Campaign season kicks off

Village President hopeful Chuck Pickerill hosts first event

The November elections are barely over, but a new campaign season has just begun in Villa Park. With the April 4 election just under three months away, Charles ‘Chuck’ Pickerill hosted the first candidate meet-and-greet on Thursday, Jan. 12 at Dominick’s Restaurant on St. Charles Rd. “I want to let everybody know I’m here to win this and bring progress back to Villa Park,” he said to a room of about 50 people who gathered at the event.

Current Village President Deborah Bullwinkel decided not to seek a second term, and Pickerill is one of three candidates vying to fill the Village President’s seat.

Current Trustees Bob Taglia and Al Bulthuis are also on the ballot.

Additionally, three Trustee terms are also expiring, including Taglia’s.

A long-time resident of Villa Park, Pickerill owns the U-Haul truck rental business on Roosevelt Rd. in the Village. Maintaining current businesses as well as encouraging new business growth in Villa Park were major themes of his speech.

“I’m well versed on building, engineering, planning, zoning and all that,” he said. “We need to go forward and bring Villa Park into the 2000’s.”

Pickerill’s father, Charles Pickerill, was the fire chief in Villa Park for 13 years. The elder Pickerell passed away in 2009.

Other issues Pickerill brought up include the need to improve recreational facilities in Villa Park.

“I played softball for 20 years in Villa Park,” he said. “Our baseball fields don’t function. We need a modern recreational center. The pools need to be fixed. What we have now is an embarrassment.”

Citing his long history of development in Villa Park, including the development of at least 30 homes in the Village, as well as his years of volunteering at the Tri-Town YMCA, Pickerill said he decided to run for Village President now because recent administrations haven’t engaged residents and businesses.

“There have never been so many vacancies in the commissions in this town,” he said. “Community Pride, Economic Development, Planning and Zoning. These are all important and it seems like nobody has gone out and tried to fill these positions. I will encourage residents to join these commissions.

Their voices will be heard by the Board.”

Harking back to his business experience, Pickerill acknowledged that modernizing recreational facilities and attracting businesses comes with a price tag.

“There’s plenty of money in this town, the taxes are certainly high enough. “ he said.

WB alumni meet with students in AP classes On Jan. 11, four Willowbrook alumni spoke with about 250 Willowbrook students regarding Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses.

The event was hosted by the Guidance Department to provide students with an opportunity to ask questions and hear firsthand from fellow Warriors what to expect with AP classes, as well as the benefits of completing college-level coursework while in high school.

The alumni who participated are Eugene Ciesla (class of 2016, attending Northern Illinois University), Amanda Barrie (class of 2016, attending The University of Tampa), Nicholas Eufrasio (class of 2015, attending University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Tyler Rusnak (class of 2015, attending University of Minnesota Twin Cities). Ciesla,

Barrie and Eufrasio each completed seven AP classes while at Willowbrook, and Rusnak completed 11 AP courses. By taking those classes, they earned a combined 122 college credits.

The speakers discussed how AP courses take time and effort, but are worth it for those who are willing to put in the work. AP classes offer students a chance to earn college credit (depending on their exam score), which in turn allows them to advance quicker and save money.

They added high school is a great time to complete higher-level academic work, as supports are in place to help students through the class. Lastly, they shared that taking AP classes doesn’t mean there won’t be time to participate in other activities and enjoy a social life.

Last week, DuPage County Treasurer Gwen Henry announced the opening of the application period for the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program. The program allows qualifying seniors, aged 65 years and older, to defer up to $5,000 of their property taxes until the time they sell their home.

“To qualify, the applicant’s household income cannot exceed $55,000,” Henry said. “Additionally, the prop-

Unfortunately, according to Henry, many seniors don’t know about this program and its benefits.

“To increase awareness, our office is once again working with local churches and other organizations to help inform seniors about the existence of the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program,” she said.

Application forms were automatically mailed to last year’s participants, Henry said.

Addison Jan. 13 William S. Leonhard Jr., 31, of Bloomingdale, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding following a traffic stop near Lake and Neva at around 1:33 a.m.

Jan. 12 • Alberto N. Adame, 27, of Addison, had two failure to appear warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department and one failure to appear warrant out of the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, according to police. He also was charged with driving while license suspended and an expired registration near Addison and Oak at around 10:49 p.m.

• Kenneth E. Thomas, 57, of Addison, was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle in the 1200 block of Aspen Way at around 2:47 a.m.

We’d been looking forward to the week for months. We planned and packed and prepared to play. The months of waiting became weeks, the weeks became days and then it was here: vacation!

Seven days of perfectly choreographed bliss. Or maybe not.

Our trip took us on a journey to visit the world’s most famous Mickey. It’s one of our favorite destinations because it’s a place where grown adults wear silly looking mouse ears on their heads while dining on oversized, overpriced turkey legs and no one thinks that’s weird.

Oh, and there are the rides and attractions.

ored matching T-shirts to commemorate our vacation. I forgot to mention, families wearing silly matching T-shirts are also the norm at Disney.

Except our T-shirts didn’t arrive until the day after we left so we never got the chance to take a dorky group photo to post on Facebook. There’s always next year.

We arrived at our rental home and prepped to hit the parks hard

the next morning. I set my alarm for 6:30, which is much earlier than any family should ever have to wake up when on vacation. All hail the mouse.

Before bed, I went to brush my teeth and encountered a mysterious and scary situation. My pink travel toothbrush was already wet. I was vacationing with my husband, three sons, daughter and son-in-law. My daughter had her own bathroom and toothbrush. While perhaps a bit sexist, it seemed obvious that the pink toothbrush would belong to the mom. Apparently not. A wet brush doesn’t lie.

I did what I usually do when confronted with a mysterious and scary situation. I quizzed the brothers.

“What color is your toothbrush?” I asked.

“Pink,” said one who shall not be named to save him from embarrassment. Luckily I had a spare brush.

I’m a seasoned mom. A spare brush goes with the territory.

Despite my responsible alarm setting, we overslept the next morning.

That’s because I’d set it for p.m. instead of a.m. We scrambled to get out the door and managed to be just 15 minutes off our goal time.

“We can do this,” my husband said. He’s the biggest kid in the bunch.

The roads in Florida are plastered with purple signs telling you where to turn and which way to go in order to reach the park of your choice.

We managed to get lost in the maze of purple signs. The boys found the correct route on their phones and blurted directions from the back

seat. My husband gripped the steering wheel, the stress showing just a wee bit in his white knuckles.

After a few rights and a couple of lefts, we managed to reach our magical destination, just minutes before the park opened. We exited the vehicle and ran to the gates.

Most of us made it through the bag checkers and metal detectors without a hitch, but my husband (lucky guy that he is) got chosen for extra security screening. This caused him to scowl and delayed our entire party by at least 30 seconds.

We ran (I jogged) to the ride of choice and prepared to wait in line.

Villa Park 2016: A look back

Part 2: July to December

In a recent issue, the Villa Park Independent highlighted some stories from the first half of 2016. Here is a retrospective of the final six months of last year. Happy New Year!

July: Villa Park sure can put on a parade and the Independence Day celebration has become legendary in the surrounding communities. The 2016 version didn’t disappoint with a huge turnout for the 4th of July morning spectacle. Local youth baseball, football and cheerleading teams were well represented. The Willowbrook H.S. marching band played, businesses, service clubs and elected officials all marched and celebrated America’s 240’s birthday.

August: The Willowbrook Warriors football team kicked off its 2016 campaign with a loss Grayslake North. The team’s fortunes would soon change, however, and the squad went on to post a 8-4 record, including two state playoff victories. The Warriors hadn’t advanced to a third post-season game in over two decades.

September: Fun! Oktoberfest was a big hit, with a weekend of carnival rides, music and the always-popular ‘Bubba the alligator’ reptile show at Lions Park. Not so fun: The Village Board of Trustees approved an increase in storm water and sewer fees of about $9 per month for homeowners to help pay for needed infrastructure repairs.

October: Halloween was spooky fun in Villa Park with tons of kids visiting local businesses to ‘trick or treat’ on the weekend before the 31st.

Residents got another kind of treat, however, when Fire Chief Rakosnik announced that a FEMA grant for

November: The election dominated national, state and local news for months leading up to Nov. 8. Villa Park resident Thomas Cullerton won reelection to a second term as State Senator for the 23rd district. Villa Park’s representative in the Illinois House Deb Conroy was also elected to another term.

On the local level, Villa Park vot-

ers did not approve a ballot measure to increase sales tax in the Village to help pay for infrastructure improvements. The 1/2 cent increase was proposed as part of a two-pronged plan to raise funds for water and sewer repairs underneath roads that are slated for reconstruction as part of the $23 million road repair bond

referendum that was approved by voters a year earlier. The other part of the plan for funding (an increase in water/sewer rates) was approved in October by the Village Board.

December: Once again the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce hosted ‘Joyful Traditions’ at the Gazebo on Ardmore Ave. and the Prairie Path. Though a bit cold, the spirit of the holidays (along with hot cocoa and toasted marshmallows) kept the crowds warm. The annual event featured carols by the Willowbrook H.S. choir, food provided by the VFW Post #2801, Dunkin Donuts, and other local businesses, horse-drawn carriage rides, make your own s’mo-

res and a chance to talk with Santa Claus!

Politics wasn’t forgotten just because the November election was over: There is a local election coming up in April. Current Village President Deborah Bullwinkel announced she would not seek reelection. Current Trustees Al Bulthuis and Bob Taglia along with long-time resident Chuck Pickerill will vie for the next fouryear term leading the Village. Additionally, three Trustee seats are also on the ballot: Incumbents Nick Cuzzone and Robert Wagner are running for second terms. Residents Cheryl Tucker and David Cilella will also be on the ballot.

Villa Park resident Tom Cullerton was voted in for a second term as Illinois State Senator on Nov. 8. State Representative Deb Conroy, Kids got a chance to see some incredible reptiles at Oktoberfest, (held in September) and a few even got to ride “Bubba the Alligator!” whose district includes Villa Park, also won reelection.

Raja opposes repeal of Affordable Care Act

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi stood strong last week against the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, taking to the floor of the House of Representatives in debate over legislation that would mark the first step by House Republi-

cans to repeal the ACA without a replacement.

“Middle-class families need good-paying jobs and affordable health care,” he said. “The bill before us today would rob them of both. Repealing without replacing

the Affordable Care Act would devastate our economy and harm millions of middle-class families.

Within the 8th District of Illinois, we could lose upwards of over $550 million from our economy and over 4,000 jobs.”

Krishnamoorthi added during debate that his past experience running small businesses in the national security and technology sectors gave him insight into the role of the ACA and small businesses.

“I know firsthand how import-

ant health coverage is to workers and to business,” he said. “Without the protections of the Affordable Care Act, we will see fewer entrepreneurs take the risk of starting a business and fewer workers take the risk of working for a start-up.”

The convening of the 100th General Assembly Jan. 11 brings with it new leadership and a renewed commitment to meeting current challenges and welcoming future opportunities awaiting Illinois, according to State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst).

The 24th District State Senator took part in inaugural ceremonies Jan. 11 in the Senate Chambers. He has served in the Senate since August 2014, and previously served a term in the House of

Representatives.

“Our legislative inauguration symbolizes a new start. I hope the spirit of cooperation extends beyond today’s ceremonies, and Illinois’ leaders move beyond the partisan impasse,” he said.

“It is clear that Illinois is better served with bipartisan government and bipartisan solutions. We need a responsible approach and long-overdue reforms to a system that clearly is not working.”

With no meaningful reforms, Illinois

is projected to have a $5.3 billion hole in the Fiscal Year 2017 budget and by June 30, the state could have $13.5 billion in unpaid bills. The Governor’s Office of Management and Budget has released its three-year fiscal projections mandated by state statute, and those numbers are daunting. The projections show that under “auto-pilot” budgets over the next three years, the state’s backlog of bills could reach $34 billion by June 30, 2020.

Nybo said the lawmakers should support the kind of policies that encourage job creation and growth.

Other legislative priorities should be property tax relief; education funding and reforms that prepare young people for careers; workers’ compensation and regulation reforms that encourage business growth and jobs; and reining in state spending.

The 24th Senate District includes all or parts of the communities of Claren-

don Hills, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Oak Brook Terrace, Western Springs, Westmont, Wheaton and Willowbrook in DuPage and Cook counties.

Harvest ice the 1890s way at Kline Creek Farm’s ‘Ice Harvest’ Jan. 27-29 Weather permitting, visitors will help cut and transport ice blocks

Visitors are invited to harvest ice the old-fashioned way during the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s “Ice Harvest” from 1-4 p.m. Jan. 27-29 at Kline Creek Farm at 1N600 County Farm Road in West Chicago, if ice conditions allow.

Visitors will get a glimpse into how families kept food cold before electricity and mechanical refrigeration

by helping Kline Creek Farm staff and volunteers score and cut ice into blocks on Timber Lake. Then they can help transport the ice to the icehouse and see how properly stacking and insulating the ice allows the blocks to stay frozen for months — without electricity.

“Kline Creek Farm is one of the few places in Chicagoland that cuts

and stores ice the old-fashioned way,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Al Murphy, District 6.

“For many visitors, seeing the labor required during the coldest time of the year to make sure foods remained chilled through the hottest is a real eye-opener,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

Registration is not needed for the free program, but visitors are encouraged to call the farm the morning of each day at 630-876-5900 to ensure ice conditions will allow cutting that day.

Regardless of whether ice is cut, staff and volunteers will be on hand to show some of the tools and equipment used and to talk about ice cutting and

the importance of ice on a farm in the 1890s.

In addition to “Ice Harvest,” Kline Creek Farm will offer smaller ice-cutting demonstrations Feb. 4, weather permitting, at the District’s free “Wonders of Winter” event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mayslake Peabody Estate at 1717 W. 31st Street in Oak Brook.

Illinois-American Water seeks applicants for Environmental Grant Program Projects to improve, restore or protect watersheds could receive up to $10,000

The application process is now open for Illinois American Water’s 2017 Environmental Grant Program.

The program supports innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect watersheds through partnerships. Diverse activities like watershed cleanups, reforestation efforts, biodiversity projects, streamside buffer restoration projects, wellhead protection initiatives and hazardous

waste collection efforts are supported through grants of up to $10,000.

“Illinois American Water is committed to ensuring water quality through testing and treatment, as well as through consumer education and community source protection programs,” said Bruce Hauk, the current president of Illinois American Water. “We believe everyone is an environmental steward in protecting the nation’s water supplies, and this program is a way to help communities play an active role in this important effort.”

To qualify, proposed projects must be located in an Illinois American Water service area and: • address a source water or watershed protection need in the community

• be completed between May 1, 2017 and November 30, 2017 • be a new or innovative program for the community, or serve as a significant expansion to an existing program • be carried out by a formal or informal partnership between two or more organizations; • provide evidence of sustainability (continued existence after the American Water grant monies are utilized) In 2016, Illinois American Water issued six grants totaling $15,000 as follows: - The Alton Community School District #11’s Rock Spring Park Watershed Restoration Project received a $4,000 grant to construct a bio retention system and rain garden in an outdoor classroom. - The

Library, Willowbrook High School team up for Engineering Club The Villa Park Public Library and Willowbrook High School are teaming up to bring the exciting world of engineering to middle school students.

Led by Willowbrook teachers Joshua Zwart and Kevin Quinn and a few of their students, the library will hold Engineering Club on from 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 21, March 21, and April 18.

All students in grades 6-8 are welcome to attend this fun and educational program where they will explore engineering and science in action through a variety of projects and experiments.

Zwart currently teaches Willowbrook’s Project Lead the Way Principles of Engineering course, while Quinn teaches the Project Lead the Way Introduction to Engineering Design course. The two have also taught a variety of other classes at the high school, including algebra, AP calculus AB, woods, home repair, architectural drafting, and computer repair.

Willowbrook boys basketball team continues to roll Warriors score 12-point win over conference foe Leyden

The Willowbrook boys basketball team kept up its winning ways with a recent 54-42 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory over Leyden.

The win pushed Willowbrook to 12-1 overall and 4-1 in WSC Gold action.

“We led from beginning to end

and had several players who played very well,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins.

Ethan Schuemer led the way for Willowbrook with 16 points and an impressive 22 rebounds. The Warriors also received key scoring contributions from Matthew Myers, Matas Masys and Sikander Zafar.

Willowbrook again excelled on defense, forcing 17 Leyden turnovers.

“Our defense was our strength,” said Perkins. “We were able to create turnovers and get easy fast-break baskets. Our guys are locked in on

their defensive assignments. We used a lot of full-court pressure, halfcourt trap and man-to-man. All three were strengths against Leyden.”

Willowbrook did shoot only 1-for17 from the 3-point line. “We did not shoot particularly well,” said Perkins. “That wasn’t a strength, but everything else went well.”

Willowbrook was playing its first game since Dec. 28. “We had talked about coming out and staying aggressive,” said Perkins. “We had to shake out the rust. We hadn’t played a game in a long time and Leyden had played twice last week. They

were in better game shape. We also were playing on a Tuesday at 6 p.m.

That’s not our regular time and it wasn’t our regular crowd. The guys did a good job of overcoming different adversity. I’m proud of that and I’m proud of them going out there and getting the win.”

Scheumer continues to be a key presence for the Warriors. “Ethan is our leading scorer and rebounder,” said Perkins. “He’s shooting over 50 percent from the field through 13 games. So far, so good. He’s done a great job for us.”

Willowbrook wrapped up play

earlier this week in the Sterling High School Martin Luther King tournament. Willowbrook played a total of four games there—two doubleheaders. Going into this year’s event, Willowbrook was 6-2 there over the last two years.

“Our goal is to get a third tournament championship,” said Perkins, whose team won its tournaments at Thanksgiving and Christmas. “We like playing in three tournaments.

They are spaced out and the nice thing with the Sterling one is it’s two hours away from home, so we’re facing teams we usually don’t see.”

AT-Willowbrook is scheduled to swim this week at Morton. A win there and the team would clinch the WSC Gold regular-season conference title heading into the conference meet at Hinsdale South.

Fenton wrestlers run record to 14-0 with win against Addison Trail

The wins continue to pile up for the Fenton wrestling team.

This time, the Bison recorded a 49-14 non-conference win over Addison Trail. The win moved Fenton to 14-0 overall in dual meets this season.

“We wrestled well against a tough Addison Trail squad,” said Fenton coach Brian Hastings. “All 13 of our wrestlers competed very well and we ended up winning 11 of those matches.”

Nikko Castaneda, Kyle Higgins, Dylan Butts and Isaiah Brock each scored pinfall wins for Fenton.

Through late last week, Angel Nava was leading Fenton with a 22-4 record. Butts had a 19-3 record, while Kacper Piskorz was 142. Castaneda was 13-3 and Ivan Rodriguez had a 14-4 mark. Brock was 13-6, while Jeremy Piskorz had a 13-9 record. Higgins and Ryan Mencini each had 12-9 records, while Anthony Park was 10-10. Danny Ramirez and Michael Bailon each had nine wins.

Fenton hosted Riverside-Brookfield and IC Catholic Prep earlier this week in a triangular Metro Suburban Conference meet.

In terms of state rankings, Fenton still was ranked No. 9 in the state in Class 2A by Illinois Matmen (www.illinoismatmen.com).

Individually, Nava was ranked No. 5 in Class 2A at 138 pounds.

Nava has three top-five tournament finishes and what the ranking service considers three notable wins.

Butts was ranked fifth at 182 pounds and had three top-three tournament finishes, plus one notable win.

Piskorz was ranked No. 9 in Class 2A at 132 pounds. He has two top-five tournament finishes and what the ranking service considers one notable win.

Mencini earned an honorable mention ranking at 145 pounds. He has two top-five tournament finishes.

Fenton girls basketball The Fenton girls basketball team dropped a recent 46-15 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game to Glenbard South. The Bison also lost 72-35 to Kaneland in non-conference play and dropped a 60-33 MSC crossover game to Walther Christian and a 59-32 MSC Blue Division contest to Illiana Christian.

“We’ve been doing well,” said AT-Willowbrook coach Neil Wahlgren. “Hinsdale South was very close and exciting. We were able to pull it out.”

Wahlgren said the team received key performances from its 500 freestyle swimmers and members of the 200 and 400 relay teams.

“The guys worked together and were able to achieve this great feat,” he said.

Jack Burns won both the 100 and 200 for AT-Willowbrook. “Jack also was in those last two relays that won,” the coach pointed out.

Mikey Strycharz also was a busy swimmer. He won the 50 and 500 freestyle races and was part of the 400 freetyle relay team that won and the medley relay team that took second place.

Jake Roucka won the 100 butterfly. “Hinsdale got us in the breaststroke, but we took second and third there, which helped us,” said Wahlgren. “Lucas Walsh helped us in the breaststroke and in the fly as well.”

Evan Zimmerman won the 100 backstroke and swam in three relays.

“Hinsdale was co-conference champs last year with Downers

South,” said Wahlgren. “We beat Downers South earlier this season.

Hinsdale was a big meet for us and we were able to pull it off. It came down to the last few events. We trailed at the beginning of the meet.

I thought the 500 freestyle was the turning point in the meet. We were leading going into the 200 free relay and we got first and third there and that helped with the lead. The 400 free relay helped give us a better advantage. These guys are coming together as a team. They are making sure they are completing each race and not slowing down. They are going through and picking up the pace whether it’s that second 50 or toward the end of the race or going hard into their walls. They are using that as motivation against other teams.”

Wahlgren lauded the season-long performances of Burns and Strycharz.

“They are our top two guys,” he said. “Without them, we’d be struggling a little bit. Jack Burns has really stepped it up of late.”

Jack Wentworth also came up big against Hinsdale South where he dropped 24 seconds off his time in the 500.

“He took third in that race and that helped us with points,” said Wahlgren. “That 500 is where it turned.

It’s when we took over and ended up finishing things and winning the meet.”

The 200 free relay team consisted of Zimmerman, Eric Hoda, Jacob Grygo and Burns, while the 400 team had Zimmerman, Grygo, Strycharz and Burns.

AT-Willowbrook’s meet at Morton will be the team’s senior night.

AT-Willowbrook does not have a home competition pool and swims all meets and invitationals on the road.

“The Morton meet will be fun. The guys are looking forward to it,” said Wahlgren. “If we win it will be fun because we’ll have gone undefeated in the conference and it’s senior night.”

AT-Willowbrook also recently took second out of 12 teams at the Chicago Little Village invitational over the holidays.

AT-Willowbrook still has invitationals at Shepard and West Chicago followed by the conference meet at Hinsdale South.

“The conference meet will be a big day for us,” said Wahlgren.

Addison Trail girls bowling team faring better Schmelter ranked sixth in West Suburban Conference

While the Addison Trail girls bowling team doesn’t have much to show for it in terms of wins, it has made strides on the lanes this season.

“We don’t have the wins, but we are getting better and we are improving,” said Addison Trail coach Steve Gilliam. “We have some individuals who are doing well.”

Molly Schmelter is one of those individuals. Through late last week, Schmelter ranked sixth in the West

Suburban Conference in average.

“Molly has been very consistent,” said Gilliam. “She is averaging 185 in conference. Most games she’s around 180. She’s in that range all the time. It’s not like she bowls a 220 one game and then a 160 the next game. She’s been very good for us.”

Gilliam also lauded the work of the team’s other senior Kaitlin Martinez. “Kaitlin is bowling really well,” said Gilliam. “Kaitlin is doing a better job of picking up spares and throwing better first balls.”

But improvement has been seen throughout the roster. “We have some other juniors and sophomores who are working and getting better,” said Gilliam. “We have some young-

er girls who are getting over the nervousness of playing on the varsity.

They are picking up more spares and when they do that their scores will go up.”

Schmelter recently placed 25th at a competitive tournament hosted by Prospect. “Being 25th at a 36-team tournament is sort of like being in the sectional with all these top teams,” said Gilliam. “She was Top 25 and that is very good. She knows what she needs to do to move onto sectionals and get into the state tournament.”

IC Catholic Prep plays crosstown neighbor Timothy Christian in a Metro Suburban Conference game Friday. That game also will feature a 10-year reunion of IC Catholic Prep’s first boys basketball team that advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the state playoffs. Tyrrell was an assistant coach on that team.

“We’ll recognize them at halftime and hopefully as many guys as possible can come back for the reunion,” said Tyrrell.

IC Catholic Prep was 3-2 in MSC Blue Division games through late last week.

Author, American studies scholar to give MLK lecture Dear Martin: How Do We Build Democracy In An Anti-Democratic Age? On Wednesday, Feb. 8 beginning at 4 p.m., Randal Maurice Jelks will present this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. lecture at Elmhurst College.

Jelks is an awarding-winning professor of American studies, African, and African American studies at the University of Kansas. His program, Dear Martin: How Do We Build Democracy in an Anti-democratic Age?, will

be held in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Professor Jelks is the author of two popular books, co-editor of the journal American Studies, and is an ordained member of the Presbyterian clergy.
