Buddy bench promotes inclusion
Warren Elementary School students try out the new buddy bench on the playground. The buddy bench is designed to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground. The bench was funded through the Roger Teuscher Memorial. Teuscher, who passed away in 2019, served as Warren Elementary School principal for more than 25 years and promoted positive relationships between students.
With people ready to travel and summer vacations starting, Illinois agritourism is prime for the newest tourism trends — outdoors, family oriented, road-trip accessible and food, especially local food. “People are excited to do family activities on the farm. They’ve been with their families inside and they want to do things outside, and it feels safe. Our current pickyour-own strawberry season was exceptional,” said Chris Eckert, vice president of retail for Eckert Inc. The state’s new tourism campaign, “Time for Me to Drive,” covers every region
of the state and highlights road trip itineraries showcasing experiences unique to Illinois. During the pandemic, people became more interested in outdoor activities, and farms can capitalize on that interest, said Karla Flannery, deputy director of the Illinois Office of Tourism. The tourism campaign launched ahead of the Memorial Day weekend when an estimated 1.7 million Illinois residents were expected to travel, according to AAA. In addition to in-state promotions, new ads encouraged travelers from seven states to visit Illinois.

Warhawks will return some quality talent next season. Sophomores Elaina Martin and Lauren Kehl both had an exceptional season, as they were named First Team All-Conference, giving the Warhawks six All-Conference players in total. Martin also was named the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player, while Kehl was named Most Valuable Pitcher. Together, they will hope to lead the way to another conference championship as juniors, in 2022. Although the standings were not so generous to the River Ridge-Scales Mound Wildcats, the team has a promising future. Despite going 2-6 in conference play and 5-14 overall, two young Wildcats were recognized for their exceptional play in 2021. Sophomore Mickayla Bass and freshman Amie Richmond led the way for the Wildcats this year, and they were both named First Team All-Conference.

Employees of Eckert’s, located in southwestern Illinois, display some of the farm’s pumpkins last fall. Pumpkin sales skyrocketed as people looked for safe, outdoor family activities during the pandemic. Tourism officials look to keep the popularity of agritourism rolling this summer.
