Racecar driver Danica Patrick remains ‘Healthy Driven’ for EEH

ELMHURST — Racecar driver Danica Patrick was the featured guest at “Healthy Driven” events at Elmhurst Hospital and Edward Hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Patrick is the spokesperson for Edward-Elmhurst Health’s Healthy Driven initiative, which is designed to help people move their health forward.

At Elmhurst Hospital, Patrick took part in a panel discussion, Healthy Driven Life: Practical Advice for Busy People, in which Patrick offered tips to community leaders and Edward-Elmhurst Health system employees.

The panel also included Joe Perrino, CEO, Home Run Inn Pizza; Pam Davis, System CEO, Edward-Elmhurst Health; and Mary Lou Mastro, President & CEO, Elmhurst Hospital.

Patrick also visited with patients at the Nancy W. Knowles Cancer Center and took part in a cooking demonstration with Jim Roth, executive chef of Elmhurst Hospital’s Wildflower Cafe.

Accidents happen, but steps can be taken to prevent them

WINNEBAGO COUNTY — Unfortunately last week we all heard about a terrible accident involving a tractor with a grain wagon and a SUV on Highway 20 west of Winnebago corners.

It is important for everyone to remember that we all need to share the roads. Farmers and motorists both have the right to use the roads.

Although farm equipment will use the roads all year round, we will encounter more farm equipment in the spring as farmers are preparing the soil and planting the crops and in the fall as farmers are harvesting their crops.

Here are a few safety tips and reminders for both motorists and farmers to help prevent accidents on the roads during

harvest season. Help prevent accidents. Please stay alert, be patient, and when you see farm equipment ahead, slow down.

Motorist: Reduce speed Reduce speed when encountering farm equipment on public roads.Flashing amber lights mean “CAUTION.” Slow down Slow down when you see the Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) Emblem- the orange and red reflective triangle warns you that the tractor or combine travels at a slow rate of speed.

Keep safe distance Keep a safe distance from the farm equipment so the farmer can see you. If you can’t see his mirrors, he can’t see you!

Traffic crash injures two Pecatonica men WINNEBAGO — On Thursday, Nov. 5, at approximately 11:28 a.m., a crash occurred on US 20 in the westbound lane, a half-mile west of Winnebago Road, in Winnebago County.

A 2007 Silver Saturn Vue, driven by 29-year old Jack Eaton, of Pecatonica, collided with a John Deere tractor pulling a grain bin wagon, driven

by Daniel Satter, a 34-year old male from Pecatonica.

Mr. Eaton was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. The preliminary crash investigation indicates Mr. Eaton was headed westbound in the right lane when he rear-ended Mr Satter.

Mr. Satter was ejected from his tractor, and was then airlifted from the scene and taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, but was reported to be stable at the time.

Late race plot twists equal Goblin victory for Lagestee

When 133 cars contest 250 laps on a quarter mile track, survival is the name of the game.

Whether you are merely shooting for consistency or pacing the field looking to grab victory, the race to survive is the battle within the battle.

On Oct. 25, at the 35th annual Goblin 250 at Rockford Speedway, Schererville Indiana’s Ryan Lagestee was a model of both survival and consistency.

Making consistent laps all day while never leaving the racing surface, Lagestee found himself in the top five at the race’s halfway point. As the event wore on and attrition began to take it’s toll on the field, Lagestee slowly saw himself climb up the leader-board, until he finally saw his number at the top in the race’s final laps.

Maple Park’s Dale Markham

led the most laps in the 250-lap endurance race, first assuming the race’s top spot around lap 50. By lap 100, Markham lost the lead to Michael Brancecum Jr, who lead the field when the race hit halfway.

As the field resumed racing on lap 126, Brancecum had a lap on the rest of the field and seemed to be setting a brisk pace, until he was forced pitside with just over 100 laps to go. This would hand the lead back to Markham and place Union’s Scott Vetter in second.

Over the next 60 laps, Markham and Vetter put on a terrific show, racing one another through lapped traffic. With both cars racing closely and on the same lap, it appeared a shootout for the win was developing.

But shortly after lap 225, Vetter’s car began to slow, and the race’s runner up headed to the pits with with 20 laps remaining, putting Markham

in the drivers seat. Markham appeared to be in the right place at the right time, but 10 laps later was forced to make a late race stop, throwing the race totally up for grabs.

That’s when Lagestee was able to slip into the lead, maintaining his advantage over the final laps to take the $500 first prize. Former race winner Bob Bertolozzi, much like Lagestee, raced in the top five for most of the final 125 laps. When the checkered flag waved, Bertolozzi finished second.

Following his late-race heartbreak, Markham was able to salvage a third place finish.

Former Stone & Double T 200 winner Jay Orr finished fourth, while Tyler Griswold rounded out the top five.

Rockford’s Charlie Schork won the ‘Big Swarm’ Demo Derby, outlasting 14 other competitors. Montgomery’s Jacob Mance placed second, with Polo’s James Meador third.

Woodstock Harley-Davidson hosts memorial dedication ceremony

WOODSTOCK — On Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, the Woodstock Harley-Davidson dealership holds a dedication ceremony for its Veteran’s Memorial.

The memorial is sited close to the over-sized American Flag which the H-D dealership dedicated earlier this year.

The audience is packed with veterans for this event. The parking lot is full and cars are still arriving. This community supports our military and is ready to show it. At the proper moment, the bugler, Donald Rhodes, sounds the call and we are all welcomed to the ceremony. The Invocation is spoken and the staff of HarleyDavidson carries out the Flag and presents it to the military Color Guard. We sing the National Anthem and the Color Guard raises the flag on the flagpole. The wind this morning is causing the flag to wave proudly.

The speeches are all very powerful and moving. Lance Corporal Tim Crabb, veteran, originated the idea for this memorial, “War takes a part of your soul. This site means so much for so many. My father is just one of many who have served, In order for that symbol of freedom [the US flag] to be recognized by people around the world…” [it needs to be respected and defended as such.] It is respected by those around its base today [members of the military]. In their hands its base is solid. I extend our sincere gratitude to HarleyDavidson.”

Veteran Dustin Jackson says,

“We sometimes struggle with re-acclimation. You can question whether or not you are ever going to do something this important again. Do people even care? This shows that people do care.”

The most touching part of today’s event is the POW*MIA Memorial Table Ceremony.

The following is the basic script used for these ceremonies. There are variations in each ceremony.

Be alert for deer on Illinois roads this fall More than 15,000 motor vehicle crashes with deer statewide in 2014

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources, and Illinois State Police remind motorists that this is the time of year to be on high alert for deer on Illinois roads.

The latest statistics show that motor vehicle crashes involving deer increased slightly in Illinois last year: 15,356 crashes in 2014, compared to 15,334 crashes in 2013. There were 14,847 crashes that resulted in

property damage only in 2014, compared to 14,811 in 2013.

Despite the increases, there were fewer fatalities resulting from crashes involving deer: four fatalities in 2014, down from six fatalities in 2013. The number of injuries in motor vehicle crashes involving deer also declined, from 617 in 2013 to 570 in 2014.

On average, nearly half of all crashes involving deer in Illinois happen in October, November, and December.

Approximately 80 percent of crashes involving deer happen on rural roads at twilight or nighttime.

The top 10 counties for crashes involving deer in 2014

were: Cook 4,281 Madison 4,283 Will 4,014 Sangamon 3,945 Fulton 3,506 Peoria 340 Lake 324 Kane 319 Rock Island 290 Jackson 288 Tips for avoiding collisions with deer: • Reduce your speed near water, farm fields, and wooded areas; be prepared to stop.

• Deer will often cross roads and double back; make sure deer have moved away from the road before proceeding.

• If you see one deer, be

aware that others may be close behind.

• Alert other motorists to the presence of deer by tapping your brakes.

• Don’t swerve into traffic or off the road if you see a deer; instead, slow to a stop.

Here are some things to remember if you are involved in a motor vehicle crash with a deer: • Pull to a safe location off of the roadway.

• Be sure to turn on your emergency flashers.?• If anyone is injured or the vehicle needs to be towed, a police officer will need to respond to the scene to complete a crash report.

• If there are no injuries and the vehicle can be driven from the scene, it is likely that you can phone in the information and a crash report can be completed.

• If you are phoning in the information for the crash report, be sure you have the following information available: time of crash, location of crash, vehicle registration information, insurance information, and names and phone numbers of any passengers in the vehicle with you at the time of crash.

A driver involved in a crash with a deer may take possession of the animal.

SOUTH BELOIT — When Jon Arcouette and Shannon Barlow previously worked together for seven months at different shop, they both realized that they had the same ideas and same standards on how they wanted to run an automotive business.

Both left that shop; Jon started working out of his garage building up a clientele base, while Shannon opened up his own shop, while also working with Jon on the weekends. Both had the idea to build up a client base and when the opportunity became available, they would open up their own shop.

Both men have automotive blood running through their veins; Jon began working at the age of 16 at the family shop in Connecticut, moving to the area in 2008 when his wife’s work transferred her to the area, Shannon also began at the age of 16, so between the two of them, “There are many years of experience here!” they both agreed.

The opportunity came to open up Arcouette Automotive, located at 14440 Dearborn Ave., South Beloit, on the corner of 251 and Prairie Hill, and both decided to go in together, formally opening in March of this year.

“We both had the same standards on how we wanted to treat our customers,” owner, Jon Arcouette stated. “Time and time again, we saw the distrust of customers with their auto mechanics, and we wanted to change that.”

“Brining back that ‘small town,’ small business feel is what we are striving for,” Jon offered.

“We’ve been known to go

out at 7 o’clock in the evening to help a customer,” Shannon said. “We will do what it takes for a customer that needs help.”

Going that extra mile is a priority for Arcouette Automotive. “Whether it’s a $100 job or a $1000 job, we treat each customer the same,” Jon said.

“We like to think we go above and beyond what is usually expected from an auto shop.”

Jon, an ASC A1-A6 certified mechanic, believes in being completely honest with his customers. “Sometimes, they don’t want to hear what is actually wrong with their vehicle,” he explains. “However, we don’t want anyone to ever question our integrity. We won’t suggest work that doesn’t need to be done.”

Doing business by the philosophy of doing what is right to ‘earn your business, and your family’s business, and your friend’s business’ is how Arcouette Automotive has built up their reputation for doing quality work, at affordable prices, and being honest and fair in their dealings.

“You can’t buy a good reputation,” Jon offered. “Word of mouth has been our best referral.”

A full service automotive shop, Arcouette Automotive provides engine repairs, brakes, exhaust, HVAC, steering/suspension issues, electrical diagnostic/drivability issues, drive trains, tire repairs, cooling systems, tune-ups and towing services.
