Maggie Guenzler had been teaching in Wisconsin for 12 years before returning to the family farming business. Now, Guenzler is with the Stockton Middle and High Schools, working as a substitute teacher. One of Guenzler’s tasks is helping oversee the Servant Leadership program. Guenzler said, “For those not familiar with the Servant Leadership Program, it is a working plan that helps students get involved in community service. This two-year program offers high school students the opportunity to earn 8 college credits over a 2-year period.” What is a Servant Leader? The servant leader is a servant first. With a natural desire to serve, the individual eventually aspires to lead. Entering the Servant Leadership Program in their junior year, these students learn the skills of management and leadership. Guenzler said, “There’s more to the program than just doing volunteer work. The program is a learning experience as well. Students are required to attend a training session at Highland Community College (HCC) once a month on Saturday mornings. Each student must participate in a regional service project as well as a local service project. Students must create a portfolio as well. “Dan Dick, the Major Gifts Officer at HCC has been a big help. He does a great job with kids at training and planning sessions where they learn to work together. He really helps kids develop the individual character goals that are at the heart of this program” The University of Illinois at Chicago has studied the effects that the Servant Leadership Program has on its participants. The effects are very positive and help to prepare young peo-
ple for adulthood. The study found that the experience of the program enhances concern about other group members personal problems and wellbeing. The program creates value for the community which in turn encourages servants to be even more active in their community. Working within the program enhances the servant’s conceptual skills thereby increasing complex problem-solving skills. It can be empowering in that it allows a leader to entrust followers with responsibility and decision making. In the working relationships of the program, the leader learns to allow servants to attain their full potential and enjoy success. The Servant Leader Program has two additional effects that may be the most important: the leaders putting subordinates first by prioritizing and meeting the needs of the servants before addressing their own needs and learning to aspire to ethical behavior which includes being honest, trustworthy and serving as a model of integrity.
