Newly formed ‘Save Lufkin Pool’ group begins protest Village points to ‘in motion’ campaign for new pool, rec center

FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT

During its Nov. 6, 2017, meeting, the Village Board of Trustees voted not to fund repairs for Lufkin Pool. This meant the 60-plus year-old facility could not open for the 2018 swimming season. “Sorry, Villa Park,” said Village President Al Bulthuis after the vote. In response, a group of residents

recently created a Facebook page - ‘Save Lufkin Pool’ - as of press time the page had 114 members, and seeks to persuade the Board to reverse their decision on closing and demolishing Lufkin Pool. Posts by members of the group call into question the timing of the vote, noting the agenda listing was made available to the public just three days before the Nov. 6 vote on

funding repairs. Those repairs, estimated in the $350,000 to $450,000 range, could suffice to keep Lufkin viable for up to 10 years. However, Greg Gola, Director of Parks and Recreation, said there were no guarantees due to the age of the facility. Bulthuis noted during discussions about the repairs that constructing a new pool or rec center would be the ideal solution, but could take anoth-

er 10 years due to a lack of funding.

Bulthuis issues letter to residents A letter from Village President Albert Bulthuis dated Dec. 29, 2017 and sent to residents along with their water bills begins, “Lufkin Pool will not re-open in 2018.” The letter also indicates plans are underway to demolish the buildings and pool struc-

tures and “return the area to open green space.” The Village President cited a Williams Architects study commissioned by Villa Park in 2013 that concluded both Lufkin Pool and Jefferson Pool were at the end of their useful lives. Bulthuis’ letter also announces the “Village’s desire to

Annual Chili Open comes to Sugar Creek Golf Course

A group of over 50 golfers turned out in the below-zero temperatures on Saturday, Jan. 6 to play a round of golf at the annual Chili Open held at Sugar Creek Golf Course. Pictured are two foursomes who called themselves the DLHY and FRAIT group, who have been enjoying the challenge for several years now. Despite the bitter temperatures, it was a bright and sunny day for the event, which ended in the clubhouse with homemade chili, chicken, pasta, pizza and more.
