Winners all around
The Stockton Fire Department held a raffle for the Mark Kruse benefit, with more than 100 items donated. Due to social distancing, the raffle was held as a live Facebook event with Randy Baysinger as the announcer. Alex Kriebs and Mike Schultz, new to the department, pulled the ticket for the winning prize. More than $35,000 was raised at the benefit and given to the Kruse family.
Annual count yields 42 species of birds The Eagle Nature Foundation sponsored a Big Bird Day at Apple Creek Arboretum, Prairie and Woods near Apple River on May 9. Master birder Terrence Ingram documented 42 different species of birds from dawn to dusk. Only a single bird of many species was seen or heard, including a redtailed hawk, barred owl, greathomed owl, common flicker, whitebreasted nuthatch, orchard oriole, indigo bunting and vesper and field sparrows. He was not able to document some common birds, such as turkey, pheasant, wood duck, bluebird, kingbird, hairy and pileated woodpeckers, tufted titmouse, white-throated and swamp sparrows or any flycatchers, vireos or warblers. Some of these were seen the day before or day after Big Bird Day. Ingram started this event several
years ago to document the loss of birds due to agricultural spraying in the area. “Our modem agricultural practices of clearing the landscape and constantly spraying the poisons has got to stop if we are to have any bird life survive,” Ingram said in a news release. “Without the birds, we are going to be facing problems with all of the insects that can adapt to these farm practices.” To help the Eagle Nature Foundation in its efforts to preserve the bald eagle, Ingram uses this event as a fundraiser. He is asking people to pledge dollars for every species of bird he saw on May 9 or simply donate. Pledges should be sent to Eagle Nature Foundation, 300 E. Hickory St., Apple River, IL 61001. For more information, contact Ingram at that address or call 815594-2306.
