Shepherd of the Hills Church continues fight to end food insecurity By John Day

CORRESPONDENT

A country church with the name Shepherd of the Hills evokes thoughts of the Harold Bell Wright novel of the same name. There is, however, a real Shepherd of the Hills Church which is a typical white frame construction building with a peaked roof and high steeple. The church itself is surrounded by rolling hills. It is the kind of church that was so common in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This real Church of the Hills serves the communities of Schapville and Scales Mound. Pastor Mark Oehlert came to Shepherd of the Hills from Sycamore, Illinois about two years ago.

Since then, he has been guiding the church and practicing community outreach in many ways. For instance, every Wednesday there is a church lunch-eon. In addition to the meal guests can take home fresh vegetables harvested from the church garden. Oehlert said, “Our Wednesday event is open to everyone and anyone. Each week we have 45 to 70 people gathering together. There is no charge. The idea is not just a way of helping those in need, it’s also a way of bringing people from different backgrounds together who may otherwise have little or no social contact. It’s a way of bringing together like minded people to enjoy fellowship in a casual setting.” The Wednesday luncheon happens

to coincide with the business hours of the Sonshine Center which is a nearby resale shop. The shop makes available gently used clothing and household items. Those attending the luncheon then have an opportunity to stop in the center and drop off a donation or make a purchase. Shepherd of the Hills, like many congregations have been supporting World Hunger Relief for several years. Oehlert and others in the church have come to realize that hunger is not just a problem for undeveloped countries. Hunger is a real problem right here in our own

community. Oehlert said, “We don’t think of people around us needing help with food costs and nutrition. It is a real problem, however, and we’re always looking for ways to fight this problem. In addition to the Wednesday luncheon the church has committed itself to helping support the food pantries in our area.” One of the ways which has enabled Shepherd of the Hills to support local Food pantries is the Annual Steak Fry. The Annual Steak Fry is a major source of funding donations to area food pan-tries. Oehlert said, “The event is staffed by volunteers

and after the proceeds of the event are realized we divide the money between the local food pantries here in the county. Donations are made to the facilities in Hanover, Elizabeth, Galena and others. This year’s event is scheduled for September 8 from 4:30 to 7:30. We’re hoping for a good turn out.” Shepherd of the Hills Church is located at 536 E. Schapville Rd. They can be reached at 815-845-2061 or through Facebook. Sonshine Center resale shop is open every Wednesday at 10 a.m. The location is 1012 E. Schapville Rd. Elizabeth.

The Vitality, a once-in-a while newsletter By Kris Hall

Welcome: On behalf of the students and staff members of the Jo Daviess Carroll Career Technical Education (CTE) Academy, I welcome you to the initial edition of The Vitality, our once-in-a while newsletter. Why The Vitality? Our goal and challenge is to re-vitalize the CTE Academy! We’re vital to our communities and school districts as they are to us! I have learned so much in only one month ABOUT the continuous, exemplary collaboration between our communities, school districts, and the Academy! Congratulations on the success from 1972-2018! We’re feeling re-vitalized and anxiously looking forward to our 1st day with students on Tuesday, Aug.21! The Vitality is FREE and I promise there will ONLY be a FRONT and BACK. I published 8 years of the “T Time” in my previous position and never needed a third page (although “once-in-a-while” sometimes became every 2 weeks). Seems every time I published the “T Time,” staff members suggested other topics the same day for the NEXT edition. Please e-mail or telephone if you wish to cancel your FREE subscription… A mistake, of course… Please feel free to forward The Vitality to others (and/or suggest other subscribers). Hopefully, others will make sugges-

tions for topics for the NEXT edition. Feedback always appreciated! Thank you!
