The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation will host family day programs focused on insects on July 23 and July 30 at the foundation’s Casper Bluff Land & Water Reserve.
Family nature program explores insects “Insectopia” family day events are set for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays, July 23 and July 30, at the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation’s Casper Bluff Land & Water Reserve near Galena. “Every tiny buzzing, crawling and hovering insect has an important job in our ecosystem,” according to a foundation news release. “Pollinators, decomposers, soil movers and us all rely on each other for survival.” The insect program will include a make-and-take prairie seed bomb (to encourage in-
sect diversity in your yard), a “Web of Life” activity to explore reliance on insects and a visit to no-kill insect traps to get a close-up look at the insect population at Casper Bluff, the release said. The programs are open to public with a maximum of 15 children per event. An RSVP is required by going online to jdcf.org/events. Casper Bluff Land & Water Reserve, located at 870 S. Pilot Knob Road, Galena, is open daily dawn to dusk for free. For more information, go online to jdcf.org.

The Stephenson County Fair is back in town Tuesday, July 27, through Saturday, July 31. Due to the pandemic, the Stephenson County Fair Association canceled the 2020 fair. This year’s revived event includes Saturday lawn mower races, a Thursday calf-scramble for the kids, truck and tractor pulls, a carnival complete with 22 rides, food vendors, pageants, live entertainment, a livestock show every night, 4-H competitions and face painting. Organizers ask that people social distance and sanitize their hands regularly at the hand-washing stations on the grounds. Masks are not required to attend the fair, but there will be a free vaccination clinic from noon to 9 p.m. all week, according to Lori Tessendorf, executive manager of the Stephenson County Fair Association.
