With an 11-4-1 season mark heading into this past weekend of games, the co-op of Stockton and Warren continue to maintain control in the race for the rights to claim the title of the best from the NUIC-West. Within the conference the Warhawks are 6-1. West Carroll finds itself tied in conference losses for the season. Based on the information available however, Stockton and Warren’s athletes have had more chances to take the field. The Thunder carried a 4-1 West mark through Easter. Eastland is one win behind Stockton and Warren, but they have one loss more as well. They are 5-2 in the NUIC-West. Pearl City is a distant fourth at this time. They are 3-4 in the West. It is paired with an 0-4 non-conference mark. As the season rolls along, things are expected to get a lot tighter in the NUIC. In non-conference play on Friday, April 14, the Warhawks split a double-header with Carlinville. They won the opener 6-2, but fell in the night cap 7-6. In the loss Stockton/ Warren pushed Carlinville into extra innings, before eventually succumbing. The Warhawks opened game two with a quick strike. They got on the board after finding an open path through the infield. The 1-0 lead worked into the bottom of the first. Carlinville responded with two runs of its own. Warren/Stockton and their hosts were scoreless in the second and then
began exchanging inning-wins. As the top of the third played through, the Warhawks added two runs to the total and collected the 3-2 lead. The Cavaliers would not score in the bottom of the third but found their swing in the bottom of the fourth. Carlinville scored two runs in the fourth inning and regained the onerun edge, 4-3, with three innings to play. In the top of the fifth it was Stockton/Warren’s turn to strike again. They punished pitching and split defenders. Their efforts produced a three run inning and a two-run lead heading into the home half. The Warhawks were in front 6-4. Carlinville was shut out in the frame. Both teams were shutout in the sixth inning. As the top of the seventh arrived, the Warhawks still held a two-run advantage, 6-4. They would not add to the lead and moved to the bottom of the seventh, hoping to hold and go home. It wouldn’t happen. The Cavaliers offense jumped out of the box. The two runs scored by the time the third out was recorded forced the match into extra innings. The Cavaliers closer was better in the eighth. The co-op of Stockton and Warren did not score. The game remained tied heading to the bottom of the eighth. Fortune found Carlinville in the bottom of the inning. They manufactured the run they needed and forced the split with Stockton/Warren as they held on for the 7-6 win.
