opportunities of underserved populations. Anderson adds, “What is unique about these funds is a stipend is paid to the student for their time spent in class. I would encourage any student that has worked in an agriculture environment to complete the simple application process.” The grant is for anyone who has earned the majority of their wages through farm-related work in the past two years. The submitted application is good for two years. Proof of farm income is required through a W-2 or pay stubs with the application. The grant can pay up to $7,000 a year toward tuition and fees, and cover books, rent, gas, and give a $7.25/ hour training stipend while students are in class. The Eagle Nature Foundation (ENF) has just announced that Sept 4 will be its Fall Big Bird Day. On that day Mr. Terrence Ingram will count however many species of birds as he can see and hear at the Apple Creek Arboretum, Apple Creek Prairie, and Apple Creek Woods. Big Bird Day was started about seven years ago as a way to help document the loss of birds due to agricultural spraying in the area. Before the sprays 60 to 70 species of birds could be seen on most any day during this time of the year. That number of species has dropped to about 25 to 30 during the past few years. Members of the public are invited to join Mr. Ingram on Big Bird Day as he will be counting from dawn to dusk. Mr. Ingram is a Master Birder and has been a Master Bird Bander for the Fish & Wildlife Service for over 50 years. For years he had been a bird instructor at Audubon, Federation of Ontario Naturalists, and Eagle Nature Foundation camps in both the United States and Canada. He has studied the birds living in this area for over 70 years. When Mr. Ingram started his Big Bird Days, he thought that it could be a nice fundraising opportunity for ENF. Towards that end ENF is asking for pledges or donations for the number of species that he is able to document on that day. Send these pledges or donations to: ENF, 300 East Hickory St. Apple River, Ill. 61001. After the day has been conducted a complete list of those species seen or heard will be sent to all those people who have sent in pledges. ENF received close to $1200 in donations from their last Big Bird Day.
