The ongoing issue of Lufkin Pool just got extended at least another 12 weeks.

The Board of Trustees approved an advisory referendum question to be placed on the April 2, 2019 ballot asking Villa Park voters if they would support raising taxes to fund repairs of Lufkin.

The vote was not unanimous, as Trustees Don Kase and David Cilella chose not to join Trustees Robert Wagner, Chris Aiello, Cheryl Tucker, Nick Cuzzone and Village President Al Bulthuis in approving the ballot question.

“This is just an advisory referendum,” Trustee Wagner noted. “The future Board can still choose what they want. Think of this question as a poll of what Villa Park residents want to do with Lufkin.”

The six-plus decade old pool at 1150 S. Ardmore Ave. was shut down in February 2017. Despite a vigorous effort by The “Save Lufkin Pool” group that lobbied the Village to dip into reserve funds to repair the popular summer recreation spot, the Board at the time declined to funnel money into repairs.

“It can’t be saved,” said Trustee Don Kase at the time, “It is time to close Lufkin and work toward funding a new swim facility.”

Kase was just as leery of the advisory question, commenting that he felt the wording “didn’t tell me as a taxpayer what I would be getting for my money.”

This past summer, Lufkin pool was closed for the first swim season

since it was built, but the decision to demolish the pool and pool house was delayed until November to give interested residents a chance to come up with a solution to fund repairs.

“I’m here representing the Save Lufkin Pool group,” said resident Charles Pickerell in his address to the Board during the Monday, Dec. 17 meeting at Village Hall. “We are ecstatic that the Board may put this question to the voters, but we are concerned with the amount.”

The proposed non-binding advisory ballot question as originally discussed read: ‘Do you support the Village of Villa Park, Illinois, spending up to $1,000,000 in new property taxes to fund repairs to Lufkin Pool which would allow the Village to safely reopen the pool for three to five years?”

In a press release, the Save Lufkin Pool group noted they believe using the figure of ‘up to’ $1 million is unnecessary, “since the highest estimate that had been discussed was $500,000” and that they had never advocated raising property taxes to fix Lufkin.

Village President Al Bulthuis commented during the meeting that the figure of $1 million was derived from a Williams Architects 2013 assessment of required repairs to Lufkin, which encompasses things like a new liner, filtration equipment and deck repairs.

focused on the development of housing that serves all demographics in DuPage County, is responsible for this priority.

• Behavioral Health…The coalitions linked to this priority are Prevention Leadership Team (PLT), Behavioral Health Collaborative (BHC), and the Heroin/Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce. PLT is a coalition that aims to prevent substance use and addiction among youth; the BHC works to improve the ways that people with mental health issues interact with the justice system; HOPE Taskforce is a group of stakeholders working to combat the opioid epidemic in DuPage County.

On Friday, Dec. 14, the Impact DuPage Steering Committee voted to adopt the 2019-21 Action Plan.

Starting Jan. 1, 2019, Illinois residents will have a faster method to speed up the government consolidation process, according to State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park).

The new law will accomplish this by decreasing the waiting period from 150 to 60 days after the first mandated county audit is performed.

“Consolidating government the right way will help lower property taxes for DuPage County residents,” Cullerton said. “Speeding up the process will help residents experience government savings sooner rather than later.”

Previously, it could take more than two and a half years for some Illinois counties to consolidate local government entities.

In 2013, Cullerton worked with DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin to implement an effective government consolidation model to eliminate redundant forms of government. Last year, Cullerton continued to advance his mission of making sure government is working in tune with the needs of Illinois’ residents.

“Government should change to fit the needs of the people,” Cullerton said. “Outdated and ineffective government entities are a blatant disservice to the public. This commonsense change will ensure government works more efficiently and effectively to serve the citizens of Illinois.”

When the original DuPage pilot program was created in 2013, Cullerton agreed to a number of provisions, including a 150-day waiting period after the first audit was performed. House Bill 5777 reduces that waiting period from 150 to 60 days to speed up the process and help counties receive results more promptly.

“DuPage County is proof government consolidation works,” Cullerton said. “Saving vital taxpayer money while working toward effective government is a win for everyone involved.”

District 88 is joining the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in the seventh statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions, referred to as the Illinois 5Essentials Survey.

Through Feb. 15, 2019, teachers, students and parents/guardians are able to complete this research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s learning environment and have a voice in improving their schools. The principals and superintendent will receive their 5Essentials Reports in April 2019, and survey results will be posted on the 5Essentials reporting site in spring 2019 and on the 2019 Illinois Report Card.

Willowbrook girls basketball team off to fine start Warriors were 11-4 heading into holidays

The Willowbrook girls basketball has an interesting mix to it, as coach Terry Harrell pointed out recently.

And that roster mix has generated plenty of positive returns thus far.

Through its first 16 games, Willowbrook was 11-4 overall and was tied atop the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 5-1 mark heading into the holidays.

“So far, things are going pretty well,” said Harrell. “The upside is we are winning most of the games we should. The girls are playing hard.

It’s a different mix this season. We have three sophomores on the team who are giving us some additional

ball-handling skills that were sorely needed. We have a lot of juniors as well. We’ve grown up and have decided to become better basketball players which is a great thing. That combination gives us a good group that has a lot of depth. We are pretty solid to nine players. A lot of girls have done a lot of things to keep us in games. If someone is struggling on a given night we try someone else and see what they have. We have come a long way.”

Kaitlyn McCann has led the Warriors in scoring in many of the games. “But the second and third scorers change quite a bit,” said Harrell. “It’s a combination of different people. That makes us a team that is difficult to get rid of. Someone different gets hot and that carries the team offensively on a given night.

That helps a lot.”

Harrell also has been pleased with how his team has performed defensively. “Our defense is very good,” he said. “We play real solid man-toman defense. We take opportunities away from the other team. We have the ability to take away their extra scorer. That second or third scorer we have denied opportunities to score. We pressure people and turn a lot of people over. We’re averaging about 12 steals a game and that gets us additional shots and takes away shots from the other team. We’re pretty small, but we are pretty fast.

Turning people over is a piece of it.”

One of those sophomores who is playing well is Stephanie Dasbach.

“Stephanie is about 6-1,” said Harrell. “She’s added a shot-blocking ability for us. That helps stabilize our

The Fenton girls gymnastics team placed sixth at the recent Winter Tumbleland event hosted by Addison Trail.

Fenton finished with a score of 108.700 and scored highest as a team on the vault with a 31.900 output.

On the vault, Fenton’s Emily Trzhielewski took sixth with an 8.800 score. Nicole Maciulewicz tied for 16th with an 8.250. Olivia Baran finished with a 7.500.

On uneven parallel bars, Baran, a freshman, was 25th with score of 6.150. Trzhielewski was 26th at 5.900.

Trzhielewski took 13th on the balance beam with a 7.500. Maciulewicz was 20th on beam at 6.900.

Baran was 26that 6.350.

Trzhielewski tied for 12th on floor exercise at 8.200. Maciulewicz tied for 22nd on floor at 7.100.

Baran finished 27th in the event.

Fenton football Fenton quarterback Kyle Cacioppo was named to the roster of the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association 2019 Shrine Game.

Cacioppo was one of three quarterbacks selected for the East team.

The 6-2, 185-pound Cacioppo will play in the 44th incarnation of the game, which takes place June 15 at 11 a.m., at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.

Fenton also announced its football awards for the 2018 season. Tyshawn Brooks was the recipient of the Chiodo Award, while Nickolas Benn won the Censotti Award.

Four-year varsity participants included Jeffrey Andrews, Ceasr Bermudez, Cacioppo, James Deckert, Miguel Garcia, Ivan Lozada, Giovanni Mendoza and Louis Rago.

Metro Suburban Conference all-academic recipients included Austin Adkins, Andrews, Cacioppo, Fabian Calvillo, Paul Garcia, Kevin Gonzalez, Jacob Jarmolinski, Angelo Mendoza, Eric Moreno, Josue Rivas and Ricardo Saucedo.

Cacioppo was named the team’s offensive player of the year. He threw for 1,080 yards, completed 56 percent of his pass attempts, passed for 13 touchdowns and ran for seven touchdowns.

Andrews was named the defensive player of the year after registering 39 solo tackles, 21 assisted tackles, 14 tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks.

Andrews, Cacioppo, Julian Giles and Deckert were named to the all-MSC Red Division Team.

Andrews and Cacioppo were Illinois High School Coaches Association all-state academic honorees.

And Andrews won the Coach Bob Ciancio Leadership and Dedication Award that recognizes outstanding leadership and dedication exhibited by a Fenton High School football player. Ciancio coached Fenton from 1981 to 1997 and led the 1984 Bison football team to the state semifinals and an 11-1 record.

Fenton girls basketball The Fenton girls basketball team opened play in the DePaul College Prep/Northside tournament before the holidays with a 65-54 loss to Chicago Lincoln Park.

The loss put Fenton at 8-7 overall.

Fenton boys swimming The Fenton boys swimming team recorded a recent 123-62 win against Morris High School. Nik Fischer, Conrad Oberski and Matt Janovsky each won two individual events to lead the way for the Bison.

Earlier, the Bison lost 94-76 to Illinois Math and Science Academy.

Sophomore Grace Tumilty also is excelling in her role at the point guard position. “Grace is our starting point guard and has played extremely well,” said Harrell. “She hasn’t let the pressure get to her. She gets us into our offense and is a great on-ball defender. She helped a lot.”

Annmarie Knudston has provided a spark off the bench, as has Cecilia Lizasuain. “Annmarie plays the ‘2’ and the ‘1’. She’s also a good onball defender,” said Harrell. “Cecilia has come off the bench and has done a great job. She’s active and has helped us with some great punch off the bench.”

Willowbrook opened plenty eyes when it scored a win in Maywood against perennial conference power Proviso East earlier in the season.

“Not a lot of people do that,” said Harrell. “It wasn’t like we played the perfect game. We played really well for 2 ½ quarters. We controlled the tempo and didn’t allow them to turn us over. We were able to play at our pace. They made a run in the fourth quarter, but we held them off. At the time we played Proviso, it was our eighth game in 11 days. I thought to myself, ‘Wow. It’s a good thing these kids are young.’ They did very well.”

Willowbrook’s lone Gold Division loss has been to Downers Grove South. “That was a game we should have won,” said Harrell. “We were up 13 points with five minutes to go in the game. We let the pace of the game get away from us. We had controlled the game. They had one girl who had a heck of a fourth quarter against us. We will see them in early January. We play Downers South and Proviso again in January and the three of us are tied at 5-1. We beat Proviso, Proviso beat Downers and Downers beat us.”

Harrell is looking forward to seeing how the second half of the season plays out. “Everyone on the team has played very well in spots,” he said.

“Of the games we have lost, we had leads going into the fourth quarter in three of the four. We were leading with four minutes left against Stevenson and lost by four. We had the lead in the last seconds against Lockport and we lost to Downers.

The only team we did not have the lead late against was York and they have a good team with good balance.”

After playing in the Wheaton North Christmas tournament, the Warriors return to action Jan. 4 against Plainfield South and Jan. 5 at Downers Grove South.

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team was one of 12 programs that competed in the recent 13th annual York invitational in Elmhurst.

AT-Willowbrook took 10th with 42 points.

In the 50 freestyle, Jack Burns took fourth with a time of 22.77.

Evan Zimmerman placed 13th in the event with a time of 24.13.

In the 100 free, Burns was seventh with a time of 50.21. Cole McGinnis was 29th with a time of 1:01.61.

Sean Pienkos was 19th in the 200 free with a time of 2:03.17. Pienkos also took 20th in the 500 free with a time of 5:36.86. Michal Niemirski was 25th in 5:45.78.

Zimmerman took ninth in the backstroke with a time of 1:00.86.

Niemirski was 27th in 1:08.09.

Thomas Holmes was 20th in the breaststroke with a time of 1:14.53.

Ray Brisbois was 28th in the butterfly with a time of 1:21.59.

Gerald Legaspi was 27th in the 100 IM with a time of 1:16.85. In the 200 IM, Holmes was 23rd with a time of 2:29.84.

AT-Willowbrook was 10th in the 200 free relay in 1:37.49 with Zimmerman, Marco Chaidez, Eric Hoda and Burns.

AT-Willowbrook was seventh in the 400 free relay in 3:38.19 with Hoda, Chaidez, Zimmerman and Burns. AT-Willowbrook was 17th in the 200 medley relay with Niemirski, Holmes, Chaidez and Hoda. They finished with a time of 1:59.35.

Elmhurst College names 2018 Lincoln Laureate Brenda Guan is first-generation college student

Brenda Guan, an Elmhurst College senior majoring in exercise science, has been named the College’s 2018 recipient of the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement and Student Laureate Award.

Accompanied by her family, Guan received the award last month during the 44th Annual Convocation and Investiture of Student Laureates at the Old State Capitol in Springfield. Guan said she was very surprised to have won the award— she didn’t know she had even been nominated—and was delighted her parents could attend the ceremony with her.

“I’ve never seen them so proud, so happy,” she said, a first-generation college student, whose parents

emigrated to the U.S. from China.

“I didn’t think of myself as having done anything that prestigious, but I’m very proud and appreciative.”

Each fall, one outstanding senior from each of the four-year degree-granting institutions of higher learning in Illinois is presented with the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award, becoming a student laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois. Since the program’s inception in 1975, more than 2,000 students have received the honor.

Guan plans to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy after she graduates. She currently is interning as a therapy aide at a physical therapy clinic.

She previously served as an in-

SOS Jesse White announces new laws for 2019

Two new laws supported by Secretary of State Jesse White that take effect Jan. 1 include child passenger and bike safety initiatives.

The first law will require parents and caregivers to secure children in rear-facing safety seats until they are 2 years old or weigh 40 pounds or more or measure 40 or more inches tall.

“Children are five times safer riding in a rear-facing seat because their head, neck and spine are better protected in a crash,” White said. “Let’s make sure we keep our children safe by putting them in an appropriate car seat that is properly installed.”

Working to remove ‘spoof’ dialers, harassing calls “I have introduced legislation to address a problem that many of us face: receiving phone calls from spam and ‘spoof’ dialers who take on familiar numbers and pose as government billing agencies or other authorities to scam people. This issue initially came to my attention based on my own experiences receiving harassing, computer-generated calls.

To address this problem, I introduced the Stop Harassing Calls Act. “This bill would require the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to develop an ambitious plan to study illegal robo-calls and in turn make recommendations to phone carriers on what they can do to better protect their customers. Some carriers are already developing and implementing these initiatives, and it’s important that these best practices

In most instances, knowing the trail and traveling at a reasonable rate of speed for trail conditions can prevent accidents. It’s also important to be alert and sober. In North America, more than half of snowmobile fatalities involve intoxicated operators.

While the IDNR encourages everyone to take a snowmobile safety course, state law requires that persons at least 12 years of age and less than 16 years old must have in their possession a valid Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate of Competency issued by IDNR in order to operate a snowmobile alone. Details on safety course options are available on the IDNR website at http://www. dnr.illinois.gov/safety/Pages/SnowmobileSafety.aspx Basic safety tips for safe snowmobiling: • Never consume alcohol before or during a ride.

• Know your equipment, and make sure that equipment is in proper working order.

• Wear sensible, protective clothing designed for snowmobiling, like a full-size helmet, goggles, or face shield to prevent injuries from twigs, stones, ice chips, and flying debris.

• Avoid wearing long scarves, which may get caught in moving parts of the snowmobile.

• Know the terrain you are going to ride.

• Be aware of trails or portions of trails that may be closed.

• Drowning is one cause of snowmobile fatalities; when not familiar with the thickness of the ice or water currents, avoid these areas.

• Know the weather forecast, and especially the ice and snow conditions in the area.

• Always use the buddy system and never ride alone or unaccompanied.

• Travel at a reasonable rate of speed for visibility and conditions.
