River Ridge Rolling Early The River Ridge Wildcats began their season on a high note when they made the trip to face off with fellow Wildcats from Cuba-Spoon River Valley. Coming off of a 4-5 season the River Ridge Wildcats were eager to get off to a hot start in order to propel them above .500 and into the postseason. The Cuba-Spoon River Valley Wildcats were also coming off a 4-5 season. The River Ridge offense was rolling early on and they were able to develop a large deficit that would be too much for Cuba-Spoon river Valley to overcome. In their first game, in their new conference the River Ridge Wildcats put up an impressive 60 points all together. Making the move from Northwest Upstate Illini-West Conference, Athletic Director Shean Albrecht and the River Ridge district had made the decision to move the team to eight man football, where they now compete in the Eight Man Freelance division. The Wildcats may be new to it but they showed out in their first game with a 60-22 victory. Their week two matchup will take place across state lines as they travel over to Winfield, IA to face off with the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves. The Wolves lost their week 1 game in a shootout with Springville, 4138. The explosive Wildcat offense will have to keep their foot on the pedal as they look to go 2-0 this week.
with season with a matchup against the West Carroll Thunder. The Lady Wildcats struggled to get going in set one when they fell by a score of 25-8. They were able to respond in set two, however, when they managed to earn an impressive victory of their own with a 25-15 score. With each team earning an impressive victory in games one and two, it set up for a battle in the third set. The Wildcats were able to keep it close until the end, when they eventually fell by a final score of 15-21. They were led by Julia Finazzo and Livia Haas from the line as Finazzo had seven points while Haas had an impressive nineteen points of her own. Riley Finn, Sarah Pratt, and Finazzo all had two kills a piece, and Madison Stulc had seven assists on the night.
Stockton Volleyball The loss put the Wildcats at an 0-1 start to their season, and they would eventually go on to fall to the Stockton Lady Warriors in their second matchup. Stockton swept the Wildcats with scores of 25-11 and 25-20 as River Ridge, once again, needed a game to get their offense going. Stockton is off to a 2-1 start to their season and look to be one of the top teams in the conference as they are led by a pair of seniors in Katie Wright and Kenna Haas, as well as sophomore Kenze Haas. In the Wildcats next two games they fell to Pearl City and Durand as they have suffered three straight sweeps. The good news is, they River Ridge Volleyball can only go up from here as long Near the end of August, the Riv- as they continue to fight in the face er Ridge volleyball team kicked off of adversity.

Play it Forward Golf Outing benefits local youth Woodbine Bend Golf Course has been supporting charities through their Play it Forward golf outing for nearly 20 years. For much of that time this annual event supported a cure for ALS. But six years ago Woodbine Bend owner, Jenny Stoddard, and SCOUT Magazine publisher, Bridgette Stocks, together formed a new approach to their charitable giving – pick a different nonprofit each year to give the proceeds from the event to. Through the years, Play it Forward has raised nearly $100,000 for the following groups: Riverview Center, Jo Daviess County school art programs, Tyler Justice Center for children, Galena Center for the Arts, Timberlake Playhouse, and this year the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF). “I like the event because it mix-
es fun social time on the golf course with food, a silent and live auction, and raises money for charities doing good in the community,” said Sam Stoddard, General Manager of Woodbine Bend. Monies raised at the 2019 Play it Forward golf outing will support JDCF’s environmental education program including Sunshine Acre. Sunshine Acre is a “skills to succeed” program for students with special challenges who attend Northwest Academy in Elizabeth, Illinois. Sunshine Acre has helped high school students gain work experience and job readiness skills, write resumes, and learn how to interview for their first job. This is the 6th school year that JDCF and Northwest Academy have partnered to run the Sunshine Acre Program which was named by students in 2014.

“We have graduated 18 students since the inception of Sunshine Acre. Nine have gone onto college and/or trade schools. The college tours provided by JDCF laid the foundation for our students to think about life beyond high school. Of the 9 students, none of their parents attended a college/trade school, which speaks to the impact the adults within JDCF have had on their choice. Bottom line, the program meets students with emotional challenges where they are and takes them farther than they ever thought possible,” said Amy Finn, Northwest Academy Facilitator. JDCF expresses sincere thanks to both SCOUT Magazine and Woodbine Bend Golf Course for their amazing donation in support of our local youth.
