Public health officials announce 35,371 new cases of COVID-19 over the past week The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) on July 29 reported 35,371 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease

(COVID-19) in Illinois, including 48 deaths since July 22.

According to the CDC, 66 counties are now rated at

High Community Level for COVID-19. An additional 31 counties in Illinois are now rated at Medium Community Level.

Currently, the IDPH is reporting a total of 3,563,653 cases, including 34,357 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois since the beginning of the

pandemic.

“With 97 counties at an elevated risk level for COVID-19, the most important thing people can do to protect themselves is to make sure they are up-to-date on their vaccinations and boosters,” said IDPH Acting Director Amaal Tokars. “This is the most effective means we have to protect ourselves from serious illness, hospitalization and death. So please don’t wait to get up-to-date.”

Tokars is also urging parents and guardians to take the steps necessary to get children vaccinated, especially small children under 5 for whom COVID-19 vaccines were recommended by the CDC on June 18.

Tokars said that the IDPH is supporting an education and outreach campaign by the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics to educate healthcare providers and parents about the effectiveness and safety of the newly authorized vaccines for children under 5.

Stockton Heritage Museum to host Play That Hot Fiddle presentation Stockton Heritage Museum will host a presentation by Dennis Stroughmatt on child prodigy fiddler and singer Wade Ray. The presentation, “Play That Hot Fiddle: Old Time Radio and the Life of Southern Illinois Swing Fiddler “Pappy” Wade Ray,” will take place on Sunday August 7, 2022, at the Stockton Heritage Museum, 107 West Front Street, Stockton, IL, at 2 p.m.

Born in 1916 in southern Indiana from a southeastern Illinois family, the child prodigy fiddler and singer Wade Ray developed into one of the most endearing entertainers in country and western swing music. Through the medium of radio on shows such as “The Pappy Cheshire Show” on KMOX in St. Louis and the “National Barn Dance” on WLS in Chicago, Wade Ray gained national prestige alongside performers such as Patsy Montana and Rex Allen.

Presenting the fast-swing fiddling and humorous stories of his mentor Wade Ray, Dennis Stroughmatt will lead audiences through the early years of Old Time Radio and share how music brought America through The Great

Depression, WWII, and beyond.

This presentation will also be accompanied by rare video of Wade Ray and personal memorabilia from the Wade Ray collection. The event will be co-produced by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, which invites Illinois authors, artists, and educators to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout the state, enabling local nonprofit organizations to present free-admission cultural programs to their communities. Hearing examines practices, profits of gun industry

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Last week, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing examining the practices and profits of the gun industry in the wake of the recent mass shootings, the increase in general gun violence across the country, and the stunning revelation that gun manufacturers have made more $1 billion in profits from assault weapons in the past decade alone.

During the hearing, I asked Marty Daniel, CEO of Daniel Defense, about a recent tweet the company sent out featuring an image of a sniper rifle on a rooftop aimed at a person sitting in a parked car.

Despite claims from gun companies that they market their weapons for hunting and self-defense purposes, it is clear that neither is happening in the company’s promotional tweet—it is a shooter on a roof preparing to open fire on an unsuspecting person.

The disturbing nature of this ad is magnified when considering that it comes just weeks after the Highland Park tragedy in which the gunman unleashed a hail of bullets from a rooftop position, murdering seven

people and paralyzing a child from the waist down.

I also questioned Antonia Okafor, the national director of Women’s Outreach for Gun Owners of America, noting that she called for abolishing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) in a 2020 social media post.

Despite its demonization by some extremists, the ATF plays a critical role in saving lives and combatting gun violence. In 2020, the ATF National Tracing Center assisted over 8,000 law enforcement agencies and processed almost 500,000 requests that potentially saved countless lives. ATF’s tracing center also led to the swift identification and apprehension of the Highland Park shooter before he could claim even more innocent lives.

Benefit planned for Bonnie Stuckey Bonnie Stuckey has devoted her life to serving others and to blessing countless people through her teaching career and her musical giftedness.

In December this past year, following oral surgery, she continued to experience ongoing concerns with pain and swelling that eventually led to emergency surgery on Feb. 19 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. It appeared that she had a serious infection in the jawbone.

As a breast cancer survivor for over 30 years, it did not occur to her or her physicians that cancer might be the source of this problem, but a biopsy during surgery revealed that there was cancer in her jaw.

Following that diagnosis, she went through a very extensive eight-hour surgery to remove her entire left jaw, all of her teeth and then to place a reconstructed jaw made partially from her own thigh muscle.

After a lengthy recovery, she had 30 radiation treatments at UW Hospital and six weeks of intense chemotherapy as part of an experimental trial. Through so much pain, exhaustion, and disruption of taste as well as difficulty swallowing, Bonnie has continued her positive focus, even returning to play the organ at her local St. Paul Church of Epleyanna whenever her doctors and her physical condition allow.

She continues to need rehydration therapy at SSM Health in Monroe until she is

able to sustain enough intake to maintain correct electrolyte balance.

To assist Bonnie and her husband, Merle, with the many expenses not covered by insurance, a benefit has been planned for Saturday, Aug. 20 in Dakota, Ill, in her honor called “Bucks for ‘B’”.

Various events will be running from 3 to 11 p.m. at both the Dakota High School, 400 Campus Drive, and Route 75 Bar and Grill, 320 E. Main Street.

Illinois Dems stump for 2024 Chicago convention as party chair vote looms

Illinois Democrats are vying to make Chicago the host city for the Democratic National Convention in 2024 while considering who will lead their party for the next four years.

Meanwhile, the state’s Republican Party is hearing calls for a censure of one of its sitting congressmen.

Officials for the Democratic National Committee were in Chicago on July 26 as state leaders, including Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, called a news conference to tout the city as a potential host for the Democrats’ 2024 nominating convention.

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison said at a July 26 news conference in Chicago the committee was looking for a city that represents diversity, inclusion and opportunity. He said it will be the first big showcase for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who didn’t have a convention in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other finalist cities include New York City, Atlanta and Houston.

Pritzker, whose name has

frequently been mentioned in the conversation as a potential replacement for Biden if he doesn’t run in 2024, said he looks at the convention as an opportunity “to show off” the city, which “represents what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris represent.”

“This is what it looks like when Americans vote for leaders who support hardworking families,” Pritzker said, citing “policies of a fair minimum wage, expanding voting rights, protecting civil rights and human rights, and standing up for the right to choose.”

Pritzker said the convention would bring “thousands of good-paying, labor-friendly jobs” and 50,000 visitors to the state. Lightfoot estimated it could generate $150 million to $200 million in spending in the local economy.

She also cited the city’s familiarity with large-scale events, along with its infrastructure, location and the state’s “unified leadership” as reasons Chicago should host the convention.

But the news conference came just four days before a contentious vote in which Democrats will choose the leader of the state party for the next four years. The post is currently held by Congresswoman Robin Kelly, of Matteson. She won that title in March 2021 over Pritzker’s preferred candidate, Chicago Ald. Michelle Harris.

Kelly was elected to replace former state House Speaker Michael Madigan, who stepped down last year after failing to gain another term as House speaker. He was the

state’s party leader from April 1998 until February 2021.

The party’s state central committee, made up of 17 men and 17 women from the state’s congressional districts, was scheduled to vote July 30 in Springfield on whether Kelly would remain in charge of the party for another four-year term. Each committeeperson’s vote is weighted based on the number of Democratic ballots cast in the congressional district.

Because Kelly is a sitting congresswoman, she is unable to raise money for candidates in state races, although she has no restrictions on fundraising for federal races. While the party created a fundraising committee for state races, the fundraising issue remains a key point of contention.

The latest campaign filings from the Democratic Party of Illinois’ state fund show it raised $1.72 million in the quarter ending June 30, $1.5 million of which was transferred from Pritzker’s campaign fund. The party’s state fund expended $10,424.47 for the quarter that ended June 30, excluding Pritzker-funded mailers. In the previous quarter, the DPI state fund spent $11,240.06. Its balance as of June 30 was $2.8 million.

But the party also maintains a federal fund registered through the Federal Election Commission, and DPI spokesperson Jake Lewis said the party has raised over $2 million since Kelly took over as party chair between the two funds, not including Pritzker’s transfers.

“Under Robin Kelly’s leadership, the Democratic Party of Illinois has been overhauled from top to bottom, with new staff and vendors, upgraded data and technology services, party organizers, an active communications shop, and more,” he said in an email.

“Chair Kelly’s vision for the party is one that serves all Democrats across our state, beyond just one candidate or one caucus, and we will continue to move our party forward.”

“We encourage Democrats to focus on the issues that matter to the people of this state, like defending our fundamental rights and defeating Republicans in the November,” Lewis added.

Pritzker, meanwhile, is supporting state Rep. Lisa Hernandez, D-Cicero, an assistant majority leader in the state House who carried the recent congressional and state redistricting bills through the General Assembly.

House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch is supporting Hernandez as well.

“This means having a chair that can fundraise for all Democratic candidates,” Welch said in a statement.

Welch said Hernandez’s “vision” would be to create a new role for Kelly as “federal chair.”

“They can work in partnership to lead the party forward,” he said in the statement. “This is how we have Democrats be more supported as we face two Supreme Court races, dozens of legislative campaigns, and other races up and down the ballot.”

Welch said it is “critical” that the leader of the state party can raise and spend funds that support all Democratic candidates across the state.

“Right now, DPI does not and cannot do that. If a leadership change occurs, it will,” he said.

The powerful AFL-CIO federation of labor unions issued a statement shortly after Welch’s supporting Hernandez as well.

Kelly told NBC News she was “disappointed” in the lack of support from Pritzker, but

she appeared alongside the governor and other members of Congress at the morning event July 26, and the governor downplayed intraparty tensions.

“Well, let’s be clear: We’re all standing here in unison standing up for a Democratic Convention for Chicago and for the state of Illinois,” Pritzker said.

“And I think as the Chair (Kelly) said so eloquently, after Saturday, we’re going to have a chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois, whoever that is, is going to serve a four-year term,” he added, noting Democrats would rally around the chair for the next four years.

U.S. Sen Dick Durbin remains Kelly’s most prominent backer.

Republicans, meanwhile, were dealing with intraparty tensions of their own as state lawmakers in the conservative Freedom Caucus called on the party to censure U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, for his role as an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump on the U.S. House committee investigating the

Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

State Reps. Chris Miller, Brad Halbrook, Dan Caulkins, Adam Niemerg, and Blaine Wilhour—some of GOP governor candidate Darren Bailey’s closest allies in the Illinois General Assembly— called for the state party to censure Kinzinger and called the Jan. 6 hearings “a sham without any due process.”

The state party issued a statement saying it was “focused on uniting the party to defeat Gov. Pritzker in November and make Illinois a safe and affordable place for people to live.”

Bailey, at a news conference called to criticize the governor’s handling of the state Department of Children and Family Services, didn’t answer directly whether he thought Kinzinger should be censured.

“I have dealt with Adam Kinzinger on my own,” he said. “I’ve made my statements. I don’t agree with anything that Adam Kinzinger stands for. And I’ve made the statement.”

It’s the latest quarterly poll from the firm, and data included 14,258 registered voters polled from April 1 through June 30.

While it’s a truism of polling that any poll is just a “snapshot in time,” Pritzker’s numbers have been remarkably consistent in the Morning Consult measurements since January 2021. His approval has ranged from 50 to 51 percent while disapproval ranged from 43 to 44 percent.

Morning Consult distributed the polling results under the headline “Democratic Governors Facing Re-Election Are Resisting Biden’s Drag Effect.” The firm measured Biden’s approval at 47 percent in Illinois while disapproval measured at 50 percent.

The discrepancies between the approval ratings of Biden and Democratic governors help explain the level of intrigue in national news outlets regarding Biden potentially being replaced atop the Democratic ticket in the 2024 election cycle.

Pritzker’s name—along with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who had a 53-40 approval split according to the poll—has been floated time and again in that conversation.

Many news outlets, including Capitol News Illinois, have asked him about his plans should Democrats seek a new presidential candidate next time around.

He hasn’t directly denied an interest in a presidential run, but he told Capitol News Illinois at the end of June that Illinois remains his focus.

“I’m not talking about running for president. I’m talking about running for governor,” Pritzker told said in an interview after the June 28 primary. “And it’s what I’m focused on. I really do believe that, you know—I love this state—and I love the job that I have. I believe there’s a lot more to get done. I mean, you wouldn’t look at me and say that Illinois doesn’t have more to get done.”

The intrigue has also been largely stoked by the governor’s recent speaking engagements.

In June he spoke at a gathering of Democrats in New Hampshire, normally one of the country’s first states to hold a primary, and last weekend he spoke at Florida Democrats’ Leadership Blue gala.

Next week school sports activities begin. Local stores have school supplies out in full force. As we begin the downside of summer, the fruits and vegetables of the season are out and about. Sweet corn stands are popping up and people are getting ready to eat the corn with the butter dripping down their chins, a ritual of summer.

This week we have some interesting recipes for your summer cooking.

Bailey’s camp spent $9.2 million.

Bailey’s main financial backer has been Richard Uihlein, founder of the shipping supply company Uline, having donated $9 million to the candidate and $8 million to other political action committees working on Bailey’s behalf during the primary.

I mentioned at the beginning that sweet corn is arriving, zucchini is in full form, and green beans have been appearing at my door or are delivered to me. I am really enjoying the fresh green beans.

A friend told me her tomatoes are the size of golf balls, so they will be coming soon. I also had some great red raspberries from a friend and am waiting for some good apples to make a pie. Food is good, and life continues to ebb on.

I also want to remind all of you that Christine Maher Hawkinson has written a book, 50 Years in the Bleachers. She talks of the history of Title IX which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Christine graduated

from Le-Win and is the daughter of Mary Maher and the late Richard Maher. Mr. Maher was a long-time educator and basketball coach at Le-Win. Christine was one of the first female athletes to compete under Title IX. She married fellow classmate, Scott Hawkinson, who became an educator and basketball coach also.

Christine and Scott raised two daughters who were also athletes. The book is her perspective from the beginning of Title IX to raising her children. She will be having a book signing on Aug. 13 at the Lena Public Library.

The League of Women Voters of Jo Daviess County to host recycling fundraiser The League of Women Voters of Jo Daviess County (LWV-JDC) invites fellow citizens to a Recycle, Repurpose, Reuse (RRR) event on Thursday, Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the home of Bonnie and John Cox, 906 Third Street, Galena. The event was moved from its traditional Turney House location on US Highway 20 due to construction on the highway.

This marks the second year the LWV-JDC is sponsoring its RRR Event rather than its usual “Garage Sale” fundraiser.

Event participants are invited to choose items they can use and make a small donation to the LWVJDC, but only if able. LWVJDC members have donated 100’s of items including baby equipment, toys, clothes, jewelry, shoes, tools, household goods, books, and more.

In addition, the event will acknowledge Women’s

Equality Day which is celebrated every Aug. 26 to commemorate the passage of women’s suffrage in the United States. This celebration reminds us of the hurdles overcome by those heroic women who faced violence and discrimination to propel the women’s movement forward.

The Jo Daviess Conservation Jo Daviess County Fair August 4-7 Foundation seeks community support and input Main Entertainment Thursday: Queen Pageant Aug. 4, 6:30 p.m.

The Jo Daviess Conservations Foundation (JDCF) is seeking reaccreditation with the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, a program of the Land Trust Alliance (LTA).

The accreditation is important because it recognizes JDCF for meeting or exceeding national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever.

Public comments regarding JDCF’s work and how it complies with national quality standards facilitate the accreditation process and helps the commission gauge JDCF’s work. Visit bit.ly/3OGMkGJ to view the national standards.

Steve Barg, the Executive Director, notes the accreditation process is long, tedious, and complicated. He adds, “I

find the process painful and invasive, sort of like going to the dentist–I don’t really like it.” However, the prize at the end of this path is worth it.

Barg adds, “I have seen how the process has transformed this organization into a professional, well run, financially stable and ethical non-profit business. Becoming accredited means that I can look members, donors, and volunteers in the eye and honestly say we meet the highest standards of excellence in our sector. That means a lot to me and the conservation community that supports us”.

For Emily Painter, JDCF board president, accreditation means “JDCF holds itself to the highest ethical standards.

Accreditation confirms and

also empowers us with valuable LTA resources so we can continually improve our practices of land preservation, stewardship, and education.”

Barg also notes that “accreditation has given our donors and partners confidence that we operate at the highest ethical, financial and non-profit business standards in our sector for the past 10 years.”

– USDA is covering the added cost of non-contract formula to make it financially feasible for states to allow WIC participants to purchase alternate sizes, forms, or brands of infant formula.

In general, WIC state agencies have contracts with one of three manufacturers to provide formula to WIC infants who

are partially or fully formula fed. Using the new authority provided by the Access to Baby Formula Act, USDA recommended in May that state agencies that contract with Reckitt Mead Johnson (RMJ) or Gerber seek contract flexibility to allow alternate formulas if the contracted size, form, or brand of formula is unavail-

able. To help make this financially feasible, USDA is covering the additional costs of these alternate formulas while supplies remain impacted and will continue to do so through Sept. 30, 2022.

USDA also previously provided flexibility to temporarily allow alternate formula in states that contract with Ab-

bott, the third formula manufacturer and the subject of the voluntary formula recall in February. Abbott is currently covering that cost difference through Sept. 30, 2022.

USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service continues to work tirelessly to ensure WIC participants and stakeholders have the information they need

to keep infants fed and safe.

Within hours of the recall, the agency provided guidance to WIC state agencies and offered flexibilities to help them respond. FNS continues to provide ongoing assistance and support to states so they can adapt to the situation as it unfolds, approving nearly 500 waiver requests to date.

the factors that can lead to weakened enamel and gum recession as you age. As the gums pull away from the teeth, more of your tooth and roots are exposed to plaque. This increases your risk for tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease, destruction of the bone and connective tissues that hold teeth in place, and tooth loss.

Untreated periodontal disease is also associated with an increased risk of developing or exacerbating respiratory disease, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS, and diabetes. Missing, decayed, and loose teeth, accompanied by oral pain make it hard to eat.

Diets that do not provide adequate nutrition are a major contributor to the downward spiral of becoming frail or weak. Having less stamina makes you more vulnerable to falls, breaks,

chronic systemic illness, inability to perform activities of daily living, and loss of independence. Missing teeth prematurely age your face and can make it difficult or painful to talk. Being ashamed to smile, eat or talk leads to social isolation, which accelerates this downward spiral. Roughly 1.2 million frail seniors reside in nursing homes in America.

This number is projected to almost double by 2030.

Fortunately, many seniors are able to maintain their oral health and active lifestyle for much longer than previously in our history. Periodontal disease does not have to be part of growing older.

However, keeping your mouth young does require work and a commitment to preventative care.

Daily oral hygiene and preventative care will continue to be the most significant way to avoid the oral health challenges associated with aging.

Preventative dental care includes continuing your regular check-ups. This is not only critical to the prevention and prompt intervention of decay and periodontal disease damage. The incidence of oral cancer increases with age. Most oral cancers are diagnosed after age 55. Early detection and treatment significantly increase your odds of survival.

Preventing disease rather than treating it is always the gold standard. Alert your dental team if you are experiencing any medical or physical difficulties with brushing or flossing. There

are a number of products and adaptive techniques to assist you in maintaining your teeth. Report dry mouth to your dentist. Knowing when it started can offer clues to its underlying cause and early intervention limits damage.

Report any sores, swelling, or lesions on your lips or in your mouth. If multiple health issues are threatening your ability to maintain oral health, your dentist may prescribe shorter intervals between appointments. At each appointment be prepared to update your medical history and list current medications. Maintain and provide an updated list of contact information for all your medical providers as well.

Your dentist may also prescribe fluoride treatments.

As fluoride is drawn into the enamel, it boosts your teeth’s natural remineralization process, making them more resistant to decay.

Depending on your specific needs, this may include any of the following: fluoride varnish, creating a custom fluoride tray, daily fluoride prescription, or high fluoride low abrasive toothpaste. Your dentist will carefully monitor your fluoride exposure for optimal protection. Some patients may also benefit from an antimicrobial mouth rinse and other interventions.

For people who remain physically and socially active, age can be just a number on the calendar. Maintaining oral health throughout your senior years will help you maintain the general health necessary to achieve this.
