Undefeated River Ridge football rolls on By Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT
The River Ridge Wildcats and head coach Doug Nicholson are coming off a 7-3 season in which they reached the second round of the 8 man Illinois High School Football playoffs. Still, that was more than a year ago, and it would be hard to know what to expect from the Wildcats during this spring season. The Wildcats were one of the more athletic teams in the league in 2019 and Nicholson had hoped that would carry over to this season, noting that their speed would be their biggest strong suit. River Ridge kicked off their 2021 spring season with a tough matchup against Hiawatha. It was possibly their toughest opponent of the season, despite it only being week one. Still, the Wildcats had the athletic advantage and it showed, as they went on to win by a score of 18-6. In week two, the Wildcats broke out in blowout fashion as they topped North Fulton 38-13. Sitting at 2-0 and looking even better than 2019, River Ridge quickly stepped up as one of the best teams in eight-man football this season. On April 1, River Ridge
and Hiawatha faced off for the second time this season in what was projected to be one of the top games in eight man this season. The Wildcats came into the game ranked as the No. 2 team in the league, while Hiawatha sat close behind as the fourth-ranked team. Coming off an 18-6 game just a few weeks prior, many people thought they could expect another exciting matchup this time around. River Ridge quickly ruined those expectations as they ran away with yet another blowout victory. This time, the Wildcats beat Hiawatha by a score of 42-8 in a game that was entirely different from their week one matchup. River Ridge quickly became the team to beat. The Wildcats picked up their fourth win of the season when they routed the Flanagan Falcons 40-0 on April 9. Sitting with a record of 4-0 and playing their best ball with three blowout victories in a row, River Ridge found themselves in a position to get some vengeance when they faced off with their rivals in the Polo Marcos. It may have been more than a year ago, but Polo defeated River Ridge

The Illinois State Police has given another 150-day extension to people whose firearms owners identification cards or concealed carry licenses have expired due to a backlog in processing renewal applications. A panel of state lawmakers gave approval April 13 to the emergency rule after ISP officials assured them that the agency had made significant progress toward clearing a backlog of renewal applications.
“I wouldn’t say we’re over the hump. We’re on top of it,” ISP Lt. Greg Hacker, who heads the agency’s Firearms Services Bureau, told the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules. “Over the past three months, our metrics have shown us that we are starting to bend the curve in our direction.” Under the emergency rule, a FOID card or CCL that has expired since the start of the pandemic is still considered valid as long as the holder has applied for renewal, paid the required fees and the card
is not subject to revocation, meaning the person has not committed an offense that would otherwise disqualify them from holding the permit. Yvette Loizon, ISP’s general counsel, said that in the month of March alone, the agency received 14,847 renewal applications, and it approved 67,847 applications, the largest number of approvals in a single month in more than a year. ISP saw a huge increase in renewal applications last year,
