SOS+ Country & Folk Jamboree The SOS+ will host a Country and Folk Jam Jamboree on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m., in Stockton’s Calvary UM Fellowship Hall. An array of music and talent will be in store for our seniors on this day. The not so skinny cook It was certainly nice to have a break from the hot weather last week.

You could really go out and enjoy the beautiful air. I know we are not done with hot weather, but it is nice to have a reprieve. This week we are featuring some more of the season’s vegetables and summer fun tastes.

This dip is a great one for a summer picnic or even for a fall tailgate party (I am not rushing the season!) because it is easy to make and good and fresh tasting. I think you could add any number of things to it if you wanted, but the tomato and olives along with the cheese makes for a great start to a southwestern dip.

Layered Ranch Dip

2 C. sour cream 1 envelope ranch dressing 1 medium tomato, chopped 1 can (4 oz.) green chilies, chopped and drained 1 can (2¼ oz.) sliced ripe olives, drained ¼ C. finely chopped red onion 1 C. shredded Monterey Jack cheese Corn chips or tortilla chips In a small bowl, mix sour cream and dressing mix; spread into a large shallow dish. Layer with tomato, green chilies, olives, onion and cheese. Refrigerate for at least an hour. Serve with chips.

Since green beans are in season and cherry tomatoes are usually plentiful in grocery stores, this salad is a good one to use the summer’s bountiful vegetable. There is nothing better than fresh green beans. If you like sweet and sour, this is a good salad for you.

1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes, halved 1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced 3 T. red wine vinegar 1½ t. sugar ¾ t. dried oregano ¾ t. salt ¼ t. garlic powder ¼ t. pepper ¼ C. olive oil In a stockpot, bring 6 cups water to a boil. Add beans in batches; cook, uncovered, 2 to 3 minutes or just until crisp-tender. Remove the beans and immediately drop into ice water.

Drain and pat dry.

Transfer beans to a large bowl.

Add tomatoes and onion; toss to combine. In a small bowl, whisk vinegar, sugar, oregano, salt, garlic powder and pepper. Gradually whisk in oil until blended. Pour over bean mixture; toss to coat. It is great to let the beans and tomatoes marinate for at least an hour.

Food shows love to use zucchini and cauliflower in many different ways. This combination of zucchini and potatoes is a good one. It is also a great way to use zucchini, because as I have said before you rarely have only a little zucchini. This recipe is a good one to pair with the confetti meatloaf that follows.

Preheat oven to 400. Line a baking sheet with foil and spray with cooking spray. Combine the beef, zucchini, onion, pepper, bread crumbs, parsley, mustard, egg white, garlic, black pepper, and salt in a bowl.

Form mixture into two loaves; place on prepared baking sheet.

Representatives of the Illinois Secretary of State and Department of Veterans Affairs were at the Stockton Public Library Tuesday, 7-23.

Services provided by representatives from the Illinois Secretary of State’s office at the Mobile Driver Services Facility included: renewal/correction of driver’s licenses, obtaining a state ID, purchasing license plate stickers, motor voter registration, and organ donor registration.

Representatives from the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs were also on hand to help veterans get their Illinois Driver’s License Designation.

ROBERT “BOB” G. BUSSIAN Robert “Bob” G. Bussian, 86, of Lena, IL passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 21, 2019. He was born at his home on Oct. 11, 1932 in Lena, IL to John and Gertrude (Solace) Bussian. Bob attended Excelsior grade school and graduated from Lena High School in 1950 where he played basketball and baseball. Bob served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska.

He married Leveta Miller on Dec. 12, 1952 in Freeport, IL; they shared 63 years prior to her passing in 2016.

Bob worked at the Lena Farmers Exchange and drove the gas and fuel oil truck, was a rural mail carrier in Galena, drove school bus for Lena-Winslow schools, served on the Lena Park Board and many years on the Lena Sports Association. He coached all levels of baseball including Little League, Pony, Colt, and American Legion. Bob was also an umpire for many years.

He was a member of the Sprague Inman American Legion Post in Lena, and served many terms as Commander of the American Legion, member of the Lena United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Lena Masonic Lodge, member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Freeport.

Bob is survived by his sons Dennis R. Bussian and Dr. Todd G. (Susan) Bussian, two grandsons; Tyler J. Bussian and Nicholas T. Bussian, sisters; Nadine Strohecker and LaVonne Mead.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Leveta in 2016.

Funeral services was held Saturday, July 27, at the Lena United Methodist church in Lena.

Pastor Keri Rainsberger and Ernest Stabenow II performed the services.

Burial will be at Lena Burial Park, where military rites will be accorded.

A memorial has been established in his name.

The wedding took place on Friday, May 24, 2019 at the First Baptist Church of Rockford, IL at 6:30 in the evening. An ice cream reception followed by a sparkler send-off for the bride and groom concluded the lovely evening.

The bride’s grandfather, Dr. Michael R. Gordon, and her father, Rev. Randall L. Hockema, officiated. The bride’s attendants were maid of honor Chloe Hockema (sister of the bride) of Lena, IL; Haleigh Boyer of Ridott, IL; Taryn Flower of Greenville, SC; Sarah Lingle of Brevard, NC; Olivia Elwart of Ypsilanti, MI; Brittany Fleming of Watertown, WI; and flower girls Kate Gibson of Rock Rapids, IA and Elise Varner of Chesapeake, VA (both cousins of the bride). The groom’s attendants were best man Josh Kruit of West Bend, WI; Bob Rankin (brother of the groom) of Yorktown, IN; Kurt Wagner of Sandusky, MI; Colton Lingle of Brevard, NC; Caleb Engel of Indianapolis, IN; and Andrew Mayo of Grafton, OH. Ushers were Luke Hockema of Lena, IL (brother of the bride) and Chase Hockema of Athens, GA (cousin of the bride).

The bride and groom are both graduates of Maranatha Baptist University of Watertown, WI. After a honeymoon trip to St. Louis, MO, the couple settled in Indianapolis where the groom is completing an internship at Colonial Hills Baptist Church. In August, the newlyweds will reside in Watertown, WI where the groom will continue his education towards a masters degree.

The Friendship Center, an Adult Day Care in Lena, IL received a donation from the Volunteer Visitors of Northwest Illinois Inc. The Friendship Center is an outreach ministry of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lena. Our mission is to provide socialization, proper nutrition, and health monitoring for adults in Lena IL and the surrounding communities, and to provide a support system for their care givers.

We are thankful for the Volunteer Visitors for remembering us in this way, the donation will help us continue to provide quality care for our clients.

Blossom end rot in tomatoes and other plants Blossom end rot is the scourge of many tomato growers. In addition to tomatoes, it can also be found in peppers, eggplant as well as squash and watermelons. When it comes to tomatoes, it is most commonly seen on larger fruited varieties, with long-fruited varieties (Roma type) being more susceptible than round varieties. Blossom end rot starts as a light tan water-soaked lesion (spot) at the end of the fruit where the blossom was (opposite end from the stem). The lesion will continue to grow and eventually turn black and leathery. Additionally, fungi and bacteria will often move in and case tissues to decay.

Contrary to popular belief, blossom end rot is not caused by a disease or insects. Blossom end rot is actually a physiological disorder.

The cause of blossom end rot is poorly understood, it has commonly been believed that it is caused by low levels of calcium in developing fruit.

There are several reasons why plants may not be getting enough calcium. A lack of calcium in the soil is usually not the issue. Most of the time there is sufficient calcium in the soil, but the ability of the plant to take it up can be a problem.

Calcium uptake by plants depends on active transpiration (leaves loose water in order to take up more water as well as nutrients from the soil, among other things) and anything that inhibits transpiration can inhibit calcium uptake. Additionally, leaves transpire more than the fruit so calcium moves into the leaves easier than the fruit. Factors that can contribute to blossom end rot include drought stress, fluctuating soil moisture, cold soils, waterlogged soils, or rapid vegetative growth due to excessive nitrogen fertilization.

High concentrations of ammonium, potassium, and magnesium in the soil can also inhibit calcium uptake.

Others argue that cause of blossom end rot is abiotic stress to the plants, not a lack of calcium. Some experiments have shown that fruit in the early stages of developing blossom end rot have similar calcium levels to healthy fruit. These stresses, whether they be drought, high light intensity, heat cause cells in the fruits to die. The death of these cells results in blossom end rot.

Regardless of what school of thought you prescribe to, there are several different things you can do to try and prevent blossom end rot. * Avoid excessive fertilization

of plants, especially with fertilizers using ammonium as their nitrogen source (ammonium competes with calcium uptake), during early fruiting. * Make sure to provide adequate moisture from fruit formation to maturity. Using mulch can help conserve soil moisture an even out the moisture in the soil. * Avoid frequent shallow watering. Instead, water deeply. In general, plants need about one inch of moisture per week, whether that is from rain or irrigation. If hot dry weather is predicted make sure plants are well watered before it arrives. * Choose varieties that are less prone to developing blossom end rot such as Celebrity, Mountain Pride, and cherry tomatoes. * If you feel like a lack of soil calcium is your problem make sure you conduct a soil test to see if your soil actually needs any.

Foliar applications of calcium don’t help much because there is poor absorption and movement of the calcium to the fruit. Unfortunately once a fruit is suffering from blossom end rot there is nothing you can do, so it is best to remove the fruit and discard them.

Root Beer Floats are part of summer’s great dessert treats. I love Sprecher’s Root beer best, and A & W comes in at a close second. I would recommend either one for this pie. McCormick makes a good root beer extract too. If you want a delicious root beer dessert and can’t have the real thing, this one would be good.

Root Beer Float Pie

22 cream filled vanilla sandwich cookies (Golden Oreos) ¼ C. salted butter, melted 1½ C. heavy whipping cream, divided ½ C. whole milk ½ C. root beer (not diet) 1 box (3.4 oz.) vanilla instant pudding mix 1¼ t. Watkins root beer extract 1 t. sugar Garnish with maraschino cherries In the work bowl of a food processor, place cookies; process until finely ground. Add melted butter and process until combined. Reserve 2 t. crumb mixture. Press remaining crumb mixture into bottom and up the sides of a 9 inch pie plate.

In a small bowl, beat ½ C. cream with a mixer at high speed until stiff peaks form. In a large bowl, beat milk, root beer, pudding mix and extract with a mixer at medium speed until thickened, about 2 minutes.

Fold in whipped cream. Spread fill-

ing into prepared crust.

In a medium bowl, beat sugar and remaining 1 cup of cream with a mixer at high speed until peaks form.

Spread onto pie, and sprinkle with reserved 2 tablespoons of crumb mixture. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours before serving or overnight.

Garnish with cherries if desired.

I got my tree down, and it looks really bare and pretty ugly in my backyard. I imagine the lawn mowing guys like it better because it is easier to mow. I now have to get the stump removed and the roof fixed. That may take a few weeks. I was grateful for all the offers of help and the concern everyone had for my safety. It is nice to live in a small town where people care about each other.

I am enjoying fresh green beans, little onions, and the last of my lettuce. I know there are some areas that are having corn boils. I can’t imagine that they are using local corn, but I have been wrong before.

Celebrate the Lena Fire Department’s Sesquicentennial!

1:00 p.m.: Parade begins at the Lena Fire Station, includes the streets of Railroad and Main.

Ends at the Lena Fire Station.

2 - 5 p.m.: Memorial dedication with station tours to follow for two hours after the ceremony.

Explore the station and view the vehicles and equipment, as well as interact with current and former volunteer firefighters.

A meal will be served.
