of these kids can wrestle. It’s been a fun year.”

Addison Trail was 16-4 overall in duals and also has enjoyed success in tournaments. The Blazers finished third at Geneva, fifth at Batavia and 19th at the prestigious Dvorak tournament.

The Willowbrook boys basketball team found itself 10-9 overall and 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action through late last week.

In recent play, the Warriors dropped WSC Gold games to Proviso East and Downers Grove South.

“We have been up and down lately,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins. “Hopefully, we are about to hit our stride before the playoffs here.”

Perkins said the team’s defense has been a key bright spot of late.

“Our defense has been consistent for the most part,” he said. “We have a good defensive unit. A lot of our offense is set up by our defense.”

Willowbrook has been without veteran standout Matas Masys since Christmas. “He’s a 1,000-point scorer and a four-year varsity player for us,” said Perkins. “With him, we are a different team. But other guys have stepped up for the most part.”

One of them is Everett Stubblefield III, who is the team’s leading scorer. “Everett has been doing the bulk of the load and we’ve had other guys step up,” said Perkins. “He’s leading us in scoring and he’s our best playmaker right now. He came up as a sophomore midway through the season and averaged double digits. This year, he’s over 20 points a game. It’s been a natural progression with Everett and now the offense runs through him. We like to get the ball in his hands.”

Perkins also cited strong play of late from Levi Bentsen, along with Scotty and Sam Tumilty.

“It’s usually someone different every game.” He said.

Willowbrook once again has tackled a schedule filled with some of the top teams around this season through those first 19 games.

“I feel like we’ve played a brutal schedule this year,” said Perkins.

“We’ve played good competition and some of the top teams in the state. In Sterling at the Martin Luther King shootout, we beat Oswego East, which was ranked 17th, and we lost to Maine South, so those are two quality opponents. The competition is going to prepare us for what lies ahead once we get into the playoffs. At the Christmas tournament at Hinsdale Central, I thought that was a great tournament. We lost to Marian Catholic, which was ranked No. 4, by four points. Lincoln Park was ranked 20th and we lost to them by four points. We play a lot of tough teams. Hopefully it prepares us for what we could see once it gets to do-or-die time in the playoffs. We’ve already faced the tough competition. We’re used to it and we know how to handle ourselves in those situations.”

“We have a tough draw with Oak Park-River Forest,” said Serio in assessing the team landscape at the regional. “It would be nice to get another

eight or 10 guys out to the sectional.”

Addison Trail has returning state qualifiers in Juarez, Matthews and Brian Reyes.

“We have kids who can do it, no question,” said Serio.

Serio also has been impressed with junior 113-pounder Adam Skrzpek.

“Adam has been pretty tough,” he said.

“Xavier Sierra at 160, Giulian Frontier, a junior, at 170 and Nick Skamra at 182 also have been wrestling well. It should be interesting.”

Juarez was 27-6 at 106 pounds through late last week. Skrzpek, a junior, was 27-6 at 113. Sophomore John Asiuras was 23-10 at 120. Matthews was 29-6 at 132. Reyes, a senior, was 24-9 at 138. Eric Reed, a sophomore, was 21-14 at 152. Frontier, a junior, was 16-16 at 160. Sierra was 24-12 at 160, while Skamra was 26-9 at 182.

“This year has flown by,” said Serio.

“The guys have wrestled well and regionals are here already. I can’t believe it.”

The Fenton girls basketball team went 3-1 at its own inaugural Martin Luther King tournament recently.

In the eight-team event, the Bison defeated Thornridge 61-60, Chicago Academy 56-14 and TF North 61-29.

Fenton’s only defeat was a 63-30 loss to tournament champion Round Lake.

In the Thornridge game, Isa Lozada’s layup at the buzzer in overtime won it for the Bison.

“We had to go the length of the floor in 3.2 seconds for the win,” explained Fenton coach Dave Mello. “We inbounded to half-court and called time.

We then ran a play from half-court and it resulted in Isa beating the buzzer.

Overall, the tournament was a great success despite the challenging weather.”

Fenton then dropped a 63-57 Metro Suburban Conference Red Division game to conference-leader Aurora Christian. “We fell behind by 10 early in the fourth quarter only to rally and tie the game late before Aurora Christian hit a shot and some free throws to hold us off. We ended playing two excellent games with them.”

The Bison also dropped a 67-50 MSC Red game to Chicago Christian at home on Box Out Cancer night that also included the boys basketball team playing.

“The game really took a back seat to the overall experience of the night,” said Mello. “The entire night was for a great cause.”

Fenton was 14-14 overall and 6-6 in MSC Red play through late last week.

Mello cited recent strong play from

the likes of sophomores Lisette Rodriguez and Daisy Cossio. “Lisette has really been strong inside and has really developed some very good post moves,” he said. “She also is running the floor hard and causing a lot of problems at the top of our defense.

“Daisy missed about six weeks with an injury and we worked her back slowly. Against Aurora Christian, she had her best game of the season. She played with no fear and competed at a high level. She also contributed a couple really strong drives to the basket. It is great that we have these two girls for two more seasons.”

The Bison have three regular-season games left prior to regional play starting. Fenton was scheduled to play Elmwood Park earlier this week before returning to action next week with games against Maine East and senior night against Wheaton Academy.

The Willowbrook girls bowling team finished West Suburban Conference play with a perfect 8-0 mark.

The Warriors finished 12-1 overall in dual matches.

Willowbrook scored a recent 3,0482,551 WSC win against Downers Grove North. Holly Helsper led all bowlers with a 563, which included high games of 212 and 193.

The Warriors also were 3,580-3,237 non-conference winners against Metea Valley at Fox Bowl in Wheaton.

“This was our best score of the season,” Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen pointed out. “We had four girls who all shot over a 600 series for three games.”

Helsper led all scorers with a 687 series with games of 234, 233 and 220. Katie Pettinger added a 631 with high games of 245 and 218. Makaylah Jones had a 623 rolling games of 225, 216 and 182. Paula Williams finished with a 620 series with games of 223, 222 and 175.

a 185 average, while Pettinger is right there with her at 182.

“Right now, our team is working hard on lane play,” said Allen. “We are working on how to move and when to move when the lane is breaking down.

In the late games, we are working on spare shooting and creating different angles into the pocket in order to strike, spare and fill frames. I have been really challenging them and they all have stepped up.”

Allen said the team’s success this year is because of a focus on teamwork. “Our entire varsity team has stepped up this season,” he said. “Our team is designed around every player to do their part. The best thing about our team is you never know who is going to have the high game every game.

I am very lucky to have a group that is all so talented.”

Willowbrook had events remaining at Leyden (at Stardust in Addison) and the WSC tournament prior to the start of the postseason.

“We are starting to bowl our best and are getting focused for the state competition,” said Allen.

Through late last week, Zach Seymore was leading the team with a 29-6 record. Brockie had a 28-8 mark, while Scheelk was 24-11 and Gabe Yu was 20-14.

“The guys are starting to wrestle tougher and are being stingy,” said Ortiz. “Anything they give up, their opponents are earning. We’re wrestling tougher and coming together as a team. The kids are starting to buy in and understand what hard work is as well as its benefits.”

The Fenton wrestling team completed its regular season with wins against Guerin Prep (66-3), Elmwood Park (44-36), Bremen (5310) and Chicago De La Salle (5125).

Fenton finished the regular season at 16-8 overall and 9-1 in Metro Suburban Conference action, with its only loss coming to defending state-champion Aurora Christian.

The Fenton boys swimming team recently tied for first at the recent Illinois Math and Science Academy invitational in Aurora.

Fenton’s JV team finished second in the JV IMSA invite.

The Bison tied with IMSA for the top spot on the varsity level. IMSA had beaten Fenton 94-76 in a dual meet earlier in the season.

At IMSA, Nik Fischer, Conrad Oberski and Lucas Feddersen each had first-place swims. Those three and Matt Janovsky also won the 200 free relay.
