Planting literacy By Jeni Pearce
READING TEACHER, STOCKTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go!” Dr. Seuss With the spirit of Dr. Seuss in mind, four Free Little Libraries were “planted” in the Village of Stockton. Free Little Libraries are a free book exchange featuring a box of books on a post. “Take a book, share a book” is the motto of the Free Little Library organization. The boxes will feature children’s and young adult books. Stockton Elementary reading teacher Jeni Pearce received the funds for the Little Libraries from the Illinois Education Association Schools and Community Outreach by Educators Grant, or SCORE
Grant. The focus of the grant was to increase access to reading material for the children of Stockton. The Wa-Tan-Ye organization, the Stockton Public Library, and the Village of Stockton are the community partners for the project. The Village of Stockton installed the boxes on Wednesday, May 29. The Free Little Libraries are located at the elementary school, on the north side of the Freeport Health Network (FHN) office, on Simmons street at Country Aire Mobile Estates, and on Mathilda Drive at North Prairie Apartments. Volunteers will be checking the boxes weekly. For more information about Free Little Libraries go to littlefreelibrary. org. To donate books or make a financial donation contact Stockton Elementary School at 947-3321.

AmeriCorps NCCC assists JDCF in restoration of Horseshoe Mound Preserve An AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team served with the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation from May 6 until May 30. The team is helping to complete restoration on the newly acquired addition to Horseshoe Mound Preserve. The AmeriCorps NCCC team of nine from the North Central Region campus in Vinton, Iowa is girdling trees around the oaks to help with regeneration, planting trees, staining picnic tables, clearing brush, and conducting stream monitoring Through their service, AmeriCorps NCCC members are helping educate people about land stewardship and resource conservation as well as the importance of having healthy native habitats. “On this project I’m acquiring new skills and have the opportunity to work on a project that focuses on the environment. This is an area of service I am passionate about, and I
am excited to learn more about the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation by working closely with them,” says AmeriCorps NCCC member Claysen from Mount Pleasant, SC. The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation was founded in 1993 with the purpose of permanently protecting and preserving land for the lasting well-being of people and wildlife. They accomplish this mission by educating people about land stewardship and resource conservation, restoring and maintaining native habitats, protecting land from inappropriate development, supporting recreation that promotes appreciation of natural resources, and partnering with other like-minded organizations. AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and its FEMA Corps unit engages up to 2,800 young Americans in a fulltime, 10-month commitment to service each year. AmeriCorps NCCC
members address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, and urban and rural development; FEMA Corps members are solely dedicated to disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery work. The programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). CNCS is a federal agency that engages millions of Americans in service through its AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs and leads the nation’s volunteering and service efforts.
