Obituary

W. DON NESEMEIER W. Don Nesemeier, age 86, of rural Shannon, Illinois passed away Friday, May 20, at Allure of Mt. Carroll Nursing Center.

He was born Oct. 1, 1935, near Shannon on the family farm, the son of William and Laura (Moring) Nesemeier.

He is a graduate of the Freeport High School with the Class of 1953. On September 29, 1956, Don married Charlotte Rye. They raised a daughter Terry and celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Don farmed most of his life.

He also served as the Shannon Township Road Commissioner for six years. He was a member of the Elks Club, Germania Club and Shannon Volunteer Fire Department.

Don enjoyed working on his home, working outside on his land, and woodworking.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Charlotte of rural Shannon; his daughter, Terry Nesemeier-Whitson (Jeff Whitson) of Forreston; a granddaughter, Brittany (Chris) Sherden; a great-grandson, Lucas; and a sister, Janis Peterson of Georgia. Don is preceded in death by both parents and his siblings, Carolyn Byington, Stanley Nesemeier and Betty Erdmier.

A private, family Celebration of Life will be held.

Will interest rate hike slow farmland market?

The Federal Reserve approved a rare half-percentage-point interest rate hike this month as it attempts to reel in inflation.

The move marked the first time the Fed increased interest rates by .5 percent, or 50 basis points, since 2000. Rate increases often occur by quarter-point increments.

It raises the central bank’s benchmark federal-funds rate to a target range between .75 percent and 1 percent. The Fed also announced plans to shrink its $9 trillion asset portfolio starting next month to ease inflation, which jumped 8.5 percent in March—the highest since 1981.

Overall, the Fed’s goal with the interest rate hikes is to tamp down demand for goods and services to help ease inflation. It previously boosted rates by 25 basis points in March. But will higher rates also slow the farmland market?

Ray Brownfield, designated managing broker/owner of Land Pro LLC based in Oswego, isn’t necessarily sold. He looks for commodity prices to remain strong, due in part to a number of supply shocks around the world, and continue to support farmland values.

Investors also see farmland as a hedge against inflation.

“For those who for various reasons are contemplating the

sale of their farmland, the price of their land will most likely remain strong even with higher interest rates,” Brownfield said. “On the other side, investors continue to see the stability of a farmland investment and the continued global need for production from this land.”

Land Pro reported recent farmland sales in northern Illinois fetched $18,200 per acre in Kendall County and $20,100 per acre in LaSalle County in midApril.

Linda Brier, area real estate manager for Farmers National Co., also doesn’t foresee a major downturn in the farmland market any time soon.

“As long as commodity prices stay up and there’s still uncertainty with inflation, investors are competing against farmers,” she told FarmWeek just before the latest rate hike.

Farmers National Co. recently reported the number of farmland auctions increased 65 percent— the amount of acres sold jumped 106 percent and the value of those auction sales climbed 130 percent in the past six months.

Stephenson County youth give back The 4-H youth in Stephenson County have learned that one way of giving back is through using their hands for larger service. Stephenson County 4-H Ambassador’s planned and conducted a community service project this year that involved making handmade tie-blankets for those in need. The Ambassador team of 9, along with 10 local 4-H clubs, made 31 tie blankets that were donated locally to the Madonna Renewal Center and Pearl Pavilion.

Happiness is …

I remember a book from early childhood written

by Charles Schulz. It was titled, “Happiness Is” and it caused quite a stir amongst the preschool crowd (and beyond). For good reason.

Its message was simple, meaningful, ageless and timeless.

So timeless, in fact, that its simple idea remains meaningful and ageless to this day. Happiness is … everywhere.

It is all around us. It is ours for the finding and the taking. It is where each of us chooses to see it. Schulz’s book started with “Happiness is a warm puppy,” and it is in that vein where I’ll start.

Happiness is: Puppy breath.

A new and empty garbage can liner, that someone other than you installed—without you knowing.

Laundry day—after it’s done.

An unloaded dishwasher.

Knowing you did the best you could.

Birds chirping.

A smile from a stranger.

A knowing glance.

Flipping the light switch and the room lights up.

Putting the key in the ignition and the car starts.

Family get-togethers, no matter the day, time or occasion.

Congratulations to Stockton FFA members Charlie Breed and Alexi Haas for winning their division at the State Agriscience Fair in the food science division with their project that explored the effectiveness of different cleaning products on kitchen surfaces. From Lena’s Kitchen The not so skinny cook

Summer is officially open.

Memorial Day ushered in the beginning days of the season that we have all been waiting for. School is out, graduations are over, summer baseball and softball have begun, and the pool is open. Several people have asked me, “Where did May go?” Since we are in summer, cookouts and picnics will be happening. I have even seen newspaper announcements for reunions. This week we have some recipes you could use for these gatherings. Enjoy the week of summer’s beginnings!

Chunky Crab Dip

If you are looking for a dip for the summer appetizer that is

easy to make and works well on veggies and garlic rounds, this dip will fill the bill. There is a note at the end that gives you another great recipe!

4 oz. cream cheese, softened 2 T. lemon juice ¼ C. sour cream 1 t. grated lemon zest 1 can (6 oz.) crabmeat drained or 1 C. imitation crab chopped into pieces 1 T. chopped chives 1 T. chopped parsley ½ t. Old Bay seasoning In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, lemon juice, sour cream, and zest. Stir in crab, chives, parsley, and Old Bay. Transfer to a bowl. Cover and chill for at least an hour before serving. Serve with veggies or garlic rounds. Note: you can substitute shrimp for crab by adding 1 C. chopped small, cooked shrimp, 1 T. lime juice for the lemon juice, ½ t. lime zest for lemon zest, chopped cilantro for parsley, and 3 chopped green onions for the chives. Add ½ t. chili powder instead of the Old Bay. Continue with the recipe as directed.

Spinach and Strawberry Salad with Rhubarb

This rhubarb dressing takes a spinach and strawberry salad in a refreshing direction. Rhubarb is in season, so it is time to use it in new ways.

1 C. fresh or frozen sliced rhubarb ½ C. water 2 T. honey 2 T. rice wine vinegar or white vinegar 1 t. salt 2 T. olive oil 10 oz. baby spinach (12 C.) 1½ C. sliced strawberries ¼ C. chopped toasted pecans Combine the rhubarb and water in a small saucepan.

Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes until the rhubarb is soft and the liquid has reduced by half. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

Place the rhubarb mixture into a blender with the honey, sugar, mustard, and salt. Pulse until smooth. With the motor running, slowly pour in the oil.

Strain into a bowl.

Place the spinach in a large salad bowl. Top with strawberries. Drizzle the vinaigrette summons was duly issued over the top and toss gently to out of said Court against coat. Sprinkle with pecans.

In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink, 8 to 10 minutes, breaking into crumbles; drain. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and pepper; cook and stir until tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in beef, Worcestershire sauce, noodles, and soups. Transfer to a greased 3 qt. baking dish; top with cheese. Cheesecake Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies

This unique recipe for basic chocolate chip cookies takes the basic to over the top. The secret to making these is to make sure the dough is well chilled.

1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened ½ C. powdered sugar ¾ C. butter, softened ¾ C. white sugar ¾ C. packed brown sugar 2 eggs 4 t. vanilla 2¼ C. plus 2 T. flour 1 t. baking soda ¼ t. salt 1 pkg. (12 oz.) semisweet chocolate chips Preheat the oven to 350.

Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Beat together the cream cheese and powdered sugar in a bowl with an electric mixer at medium-high speed until combined. Chill, covered, at least 1 hour or until ready to use.

Beat together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar with a mixer at medium speed until creamy, 1 to 2 minutes.

Beat in eggs and vanilla until well blended, about 30 seconds.

In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually add to butter mixture, beating at low speed until just blended. Add chocolate chips, beating until blended.

Chill at least 30 minutes or up to an hour.

Scoop rounded tablespoons of cookie dough and arrange 3 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Gently flatten each scoop to about 2½ inches in diameter. Drop in rounded teaspoon of cream cheese filling in the center of each cookie. With lightly floured hands, gently

wrap the dough around cream cheese mixture and shape into a ball; press cookies slightly until about 2 inches in diameter. Keep remaining dough and filling chilled while working. Bake until golden and set around the edges, 12 to 14 minutes. Let cool on baking sheet 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack; let cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough and cream cheese mixture. Cooled cookies can be store, chilled, in an airtight container up to 3 days or frozen up to 3 months.

Strawberry Rhubarb Dump Cake

If you are looking for an easy dessert recipe, this cake is one for you to try. The spices and the spice cake make for a different and great tasting way to use up that rhubarb.

4 C. chopped fresh or frozen rhubarb 4 C. quartered fresh strawberries ¼ C. orange juice 1 T. sugar 1 t. cinnamon ¼ t. ground nutmeg ¼ t. ground cardamom ¾ C. butter, melted and divided 1 pkg. spice cake mix, regular size Whipped cream Preheat the oven to 350. In a large bowl, combine the rhubarb, strawberries, orange juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom. Transfer to a greased 9 x 13 baking pan. Drizzle with 3 T. butter; sprinkle with cake mix. Top with remaining butter.

Bake until golden brown and bubbly, 45 to 55 minutes. Serve warm. Top with whipped cream

The cemetery pots are home and grace my front porch. I just have to keep them alive for the rest of the summer. The deck furniture has been cleaned, and I am hoping to have some nice weather that isn’t beastly hot so that I can use it. I bought my lavender plant to hopefully ward off mosquitoes. I said last week that I patiently wait for the first of the garden lettuce. I know fresh strawberries will be coming soon. I love the summer produce that we are lucky enough to have. Sisters live dream to graduate together with nursing degrees from Highland

Growing up in the Sterling-Rock Falls area, Amanda Larry and her sister Ashleigh Chapman of Sterling graduated from high school not thinking about the career path toward a nursing career until they both married and raised families.

Both worked in the healthcare field, Larry as a Medical Assistant, and Chapman as a CNA. It would take a dream Larry had one night that told her the sisters should return to school to study and become registered nurses. They talked it over, explored colleges that would fit their needs, and found the part-time nursing program through Highland Community College to fit their academic needs while making it possible for them to still work and provide for their families.

After winning their first game of the season, the Lena-Winslow boys’ varsity basketball squad went on a five-game losing streak.

After a tough loss to a Belleville, Wisconsin team, the Panthers struggled to recover. They went on to lose their next four, three of which were losses by ten points or less.

With a record of 2-6, the Panthers prepared to play in

handing the Panthers their seventh loss of the season.

Keep in mind that most piercers are unregulated and have no set training standards or hygiene standards to meet.

Pick a licensed piercer with a good track record and high sterilization standards.

If they can’t answer your questions about safety and sanitation, choose someone else. Make sure that the business sanitizes all of its tools before each client and the piercers wash their hands

Congratulations to the Warhawk freshmansophomore team for winning the Byron tournament. In the first game of the day the Warhawks beat DuPec 132. Treyton Pafford pitched a complete game for the victory. In the second game the Warhawks beat Rock Falls 11-0. Colby Tucker had a complete game victory. Will Stietz had a 2-run homer. In the final game the Warhawks beat Byron 7-5. Will Stietz pitched four innings for the win and Colby Tucker got the save by striking out the side in the last inning. They finished their undefeated season at 190.
