The Scoop Today expands to include Facebook By Tony Carton EDITOR

Well, here it is 2019 and it looks like we’re finally going to drag Rock Valley Publishing and its Scoop Today and Shoppers Guide papers into the 21st century with a Facebook page. It hasn’t been easy. The two newspapers have been serving Jo Daviess County and Stephenson County for more years than I care to remember, but times change and we’re trying to move forward, so Facebook it is. We started about five months ago with a page. It grew slowly and cautiously and today we’ve reached nearly 500 followers with more coming every week. The experiment has already exceeded our expectations. We’ve been fortunate thus far. Our staff is fairly knowledgeable about social media and has considerable experience if only from their own personal pages. It’s a little different when you try to run a business page, but not impossible. It just takes time, concentration, motivation, and a little luck. We started out by looking at competitors’ pages to see what works and what doesn’t. There’s no set formula, but after considerable observation we decided to run mostly photos rather than text, because while folks don’t generally read sitting at a computer, they will look at pictures. Then we realized we could “pin” certain materials to the top of the page and it would draw attention for as long as we left it there. Our first experiment with “pinning” is with obituaries. Obituaries seem to draw attention and people don’t like searching for them, so we pin them to the top of the page. We move things in and out from the top of the page and are finding considerable success. Our most successful post to date has been a very old picture of the Chelsea School which was located between Stockton and Warren. The photo was brought into the office by someone who had questions about who was in the picture. We posted it to our new Facebook page. We pinned it to the top of the page and in a matter of about six days we received 3000 + responses. I wouldn’t say 3000 is exactly viral, but for our fledgling project it seemed to work amazingly well. I’m going to share that photo with

This is the Chelsea School. It was located between Stockton and Warren. The teacher’s name was Marybell Trost. We are looking for any possible additional information. Will you help?

you today along with some of the comments we received and if you care to add to it feel free to visit our Facebook page @scoopshopper and leave us a comment. Or, if you have thoughts about how we could do better with our Facebook experiment, like or follow the page and let us know what you think. The original photo which has been edited to include the names of the teacher and her pupils is on our front page this week. Some of the comments we received are as follows: Wendy Bailey Trost – The School Year was 1946-47 at Chelsea School

District #84. Front row - Nancy Pohl, Mary E Stadel, John Schlafer, Linda McKee. 2nd row - Barbara Uecker, Laurrel McKee, Darlene Hurst, Donald Doubler, Robert Gallager. 3rd row - Ronald Thill, Marvin Thill, Joan Gallager (Information provided by Maribell Dawson Trost’s son, David Trost.) Terry Pickett - I attended first grade

there. Mrs. Whitman was the teacher at the time. There were only five of us in the first grade, all boys. Kay Walker - That is my sister Nancy Pohl. She knew several in the picture. I need to send her this. We lived on the Kort farm at the time. Think Barb Euker and probably some Rodgers kids are also in picture.

Barb Trost Nelson - Yes, that’s my mom...Maribell Dawson Trost. Isn’t that a great photo? I think it would have been in about 1947 or 1948? Ralph Hanson My sister Roberta went to school there for a time after the Stockton school burned down.
