The River Ridge Wildcat’s football team are looking to make a turn around in the upcoming 2019 season. Head coach Doug Nicholas, entering his fifth year as head coach is hoping for the same. Nicholas holds a career coaching record of 8-28 while coaching at River Ridge. Turning around a high school program can be a challenge that takes years to happen, but with new school year comes another opportunity with new talent to be the group to make the change. Coming off a 4-5 season last year, coach Nicholas and the Wildcats have set a realistic goal that would be a great start to developing a winning program. “A realistic goal for us this year is to be above five hundred” Nicholas said. If the Wildcats can manage to finish above five hundred it would give them an opportunity to gain postseason experience and, hopefully, develop a hunger to win amongst the program. A hunger that stays for years to come. Nicholas believes their team strength will be their young, returning talent. “We have a decent number of athletes returning this year. However, at the varsity level, we are pretty untested.” He said of their team strengths and weaknesses. The amount of untested talent could be a good thing for coach Nicholas. This will give him an opportunity to mold and further develop a group of talent that is already familiar with his system. Nicholas expects a trio of seniors to lead the way for the Wildcats on the gridiron this season. Joseph Diaz, Dylan Landwer, and Dalton Wachter are three returning seniors who Nicholas believes will have a big impact on their success this season. If the trio wants to end their high school football careers on a high note, they will have to lead by example and set a standard for the underclassmen. Nicholas believes those underclassmen will also have a big role in the team’s success this season. A

group of Juniors in Bryton Engle, Caleb Rhodes, Jacob Sollars, and Sam Whitmer are on Nicholas’ players to watch list. A pair of sophomores will have the chance to prove themselves as well, as Caden Albrecht and Dominic Geerts are two young players that coach Nicholas will have a role on this varsity team. With decent numbers and a deep group of young talent, Coach Nicholas and the Wildcats could turn their luck around sooner rather than later. The Wildcats kick off their 2019 campaign Friday, August 30 when they host Cuba-Spoon River Valley.
