University of Dubuque for Kids provides opportunities for area students By Tony Carton EDITOR

Last week at the University of Dubuque, while a focused group of third and fourth graders searched for comfort items relative to fairies, another group created broadsides, or broadsheets, which are stories in text and picture printed on one side of a sheet of paper and generally posted or distributed as advertisements or bulletins.

Across campus, another group learned about the fine art of making cupcakes, and still another explored the physics of flying paper airplanes. It may be summer, but dozens of area elementary and middle school students are busy attending UD for Kids classes that have unlikely but self-explanatory titles like: Extra, Extra Read All about It, The Cupcake Bake-off, Household Science Experiments, and more. The classes are a part of the Twen-

ty-Sixth Annual UD for Kids, a summer enrichment program hosted by the University of Dubuque for gifted and talented students from the area that demonstrate advanced abilities in academic, leadership, creative, and/or visual and performing arts. Nearly a dozen primary and middle school students from Stockton School District 206 received invitations and attended the one-week sessions. “UD College for Kids is a wonder-

ful opportunity for gifted and talented students to meet one another and learn something new,” said UD for Kids Fairy House in Nature Instructor Cordae Wright. “It is also an opportunity for them to set foot on a college campus and indulge in an area of interest.” Bobbie Rillie is attending classes at UD. He will be entering the fourth grade this fall in Stockton and. one of the classes he chose to attend is “The Cupcake Bake-off,” a weeklong ses-

Josh the Baby Otter character from the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation will be visiting and available for photo ops and to share infor-

mation on drowning prevention. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states the number one cause of accidental death for children 1 to 4 years of age is drowning.

sion that allows the students to develop baking skills while having fun with icing and other decorations. “We made a lot of fun things in the class,” Rillie said. “And, I got first place in the final competition.” Rillie also successfully created a catapult designed to launch marshmallows in the Household Science Experiments class. He said spending the day attending classes on a real college campus is more fun than going to his regular school in Stockton. Lillian Sikora is one of the students from Stockton invited to attend UD for Kids. She will enter the fourth grade in the fall, and this is her first year in the program. She chose to attend a class in theatre that offered her the opportunity to perform in, “The Music Man.” “It’s going great,” said Sikora. “I am so glad I have a chance to participate. This is really fun and I’m learning about how to be part of a theatrical production.” Her mom,. Hannah Sikora said she plans to encourage Lillian to attend UD for Kids every summer for as long as she is eligible. “Right now, Lilly has the dreams of a little girl and wants to be a cook or a dance instructor,” she said. “She is planning to attend college when she is older and feels UD College for Kids is definitely time well spent. The sessions are only a week long, but it provides her a real opportunity to do something completely different and even more important, something she really enjoys.” Lillian’s UD instructor Evan Fair says each child is an artist. “I just want them all to have a positive experience no matter what they do,” Fair said. “I try to show them voice and movement. I show them little tips about interacting with an audience, but it’s really all about feeling good about themselves. They’ve chosen to be here. I just give them a positive experience and let them know that they are artists.”
