Blackhawks bounce back with dominant performance over EPC point conversion failed as the Blackhawks took a 6-0 lead that would hold until the halftime break. The Blackhawks didn’t waste much time putting up points in the second half, however. Early in the third quarter, the Blackhawks expanded their lead when Dustin Oppold rushed in for his own five-yard touchdown run. The score gave the Blackhawks a 12-0 lead with just over seven minutes left in the Justquarter.afew minutes later, Stockton took a command ing lead as Hubb broke free for his second score of the game, going 32 yards for the touchdown. Another failed point-after attempt left Stockton with a 20-0 lead, late in the third quarter. The three-score lead would hold until midway through the fourth quarter, when the Wildcats finally cracked the scoreboard. It was not the Stockton defense that gave up the shutout, however, as a blocked punt is what led to EPC’s first score of the game. Although the fourth quarter score would bring the Wildcats within 14, the Blackhawks would re main in control of the game. The Stockton offense would get those points back just a few moments later, when Ryley Schultz scam pered into the endzone on a four-yard touchdown run. The late score restored the Blackhawks’ three score lead as they went up 26-6 with just over two minutes left in regulation. While Stockton Head Coach Matt Leitzen relied on his strong defense, he used the running game to control the ball. With 51 total rushes on the night, the Blackhawks posted 249 rushing yards as a team. Hubb did a majority of the damage, rushing for 124 yards and a pair of scores on just 16 attempts. At nearly eight-yards-per-carry, Hubb was nearly a guaranteed first down every time he touched the ball in week two. Oppold also had a hefty load with 15 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown.TheStockton defense managed to spark some mo mentum by forcing a pair of turnovers in the game. Both Michael Haas and Parker Luke nabbed interceptions off the EPC quarterback which helped keep the Wild cats off the board. Colby Tucker had a solid defensive performance with four tack les, including a tackle for loss. Schultz led the Black hawks with seven total tack les on the night.

After suffering a 44-14 loss to Forreston in week one, the Stockton Black hawks were setup to face off with the Eastland-Pearl City Wildcats in week two. Both teams came into the Sept. 2 matchup with a zero in the win column and high hopes of having a bounce back performance. The Wildcats would have the benefit of being on their home field, however. Both teams took a lit tle time to get settled in as things went scoreless through the first quarter. In fact, the score did not come until there were just a couple minutes left in the second quarter, when Stockton’s Karl Hubb broke through the endzone on a five-yard touchdown run. The two-

Pritzker announces up to $100 million in grants to advance anti-violence funding in greater Illinois

livering historic levels of vi olence prevention funding to interrupt violence and keep our communities safe,” said Pritzker. “I am grateful for the thoughtful work of our Local Advisory Councils in recom mending community-specific solutions that can get at the root-causes of firearm vio lence. This funding will sup port on-the-ground work from people with the community knowledge and passion nec essary to make substantive change.”IDHS continues to accept applications for the $113 mil lion in funding made available in May for violence preven tion services in Chicago and youth development services statewide. Across funding sources, nearly $240 million in funding has already been committed to youth develop ment and violence prevention efforts statewide for fiscal years FY22, FY23, and FY24. In addition to RPSA/ARPA funding, committed efforts include ongoing funding to youth development and youth employment providers, an expansion in summer youth development services, and a unique youth engagement pi lot program through Chicago Public Schools. This new investment in Greater Illinois comes after the Office of Firearm Vio lence Prevention (OFVP) at the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) convened Local Advisory Councils (LACs) (LACs) in each of the 16 RPSA eligible municipalities to make rec ommendations to the OFVP on how to allocate violence prevention resources in their communities.Fromthese recommenda tions, OFVP designed a com prehensive Greater Illinois Funding Strategy to meet the violence prevention needs of each municipal area, taking into account local recommen dations, service provider ca pacity, and area need.

The grants announced will be awarded by the OFVP and will go to programs in Illinois municipalities with less than 1,000,000 residents that are disproportionately impacted by violence, based on a da ta-focused approach to prior itizing the highest need areas of the State. RPSA programs are specifically designed to address populations that are high risk of perpetrating or becoming victim to firearm violence.TheOFVP is releasing the $100 million in three new di rect service Notice of Fund ing Opportunities (NOFOs), available in RPSA eligible municipalities in Greater Illi nois.Violence prevention: For programs that include street intervention, victim services, case management, and other engagement and wrap around support services for those at highest risk of harming or being harmed by gun related violence.Trauma informed behav ioral health services: For programs that include mental and behavioral health inter ventions that address trauma recovery and other mental health improvements, specifi cally to mediate the high cor relation between family ad versity, trauma and violence, and subsequent involvement in gun related activity.

Agriculture celebrations at state fair Ag Day at the Illinois State Fair is an annual event that brings together some of the best and brightest in the farm and food sectors. This year’s celebration took place on Aug. 16 and included events to help connect people living in suburban and urban areas to where their food comes from. From the Master Show manship Contest and other youth livestock shows, to fresh produce sold by the Illi nois Specialty Growers Asso ciation and pork chop or bris ket sandwiches offered in the commodity pavilion, agricul ture was literally around ev ery corner and on every table. In addition to fairgoer ac tivities, commodity group leaders also had the chance to work collaboratively on is sues that affect rural commu nities. I was proud to see so many farmers meeting with elected officials and represen tatives from universities and government entities to talk about programs that can ben efit Illinois agriculture.

Just realize it isn’t for everyone. At least not anymore.

Flash forward to the 2022 fair and I’ve now become a spectator in the stands, watch ing youth exhibitors show in the same arena I had when I was their age. I’m reminded of how special the experience is for those in the show ring and for the friends and fami lies cheering them on from the sidelines.I’malso reminded of the many ways agriculture brings people together.

Some of my favorite mem ories from the Illinois State Fair go back to the years I spent in high school showing dairy cattle owned by family friends. I remember the ner vous excitement and feeling of anticipation as I entered the ring, praying the Holstein I was leading would cooperate.

I know a lot of busy people. They use calendars to remind them of their appointment and commitments. They pull out their phone to see if they have 15 minutes of free time anytime in the upcoming week, or maybe month. They talk about the business of busyness because it’s important stuff. It’s allencompassing, sometimes. Oftentimes because there is no escaping it. It’s the price of success, prestige, happiness, self-esteem and fulfillment in life; busy leads to all these and more. It’s all good. Or maybe not.Take it from someone who used to think she was one of the busiest of the busy—and damn proud of it, thank you very much. I know, because I’ve been there. I was there—for eons. A very, very, very busy person.Iused to color code my calendar with highlighter markers – one color for each kid and one for my husband and me. I think maybe even the dog and cat had their own highlighter colors, but I’m not sure. I was too busy to commit that to memory. Some days—most days— looked like a rainbow because of all the activities, meetings, commitments and veterinary appointments. And I’ll be honest: That calendar stood as a source of pride.Iwas drinking the Kool Aid without paying attention to calories, sugar content or artificial colors and ingredients. I was buying into that brand of cool without even glancing at the label.Ithought busy was cool. And it was, in a sense, but not in the way I thought at theMytime.brightly colored rainbow calendar pages were cool because they illustrated happenings in the lives of the people (and perhaps animals) I loved. They showed my priorities were defined by family. Love and family is cool. Busy, perhaps, may not be.My comfortable, busy, recently vacuumed carpet got yanked out from under me less than two years ago when a major life circumstance marched in and forcibly grabbed busy from my anxious grasp. I was left holding nothing, standing in nothingness and unable to move anywhere beyond that. In that moment, I discovered the opposite of busy. I discovered the nothingness of freedom. The value of unencumbered time. The beauty of a day without commitments.

Guidelines for writing, submitting a letter to the editor

It redefined my life. And it made me realize I have a choice. That we all have a choice. Busy is a choice.Itis also an illusion. We tell ourselves we are busy, because it somehow serves our psyche. I’m not sure how, exactly. I think perhaps “busy” serves different purposes for different people. It can alleviate loneliness; it might hide insecurity; it can give value to time spent working at a job, parenting kids or helping aging parents. Again, that is OK. Busy worked for me for many years. But right now, honestly, busy is too complicated for my life. I don’t have the time to be Andbusy.all I ask is for your understanding and nonjudgement. I don’t judge you for being busy; please don’t judge me for the opposite. I don’t have the drive to be busy right now. I don’t have it in my heart. I just want to be. Be calm. Be at peace. Be in the here and now. Be me. And you can be you, as busy as you wish.

atherosclerotic plaque found in cardiovascular disease, including strokes. The bacteria can enter your heart and infect the heart valves in people who have heart valve disease as well. Oral bacteria and inflammation are considered the link between periodontitis and systemic health. In other words, bacteria in the bloodstream leads to inflammation and inflammation can make the blood more likely to clot (resulting in stroke and heart disease). In turn, strokes and cardiac disease can suppress the immune system, which increases your chance of infection. Repeated exposure to bacteria in the blood has a cumulative effect that increases the progression of atherosclerosis, further inflammation, and clot formation.TheAmerican Stroke Association advocates treating gum disease as one of the factors that can reduce your risk for stroke. September is National Gum Care Month

While you would think citizens of the United States would enjoy better health than the majority of the world, it comes as no surprise that almost half (46%) of our adult population has gum disease. This is deeply concerning because having poor oral health makes it exceedingly difficult for you to retain overall health. Modern, advanced research methods, being employed at the highest institutional levels throughout the world, have discovered strong links between periodontal disease and diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, and many other chronic health conditions. As our population continues to age, it becomes even more critical to get the word out about this destructive, and entirely preventable disease. Therefore, September has been designated as National Gum Care Month. Gum disease begins when the space where your teeth meet your gums becomes infected with bacteria. It is preventable if you practice effective daily oral hygiene, maintain a healthy diet, avoid any and all tobacco products and keep regular dental visits. Regular dental visits are necessary because certain medications, systemic havevessels.andformationbeentheofandbodyvesselsinflammationbloodstreambeencauseloss.teethanddestructionquicklyuntreated,reversedcalleddiagnosesinterventions.oralmakeandpregnancy,diseases,malocclusions,physicallimitationscanyoumorepronetodiseaseandnecessitateIfyourdentistmildgumdisease,gingivitis,itcanbeifcaughtearly.Leftgingivitiscanleadtoperiodontitis,ofthetissuesbonethatholdyourinplace,andtoothThebacteriathatperiodontitishaveshowntoentertheandtriggerinthebloodthroughoutyourincludingtheheartbrain.InflammationthedelicateliningofbloodvesselshasshowntotriggertheofatherosclerosisthenarrowingofbloodPeriodontalbacteriabeenfoundinthe

Watermelons are in season, and they are pretty darn good. Cucumbers are also very plen tiful this summer. Put them together for this great salad. I went to a women’s gathering last week and learned several interesting watermelon facts. Watermelon is both a vegeta ble and a fruit. It is a great fruit for fighting inflamma tion in the joints. It was first mentioned 5000 years ago in Egypt. Because it is 90% water, it was used in desert for hydration. It is a fruit that can use the flesh and the rind to eat. Now that you have all this useless info about water melons, enjoy this salad! ¼ C. extra-virgin olive oil 2 T. red wine vinegar ½ t. salt 3 C. cubed seedless water melon1C. medium cucumber, chopped1C.crumbled feta ½ C. red onion, thinly sliced½C. coarsely chopped mint Chopped mint for garnish Flaky sea salt for garnish In a small bowl, whisk to gether oil, vinegar, and salt. In a large serving bowl, com bine watermelon, cucumber, feta, red onion, and mint. Add dressing and toss to coat. Garnish with mint and flaky sea salt. Eggplant Gratin Eggplants are in abundance this year. I had someone ask for a different eggplant recipe. This one uses a lot of herbs. Remember eggplant has a lot of moisture in it. Follow the directions for getting rid of the excess water before attempt ing to put it in the oven. Place a second lay er of paper towels on top of eggplant; place a heavy cut ting board or a stack of bak ing sheets on top of eggplant to press out excess water. Let stand for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375. Spray a 1-quart baking dish with cooking spray. Line an other large, rimmed baking sheet with paper towels. Heat a large skillet over high heat. Add eggplant slices in batch es; cook until browned, about 2 minutes per side. Our days have begun to get shorter, but we still have had nice weather to do outside ac tivities. Other than our flood ing problems, our summer has been beautiful. I don’t know when I have seen such beautiful, lush, green vegeta tion in August. We live in a beautiful part of Illinois. Our gardens are still producing, so this week will continue to fea ture recipes that are seasonal. Have a happy cooking week!

My hope is that as this next farm bill is written, we will see overwhelming support from both sides of the polit ical aisle. Bipartisan support for legislation like this can bring people together over is sues that impact us all, from commodity prices to supple mental nutrition assistance programs.

Just eight days after Ag Day at the Illinois State Fair, more than 100 ag industry leaders met to conduct the Illinois Agricultural Legis lative Roundtable (IALR) Candidate Forum in rural Lexington. Candidates for Il linois governor and U.S. Sen ate talked about issues they would address if elected. The IALR does not endorse statewide candidates, nor does Illinois Farm Bureau, so this candidate forum offered an excellent venue to hear from candidates about their plans for supporting Illinois agriculture.Discussion topics includ ed 2023 farm bill priorities, along with issues facing the general farm economy, live stock sector and biofuels industry. Candidates also ad dressed transportation and infrastructure projects needed in rural areas. To watch each candidate’s presentation at the roundtable forum, visit commonbringagriculturetoant,andbetweenrangeingpublictheandcandidatesresidentsapproaches,weeknow.com/vote2022.farmAstheNovemberelectionIurgeIllinoistolearnmoreaboutrunningforofficetakeintoconsiderationtremendouscommitmentofficialsmaketoservconstituentswithabroadofexpectations.Whilerecentdiscussionsfarmers,agleaderselectedofficialsisimportthereisstillalotofworkdo.Butonethingiscertain:willcontinuetopeopletogethertofindsolutions.

As a speaker on the panel, the main points I shared are areas of concern Illinois farm ers have expressed to me in the past. The first is the need to protect crop insurance as an essential risk-management tool in farmers’ toolboxes. The second is the need to maintain voluntary conserva tion efforts, rather than im posing mandates on farmers who are already doing their best to preserve farmland for the next generation.

Peaches are still available at a pretty good price in the grocery store. This crisp recipe keeps the skins on the peaches. They will soften when baked and add a pretty pink color. Sprinkling with lemon juice will enhance the flavor of the peaches. If you want to peel the peach es, you certainly can do that too!6 C. coarsely chopped fresh peaches, with skins (about 6 peaches) ½ t. almond extract 1 C. flour 1 C. white sugar ¼ C. packed brown sugar

are interested in purchasing Christine’s book, it is avail able at the Lena Mercantile. It is hard to believe that Labor Day is just around the corner. Time sure flew by this summer. School has started without beastly hot weather which is a bless ing. Fall sports are in full swing, and my flowers are beginning to look as if they are tired of hanging around. I know people have started putting mums out, but I still think it is early. I will let you know if I succumb to the pressure of fall decorations! The sun is setting earlier, and I think that signals a change in how we all are starting to cook. I guess we will have to be thinking about squash, apples, pumpkins, and pota toes.
