Stockton Heritage Museum opens 2020 season By John Day
CORRESPONDENT
The Stockton Heritage Museum has lined up a full schedule of public events for their 2020 season. Ann Coppernoll, Board President said, “Some events have been listed although dates are yet to be determined. We’re sure that they will be confirmed. A few of these events require an admission fee. We think that our patrons and the public will enjoy this season’s events.” On Mar. 21 and 28, the Beginning Genealogy program will be offered from 1:30 p.m. And, on April 4, at 1 p.m. Mark Peterson will present Cahokia and the Mississippian Culture. Those interested must register through the Highland College Lifelong Learning program. May 3, 2 p.m. brings Postcards:
The Happy Invention with Kathleen Hamilton Smith. May 31, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Art in the Afternoon, a display and celebration of works by local artists. This event is a fundraiser for the Heritage Museum. A $20 ticket will include wine, finger food and music. June 7, 2 p.m. Jeanne Schultz Angel, a Roads Scholar gives her program about Women Suffragettes. Then on June 20, attend a History of the Plum River Masonic Lodge and tour of the 1912 building. July 12, 2 p.m. The Farmer is the Man, Songs of the Farm, presented by Chris Vallillo. In August a program featuring members of the 60’s band the Nomads will be scheduled. Sept. 20, 2 p.m. Chris Knauer, a local radio personality will discuss his career. An October date will be
scheduled for a Warren Dixon program about gas stations, auto agencies and more. Soon to be finding its place in history is the Stockton Airport. The airport, which was founded by Burrill Coppernoll and his late brother John, nearly seventy years ago, is in the process of becoming voluntarily decertified. The owner, Burrill Coppernoll has sent a request to the State of Illinois expressing his desire to shut down the airport. Burrill Coppernoll, who will turn 99 this month said, “Well, I sent the paperwork to Springfield last week. I think the time has come. I’m afraid I’ve gotten old and no one is using the airport anymore. Coppernoll, who spent the better part of his life as a licensed pilot with a career in aeronautics, is a 2011 recipient of the Wright Brothers Award,
recognizing his contributions to aircraft education and safety. The award also recognized that Coppernoll had held his pilot’s license longer than any other flier in Illinois. Coppernoll made his first solo flight on Mar 3, 1940. Since then, he has worked for the Illinois Department of Aviation, been an advocate for education in the field of aeronautics and operated the Stockton Airport. Coppernoll said, “My brother and I used to go to Machesney Airport, near Rockford, to learn to fly. The airport was owned by Fred Machesney. Machesney had been a barn storming flyer before building the airport. He also sold FlyAll brand airplanes. We bought our first airplane there. “John and I flew one to Florida as part of an air show sponsored by Gulf Oil. Every two or three hundred
miles we would land at an airfield and our plane would be fueled and serviced for free by Gulf Oil.” Coppernoll thinks it unlikely that anyone will take over the operation of the Stockton Airport. Coppernoll said, “At one time there were 19 planes lined up along the runway, or in a hangar. I sold my plane a while ago and there are no other aircraft there now. Once it’s decommissioned, the property will be returned to farming. I’ve spent my life doing what I loved. It is time to move on.” Although the Stockton Airport may be closing, it will live on in memory because of Burrill Coppernoll. The Stockton Heritage Museum is located at 131 Front St. They can be contacted by phone, 815-947-2220 or Facebook.
