Black Hawk-Warren hopes to keeps wins coming BSMS works toward first victory By Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT
The Black Hawk-Warren Warriors are in the middle of a tight conference race for football as they chase Potosi-Cassville and River Ridge. At 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Six Rivers
Conference play, the Warriors sit in third place with P-C and River Ridge leading the way tied at 3-0 in league play. The Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg Knights have fallen behind in the race, as the Knights are yet to crack the win column this season. The Knights have struggled to put points on the board offensively, as they average just under 12 points per game this season. On the other side of
things, the Knights’ defense allows nearly 40 points per game. A majority of the Knights’ offense has come through the air as quarterback Jacob Deurr leads the team with 512 yards passing, six touchdowns, and just two interceptions. Nevada Sandlin has been BSMS’s standout player, leading the team in rushing and receiving yards. Sandlin currently has 232 rushing yards and

two rushing touchdowns to go along with 201 receiving yards and three receiving scores. Sandlin provides the Knights with big play capability, as his impressive receiving stats come on just seven receptions. Wideout Charlie Wiegel leads the team in receptions with 10, two of which went for touchdowns. Junior Nate Lawrence is next up offensively as he combines
for 267 yards on the ground and through the air. Despite the offense’s big play ability, the Knights have struggled to put it all together this season, leading to their 0-5 record. The Warriors have had better fortunes in the fall 2021 season, as Black Hawk-Warren currently sits at 3-2 overall. Their most recent victory came in week five, when they routed Pecatonica-Argyle 46-
12. Perhaps their most impressive win of the 2021 season came in week three, when they dominated in a 56-0 shutout over Iowa-Grant. The Warriors held just a 16-0 lead after the first quarter. They exploded for 24 points in the second, however, blowing the game wide open as they walked to a commanding victory.

Lawmakers question enforcement of school mask mandates By Peter Hancock CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS
Expressing concern that the Illinois State Board of Education might have overstepped its bounds by threatening to withhold funding from school districts that do not enforce its mask mandate, a legislative panel on Tuesday urged the agency to put its policies into formal rules. The unanimous vote by the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, or JCAR, represented one of the few
times that Illinois lawmakers have pushed back against the enforcement of Gov. JB Pritzker’s executive orders since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it came after intense questioning of ISBE officials, especially from Republican members of the panel. Sen. Don DeWitte, R-St. Charles, said he personally has no problem with wearing masks or getting vaccinated and that he encourages others to get vaccinated as well.
“Having said that, I do have concerns with government overreach and those who act outside their authority,” he said. “That is the purpose of our questions today. As one member of JCAR, it is incumbent upon all of us to ask questions to ensure government is acting within its authority and in line with state statute.” On Aug. 4, Pritzker issued an executive order requiring all public and nonpublic
