On Wednesday, Feb. 26, the Stockton Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting to present a year in review and elect officers for 2019. The business community was well represented with more than 40 people present. Marie’s Wood Carving, Wurster Sales and Service, Subway and Ace Hardware, as well as many other businesses had representatives in attendance. President Marci Shubert addressed the issue of the Chambers finances stating that the efforts of the past year have once again made the organization financially sound. The Chamber will be awarding a $1500 scholarship or sponsorship to a Stockton student this coming year. The recipient and date of the award are yet to be determined. The Chambers 2018 golf outing was a success and a 2019 golf outing has been tentatively scheduled for September with the location to be determined. “2018 was a good year,” Shubert said. “We’ve made strides in several areas. The Christmas Walk has continued to grow. Speaking of which, we owe Stockton, as well as Ace Hardware a big thanks. Ace Hardware seems to have a limitless supply of electrical extension cords available, while the village has allowed us to hook up into their streetlight system for power when needed. “Fall into Stockton continues to grow. The number of participants has been increasing and the auto show portion has shown increased interest. There has even been some talk of doing a video of the auto show for broadcasting on line. The custom-made awards that are given at the auto show are much sought after. “We’re now in a position to offer booth spaces to nonprofit organizations for only $7. And the number of booths has increased from 32 to 50.” Vice President Amanda Pierce gave a presentation on the idea behind the marketing of Stockton as a place to shop, dine, visit or live. Her program, The Power of a Good Brand included a Ted Talk video, explaining the differ-

ence between marketing and branding. Pierce said, “Anyone can tell the public what they have to offer. Anyone can tell a potential visitor what we do. More importantly, it’s important for us tell the public why we do what we do. We can make someone’s visit to Stockton an enjoyable experience because we are passionate about Stockton. We’re passionate because Stockton is a great place to visit, live, work and own a business.” Shubert also gave an overview of the Chambers successful effort to become a recipient of the Illinois Governors Home Town Award. Shubert said, “There’s more to it than just the application. Mary Stayner and I drove to Springfield to make a presentation to the governing board. They asked a lot of questions during the 20-minute presentation. They liked what they heard, but I think the winner was the story about Sam and Brooke Ven Huizen who recently got married. They had wanted everything involved in that special day to come from a local business. “Sam and Brooke had their reception at Apple Canyon Lake, purchased all of their beverages from Coxy’s, had Subway provide foot long sandwiches for the wedding parties lunch, Brooke bought her gown in Galena and there was so much more.” Both Sam and Brooke Ven Huizen were attending the meeting. Sam Ven Huizen said, “We grew up here. This is our home. Our parents and grandparents are from the area. This was a way of really making this community a part of our wedding.” Brooke Ven Huizen said, “Our wedding was a very special day. Now, just driving through town and looking around we relive that day all over again in small pieces.” During her presentation and comments, Marci Shubert had mentioned that it’s important for the Chamber to encourage area youth to become involved because they are the future. During the election portion of the meeting Sam Ven Huizen became one of the new members of the Board of Directors.
