Gracie Keleher is a 13 year old eight grader in Stockton. Gracie was born with Downs Syndrome. 1 of every 691 children will be born with Down syndrome. That number translates to about five thousand children per year being born with the syndrome here in the United States. Down syndrome is caused by Chromosome number 21, which is an extra chromosome compared to the standard number found in humans. In the past, the average life expectancy for a child born with Down syndrome was 25 years. Since 1983, however, the life expectancy has increased to 60 years of age. The increase is in great part due to research, treatment and a better understanding of the needs of children born with this syndrome. Although born with Down Syndrome, neither Gracie, nor her mother, Ashley Broshous, have ever thought of Gracie’s life as having been handicapped. On the contrary, Gracie has been active in school, enjoys meeting new people and enjoys cooking, especially baking. Ashley Broshous said, “Gracie has the biggest heart in the world. She likes people and wants to help them when they’re in need.” Gracie and her mom are planning to attend a retreat in September at the Great Wolf Lodge in Gurnee, Illinois. The Great Wolf Lodge is a resort that features an indoor eighty thousand square foot water park along with attractions aimed at the young, such as a climbing wall, miniature golf, peak rope courses and more. This retreat will be something special. It will be a gathering of members
of the International Down Syndrome Community. As many as 800 people will be in attendance. Broshous said, “This is an opportunity for those children and adults who have Down syndrome to come together along with their families. In addition to fun activities it’s an opportunity for families to discuss their concerns and problems and offer support to one another. “When I spoke with Gracie about this, we talked about the number of families who couldn’t attend. She was surprised and saddened. Then she told me that she wanted to do something to help more people come to the retreat. Then she decided that she could help by doing one of her favorite things which is bake. “Gracie and I decided we could do a bake sale. In addition to baking, Gracie loves to make lemonade shakeups, so we’ll be offering those also.” As often is the case, the community steps up and begins helping. Cajun Jack’s Bar and Grill has offered their location for the event. The sale and refreshments will be held on the patio next to the restaurant. Broshous said, “We’d like everyone to come out and see Gracie and me. We could also use some help. If anyone would like to donate some baked goods or other homemade items, we would really appreciate it.” For those interested in attending, Gracie’s bake sale will be held on July 7, from 11 a.m. until closing. Cajun Jack’ is located at 1336 U.S. Highway 20, Elizabeth, Illinois. Anyone interested in donating baked goods or making some other donation to Gracie’s effort can contact Ashley Broshous at 815541-5067. Broshous and Cajun Jack’s both have a Facebook page.
