“Lena is a small town and small towns need people willing to do that little extra to help others. The Lions club is an organization that does that, and we look for others in our area that do the same,” Crichton said. “Dr. Tawfik ran his practice in Lena for more than 35 years and is a very respected physician.

People trusted his judgment.

“Lena was very fortunate that Dr. Tawfik and his family chose Lena to call home.”

Tawfik is modest about the honor, saying he never expected such recognition.

“I feel very honored and humbled by their selection,” he said.

The parade, expected to draw about 100 units, will

start at noon Saturday at the Old School Apartments.

Legislative ethics bill in doubt as deadline looms

The House sponsor of a long-debated ethics bill that failed in the House last week said she will bring it up for another vote if lawmakers come back to the Capitol within a 15-day constitutional window in which such an action would be allowed.

But House Republicans who pulled their support from the bill say it’s time to go back to the drawing

board.

Senate Bill 539, the bipartisan negotiated ethics bill, initially came up for vote after 1 a.m. June 1, with House Republicans stating a number of concerns and calling it “watered down” before it passed the House 113-5 and the Senate 59-0.

A celebration of community The Lena Lions Fall Festival is a celebration of community and it seems fitting that Dr. Shokry Tawfik will be honored in the festival parade on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Tawfik retired recently after 37 years as a family physician at the FHN Family Healthcare Center-Lena.

He will serve as the parade grand marshal, passing by the Oak Street home where he and his family lived for years. They often invited friends from church over to enjoy the annual parade, he said.

“My family and myself feel greatly blessed to be part of Lena and the surrounding community,” he said.

It seems the feeling is mutual, which is why the Lions chose the longtime doctor as

Pearl City ag students receive scholarships

Curt Miller, chairman of the Stephenson County 4-H and Extension Foundation, recently announced Marianna Brenner and Isabella Kostallari of Pearl City as the winners of the R.C. Miller Scholarship for the 2021-’22 year.

The R. C. Miller Scholarship was established and funded by the late R. C. Miller, a local leader in agri-business.

He started the scholarship program to encourage and support Stephenson County residents pursuing degrees in agriculture with an emphasis in conservation. The Stephenson County Extension and 4-H Foundation is responsible for the scholarship administration. Brenner and Kostallari will each receive $1,000 to use toward educational expenses. Brenner, above left, will be studying agribusiness at Iowa State University and Kostallari is studying “The Buddy Holly Story” the golden days of rock ’n’ roll, animal sciences, pre-veterinary medicine at Iowa State University. Scholarship recipient works toward dual degrees McKenzie Riemer is the recipient of the 2021’22 scholarship from the Stephenson Soil and Water Conservation District.

Riemer, of Orangeville, attends the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and plans to graduate in December with bachelor’s degrees in agricultural business and animal science. She plans to seek fulltime employment and pursue a master’s degree.

During her last semester at UW-Platteville, Riemer plans to work on her certifications for burning and artificial insemination.

McKenzie was the team captain of the UWPlatteville volleyball team, first vice president and president of Sigma Alpha professional agriculture sorority, president of Alpha Zeta Honors Society and a member of the National Honors Society of Leadership and Success. In her high school years at Orangeville, she was active in FFA and 4-H.The scholarship fund was established through the generosity of the John Phillips family, the Steve Fest family and the Sheldon Toelke family, according to a news release. Radio personality Christopher Knauer, aka Chris O’Brian, will be featured at a Sept.

19 presentation at the Stockton Heritage Museum.

Knauer will talk about his autobiography, “On the Air: My Life and 41+ Years in Small Market Radio,” in the free session that begins at 2 p.m.

Knauer grew up in Elizabeth and then moved to Stockton, where he graduated from Stockton High School in 1967. Knauer then served in the military before beginning his lifelong career in broadcasting.

Grief and time reveal inner strength

When my husband first left this earth, people told me I was strong. I recoiled from this label because at the time I felt anything but strong.

I think maybe I’ve since changed my mind.

Please allow me this grace. If grief has taught me one thing, it’s that the person you believe yourself to be changes on a daily basis (sometimes more often than that.) You might think the sky is blue one day and purple the other. One moment you might catch a glimpse of happiness and the next your world is crumbling from within.

On that note, maybe I am strong. Or maybe courageous, or brave. Or maybe all three. They have similar, but varying definitions:

Strong: “Able to withstand great force or pressure.”

Brave: “Ready to face or endure danger or pain.”

Courage: “Strength in the face of pain or grief.”

Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency announces the start of the PY22 Energy Assistance Program Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency, as administrator of the Home Energy Assistance Program in Stephenson and Jo Daviess Counties, is pleased to announce that funds are available to assist income-eligible households with their natural gas, propane, and electric bills, and LIHEAP eligible homeowners with furnace assistance.

The program will begin September 1, 2021 for all income-eligible households. Applications will be taken on a first-come first-served basis through May 31, 2022. There will be no priority groups this program year.

All households in need are encouraged to apply. Propane customers are encouraged to apply when the program opens in September to take advantage of lower propane prices.

Applicants may apply for a DVP payment or the PIPP program. The Direct Vendor Payment (DVP) provides a one-time benefit payment for income eligible households to gas or propane and electric utilities and for reconnection assistance.

Applicants with ComEd and /or Nicor Gas as utility providers may have the option of choosing the Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) instead of the DVP. The PIPP program is a bill payment program that assists eligible customers by paying a monthly state benefit while the customer pays a monthly payment based on a percentage of their household income. PIPP applications will be taken on a first-come first served basis until March 31, 2022 or until NICAA has reached maximum capacity of households for the program.

yourself for the day ahead, then I might be brave.

If finding new joy, from within yourself, because that’s where it was all along, constitutes courage, then I’m currently at the top of my class.

Strong isn’t muscles. It isn’t forgetting or ignoring or denying.

Bravery isn’t acting the part. It isn’t swords or shields or armor.

Courage isn’t a misinformed cowardly lion.

It isn’t something you set out to do or be when your alarm clock rings at 6 a.m.

Strong is the will to believe in the future — to believe you can create a new future, despite it all.

Bravery is letting down

your armor and attending your first business meeting and breaking down in tears because you aren’t afraid to let people see the real you and your real emotions.

Courage is answering the door, or the phone. It is getting out of bed every morning, even when you’ve been up most of the night and early morning hours, unable to turn your mind off from “just thinking.”

When you are grieving, people want to say something to take the pain away. They want to help.

Sometimes they tell you that you are strong, or brave or courageous. I used to take offense at this because it seemed so far from the truth.

How could I be strong

when I didn’t know if I had the will to exist? How could I be brave when my tears seemed overflowing? How could I be courageous when I didn’t know about tomorrow, much less today?

Good questions. I don’t have the answers. It’s been less than a year for me, nine months (or 41 weeks or 288 days, give or take) — if we are counting. And I still don’t quite know what I’m doing.

Well, that’s not all true.

I know I am living and breathing each day. I know I have joy in my heart.

I’ve come to believe what I am doing is nothing short of heroic: to withstand, to endure, to face the future, to find purpose, to

continue moving forward, to continuing loving and living.

I am trying. It’s all I can do. It’s all any of us can do.

And, if you will allow me, I want to amend my earlier statement (in an earlier column) about not being strong.

I am strong. I am brave. I am courageous. I might even be heroic. I’m guessing these very same things could be said about you.

Thank you for pointing this out to me, even before I was ready to hear it.

Afghan exit calls for pause, prayer

The 20-year commitment by the U.S. government to the people of Afghanistan ended this past week, although not in a way that anyone would have hoped to see our assistance end.

As the last transport left Kabul, I joined with fellow Americans in breathing a sigh of relief, strained and troubled by the allies and assets we left behind. It has been both heartbreaking and heartwarming to be reminded of our role as the leader of the Free World as well as the shortcomings in fulfillment of compassion and empathy for those who helped along the way.

Joining my fellow Americans, I have done a lot of praying over the past weeks. I have prayed for our soldiers State Rep. in harm’s Andrew way around Chesney the world. I have prayed for their wellbeing, both physical as well as emotional and mental, as we have watched images of Afghan moms and dads handing over their babies to American troops in hopes that their infant children could be saved, even if there was

insufficient room in our hearts and our transports for many of them as parents.

I have prayed for the religious missionaries and aid workers, and the men, women and children still in harm’s way. Many will pay a terrible price for their stand for a better life for their children.

They deserve our prayers.

I’ve prayed for those who helped the cause of freedom and hoped for democracy only to see that that cry must carry forward in their hearts only, for now, in hopes the next generation takes up the struggle. I have prayed for those persecuted because of religion, gender or persuasion.

The coming years will be harder than we can possibly imagine for them.

Like many Americans, I have felt hopeless about the situation and have resigned myself to send up my heavy heart in prayer to God and ask for Him to bring healing to His people. We need God’s grace more than ever, as our hearts ache for the images we bear witness.

Twenty years ago, when this war started, I was early in my college days and not far out of my days at Eastland High School. I watched classmates and friends sign up for military service and go off to war following that cheap sucker punch that came America’s way 20 years ago this week. I know many who enlisted never made it home.

Their blood may have spilled on soil over 7,000 miles away from here, but the sacrifice has forever imprinted our hearts. They will live on in our memories and their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

We are grateful, still. Not for the way it started, nor for the way it ended. We are grateful for what this has reminded us about ourselves.

For the past decade, the public debate in this country has been simply about ending this war. Lost in the public discourse have been the people of Afghanistan.

Through 20 years of turmoil, lives were lived. Many of those lives would have been markedly worse if not for the efforts of the United States of America.

While too many of the images we see on our televisions these days remind weary eyes of the images seen following the Vietnam War, let us dedicate ourselves to ensuring the heroes who helped evacuate as many allies, as many of the women, children and Afghan refugees as they possibly could, receive a heroes’ welcome home.

While a trail of blood was left on the way out, it was the blood of Americans and Afghans who wanted nothing more than a better life for the people of Afghanistan. It was shed tragically and with a humanity that has refocused Americans to remember the people we went there to protect. Please join me in continuing to pray for those who will get that chance to start a new life out of Afghanistan as well as those still striving for a new day within. God, please protect your people and grant us your peace.

MAYLENE K. CRAIN Maylene K. Crain, age 97, of Warren, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, in Monroe, Wisconsin.

She was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Wards Township to Helmer and Elsie (Hess) Hammer.

She married John Crain Sr. on July 3, 1943, in Freeport, Illinois. Maylene worked for Honeywell for over 20 years and then worked various jobs. She bowled for 48 years and attended 26 national tournaments. Maylene also enjoyed bingo, knitting, crocheting and reading.

four children, Kathleen (Ivan) Guenzler of Stockton, John Jr. (Charla) Crain of Pearl City, Jeannie (Jack) Reel of Lena and James (Mary Lynn) Crain of Summerville, South Carolina; 13 grandchildren, Tina Brinkmeier of Warren, Scott (Judi) Guenzler of Davis, Valerie (Kevin) Dunlavey of Browntown, Wisconsin, Jennifer Reel (Chris McMil-

lan) of Austin, Texas, Tim Reel (Tami Bidlingmaier) of Winslow, Mark Crain of Freeport, Lisa (Joe) Ernst of Zwingla, Iowa, Debbie and Cindy Retel of Chicago, Rachel Crain of Freeport, Brandon (Traci) Crain of Evansville, Wisconsin, Jason Crain of Atlanta and Christina (Brad) Neubert of Atlanta; 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; daughter-inlaw, Judy (Dave) Schopf; sisters-in-law, Judy Hammer and Shirley Hammer; special friends, Randy Leehan and Kathy Hicks, both of War-

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

There is no memorial fund established but if you wish to honor her through a donation, the family suggests the Warren Ambulance Service.

MERVIN LOBDELL Mervin “Johnny” Lobdell, 87, of Lena, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 2, 2021, after an extended illness. He was born in the Lobdell farmhouse on Jan. 8, 1934, to John and Leta (Kappenman) Lobdell and was the youngest of four boys. Johnny graduated from Lena High School in 1951, but his best memories were the eight years at Damascus School, close to the farm. He would walk, ride his bike or even get a ride with his dad in the horse-drawn cutter in the winter. His favorite teacher was the one he had for six years, Helen Bennett. He also said he learned so much about farming in the agriculture classes he had in high school. After high school, he learned more about farming when he worked with his dad and with his older brother, Allen, at his gravel business.

In March of 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Verla Liebergesell.

J o h n n y then volunteered for the Army in the Korean War in 1954 and trained as a surveyor, first stationed in Colorado Springs and then in Korea. He and Verla returned to the Lobdell farm in 1956 and began farming. Johnny was very passionate about the Lobdell family farm. He spent his entire life working on it with his wife, children, and grandchildren; planning to improve it, and then later, planning to make sure it continued to operate … even up until his very last day, offering advice on the daily operations. He was very happy to watch this year’s crops and said multiple times that “these were the best crops he had ever seen in all of his fields combined and no floodHonoring the ing!”

ing his friends at Lane View, playing euchre, and for the past months, visiting with his friends, who would stop at the house almost daily. We want to especially thank Bill Hull for being a true friend to dad, stopping every day, sometimes twice a day, to talk or check on him, and to bring wonderful vegetables from his garden.

Mervin is survived by his four children, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, Murry and Julie Lobdell and their family, Andrew, Amy, Aubrey, Avery, and Adrienne Lobdell; Joe Lobdell; Tom, Heidi, Levi and Rylee Lobdell; and Cody, Lana Adelyn and Camden Haas; Kayla Lobdell and her family, Wes, Jenn, Louis and Bobby Morovic; Matt Morovic and his children, Marley and Emerson; Aaron, Kelsey and Reid McFarlane; and Haley Pentecost; Jay and Karlyn Kempel and their family, Jarmemory ed and Sara, Jason and Justin Kempel; and Kelly and Jan-

Heather, Lisa and Sue provided excellent care and had endless patience for “the boss,” which enabled him to stay in his home. The family would like to express sincere thanks to the members of FHN Hospice for the excellent, loving care they gave to Johnny.

Visitation for both Johnny and Verla was held Sunday, Sept. 5, at Leamon’s Funeral Home in Lena.

Cremation rites have been accorded and a private family service and burial will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. Sean Huguenin will be officiating the service.

A memorial has been established in Johnny’s memory for the Lena-Winslow FFA program.

Last week’s Little Blackhawks honorees were recognized by classroom teachers and Stockton Elementary School Principal Casey Downey for following the “Blackhawk Way.”

St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pearl City will hold the September Community Grace Meal from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19.

The menu will be Swedish meatballs over noodles, peas and carrots, orange Jello with mandarin oranges and pudding. The meal will be curbside pick-up only.

Even with posh lifestyle, Obama is a good man By

—and good fortune. In the run up to the 2004 Senate race, rather unexpectedly, both wide-open primary and general election races presented themselves.

Then, come the Democratic primary, the megabucks front-runner was accused of battering his wife, and his campaign collapsed. Barack moved to the head of the line, and won the nomination.

In the general election campaign, the highly attractive GOP nominee saw his divorce settlement exposed, rich with sexual misadventures, which forced him to withdraw. His replacement was an outof-state Black man, a kind of minstrel in reverse, who became a joke. Voila. Barack enters the U.S. Senate.

I belabor the above a bit simply to make the point that lady luck played possibly key roles in Obama’s success.

Who knows? Without that, Barack might today be but a foundation president, not even on the invite list for parties of the high-andmighty at Martha’s Vineyard.

But then, I realized that buying the summer place on the island made good sense.

First, the property probably appreciated in value the day he inked the purchase.

After all, there are today billionaires for whom eightfigure trophy homes are but trifles. This investment of his will prove valuable to his daughters’ inheritance.

Second, Barack tells us he needs to raise hundreds of millions for his presidential library and museum in Chicago. (Why it takes hundreds of millions, I know not.) So, and I’m serious, his palatial summer place becomes a perfect place to host his fellow nouveau riche overnight. They would become easy marks for seven-figure, tax deductible donations to the Obama museum. (I am sure “old money” folks would sniff at Barack’s raising money for a monument to himself as but an example of newcomer tackiness. But, hey, the old money types inherited their wealth, so why should they be so uppity?)

I come back to my point that Barack is a good man.

So, I am hoping he will make his new museum a testament, not only to himself, but also

to an America where a fellow from the wrong side of the tracks can still make it to the top.

As for the $12 million summer place and his 600 closest friends: I was more

comfortable in America, in my lifetime, when Harry Truman drove Bess in the family car from the White House back to Independence, Missouri, after his service to his country (by the way,

stopping overnight at a motel on the outskirts of downstate Decatur). Those days are, I fear, gone, forever.

Barack Obama recently purchased a $12 million summer place on Martha’s Vineyard and planned to host 600 “swells” there for his 60th birthday, until the resurgent pandemic shrunk his party numbers.

I thought to myself: Come on, Barack, do you really need an over-the-top mansion on an island playground for the rich and famous, strictly separated from the hoi polloi who put you in the White House? And 600 at a party, from George Clooney to Oprah! I can’t imagine there could be any memorable conversations, as guests jostled for wine and canapes.

The sole purpose of the gathering was obviously to see and be seen, to validate one’s social standing.

Let me stipulate that, politics aside, Barack is a good man who wants to do right by his country.

After all, as a newbie president in 2009, he and his administration took strong action that prevented a national, probably global, economic collapse.

(Unfortunately, after the fact he failed to prosecute the criminals on Wall Street who knowingly sold toxic mortgages to unsuspecting investors.)

My acquaintanceship with Obama goes back to the late 1990s, when he was thinking about Illinois politics, and I was still an expert of sorts on Illinois budgeting and taxation. Barack would attend sessions at which I was on the panelists’ dais, holding forth. We came to chat after these sessions. A quick learner, Barack was soon himself among the panelists.

Later, when I was teaching American politics at the University of Illinois and Barack was a state senator, I would take my students to Mr. Lincoln’s hometown for a day at the Capitol.

Barack would always give my students more of his time than we deserved. In his charming, intelligent, witty way (I’m a Kenyan from Kansas, he would introduce himself), he explained how things worked. My students adored him.

I still recall standing with Barack at a street corner outside the Union League Club in Chicago, after one of our panel discussions.

“Should I run for the U.S. Senate, Jim?” I am sure he was planning to do so, and that he was just stroking me, yet the memory allows me to reflect.

Democrats pass new legislative maps after contentious debate

Ultimately, though, the new redistricting plan passed both chambers strictly along party lines – 73-43 in the House; 40-17 in the Senate.

Afterwards, the reform advocacy group CHANGE Illinois, which has long advocated for an independent redistricting commission to redraw maps every 10 years, issued a statement condemning the process.

“Drawing district maps in locked back rooms yet again, Illinois lawmakers underscored their utter disregard for the will of the people and for the bedrock democratic

principles of open government by and for the people,” the group’s executive director, Madeleine Doubek, said in a statement. “Gov. Pritzker said he wanted maps that reflect the state’s rich diversity. These maps fall far short of that request and should be rejected by him. Failing that, we hope the courts will force the correction of lawmakers’ callous political mapping calculations.”

Democratic leaders had called the special session shortly after the Aug. 12 release of official, detailed data from the 2020 U.S. Census that showed the maps they approved in May, and which Pritzker signed into

law, were significantly out of balance and would likely be held unconstitutional.

Two federal lawsuits were filed challenging those maps – one by legislative Republican leaders, and another by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, or MALDEF. Those cases are before a threejudge panel in federal court in Chicago.

Lawmakers crafted the earlier maps using population estimates from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, arguing that it was the “best data available at the time.” It also enabled Democrats to argue that they met the June 30

deadline in the Illinois Constitution for the legislature to approve new maps, thus avoiding sending the work to a bipartisan commission where Republicans would have a 50-50 chance of controlling the process.

Republicans, however, argue that the maps approved in May were unconstitutional and, therefore, not “effective” by June 30, and they are seeking to force the appointment of a bipartisan commission.

Democrats in the General Assembly pushed through a new set of legislative maps during a one-day special session Aug. 31, although the process they used sparked the ire of Republicans and voting rights advocates alike.

If accepted by Gov. JB Pritzker, as they are expected to be, the new maps would replace those adopted in May, which were passed without the benefit of official 2020 U.S. Census data. But they will also have to pass muster with a federal court, where two lawsuits are pending, and possibly the Illinois Supreme Court.

The plan adopted the night of Aug. 31 was actually the third draft of a redistricting plan that had been introduced in the span of less than 48 hours. The first was formally released the afternoon of Aug. 30 and was the subject of a contentious public hearing that night. A second, amended version was introduced the morning of Aug. 31, barely one hour before the start of a hearing in the House Redistricting Committee, and that plan was changed slightly again just before the House came into session to debate the package.

“I’m just going to reiterate what I’ve been hearing from thousands of people over the last several months. We need at least 30 days to review this map,” the Rev. Robin Hood, of the Chicago-based United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations, or UCCRO, said during morning hearing Aug. 31. “It would be unfair to us if we didn’t have the time to get the map out to all our people and make a decision based on expedience.”

Hood and other advocates testified virtually during a hearing that was originally scheduled for 10 a.m., but which had to be postponed because the bill containing the new proposal, House Amendment 2 to Senate Bill 927, wasn’t released until just minutes before that time.

The committee also heard from representatives of the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and the Decalogue Society of Lawyers, a group that advocates for Jewish communities in Illinois, both of which urged lawmakers to allow more time for the public to review the latest proposal.

The bulk of the 1,269page bill is made up of lists of census block numbers, townships, wards and precincts that define each proposed House and Senate district. It was accompanied

by a separate resolution explaining how the districts were drawn.

The Aug. 31 morning hearing followed one held the evening of Aug. 30, during which several advocacy groups complained about getting short notice of the meeting and little time to review the proposal.

Common Cause Illinois, a political reform advocacy group, issued a statement Aug. 30 saying it would boycott the hearing out of protest for the way in which lawmakers were conducting the redistricting process.

“Since the beginning, we’ve pleaded with lawmakers to keep the redistricting process open, transparent, and accessible to no avail,” the group’s executive director, Jay Young, said in a statement. “This latest, last-minute hearing provides almost no notice to the public. The new maps will be released less than a day before lawmakers vote on them. It’s shameful, and our organization refuses to add any legitimacy to such an undemocratic process.”

But State Rep. Lisa Hernandez, D-Cicero, who chaired the House committee, defended the process during debate on the House floor.

“The House and Senate Democrats worked tirelessly to bring stakeholders and communities from across the state together for their input,” she said. “Fifty hearings in the spring, nine hearings this August, multiple ways to testify and submit recommendations, a public mapping portal to submit maps. Did everyone get everything they wanted? No. But everyone was heard. Redistricting is a complex exercise with many competing interests and priorities.”

Republicans, however, complained that the web portal Democrats had set up to allow people to submit their own proposals actually didn’t work and many individuals were unable to use it. They also complained that the final maps brought to the floor did not reflect the concerns that many communities had raised, but instead were drawn to protect the political interests of the Democratic majorities.

“We’ve had members say what a great process this has been, because we’ve had so many different hearings,” said Rep. Ryan Spain, R-Peoria. “These are hearings that have included locked doors, and no one showing up at all, other than our dedicated Republican spokesperson, and other members of the Republican side of the aisle. This is not transparency. This is not

Pearl City students garner scholarships to continue education Officials at the Pearl City Education Foundation recently announced the recipients of upperclassman scholarships for the 2021-’22 college year: Nicki Adolph, Burgundy Barklow, Jaryd Breece, Mackenzie Endress, Zander Paul Endress, Brooke Hass, Gwen Heimerdinger, Hailey E. Johnson, Isabella Kostallari, Zach Lieb, Andrew Lorig, Kayla Niehaus, Alayna M. Palmer, Isabel Pena,

The foundation became the administrator of the upperclassman scholarship program in 2015. Since then, more than $70,000 has been

awarded to more than 120 recipients. The program is designed for Pearl City students who have successfully completed their first year of college or vocational school, and are going on to their second, third or fourth year of advanced schooling as fulltime students. A maximum of three upperclassman scholarships may be awarded to any one person over the threeyear period.

The not so skinny cook

“Oh, what a relief it is …”

I’m not sure what commercial that is the catch phrase for (the product could be something inappropriate for publication, but it is true). Didn’t we finally get some beautifully cool weather? Everyone is breathing sighs of relief, and it helps our electric bills too.

I might have mentioned that if you planted tomatoes at the right time, you have a ton of them. They are so flavorful, and I haven’t had a split one yet. So we have some more tomato recipes this week in addition to another seasonal vegetable, and some good desserts.

Pasta and Brussels Sprouts

tomato flavored olive oil Salt and black pepper ½ C. shredded Monterey Jack cheese 8 t. grated Parmesan cheese Thyme leaves for garnish Preheat broiler on high with rack 6 inches from element.

Coat a baking sheet with nonstick spray.

Drizzle cut sides of tomatoes with oil; season with salt and pepper. Top tomato half with 1½ t. Monterey Jack cheese and ½ t. Parmesan cheese. Place under broiler and broil until cheese is melted —about two minutes.

Fresh Tomato and Chicken Pasta Bake

pasta, cooked according to pkg. directions and drained 1½ C. heavy whopping cream 1 C. shredded mozzarella cheese In a colander, toss together tomatoes and 1 t. salt. Place in sink, and let stand for 30 minutes. Gently shake colander to remove excess moisture from tomatoes.

Preheat the oven to 350.

Spray a 9-by-13 baking dish with cooking spray. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; cook until onion is softened, about four minutes. Add chicken and cook until lightly browned, three to four minutes. Stir in tomatoes, basil, oregano, pepper and remaining 1½ t. salt; cook until tomatoes are heated through.

Remove from heat and stir in pasta and cream. Pour mixture into prepared pan. Sprinkle with cheese. Loosely cover with foil. Bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake about 10 minutes more. Let stand for 15 minutes before serving.

Garnish with basil if desired.

Ranger Cookies

Last week we had pretzel cookies, and someone suggested that I should have Ranger Cookies in the column because school is starting. These cookies are easy to make and most kids like them.

They are great for lunches and an-after school snack. It is an old recipe that sometimes we forget to make. ¾ C. regular rolled oats ½ C. butter, softened ½ C. packed brown sugar ½ C. sugar 1 egg 1 t. vanilla 1 C. flour ½ t. baking powder ½ t. baking soda ¼ t. salt 1 C. Rice Krispies ¼ C. glazed peanuts (like Beer Nuts) chopped Preheat the oven to 350.

Spread oats on a baking sheet.

Bake until lightly browned, about eight minutes. In a large bowl, beat butter with a mixer on medium for 30 seconds.

Add brown and regular sugars; beat until light and fluffy.

Beat in egg and vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture and mix well. Fold in toasted oats, Rice Krispies and peanuts.

Brussels sprouts are in season, and many people are looking for ways to cook them. This dish combines this unique vegetable with pasta.

Try this good and healthy way to eat Brussels sprouts.

2 eggs ¾ C. grated Parmesan cheese 8 oz. whole-wheat spaghetti 2 T. olive oil 8 oz. Brussels sprout leaves, separated 5 slices bacon, sliced 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 t. salt ½ t. pepper In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs and ½ C. Parmesan. Set aside. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the spaghetti until al dente, about eight minutes.

Drain and reserve ½ C. of the pasta water.

While the pasta is cooking, pour the oil into a skillet and cook over high heat until sizzling. Add the Brussels sprouts and stir-fry for five minutes or until the leaves are lightly charred. Remove the sprouts from the skillet and set aside. Using the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and cook the bacon until browned and crispy, about six to eight minutes. Do not drain the pan. Stir in the garlic and cook about one minute more.

Reduce the heat to low.

Working quickly, stir in the cooked spaghetti and egg mixture and gently toss to combine; season with salt and pepper. Add the reserved pasta water, one tablespoon at a time until you reach a desired sauce consistency. Fold in the charred Brussels sprouts

Regional art loop gets national exposure Members of tri-state artist group All River Road Talent (ARRT) have announced that their Scenic Art Loop Map has been selected for presentation at The Radical Rural National Summit later this month in Keene, New Hampshire. Radical Rural builds sustainability and success for rural life and places by building a network that connects people to each other and to new ideas.

“Radical Rural considers that arts are an expression of our cultural roots, our reality today and our understanding of what may happen tomorrow, and, as such, are vital to the health of communities,” according to a news release.

“The importance of adequate funding and that these funds represent the diaspora of the individuals in these communities and beyond feeds our sense of belonging, understanding and social development. The arts can also be an intricate part of economic development.”

The 2018 Radical Rural summit drew more than 500 registrants from 24 states.

The 2019 gathering expanded to more than 600 attendees.

Final thoughts Everyone is scurrying around and getting ready for the fall festival this weekend. On my street the lawns are being mowed and things picked up. I live on the parade route, so we like to put our best foot forward if we have lived here a long time.

I am hoping the Lions club will have good weather. I think there is an air of excitement because we couldn’t have it last year. We have lost several of our community leaders in the last two years, and a younger group is having to step up to the plate.

I wish all the people and organizations well as we prepare for a safe and exciting weekend. Hopefully the sky

and heavens will cooperate.

On the local front, I did drive around the beautiful Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Park. It opened last Wednesday. The roads are beautiful; there are actually two lanes with stripes and everything.

It is mowed and ready to go for visitors. There were campers in the campground and parking lots ready for cars. There is actually more water than I thought there would be. Take a ride or a walk around one of the most beautiful natural parks in Illinois. It really is pretty and pristine.

The new law will require 911 call center operators to coordinate with the mobile mental and behavioral health services that are being established through the Division of Mental Health, which is also establishing regional advisory committees in each Emergency Medical Services region.

Pritzker has signed more than 570 bills thus far and vetoed a handful.

The governor has 60 days from when he received the bills from the General Assembly to either sign or veto them, after which time period the bill becomes law even without his signature.

For the bills that are vetoed, lawmakers will return in the fall to consider overrides or acceptance of the governor’s changes.

Most of the remaining 82 bills were sent to him at the end of June. Below are a few of the bills he has acted on in recent days.

Other bill action • Sex education: Pritzker signed Senate Bill 818, which creates a new “personal health and safety” curriculum for grades K-5, and a “sexual health education” curriculum for grades 6-12. The bill received resistance from Republican lawmakers and religious groups for its “culturally appropriate” guidelines, including education on gender identities, different types of families, sexual orientation, consent and a woman’s options during pregnancy.

Parents can opt their students out of the coursework without penalty, and each individual school district may determine whether it will teach sex education. If a district offers the subject, the curriculum must use all or part of the curriculum established by the bill.

The actual statewide curriculum would be developed by the Illinois State Board of Education by Aug. 1, 2022.

But many of the guidelines contained in the statute require that sex ed curricula be aligned with National Sex Education Standards, an initiative by non-government organizations to provide “guidance on essential minimum core content and skills needed for sex education that is age-appropriate.”

ple, require students by the end of second grade be able to define consent, personal boundaries, child sexual abuse and how to report child sexual abuse to a trusted adult.

• Sexting education: The governor also signed House Bill 24, requiring classes that teach sex education to include an age-appropriate discussion regarding sexting. That discussion would include information on possible consequences of sharing, possessing or forwarding sexually explicit content, as well as the importance of internet safety.

• Construction transparency: Pritzker signed House Bill 253, which requires the Illinois Department of Transportation to establish and implement a transportation performance program for state projects. IDOT is also required to develop a statewide highway system asset management plan aimed at preserving and improving roadways while reducing costs. The department is instructed to develop a performance-based process for selecting which projects will be prioritized. The bill passed both the House and Senate with unanimous, bipartisan support. It applies after January 2022.

• Journalism task force: Pritzker signed Senate Bill 134, creating a Local Journalism Task Force made up of 13 individuals representing print and broadcast media, journalism schools and state and local government. The group will study communities underserved by local journalism, as well as reviewing print and digital business models, the impact of social media and how to improve news access.

It takes effect January 2022.

• Underage e-cigarette sales: Pritzker signed Senate Bills 512 and 555, prohibiting e-cigarette and vaping marketing that targets children and ensuring vape shop compliance with the state’s minimum purchasing age of 21. The law allows underage individuals to test a retailer’s compliance as part of a compliance check in conjunction with law enforcement. They will go into effect January 2022.

Your tongue can reveal information about your health Examining your tongue is a vital part of your oral exam.

The shape, color and any lesions, pain, burning, swelling or coating on your tongue not only tell your dentist a lot about your oral health, but also your overall health.

A normal, healthy tongue is moist, pink and covered with papillae — small, raised protrusions that contain taste buds. Deviations in color, which can range from pale pink to reddish-purple, can indicate such conditions as a vitamin deficiency, fever, infection or hormonal imbalance.

If the exam reveals a coating on the tongue, the color of that coating can help identify

“This training is designed to teach novice and seasoned saw operators safe use of gas-powered chain saws,” according to a news release. “All participants will be instructed in cutting and felling methods.”

The courses will consist of

classroom instruction and outside hands-on saw operation.

The Level 2 session is open only to those who have completed Level 1 any time previously and will feature more hands-on advanced tree felling techniques.

The class is limited to the first eight applicants. Attendees are asked to bring their own lunch, chain saw, leather work boots and gloves. If possible, participants should bring a safety helmet with a face shield, hearing protection and chainsaw chaps or indicate at registration that they will need these required items.

The cost is $80 per person per session. Registration will close at 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, or when classes are full, whichever comes first.

Bottom line: If you find any abnormalities in your tongue, make an appointment with your dentist to get it checked.

Make sure you bring an updated medical history, as well as a complete list of all medications, including both prescription and over-the-counter meds and any nutritional supplements that you are using.

The Blackhawks fell to the Forreston Cardinals 38-14 in week one, but Stockton Head Coach Matt Leitzen took some positives from the opening game. It appears a number of mistakes that wound up costing the Blackhawks the game came by their own hand.

“We had a decent night when you look at the yardsper-carry, even if we take out Ian’s (Broshous) long run, we were able to move the ball,” Leitzen said. “We just needed to take care of it a little better when we were on offense.”

As a team, the Blackhawks rushed for nearly 200 yards in week one. Although impressive, it was nothing compared to the four hundred and twelve yards the Forreston Cardinals put up.

After the loss, the Blackhawks turned their focus onto themselves, to work on limiting those mistakes for the future.

“We need to do a better job of limiting penalties,” the coach said. “I thought our penalties really hurt us, based on where we were on the field when they occurred.”

The Blackhawks were penalized nine times for 65 yards in week one.

(The Blackhawks would bounce back in week two, topping Eastland Pearl City 18-13.)

Week one standouts Despite the opening loss, Leitzen was still pleased with a number of his players, including senior trio Andrew Mensendike, Ian Broshous and Jamie Stocks.

“I thought Jamie Stocks played well on both sides of the ball for us,” Leitzen said.

“He is a returning lineman and provided us with some experience there.”

Stocks was a force in helping Stockton move the ball offensively, but he found himself in the middle of a number of plays on defense. With 12 total tackles and a forced fumble, Stocks was the team’s leading tackler in week one.

Mensendike and Broshous were all over the field on defense, as well. Combining for 17 total tackles, the duo had an impact on nearly every play.

“Mensendike and Broshous provide us some flexibility with what we do on defense,”

he said.

Junior linebacker Jace Phillips also was a force, as he came in second on the team in tackles with 10.

Broshous’ main impact was seen on the other side of the ball, however. He was the team’s leading rusher and had the biggest play of the night for Stockton as he took a carry 65 yards for a touchdown score, putting the Blackhawks on the board for the first time this season. Broshous finished the first game with six carries for 93 yards and the score.

It was Phillips who carried the heavy workload in week one, as he totaled 11 carries for 71 yards and a score. Phillips’ touchdown came on a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The ground attack appeared to be the only impactful way of moving the ball for Stockton, in week one. Quarterback Caleb Mammoser was just three of 10 through the air for 25 yards. Mammoser managed to spread the ball around, making completions to three different receivers in Broshous, Mensendike and Parker Luke.

Stockton will have another test ahead of them as they face off with Dakota this Friday.
