Businessman gets prison for conning Villa Park man

Scammed 79-yearold out of $117,000 for remodeling kitchen

VILLA PARK — Last week, the Independent learned that a Woodridge businessman with a history of writing bad checks and ripping people off is set to serve a nine-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to theft and financial institution fraud on Thursday, Jan. DAVID 14.

BRIGGS The charges and sentence reportedly stem from two separate cases in December 2014 and January 2015 in which he stole from a customer and wrote bad checks to another business.

Last July, the Independent reported that David L. Briggs, 29, of Woodridge, who claimed to own a remodeling company called Intrella Industries, approached a victim about doing some remodeling. Briggs agreed to complete remod-

Conroy invites women for open conversation with Advisory Committee VILLA PARK — In order to serve as a voice for her district and incorporate the perspectives of area women, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, is hosting her Women’s Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Monday, Jan. 25 from 6 to 7 p.m. at her district office located at 28 S. Villa Ave. in Villa Park.

“I am committed to working collaboratively to resolving the state’s financial issues in a balanced and comprehensive way, and, to me, that must involve the perspectives and suggestions of area women,” she said.

“I host advisory committees to maintain an open dialogue with any local residents who want to weigh in on certain topics, and I look forward to discussing recent legislation that affects Illinois women, as well as hearing new ideas.”

Last year, Conroy led efforts to pass a new law that pauses the statute of limitations while

crime scene and DNA evidence is analyzed to give survivors of sexual assault more time to seek justice in the courts. Hoping to introduce more legislation that benefits women in Illinois, Conroy is inviting anyone who has ideas for legislation, or who would like to receive an update about what is happening in Springfield, to join this committee. All meetings are free and open to all residents of the 46th District.

“I passed legislation recently to help women escaping abusers and crime victims who need evidence tested, but I know we can work together to get more done for those at risk,” she said.

Continued from page 1 eling projects at the victim’s residence, which were never completed. The victim’s family became aware of the situation when they were contacted by the victim’s bank and notified of numerous suspicious payments being made to Briggs by the victim.

Villa Park police then interviewed Briggs and completed criminal subpoenas for his bank accounts. Investigators learned that, during the course of the investigation, Briggs spent the money and no remodeling had ever been completed.

The total loss to the victim was approximately $117,000.

At that time, Briggs was charged with Felony Theft by Deception (over $100,000) and Felony Theft by Deception (victim over 60) and was held at the DuPage County Jail.

At last week’s sentencing hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Diane Michalak said the victim paid Briggs $17,000 upfront, but Briggs came back almost daily for a week claiming to need more money for supplies.

The victim’s family members contacted police when they were notified by the bank about multiple payments to Briggs. Paperwork from several local casinos further proved Briggs often gambled the money away on the same day he collected it from the victim.

Reportedly, no work was

ever done to the victim’s home, no supplies were ever ordered and the victim never received a refund, aside from $25,000 Briggs has paid in restitution.

In another incident, Briggs was arrested for intentionally writing a check for $13,958 on Dec. 15, 2014, to a brand promotion company for services rendered, knowing it would not be authorized by the bank.

Michalak said Briggs was on parole when he committed the crimes, after serving eight years in prison on several similar theft by deception charges.

Briggs also has an outstanding theft charge in Las Vegas and is wanted on a $1.5 million warrant for writing a bad $130,000 check in May. “[David] Briggs’ greed knows no boundaries,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. “Whether stealing more than $115,000 from an elderly gentleman or refusing to pay $14,000 for services provided to him, Briggs is only concerned about himself. His inability to control his greed, however, has caught up with him and he will now spend a significant amount of time behind bars for his actions.”

Briggs will be required to serve half of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

He was also ordered to pay full restitution to his victims.

Villa Park’s Rakosnik elected president of DuPage County Fire Chiefs Honor comes on heels of grant for emergency simulator VILLA PARK — On Saturday, Jan. 9, Villa Park Fire Chief Ron Rakosnik was sworn in as President of the DuPage County Fire Chiefs.

Previously, Chief Rakosnik served two years as Treasurer and one year as Vice President of DuPage County Fire Chiefs. During the organization’s Annual Installation Dinner, State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D - Villa Park) swore in Chief

Rakosnik as President.

“I’m proud to be a member of the organization, but it’s an honor to be president,” said Fire Chief Rakosnik of his new position.

The organization, founded in 1975, provides a network for area fire chiefs to collaborate, promote fire safety and improve the fire service. As a non-profit, the DuPage County Fire Chiefs supplies scholarships for firefighter training programs. In addition the Chiefs also support the 100 Club of DuPage County, which assists families of fallen or injured law enforcement and firefighting

personnel.

One product of such countywide collaboration is the ability to apply for regional grants.

Recently, 12 local departments, including Villa Park, were awarded a $218,182 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for an emergency vehicle driver simulator.

Chief Rakosnik looks forward to continuing the effective collaboration DuPage County Fire Chiefs provides as well as continuing to improve the fire service throughout the county.

Youth football and cheer registration begins VILLA PARK — The Villa Park Warriors will host registration for the 2016 season. Registration takes place on Saturdays, Feb. 6 and 20 at Willowbrook High School, 1250 S. Ardmore Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Registration is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14 (grades K-8). Tackle Football is available for ages 7-14 and Flag football is available to 5,6, and 7 year olds. Competitive Cheer is available for 4th through 6th grade and Non-Competitive cheer is available for grades K through 4th grade.

The early registration fee for tackle football and competition cheer is $225 with a minimum $25 non-refundable deposit due at registration.

After the early registration, fee is $250. The fee for Flag Football and Non-Competitive Cheer is $100.

or the second year in a row, Timothy Christian High School held its ReNEW term between semesters coming out of the holiday break.

One of the classes offered this year was “Walking Alongside those with Special Needs.” In this class Timothy Christian students interacted with special needs individuals from the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association.

To say the least, Timothy students walked away impressed and enlightened by their experience in the all-day class, which was held over a week-and-a-half timeframe.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Timothy junior

Marina DalCerro. “It was one of the best classes I have taken so far with ReNEW. It was an eye-opener.”

DalCerro went to the Naperville Western DuPage Special Recreation Association.

“They show you how much happiness they have in their lives,” she said. “One of the kids was a non-verbal communicator and he was the happiest kid there. He was so happy to be with friends. You realize what we might think is out of the ordinary is very normal for them and you see how much they love life. We hung out with them and really got to know each other.”

Among the activities held at DalCerro’s location were dancing and arts and crafts.

Timothy sophomore Emily DeBoer and her group went to the Glen Ellyn location.

“This was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had,” DeBoer said. “It’s incredible to see the involvement of the participants. It was amazing to spend time with them and

DalCerro and DeBoer mentioned possibly pursuing working with special needs individuals in the near future.

“I could see myself having this as a potential job,” said DeBoer. “For me I wanted to see what it’s like to do this full-time. I had blast. The best part was swimming because we were able to have the most interaction with them.”

DalCerro said she is going to look into volunteer and job

opportunities with the organization. “’I’ve always wanted to work with people who have special needs,” she said. “I’m very happy I was able to do it this year. It was an amazing experience to the point that I would like to volunteer over the summer and on Saturdays and Sundays and I would like to apply for a job there.”

Both DalCerro and DeBoer came away impressed with Timothy’s second ReNEW term. “This year I got the one class I wanted,” said DalCerro. “It was incredible.”

DeBoer added: “I love ReNEW. It has been a really cool experience. The whole aspect of getting out of your comfort zone with these different classes is appealing. It’s a nice change of pace.”

Addison Jan. 14 Norma E. Alberttis, 56, of Addison, was arrested at a dental office in the 1-100 block of W. Lake St. at around 2:38 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. Police said Alberttis grabbed a phone from the victim and used profanity towards the victim at the dental office.

Jan. 11 Adrian Adamczyk, 24, of Streamwood, was arrested near Lincoln and Addison at around 1:20 p.m. Police said Adamczyk had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department.

Jan. 10 James Langone Jr., 60, of Addison, was arrested at a local store in the 1000 block of Rohl-

wing Road at around 1:55 p.m. and charged with retail theft and battery. Police said Langone Jr. took merchandise from the store without paying, and pushed a store employee as he exited the store.

Jan. 8 • Eric D. Armstrong, 38, of Palatine, was arrested near Army Trail and Swift at around 2:31 a.m. Police said he was reportedly driving against the flow of traffic, disobeying a traffic control device, and driving without his lights on. After he struck a median, Armstrong was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving too fast for conditions, no insurance, and driving without lights when required.

• Jeanette M. Lemak, 50, of Roselle, was arrested near Lake and Rohlwing at around 8:30 a.m. Police said Lemak had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department.

Villa Park Jan. 9 • An 18-year-old Villa Park

man was arrested in the 1-100 block of E. Elm at around 6:39 p.m. and charged with two counts of domestic battery.

• Adam L. Tarr, 26, of Lombard, was arrested in the 1600 block of S. Michigan at around 10:17 p.m. and charged with criminal trespass to property.

Jan. 8 • Two Villa Park women, one 47, the other 39, were arrested in the 1600 block of Ovaltine at around 12:21 a.m. Both were charged with two counts of domestic battery.

• Police said that between 6:55 and 7:05 p.m., an unknown suspect stole a 10-foot snowplow from the parking lot of a local store.

Jan. 6 • Marlena A. Assenato, 23, of Wood Dale, was arrested at a local store at around 6:42 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

Bensenville Trustee charged with retail theft Claims it was ‘honest mistake’

BENSENVILLE — Last week, the Independent learned that a Village Trustee from Bensenville had been arrested and charged with misdemeanor retail theft after reportedly leaving a Walmart store in Villa Park without paying for some items she had placed on the lower rack of her shopping cart, police said.

Arrested on Dec. 11, Susan

V. Janowiak, 61, is scheduled to appear in DuPage County court mid-week. She is accused of taking items including jeans, gifts cards, bags, boxes and wreaths, with a total value of less than $300, according to police.

Apparently, she paid for some of the items in her cart, but failed to pay for the items on the lower rack.

“It was an honest mistake,” Janowiak told officials.

A Bensenville resident since 1974, Janowiak is a former village clerk and president of the Park Board.

Viewpoint Facebook faux pas F

acebook is an online community and in being such has developed certain (often unwritten) rules that its users follow. While some rules are easy to understand and abide by, certain Facey situations leave me unsure of what Facebehavior protocol is called for in response to my scrolling.

Posting photos is a FB mainstay. But what do you do when a person posts a photo that is clearly sideways or, worse yet, upside-down? The inverted problem is multiplied 1080 if the post is a video. The person posting must be aware their image is not aligned with the rest of the world – unless they are standing on their head, which I suppose is a possibility.

If a sideways-posted photo looks particularly interesting, I pull it to my desktop and rotate it myself so it is in its full upright (normal) position. But, even if I like the photo, I don’t hit the like button because that would be like promoting bad behavior.

Here’s the thing: rotating a photo on Facebook is not only feasible, it’s as easy as pressing, well, the rotate button. It’s as

simple as that. Sigh.

Next in popularity to photo postings are birthday greetings.

Each day Facebook tells us who among our friends is experiencing a 24-hour b-day celebration.

As a FB friend or acquaintance it is our duty to come up with a unique and heartfelt birthday wish for each of our 537 friends.

Some days this means coming up with more than one unique and heartfelt message because no two birthday greetings should ever be the same.

When I’m having a noncreative unbirthday-wishing sort of day, I beat myself up for the blasé and boring greeting of, “Happy birthday, insert name here.” Surely the person notes my lack of sincerity and enthusiasm. On those days, I am a birthday greeting failure and do

a headstand and look at myself upside-down in the mirror with shame.

Another birthday conundrum occurs when it is your big day.

You receive dozens or perhaps hundreds of birthday hellos, wishes, hallelujahs and other assorted salutations. What to do?

Do you thank each greeter personally by responding to their message with a message of your own? If you choose this route, you are saddled to your Facey account for a hefty portion of the day, and that doesn’t feel like a happy birthday in my world.

Instead do you simply like each of the greetings individually, or do you take it one step further and wait until the day after your day and send one generic thank you message to the entire group of greeters? I don’t know the correct answer. I’m just posing the question because it’s weighed heavy on my mind for some time. Sharing the agony lessens it, somehow.

Finally (you knew it was coming) let’s talk politics. Everyone else is. It’s okay to have opinions and it’s even okay to post about them because I can scroll

through rather quickly, or block repeat offenders if I choose.

Trouble (for me) is that not every posting is factual. There are numerous “news” websites that post satire. Satire is not the truth. It uses exaggeration, irony and sarcasm to create humor.

There wouldn’t be a problem with this, if people understood that not everything on the Internet is true (it’s not?) nor is it meant to be. But, many good and trusting FB souls don’t know that – or choose to look past that – and post and repost and like and comment on satire as though it were the truth. And I cringe a little bit again and wonder why I’m even scrolling – again.

And then I am embarrassed – again. But this time for myself and the things I choose do and the time I waste scrolling and wondering if the plural of faux pas shouldn’t be faux pases. But it isn’t. Trust me. I looked it up on the Internet.

Do small things to ease in to a new career. Research. Write resumes. Network. Connect.

Submit your applications. Celebrate each step you take. Be kind along the way and know it is all a learning process. Every interview is a stepping-stone. Stay in the energy of congratulations and celebration knowing that each step is taking where you want to go.

That’s all life is, a series of steps. When we can relax and not be so hard on ourselves, it makes the present more enjoyable as we envision, and work towards, what it is we want next. Your todays will be more fun too.

St. Chalres Road in Elmhurst, on Saturday, February 13 at 7 p.m. as part of the Music@Bethel Concert Series. The concert program will include works by Fauré, Turina and Dohnányi.

New Park Arts Center celebrates first-ever art opening SHIFT exhibition on display through Feb. 1 VILLA PARK — The Park Art Center opened its first-ever curated exhibition, S​HIFT,​with a reception on the evening of Friday, Jan. 8. The exhibit features three artists who are said to “blur the lines between their occupation and their art-making.”

“These artists embrace their medium to an extreme level, exploring it at work for hours each day, as well as experimenting in off-hours to truly understand the expressive nature of their medium,” said Faith Humphrey Hill, Board member and curator of the exhibit.

The three featured artists are Jacob Fishman, Carey Overstreet, and Ted Strandt. The exhibition will remain on display through Feb. 1.

Addison Trail boys basketball team defeats Maine East Blazers making strides in second half of season

The Addison Trail boys basketball team recorded a recent 42-40 come-from-behind win over Maine East in non-conference action.

Addison Trail found itself down 14-8 after the first quarter and 31-21 at halftime. However, the Blazers tightened things up on the defensive end and held Maine East to only nine second-half points, including two points in the fourth quarter.

Addison Trail outscored Maine East 12-2 in the fourth quarter.

Eric Grygo had a doubledouble for Addison Trail with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Nick Fugarino added 10 points, which included two 3-pointers.

Stevan Jones had seven points

and two steals, while Jack Kalbas has six points. Nick Conrad finished with seven assists.

Grygo added four assists and two steals. Addison Trail shot 43.8 percent from the field.

In earlier recent action, the Blazers downed Fenton in a non-conference game and lost to Proviso East in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play. Over the holidays Addison Trail went 2-2 at the Centralia tournament, losing to Champaign Central and Belleville West and defeating Sullivan and Salem.

“Fenton was one of our better games of the year,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons earlier last week. “We also had a good effort against Proviso East, but we made too many mistakes, especially in the turnover department.”

Lyons also was pleased with how his team fared over the holidays. “That was our third year going to Centralia,” he

said. “The kids really enjoy it.

They get to play in a cool environment at Centralia and they are together to do team-building things. It’s been a good experience the last three years and we’re looking forward to going there again next year. We challenged the guys down in Centralia and talked about competing at a high level and doing what it takes to have sustained success. We saw that in our game against Salem and then in the games against Fenton and Proviso East. Our energy was better and our focus was better.

I’ll never question these guys being ready to play and that’s a good thing. That’s something we expect from Day 1. I like the energy we are playing with right now. Our key is to get back to doing some of the fundamental things and focusing on the mental part of the game, which costs us sometimes at certain times.”

It’s starting to get frustrating for the girls. At the beginning of the season we were struggling in several aspects. But in the last few games if you watch us play you would see everything working but the ball going in the basket for us. Our defense has been fine. Aurora Central Catholic is a very good team and they are at the top of the conference with RiversideBrookfield and Wheaton Academy. That game didn’t look lopsided. We just struggled to put the ball in the basket.”

Fenton trailed 11-0 at the beginning of the game against Aurora Central. “That takes the air out of the balloon when that happens,” said Anderson. “It makes it a lot harder to shoot a 3-pointer with your feet ready when you are down 11 points early.”

Anderson saw the opposite occur in the win against Chicago Academy. “We had a great shooting night against Chicago Academy,” he said. “We’re going to keep plugging away.

I’m happy with how hard the girls are playing and how they run the offense. We’re getting shots we like to shoot.”

Anderson cited continued strong play from Courtney Susmarski. “Courtney has kind of taken over for us,” said Anderson. “She had 14 of our 19 points the other night. Her scoring average has gone up dramatically. She looks to take over from a scoring standpoint.

She’s tough to stop. If a team is playing zone, we can put her outside because she’s our second-best 3-point shooter.

She’s also hard to guard under the basket. She goes to the freethrow line a lot. She’s up to 10 or 11 points a game.”

Anderson noted Fenton’s schedule is rather full the next three weeks. “We have a busy three weeks coming up,” he said. “It’s like a whirlwind.

We’re very anxious to get into the second half of the conference season. We’re looking forward to seeing these teams a second time so our girls can see how much they’ve improved.

And hopefully that positive vibe will affect how the ball goes in the basket. In the games where we shoot a decent percentage we do well. We’ve been playing a lot better lately, but we need to keep working on the ball going in the basket.”

They are buying into what we are doing and are being unselfish. Defensively we’re rebounding the ball better, which has helped us out.”

“Eric has been very steady for us,” said Lyons. “He’s our leading scorer and rebounder and has been very consistent for us.”

Michael Williams had a strong night against Proviso East with 24 points. “Michael had a great game,” said Lyons. “He went out with an ankle injury, but he had his best game of the year. He always gives us energy

and is out there rebounding and hustling. He rebounded in that game and hit some 3s. It was a very impressive performance.”

Addison Trail wrapped up play in the Lake Zurich tournament earlier this week with a pair of games. The Maine East game was part of the tournament.

“We had hosted our own tournament the past few years before Christmas and dropped it this year,” said Lyons. “This allows us to still get a few more games. When the opportunity came up to get into that tournament we jumped on it. It’s something new and we get to play teams we don’t traditionally see. We’ll be playing a lot of basketball the next two weeks.”

The Maine East win bumped the Blazers up to 8-5 overall (Addison Trail was 2-2 through its first four WSC Gold games.

Willowbrook Fenton girls basketball team moving forward wrestling team rolls on Bison score recent 64-24 win over Chicago Academy

The Fenton girls basketball team might not have the most sightly win-loss record.

The Bison were 3-15 overall and 0-6 in Metro Suburban Conference West Division play through their first 18 games.

But Fenton coach Tim Anderson is looking well beyond numbers on a piece of paper.

“We’ve been up and down, but we have made progress since the beginning of the year and we are continuing to get better,” he said. “The big thing is we are still struggling to put the ball in the basket.”

In recent games, Fenton dropped a 48-29 game to St. Viator and also lost 43-26 to Elmwood Park. The Bison defeated Chicago Academy 64-24 and lost to Aurora Central Catholic by a 49-19 count.

The wins and high place finishes continue to pile up for the Willowbrook wrestling team.

Through mid-last week, the Warriors were 19-4 overall in duals and 3-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold action.

Willowbrook also recently finished 10th out of 25 teams at the Sycamore tournament.

“We are battling despite injuries,” said Willowbrook coach Brandon Murphy. “We have been without multiple wrestlers, but we are continuing to push forward. We only brought 11 of the possible 14 weight classes to Sycamore. This made it difficult to score in the top tier team point-wise.”

On the individual front, numerous Willowbrook records have fallen so far this season.

Senior standout Matt Rowland has broken multiple school records, including the all-time program wins record. Rowland

through mid-last week had 167 career wins, which has bested the previous record held by two-time state champion Mike Behnke.

Rowland also established the all-time takedown record previously held by two-time state place-winner Antoine Burns.

Rowland finished first at the Sycamore tournament where he defeated a two-time state champion in the finals.

Sophomore Jack Jessen finished second at Sycamore. He lost to the defending Class 2A state champion in the finals.

“Matt and Jack are constantly working toward reaching their goals,” said Murphy.

“They push each other every day and they use these midseason tournaments as a gauge to see where they are at technically and conditioning-wise.

They both make adjustments after every tournament. I can’t wait for the state series to start for them.”

Rowland was 35-1 at 170 pounds and also has a second-place finish at the prestigious Dvorak invitational to his credit. Jessen was 35-1 at 182 pounds and placed first at

Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team defeats Proviso West Squad gearing up for home stretch of season; Wallace excelling

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team came back from the holiday break and recorded a West Suburban Conference crossover win against Proviso West.

“The team looked good,” said Addison Trail-Willowbrook coach Neil Wahlgren.

“Some of our guys swam in different events and they had a lot of fun.”

Wahlgren said the team has been hard at work getting prepared for the tail end of the season. “We are putting all the pieces together as we come down the home stretch,” he said.

Addison Trail-Willowbrook was slated to face WSC Gold division foe Hinsdale South

recently and will swim against Morton Friday in another conference meet and will then head to the Shepard invitational Saturday.

“We have some tough meets coming up,” said Wahlgren.

“We’re excited to see where we place overall at Shepard. I think it is going to be a good end of the season. We have a chance to do well in some of these meets.”

Addison Trail-Willowbrook continues to be led by Willowbrook student Ethan Wal-

lace, who is a sprint freestyle swimmer. “Ethan, for sure, has been real strong for us,” said Wahlgren. “He has a chance this year in either the 50 or 100. Some days it’s the 50 for him and others it’s the 100. The hard part is with the 50 everything has to be perfect.”

Wahlgren also has been thrilled with Wallace’s leadership this season. “Ethan is a good role model,” he said. “He shows the other guys how hard you have to work in practice.”

It has been great to see different kids get some varsity experience. It shows us and them where they are and what they need to do in order to get to the next level. Seniors Nagle, Wozniak and James Moore also have been key cogs for the Warriors. “This has been a Cinderella season for three seniors in particular,” said Murphy. “Noah Nagle has 26 wins so far and that is three times as many as he had last year. He is a poster child for improvement. Jake and James both were backups last season and have stepped into the role of starters and have not disappointed. Jake and James are

among the strongest leaders on the team. They always are in the corner for their teammates. It has been a true pleasure having them in the lineup this season.”

Murphy also cited strong work from senior Ramon Aguilar. “Ramon came through with a big win (recently) in our home quad,” he said. “He kept fighting and eventually wore his opponent down and came up with the pin.”

Willowbrook recently hosted WSC Gold Division foe Downers Grove South for senior night.

“During practice both guys give me everything they have,” said Wahlgren. “They are challenging guys for spots. They are going to be very good.”

Addison Trail students Mikey Strycharz and Jacob Grygo have been two additional bright spots. “Mikey has been strong throughout the year for us,” said Wahlgren. “Jacob has been the same way.”

Strycharz swims the 50 and 100, while Grygo also is a sprint freestyler.

Wahlgren also is excited about the team’s relay prospects with Strycharz, Grygo, Zimmerman and Burns.

“Our relays are good,” he said. “We have a good core group here and hopefully we can continue to build on that.

With these younger guys we have the potential to be a strong team the next few years.”

Wahlgren noted the Shepard invitational has a pair of frosh-soph relays on the lineup card. “Those are extra events and we’ll get our guys together and try to win those events and show what the future looks like,” he said.

current study is so important,” Forchetti says. The AMITA Health Neurosciences Institute, Elk Grove Village launched the late-stage study June 30 and has treated 9 participants so far. The 150 sites in the study can accept a total of 1,350 participants with mild memory problems (also known as prodromal AD or MCI, Mild Cognitive Impairment) and earlystage Alzheimer’s disease, says Jennifer Clauson, Director of Neuroscience Research for the institute.

Fenton wrestlers win another conference championship Bison girls bowlers making improvements

Conference titles and the Fenton wrestling team have gone hand in hand in recent times.

The Bison added to their collection with a recent 38-29 victory over Riverside-Brookfield to win the Metro Suburban Conference title for the fourth year in a row and seventh time in the last nine seasons.

Earlier, Fenton downed Glenbard South to inch closer to the title. The R-B win pushed Fenton to 17-3 overall in duals.

In the R-B win, Angel Nava (145 pounds), Dylan Butts (182), Joe Garcia (220) and Isaiah Brock (285) won their matches by pinfall.

Sebastian Kaspar earned a major decision at 120, while Kyle Higgins did the same at 170. Kacper Piskorz (132) and Nikko Castaneda (160) also scored wins. Dan Warren was applauded by Fenton coach Brian Hastings for his effort at 138 against a highly ranked R-B opponent.

In an earlier triangular meet, Fenton hosted Elmwood Park and IC Catholic Prep and scored two victories. In a 41-16 win over Elmwood Park, Kaspar (120 pounds) and Tim Wolf (182) led the way.

The Addison Trail girls gymnastics team scored a recent 123.85-102.50 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win over District 88 neighbor Willowbrook.

On vault, Addison Trail’s Kennedy O’Neill won the event with an 8.6. Willowrook’s Katherine Gibson was second with an 8.3, while Addison Trail’s Madalyn Rumps was third with an 8.2.

On beam, O’Neill finished first with an 8.7. Teammate Lauren Stamatopoulos was second with a 7.85. Addison Trail’s Jessica Rosal was third with a 7.65, while Willowbrook’s Gibson was fourth at 7.55.

On bars, Rumps was first with an 8.4. Teammate Terra Garcia was second with a 7.4, while Rosal was third at 7.2. Willowbrook’s Gibson was fourth at 6.1.

On floor, O’Neill made it three first-place finishes with a score of 8.3. Rumps was second at 7.4, while Stamatopoulos was third at 7.35, Gibson was fourth at 7.15.

In the all-around competition, Addison Trail’s Garcia was first with a score of 30.0. Gibson was second at 29.1, while Stamatopoulos was third at 29.05.

Willowbrook’s Jackie Bliss was fourth at 25.65.

Willowbrook girls basketball The Willowbrook girls basketball team went 1-2 during a recent three-game stretch.

In a 46-33 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win over Leyden, Willowbrook led 16-11 after the first quarter and 29-18 at halftime. The Warriors limited Leyden to 15 secondhalf points.

Josie Zabran led the Warriors with 10 points, 14 rebounds and three steals. Kalyn Konrath added 10 points and eight rebounds. Milena Sogura had six rebounds. Alyssa Spada had four assists, while Danielle Velasquez had three assists.

Willowbrook outrebounded Leyden 43-25.

In a 58-51 non-conference loss to South Elgin, Willowbrook led 9-4 after the first quarter and 22-21 at halftime.

South Elgin outscored Willowbrook 14-9 in the third quarter and 23-20 in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors shot 35 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers. South Elgin scored 20 points off Willowbrook turnovers.

Spada led the Warriors with 12 points. Zabran had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Sogura had seven rebounds.

Velasquez had six assists.

In a 65-63 overtime loss to Downers Grove South in WSC Gold play, Willowbrook led 21-7 after the first quarter and 35-29 at halftime. Downers South outscored Willowbrook 28-22 in the second half to force overtime.

Spada led the Warriors with 17 points (6-for-7 free throws).

Zabran had 16 points (6-for-11 shooting) and had six rebounds.

Grace Chantos finished with seven rebounds and four assists.

Konrath and Velasquez each had five rebounds. Willowrook committed 19 turnovers. Downers South scored 19 points off those turnovers. Willowbrook did score 15 second-chance points in the game.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team rebounds to beat St. Edward

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team shook off the sting of a pair of recent overtime losses to record a 56-49 Metro Suburban Conference West Division victory over Elgin St. Edward.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 10-7 overall and the Knights finished their first time through the division with a 2-4 record. The game was part of the annual IC Catholic Prep Coaches vs. Cancer event.

After playing to a 9-9 firstquarter tie, St. Edward held a slim 21-20 advantage going into the third quarter. However, IC Catholic Prep used a

15-8 run in the third quarter to pull away against its frequent foe the last few years. IC Catholic Prep defeated St. Edward over the holidays to win the IC Catholic Prep-Westmont tournament.

Will Lyles led the Knights with 21 points. Troy Burrows added 14 points, while Austin Reed had six points. Angel Ramirez and Matt Sutton each had five points.

In earlier action, IC Catholic Prep dropped a tough 82-80 non-conference game to Lisle in triple overtime.

The Knights led 15-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 32-30 heading into halftime.

Lisle 13-12 in the third quarter and 17-16 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Austin Reed led the Knights with 22 points, eight rebounds, four steals and four assists.

He made four 3-pointers and shot 4-for-4 from the freethrow line. Jordan Rowell, in his first action of the basketball season, added 15 points and 12 rebounds. Ramirez had 11 points. Sutton also had 11 points and made three 3-pointers. Garrett Cheng had nine rebounds and five assists, while Lyles had two blocked shots.

The Knights also lost 63-61 in overtime to Aurora Central Catholic in a MSC West game.

Burrows led the Knights

with 28 points, which included seven 3-pointers. Sutton had 11 points (2 three-pointers), while Ramirez had eight points (2 three-pointers). Sutton added five assists, while Lyles had seven rebounds. The Knights made nine 3-pointers in the game.

“I wish we were on the other end of those overtime games, but they still were fun,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell earlier last week.

Tyrrell noted in the Lisle game, his team trailed by nine points with under two minutes to play in regulation, but two Reed 3-pointers and a 3-pointer from Sutton knotted things up.
