Hornets beat West Carroll for second win VOL. 88 • NO. 19
By Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT
The Scales Mound-River Ridge Hornets got their second win in the month of April when they faced off with the West Carroll Thunder on Monday, April 25. The Hornets came into the game with a record of just 1-7. The Thunder sat just ahead of them with an overall record of 2-10. These teams faced off earlier this season in a matchup that saw the Thunder beat the Hornets by a score of 8-2. This time around SM-RR would have their best offensive performance of the season as they scored runs aplenty. They would need them to keep up with the Thunder in the early innings, as West Carroll

took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Hornets got their own first inning rally started in the bottom half when Millie Boden doubled to center field. Boden’s baserunning would lead to the Hornets’ first run as a steal of third and a passed ball allowed Boden to reach home safely. Later in the inning with two outs, another passed ball would allow Mickayla Bass to score, tying the game at 2-2. After a scoreless second West Carroll would jump back into the lead with another tworun inning. The Hornets would respond with a run in the bottom half. Amie Richmond got the inning started with a ground ball that turned into her reaching third base after
an error at first base. One out later Richmond would score on a ground out to the left side, bringing the Hornets within one. The Thunder would go on to score another run in the top of the fourth, leaving the Hornets trailing 5-3. After playing keep up through the first few innings, the SM-RR offense finally broke free in the bottom of the fourth. After Celia Turner was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Emily Wurster took a walk, putting runners in scoring position. With one out, Bass would double to the right side, driving in two runs and eventually reaching third on an errant throw. Richmond followed up with a double of her own, this one a fly ball to right
field, giving the Hornets their first lead of the game as they went up 6-5. SM-RR then went on a massive two-out rally. After Abigail Frank was walked and Evelyn Walters was hit by a pitch, Josie Korte singled to the right side, driving in Richmond to score. An error by West Carroll’s second baseman on the following at bat would allow the Hornets to go up 9-5. Boden then hit the third double of the inning as she drove in two more runs. Bass followed up with a single to left, and another West Carroll error put the Hornets up 13-5. SM-RR went from playing catchup to looking at an opportunity to end the game early in just half an inning. A

single by Laiken Haas would give the Hornets a ten-run lead as she drove in Richmond and Bass to score. Finally, Walters hit the fourth double of the inning as she drove in two more runs, putting the Hornets up 17-5. With a 14 run inning, the Hornets managed to put themselves in a position to pick up their second win of the season in just four and a half innings. The Thunder would have needed at least three runs in the top of the fifth to keep the game alive. Despite allowing one run off an error, a pair of strikeouts by Bass, the SM-RR pitcher, would bring an end to the game. The Hornets combined for ten hits on the game, eight of which came from four Hornets who all had multiple hits on the day. Bass led the way at the plate, going two for three
with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Boden was equally impressive, going two for four with a pair of runs and a pair of RBI. Richmond had an exceptional day, going two for three at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI. Haas was the fourth Hornet with multiple hits, going two for four with one run scored and a pair of RBI. Walters was one for two with two RBI, and Korte was one for four with one run scored and a RBI. Bass pitched all five innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs, while striking out four and walking three. After the 17-6 victory, the Hornets went on to drop games against Fulton and East Dubuque. SM-RR will look to bounce back into the win column on Thursday, May 5, when they travel to face off with the Galena Pirates.
