STOCKTON — Friday night saw the opening of the 2015 Stockton High School football season when the maroon and gold showed their stuff during the school’s annual Gator Ade bowl pre-season scrimmage. Head Coach Chris Thornton released a statement earlier in the week listing his top returning players as Hayden Hayes: 22 (Senior) who started at Linebacker last year and played running back Braden Staver: 26 (Senior) who started at Linebacker all year and Fullback the last half of the season Jacob Lawfer: 55 (Senior)
A starter on both the offensive and defensive line last season Zac Arndt: 76 (Senior) Who started at right tackle all of last season Dominic Carton: 83 (Senior) who started at corner last season Hayden Fox: 16 (Junior) who started the last 4 games last season at QB Thornton sees his top new comers as Dillon Hatfield: 34 (Junior) starting at RB/WR and DB Dylan Oppold: 33 (Junior) starting at FB/TE and LB Connor Davis: 52 (Junior) starting at Guard and Defensive End Patric McGovern: 75 (Junior) starting at Guard and Defensive Line
Gavin Krahmer: 82 (Junior) starting at WR and DB Thornton said he believes their biggest strength this year will be depth. “We have for the first time in some years more than 24 junior and seniors on our roster,” he said. “Being able to rotate players and keeping fresh bodies on the field will definitely be a great strength for us. Team speed will be another one of our strengths. Whereas we are undersized especially up front compared to many
teams we run extremely well and should be able to make up for it on speed.” He cited one of their weaknesses as a lack of varsity experience. “We only return three starters on offense and five on defense,” said Thornton. “For many of our players this will be their first season starting and playing heavy varsity minutes.” He said size will probably be their other weakness. “We will be over sized on
the line by most teams we play this year, but we’re working on getting better week after week, developing depth through experience,” Thornton said. “The quicker our line can develop and learn to play together will be a big key for success.” Stockton is looking at strong competition from both Polo and perennial foe Aquin, but Thornton said they expect to repeat as conference champions and have a good playoff run.
